I haven't yet played FFX-2 and I've seen nearly nothing from it besides the appalling Floral Fallal costumes. Apparently, I did the right thing.

Huh, an Atelier Iris LP... *pops in the game after reading an update*.

This game is a mess! But holy crap these shopkeepers are awesome!

The best one is "Oscar, the Fugitive Chef!" Escaped from the confines of the kitchen, he travels around turning things into food, sometimes even erstwhile travelers! This is my favorite kind of goofy. :)

Veola still best shopkeeper.

Game's not really so much of a mess as much as mildly engaging fluff at best. Klein and Delsus are nice, Pamela is good for a laugh occasionally, but Veola steals the show. Says something when the shopkeeper NPC is the best character.

There's a reason fans speculate that the game originally WAS Atelier Veola and some drama CDs from Gust definitely wink at the fans on that very fact.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy: It is unfortunately impossible for me to see a "Professor Sycamore" without flashing back to Pokemon XY, with a side of Kill-la-kill since the Aikuro/Sycamore mashup fanart was hilarious.

Not much to say otherwise, gameplay is standard Layton fare.

I'm not even being ironic when I say that Psychic Paine is great. She totally has that final boss look. In battle she's floating in air in that effortlessly cool way.

It's a legitimately solid costume, even before you compare it to the rest of them.

It is a legitimately solid costume because it is straight up a Shin Megami Tensei protaganist outfit (even has the immaculate shoes).  I have nothing bad to say about it.  I think Yuna's looks more like a final boss though without having seen them in motion.

I do think you are overlooking some other solid choices (Paine does tend to have the better outfits!  Other than Festivalist because Yuna gets generic Kimono look)

Like out of the original outfits I think Trainer is probably some of the best.

Like yeah it isn't something I would rate normally, but Spiran fashion trends towards bright orange belly shirt and purple chaps.  Trainer Paine is like some kind of fusion of that Spiran trend towards patchworks of natural materials and a ball gown with full length gloves that are functional because she is using them for Falconry.

And her White Mage is kind of phenomenal.  The other two white mage outfits are boring as fuck.  Paine though gets something that is like what I would hope the WM outfit would be for a Final Fantasy game set in the 70s club scene.

Tights, some fucking sick Go Go Boots and that weird jacket/dress/robe hybrid thing goes together pretty great.

Even to the other girl's credit, the WM outfits presented here are probably the best uses of colour the series has had.  Even Holly Whyte's better outfit is a minimal use of colour and is just a great use of lines to draw attention.

Day 1

Nice post. TBH yeah those are cool. I haven't unlocked Trainer and couldn't really notice the details on White Mage in game.

As far as Paine's outfits go I specifically don't like:
- Warrior (= Default Paine, Nomura Paine)
- Thief (Yeah...)
- Black Mage (Overdone)
- Gunmage (Way overdone)
- Gunner (Looks reasonable compared to others but shows too much skin and has too many colors)
- Full Throttle (It looks like you're supposed to use this exoskeleton mainly for sex but I don't know how)
- Edit: I'm adding songstress there. Camel toe.

I don't have any other dresspheres but these, Festivalist, White Mage and Psychic.
And Festivalist is inoffensive but boring.

Psychic Paine looks like this in game:
http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140103170804/finalfantasy/images/archive/c/cd/20140408195057!FFX-2_Victory_Paine_Psychic.png

By the way Psychic Paine looks almost as OP as Festivalist Paine. Good stats, elemental immunity, time stop, Haste + other buffs in one spell, MT damage...... And I still haven't unlocked everything.

I probably would have given her Gendo Glasses.

Not going to lie, none of these are the outfits I am really looking forward to seeing and using the most though.

The one I am looking forward to is Sexy Space Marines in bright orange underpants.

Etrian Odyssey IV - Beat Fallen One & Warped Savior (poisoned)

Party was essentially offensively useless against the Great Dragon and carried by the guest member. The following shifts in level cap meant that this was no longer the case for the Storm Emperor and far from the case for the Blizzard King.

Ended up beating Fallen One on levels 92 and Warped Savior on levels 93. Luck probably played a major part in each victory.

I see no reason to attempt fighting the non-poisoned Warped Savior.

