Title: Good Morning, 2014! #firstworldproblems edition
Post by: Lady Door on January 03, 2014, 07:48:13 PM
It's day 3 and no one has had anything to complain about yet? Shenanigans!

Work has experienced another round of layoffs. All the DLers' jobs were not directly affected, but it's still an uncomfortable sign of the instability this company is facing.

I'm still waiting to hear from my manager about the EU opportunity, but the EU has actual benefits like vacation time so they won't even be back until Monday. I'm also on tap for a job at Amazon and a job at Nintendo, but the holidays have put that on hold for the most part, too. I'm not sure how I'd rate my chances on any of these, but I'm starting to give up on my current job (which, if you'll recall, was only supposed to be some place I'd stay for ~1 year). Hoping something works out and I continue my trend of making 30-50% more when I do move on.

Christmas and New Year's were boring. My family canceled on me because my dad's job is in jeopardy and he's a workaholic that obviously needed to get a second job doing the thing he was doing before he took his first job. Obviously.

I am doing crafty/arty things. I'm not sure whether to sign up for another art class, mostly because the aforementioned job opportunities would all require moving away from the Bay Area.

Basically nothing has changed in the past 5 years. Next verse, same as the first.

EDIT: super would like to point out that I got fat. That has changed. Thanks, super, for pointing out my oversight.

Sitting in phone queue trying to get store credit for my presents that didn't ship.  I see the website has a section under Family Board Games: Magnetic Poetry Kits.

I am now trying to imagine Magnetic Poetry.

Our affair is Manic depressive
Our Bi-Poles so attractive
The sex is great of course
we come together by force

Edit - Today I learned that there is Clue: D&D, Scrabble: Hobbit Edition and Monopoly: Sonic the Hedgehog Collectors edition.

Edit 2 - Also going to get repayment for Christmas presents that didn't ship.  Huzzah.

Have you never seen it? Andrew and I have the Shakespeare version on our refrigerator. Good words in that one.

Also, Hasbro's line of games has reached the point of no profits except licensing. There's a My Little Pony version of Monopoly with minifigs.

The world, what has it come to.

(yay for repayment)

They had some at the house at second DLCon in San Fransisco too, seen them before but I wouldn't call them poetry kits or expect them in games shops with their own section.  On your fridge I just of the opinions that "of course these two have a fridge covered in words".  That is like Ciatos and Elves having Megaman figurines, Sopko having a signed VHS of Leiji Matsumoto and me having a nerf gun with one round loaded on a shelf right next to my door (it is less public than rolling a D6 over and over in chat).

Has anybody heard from Dunie?~

Couldn't sleep right most of last week, didn't really sleep last night. Overcast/really cloudly/thick clouds and belting down rain. Really wanted to go back/stay in bed but was in most of last week and probably shouldn't miss the group I do Wednesdays this time, since before you know it two might lead to three off, etc sort of thing. Hope I get through this ok. No coffee to wire me/wake me up properly sort of either. At least I am mostly recovered from the sick of last week, hopefully sleep thing will settle down soon~

Post by: Lady Door on January 17, 2014, 07:36:49 PM
Haven't heard or seen Dunie, but that's not unusual for me.

Had my annual review last night. Very positive! Got "Exceeds Expectations" (lol grade school), which is top 5% rating. Apparently that means I get a 5% raise.

I'm having fun releasing a game that I actually think is exciting. I've been plastering it all over my Facebook because obviously that is what you do on Facebook. If you have an iPhone and you want me to succeed and get bonuses at work, you can download it: X-Men: Battle of the Atom. Absolutely fucking panned by IGN, but well received by Comic Book Resources, so, you know. It's a card battle game, which is a tough and stupid genre to begin with. The game does have actual (and new) art by X-Men artists, and a storyline supervised and partially written by an X-Men writer.

Despite work being okay, I'm still out on the job market. Still waiting on Nintendo. Am now registered with a creative services recruiting firm with contacts in tech and entertainment places in the Bay Area. Interviewing with very positive feedback with Education.com. It's nice to feel wanted.

Ohh ohh ohh is your raise based on a curve as well?   Significantly Exceeds, gate 6% raise instead of 9% because pay is a certain % above the average for role.  It is like your staff getting SE for 3 years running is telling your business something.  Better ignore it, it might be expensive to follow that thought.

Edit and I am confident that CBR will get you bigger push in your target audience than IGN was ever going to.
Title: Re: Good Morning, 2014! #firstworldproblems edition
Post by: Lady Door on January 18, 2014, 12:05:23 AM
If my raise isn't based on a curve, my rating is. It translates to "you are probably not fucked in the next round of layoffs."

The IGN thing is most annoying because we promised them exclusive first coverage, which they squandered by posting 24 hours late, and then making that "exclusive" coverage a 4/10 rating.

Jerks.

Its pretty great having both rating and raise on a curve.  Get same raise as someone else getting EE.  Make it so they had to work harder to get EE. :):):):):)

Gref: thanks for the laugh man, I needed that.

