My mom got her appendix removed yesterday. It's times like this that it breaks my heart to live in a different place. Sent her some books to read while she's on sick leave, at least, but I wish I could be more helpful. :(

Eesh.

That's not cool. I hope things get better for her !

I've been talking about it a lot on IRC and FaceBook, but I've recently graduated from university. I successfully defended my undergraduate thesis and I will be expecting my diploma sometime within the month, because I deserve not to attend the graduation march after all the bullshit my university put me through. I deserve at least that much as my revenge. I'll be moving back to Hong Kong sometime mid of July, where I will attempt to start a new life. I guess.

I am at E3. E3 is very busy. It also has a ton of really awesome artwork, A/V set-ups, lighting and booth design, and other signs of ridiculous success built on the backs of the millions who pay $60+ to play their games.

It's kind of weird.

I am playing Schmooze.

But I played SSB4, Disney Fantasia, and walked by everything else in between sales meetings. Tomorrow I'm gonna check out Destiny for sure, spend some time playing P4 Arena Ultimax, check out the Squenix booth to see what they've got playable, and actually enjoy some of the show since I only have 2 meetings instead of 12.

You dumbass, the verb is do, not play. Who fucking says "I play marketing"? Nobody. Dipshit.

Actually wait most of our students would say that because #EnglishEducationInJapan. Yaaaaaay

Speaking of, I think I may have made a mistake signing up for year 4. Part of it is that I am just starting to get sick of all the little things about the country. The passive aggression, the unnecessary babying when it comes to simple tasks that, yes were helpful 3 years ago, now are just a sign that no matter how long you are here for the chances of being taken seriously are slim and none.  A bigger part is that all the projects I was building up, the curriculum I was implementing at my elementary schools and what not, were completely overtaken at two of my schools this year because the Board of Education wanted to implement their own English program (it's fucking godawful, oh my god... seriously, they spend 3 classes, 3 weeks, teaching nine year old kids to count to ten in English. Holy fucking shit let's just bore the kids to death for fucks sakes), and it is really starting to piss me off that nothing that I do in this town will actually have any permanence. I need to find a job where I'm not just building up walls to see them torn down the next day like a fucking soviet peasant. Fffffffffffffffff.

My job is changing in July, at least, and I'm moving over to a different Board of Education that is implementing a different curriculum, one that is not only less godawful and boring, but that I will have a hand in designing the lessons for for next year. I'm hoping that the change of pace solves my problems, but if not I'll have my loans paid off and I can take the risk of moving somewhere else (perhaps in Tokyo?) and finding a job there. For now though, things here are starting to be too frustrating to be worth it.

Actually, I'm teaching at Preschool, so most of my students hardly speak Japanese, so they haven't learned any terrible English habits yet, and they are picking up proper pronunciation and sentence structure with a speed that can only be attributed to a human child's innate capacity for inheriting language because there's no way I'm that good of a teacher.

Not having to unlearn things helps a lot. Adults can learn too, and have the context to learn faster if they choose to use it (most don't), but kids don't have to get over all the rules and experience with language that comes with age. Lucky little bastards.

Zenny: I hope things turn around for you. If you actually are able to help shape the program, that should help. Nothing like living in a crazy place by someone else's crazy rules without any chance to change anything.

--

Speaking of... in a far less extreme way but frustrating in its own right has been my job with my current company (that is also Laggy's current company and is formerly Andrew's company). They gave me a raise and a promotion and promised the company would change, but there just isn't room there for me to do what I want to do, which is shaping strategy and brand and actually doing things that are different instead of just repeatedly going "hey guys, that's dumb, do it this way" only to be ignored and come back to it three months later where everyone says "hey guys, that was dumb, we should have done it this way, let's do that now" when it's too late.

So I did what any normal person tired of their job but seeing an acceleration in their career overall would do: I took a new job.

I start with Sega (mobile) in July. It's another raise, a new title, lots of nifty perks, but most importantly it's taking my career in the direction I want it to go, i.e., not continuing to work with data everyone else ignores. Plus it's in San Francisco proper so I don't have to live in godawful South Bay anymore, yay!

Thanks! I didn't mean to hijack, I just haven't been able to talk about this with anyone. :I

Also it is the reason I can't go to DLC this year. I start July 7.

I have no idea why, but the teachers are alternately dressing up as Afro wearing aliens and wandering around scaring children today. So of course I asked if I could do it too.

My only regret is that I couldn't get a picture.

Stranger danger drills? For some reason to teach the kids how to act when an unauthorized (and potentially dangerous) person is on campus they dress a teacher up in an afro and sunglasses and march everyone into the gym.

There's a whole lot of disgusting subtext to it actually that makes it seem a lot less cute than it did at first. And that sentence basically sums up Japan right there.

It was a lot more sedate than that. They definitely weren't doing stranger danger, the effect was more like goofy monsters. I suspect it has something to do with chasing out oni or some obscure  Tanabata thing.