Item completion is only missing the special drops from the three Gourds and the Moth Lord, and distressingly the regular drop from the Fallen One, but I see no real reason to finish that off.

I have gained an appreciation for Squall Volley + Follow Trace and Runes in general + (Auto) Blood Surge. Imperial meanwhile seems to be far and away the least useful of the subclasses I used.

Veola still best shopkeeper.

Game's not really so much of a mess as much as mildly engaging fluff at best.

I'm assuming that when he called the game a mess, he probably means the disaster that was sidequesting/shop upgrades. The game doesn't tell you, but the game will only let you take one "Sidequest" at a time, and is kind of random for what this means. So if you try to do a bunch of stuff without completing whatever random sidequest you last took, stuff will not occur! This is in fact a large mess for a game that about unlocking items and seeing more Veola scenes. It's horrendous to get everything until/unless you realize this limitation.

Child of Light:  Beaten.  Final levels were 42ish?  I played on Hard mode or whatever it's called.

Overall the game was well-polished but seriously short.  They shoot their load too early with the flying so there's not really anything novel left to do platforming-wise.  Oh, you have to navigate through sharp thorns!  Oh, you have to navigate through sharp thorns with a bigger hitbox!

Enemies were competent and had lots of counterattacks, probably too many really (not sure how it is on normal mode).  A lot of times you were pigeonholed into using a specific character (usually the Capilli) on enemies.  Game was still easy overall, especially with no penalty for dying and free heals on levelup.  Hardest fight was Nox, too damn fast and had a water attack that did 75% to Big Guy even when defending.

Most of the characters were useful in some respect.  Rankings!

Capilli - as only source of elemental damage outside Aurora, was needed way too much for randoms and bosses.
Bolmus - Pretty much any time I had problems with a boss the answer was always this guy.
Aurora - Light damage woot.
Big Guy - Taunt.
Comedy - Useful earlygame for speedy interrupts.  Bad lategame, weak damage and weak healing.
Temp - Decent but doesn't really stand out
Fish - Joins too late but I did use on last boss.  Paralyze hax.
Tragedy - Worthless

Did you not properly abuse elemental stones, el capitan? Capili's generally still best for elemental nukes, but at least other people can still contribute that way.

I found the final boss to be much meaner than Nox, but that's perhaps because they're fought in sequence and my party's resources were trashed after Nox. To be fair, they're both total status bait once their support is dead. Paralyze is too damn good.

Re: Atelier Iris, yeah there's one item which is required for one of Veola's last quests that as far as I'm aware is a one-of-a-kind find. It's possible to sub this in for a lesser component in an earlier invention if you don't know any better. Not that this was a thing which happened in my game and denied me a proper end to her storyline (NOT BITTER AT ALL). Yeah, she's totally the best part of the game.

Tristis is kinda interesting lategame (his skyrocketing defenses -do- matter at that point, and his damage reduction buffs can also help there as well), but he takes a long time even -getting- there and his offense is disheartening (Rubella-level damage gets you absolutely nowhere). Óengus' tanking game is honestly more relevant due to providing proactive tanking (and that's HUGE considering the system). His MDef can be an issue, but the HP usually compensates, and you can slap a magic resistance gem on him anyway to mitigate that. Honestly, lategame, Óengus and Finn felt like the best PCs due to overall best offense (Robert even comes close to Óengus' strength with just a little bit of damage buffing, but Óengus mults and easier access to higher-level attacks are hard to surpass, and Finn's magic off the passives just soars ahead of the rest of the cast even -before- weakness-hitting. I was scoring 700 damage on L3 thunder spells after Rage of the Capilli hit L3 against neutral enemies by the end).

Child of Light- fin.  Cute game with no shortage of valid ideas that never quite come together into a full game.  Some of it is just that there's not enough content relative to the tools you have, some of it is being clearly rushed and a bit disjointed (and the rhyming gimmick not being done all that well), and some is some strange decisions in the core mechanics.  It's definitely worth playing, a short game that still has a full gameplay arc, just it's not as good as it was trying to be.  7/10.

FF10 HD: Middle of Thunder Plains.  Was going to play more before analysis but...long overdue, so here we go!

First notable thing about Tidus is the Shoopuff stuff.  First off, he awes at a city underwater, because hey, that's neat and unexpected!  Wakka quizes him on the "Why" and Tidus gives a simple logical answer of "Well, it's really convenient with all that water" and Wakka basically goes "NO! YOU'RE WRONG! THEY WANTED TO PROVE SOMETHING!"  Now, here's something I didn't remember; Tidus didn't just take it and move on, he actually went "I'm not so sure..."; he's basically avoiding an argument, but at the same time, expressing he disagrees.  This exchange, small as it is, shows two things about Tidus' character:

A. He's got half a brain.  Tidus isn't what I'd call a "smart guy" but he's also not an idiot.  "Average Intelligence" sums up Tidus pretty well, so while not winning any awards on intelligence, he's not going to trip over his own feet and can put things together.  It's rare we see this since so many games either aim for displaying the characters as bright, or just downright morons; Tidus actually is believably middle ground.

B. Tidus isn't simply just eating all the crap he's being spoonfed.  Wakka, very confidently, tells Tidus that he is wrong, and Wakka as we know is brainwashed by Yevon like the rest of Spira, Al Bhed not withstanding.  Nonetheless, Wakka shows every bit of confidence in his argument, while Tidus is more just proposing ignorant speculation because he doesn't actually know, just "Well, I think this."  Thing is, rather than going "oh, I see, guess I was wrong", Tidus' "I'm not so sure" response indicates that while he doesn't know the truth, he isn't convinced that Wakka, as confident as his claim is, is right.

After this, Tidus is pretty quick to point out "if Machina is evil, why do you guys use it for things like Blitzball?" which is fair, but thankfully Lulu responds this time with a logical "it depends on the Machina, Yevon tells us."  This is less a Tidus thing and more the game covering its own setting with hypocrisy, using Tidus as a logical point to question it, which is exactly why Tidus I think works as a character, as on top of being a character, he's also a proxy for the player; he knows as little about Spira as the player does, thus asks the questions he asks.

Fight with Rikku, then, another quick exchange happens, with Wakka being all "AL BHED ARE THE DEVIL!" rants because racist.  Tidus, much to my surprise, said something I don't remember him saying, but nonetheless, great line to use for people who claim Tidus does nothing but whine; he tells Wakka to stop the useless complaining and just focus on protecting Yuna.  Yes, Tidus, the alleged whiner, just told Wakka to stop his whining and focus on the task at hand.

Nothing much happens outside of Guadosalam, where it's mostly Tidus speaking his mind.  This is Tidus being naive as he's still not use to the fact that Maester = Super Important Role.  He doesn't like Seymour, so he says disrespectful things in his own house (much to Yuna's dismay.)  After that, we get the Farplane.

Tidus whines about Jecht again, the one thing he actually does whine about in the game, and to this point, the game tries to establish that Tidus' complaints are justified because Jecht was a total douche.  Yuna questions why Tidus hates him so much and Tidus first responds "Everything he does pisses me off!" but then in a surprise, comes to an even more concrete conclusion, that being Tidus loved his mother a lot, but everytime Jecht was home, she'd completely ignore him in favor of his father.  IOWs, he has a legitimate Oedipus Complex, wanting to spend time with his mother but competing with his father.  In discovering this, he comes to a realization about Jecht as well, that Jecht wasn't entirely a bad person, as he remembers his father sometimes going "Oh, spend time with him, he'll just cry about it if you don't."

This scene is important for two reasons, one being Tidus and the other being Jecht.  The Tidus reason is that Tidus finally starts to recognize why his father is an outlet of his anger, and it's the first time he ever looks at his father in something more than just pure negativity.  It's not necessarily positive, but it's the first time Tidus started having shades of grey, which in itself shows Tidus is just now starting to doubt his own beliefs.  The other side is Jecht; until this point, all the Jecht scenes we've seen were purely from Tidus' perspective so "This guy is a total dick!"  Yet somehow, Yuna is capable of finding him "kind and gentle" and it's implied Auron respects Jecht as a friend, so there's obviously a disconnect.  This is the first instance we see that maybe there's more to Jecht than meets the eye, which we will later discover Jecht wasn't so much a dick as much as just bad at expressing himself towards his son.  In this scene, we see Jecht actually telling his wife to spend time with their son instead of himself, a very fatherly thing to do, but with the "he'll cry about it if you don't" demonstrates that he's just bad at giving a good reason.  Obviously what Jecht meant was "he needs you more than me, spend time with him" but said it in a poor, demeaning way.  Basically, heart was in the right place, but his ego got in the way.  This is the first hint towards the fact that Jecht is a legitimately good guy, just is too full of himself at times to express it properly.

The rest of the sequence is mostly Tidus probing Lulu for info about Yuna, and him thinking marrying Seymour is silly.  It doesn't really show much of Tidus' character other than I guess being an early precursor that "yes, the two have a budding relationship."  I mean, why would Tidus care so much about Yuna getting married if it's just for PR?  I guess you could argue "because Tidus wants his friends to be happy" but yeah, this sequence is mostly Tidus being a proxy of the player again; marriage is not a simple thing to commit too, most players are probably thinking "DON'T DO IT! YOU BARELY KNOW THE GUY!"

Not much in Thunder Plains, outside of Tidus probing Auron for "So...that's all you have to say?" and Auron's response of "The pilgrimage will still go on, I have no objections."  Fair, Auron just wants to get Yuna to Zanarkand (the reason of course is not obvious on a first playthrough, but that's not important here), so makes sense he doesn't care what Yuna's decision is if the pilgrimage keeps going.  Tidus' reaction is less whiny, and more "seriously, you're really going to go through with it? Just like that? IT'S MARRIAGE!"

...yeah, I had a lot to say for such a small part of the game apparently, guess it's a good thing I talked about this now!

I'll admit, my take on that was always less "But does she love him," and more "But what sort of advantage does this get either of them?"  I mean, Summoners and Maesters are big deals, and it's not uncommon for people who are big deals to treat marriage as a sort of business deal, no love involved.

Eventually figuring out the motivations of both parties as they gel in the Bevelle sequence is always fun.  Mostly because Seymore's motivations are just so delightfully twisted.

DQ6 - I have no time at night any more and am only getting to play while I fall asleep. fFX-2 trying to get 100% requires too much faqbait to keep going for a bit.  So this.  I am trying to do txt as mindlessly as possible.  Right down to arena abuse as soon as I find one.  So I am trying to secure bankroll for that.

Holy shit is the casino in this fucking dumb.  You don't need to include a short cut key to quit playing, then ask me if I want to keep playing after each spin and if I say yes I really don't need you to tell me instructions after I have already played multiple times.

Would like to be playing more Child of Light, but oh well! Not going to complain about being on holiday.

Random games played recently:

Mario Kart 8, Brawl, various Mario and Mega Man games - Not much to say about these, good times were had.
Ducktales Remastered - Never played the NES game, but this seems pretty fun. May pick it up at some point.

Slowly working through Eviltype while on vacation, of course, so the rest of the post is about that.

After Zozo I did another Veldt run, which I don't normally do, because I was a bit worried about my team's power level and figured a slight push on spells might be appreciated (not that I actually got many). Most notable thing gained during this sequence was the Anguiform Rage, which uses a MT water attack 100% of the time (though which one varies) and is hence amazing.

Opera House - Edgar/Gau team. 1 reset. Took too much time because the rats steadfastly refused to get out of my way ever. Every single one. Second attempt they cooperated a bit better and things went more smoothly. I steal a couple Rising Suns here which are nice.

Ultros 2 decides to be bad, never using a damage-dealing move outside his not-too-threatening physical. Rising Suns (which randocast Fire 2), Templar Rage, and Edgar shenanigans make him take not too long, although he still does two fullheals.

Magitek Factory is a smooth afair because Anguiform largely wrecks it, especially with Noiseblaster to help.

Shiva/Ifrit - Aren't too bad, although they can output a fair bit of damage, since whatever I have four PCs and lots of revival and they have some crappy turns. I use a fair bit of Runic but it doesn't stop everything, and the Lobo rage since it's safe and boring.

Number 024 - Is a defensive boss who relies on turtling against elements and helaing himself periodically. For some reason Sage also removed his Seizure vulnerability. This was a poor choice, as seizure kicking in means his defensive game sucks and he becomes a joke. If there's one change I would make to Eviltype, it is fixing that hole. It's not as if Edgar is in danger of being too weak...

Minecart sequence - 1 reset. The red Mag Roaders hit really hard and although I'm able to tank through them with an ice-nulling rage, sadly they prove to be the formation right before the boss who I die to immediately after. Whoops. Second try I just make sure to keep them very, very confused. I don't have too much to say about Number 128, except that Locke spends much of the fight dead (yay Genji Glove), and that seizure and slow are really useful. Approaching the fight defensively works well, which feels like it shouldn't work but so it goes.

Cranes - In theory the hardest Vector fight but naaah. Their MP is pretty low so they can be quickly Rapsed away from the danger zone. Rasp so good in Eviltype. Float helps for Magnitude8, Protect makes the physicals less terrifying, and Anguiform cuts through them pretty badly.

Okay that went well. At this point I forget that Golem and ZoneSeek exist, which proves a bad idea eventually. I do remember to get Mog and pick up a few dances. Mog's higher level (18 to the ~13 of everyone else) is a big deal.

Sealed Cave - 1 reset in the early areas, Liches and their stupid fire magic prove a bit much. Anyway I run this with a Terra/Mog/Gau/Edgar, Noiseblast what you can and abuse water weakness (Water Rondo, Anguiform) or fire weakness (Dusk Requiem, Bomb) on everything else. Terra should probably get Fire 2 around this point but due to levels mine sadly doesn't, but oh well.

At the banquet I just miss the Charm Bangle. I'll live.

Burning House - 3? resets on the randoms here. This proves the first main problem area in a while, probably since Ultros 1. Enemies have fine damage and my three-PC team will wipe fast if I'm not careful, especially against six-balloon formations. I start equipping a Back Guard for randoms here because ambushes can easily be fatal. Beyond that, a Shiva summon from Terra and an Aqua Rake send the enemies packing, sufficiently boosted, so I mostly just use that and hope the initiative doesn't hate me (Locke can heal mid-attack if he goes before the enemies and Terra or Strago doesn't).

FlameEater - 2 resets. FlameEater has limited MP like the cranes, which is great. Unfortunately I don't have Rasp on anyone here... Terra is close but even getting her Ice 2 involves fighting some superfluous random formations in the forest area of Thamasa Island, which I normally might skip. Fortunately he uses enough costly spells that I can run him out, but this is kind of tricky. I buff my entire team with Safe and Shell (and have one shot of Kirin for MT regen) and try to keep the balloons under control. The best bet is to confuse them with ST muddle and not kill them, as they will blow up periodically on each other or the boss. (One of them blowing up on me is bad, and lots of enemies attacking at once is bad.) I don't want him to resummon too often because I don't want to see a Grenade, but on the winning run I fortunately do not. Anyway he runs himself out of MP quickly enough especially once he starts using reflected Fire 3 (haha, unreflected it would OHKO through Shell, but reflected I can deal with). After that his offence drops some and more importantly I no longer have to fear his Fire 2 counters which could, coupled with his own turns, wipe me out. Ice 2 does him in after enough tries. I use a very defensive setup otherwise since nobody else's offence really matters.

Ultros 3 - 2 resets here. Ultros hits hard. His skillset includes MT Tentacle, 75% ST gravity, Stone (confuse, 2HKO magic), and decently hard-hitting ST physicals. A small amount of this OHKOs before Protect, but it pretty much all 2HKOs after. Not too bad except he sometimes doubleacts (although MT Tentacle x2 doesn't seem possible) so even with all my buffs he can kill people, and reviving with three people AND rebuffing ain't easy. Terra still doesn't have Fire 2 and front row is right out as an option so my only really good damage is Locke. Ultros is inexplicably floating so dual Hawk Eyes hurt real bad, which is good because the longer the fight goes, the more chance something can go wrong. He also has Dischord (lowers level/offence) and L2 Daze which can muddle/stop people of the appropriate level, and Dischord means who is what level changes. Pretty painful, and if he ever got all three people to an even level at once and used it I'd pretty much just wipe (hence the need for a reasonably fast win). I would have won this first try (I got Relm to show up) but he decided to OHKO Relm and then wipe my party as I tried to revive her. Second try I die faster, third I win. Good, tough fight.

I managed to save all my randoms here for after I got Relm (4 PCs learning spells instead of 3 is good) so I'll have notes on the dungeon itself later.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
Maybe.

Elf: Can you make a save for me once you beat Darril's tomb? I want to take another hack or two at the WoR. Thanks.