Yeah, friend from another gaming site, guy I played Pathfinder with for a year+ , game just wrapped up, we were gonna have a get together next weekend about what we should do for the next game...and then this. I just...don't even have words. I don't know what to think, what to feel, what I could have done, what was even there for me to do. Dude left his roommate/best bro to clean up his shit, left messages for everyone along the lines of "thanks for putting up with me for so long" and I just...

don't

fucking

know

k;jhasfkjhSDF;HDSFAASDF;KL

I'm gonna try and be there for those left behind who were closer to him then me. It's all I can do, all I can think to do. I can't tell whether I'm so depressed about this that it's pissing me off, or if I'm so pissed off about this it's depressing me.

It never makes sense (even when it was the most logical thing in the world).  There is no secret to handling it and I am sure you are well aware that both of these responder natural ones.  Keep on keeping on and you will return to a rest state.

Be there for those that knew him if you can, have others be there for you if you need it.

To break the standard script a bit, the best way I have ever found to face death is to go be alive.

Edit - Gods I sound like a twat.

Edit - Gods I sound like a twat.

This is nothing new or unusual.

But yeah, just...living is pretty much what I do. Exist from day to day, inertia on down the line. Curiosity is my driving character trait, it ensures that I at least will never exit the game early of my own volition. Wish I could share that persistent nagging desire to know what's next with the people who need it, but...well, not really something that can be done.

Ash: I'll prolly take you up on that next week or the week after. Assuming the wednesday gaming is a thing that still happens, that is.

Gate: Let me know when you want to head up. Most weekends, we leave around 11am, and get home around 2am. We can adjust as necessary!

--

Had a good interview with Education.com. They pretty much want to do the rest of the interviews (with the high-level exec that likes to oversee all hires) as perfunctory  meetings. Still no conversation about compensation which is just as well becaaaaaause...

My coworker just put in her 2 weeks' notice.

She's the only other one that works in my specialty, which means I am now the sole person responsible for those duties in the department. There is literally no one left who can do what we do. We have yet to back-fill any vacated positions, so it's not likely we'll hire another person to fill the role.

Time to renegotiate that 5% raise, eh?

Zenny: Thanks, man.

I'm...slowly coming around to some sense of equilibrium about things again. Little shit like going on the Pathfinder SRD(he was the GM for the PF game I was in) still risks sending me into a crying fit, but I'm able to pull myself out of it and function enough. This will probably smooth out into Ye Olde Standarde depression episode, but I know how to weather those by now.

Ash: Yeah, def. looks like time to push for a bigger raise. And...not this weekend, but maybe the 1st(that's a Saturday, right?). And 11-2 is fine.

Sometimes keeping routines helps you get through the day. I'm glad you're still doing Pathfinder, even though it's hard, and I hope the depression you're expecting passes quickly. If there's more we can do than just bringing you along for games, please don't hesitate to ask. I think you still have my phone number, but I'll send it over again just in case.

Also, Feb 1st is a day we'll have to go early. I have to get my hairs did up there; I think we tend to leave around 9am, meaning we can swing by your place around 9:30 or so. It may be 10 or 10:30, I dunno, my calendar isn't accessible at the moment.

EDIT: Past me is apparently smarter than present me: it's on my personal calendar for 11. So yes, we'll be by around 10, 10:30ish on Saturday if you're still up for it.

Went to w00tstock. The savvy stalkers in the audience will remember that I went to w00tstock in lieu of ComicCon (fucking ticket drama! maybe I can get those from my employer this year...). It was glorious, especially because it opened with Neil Gaiman coming onto stage to say "George R R Martin is not your bitch" in response to Paul & Storm's "Write Like the Wind", and George R R Martin smashed their guitar. Also, Wil Wheaton tells hilarious stories with an aww factor. The greatest of these was Spicy Dick Milk.

Anyway, when Patrick Rothfuss Facebook'd that he'd be in SF on Monday, and oh by the way he was co-MC of w00tstock, I immediately went and bought tickets.

That was so worth it. My only regret is that I did not realize it was part of Sketchfest, which means I missed the chance to see Tenacious D perform, and also to see the Farewell Futurama event.

I'm still debating whether to go see Rothfuss in the city tomorrow evening. I'd like to, but living in South Bay makes that a $10, walk in a shady neighborhood alone at night kind of affair. I should decide tonight. I do enjoy seeing him in person, and he's a really funny guy, and I don't have his latest "for kids" book...

Just found out that the funeral is on Saturday the 1st. So, uh, another week I suppose.

I'm hoping after then...I can get back to some semblance of normalcy and stop being so mindsearingly ANGRY all the time. Was kinda funny seeing the rest of the gaming group yesterday, and how differently we're all dealing with it. One can't figure out if he's still in denial or shot straight through to acceptance, one is still breaking down crying at the drop of a hat, another is outwardly fine but waaaaaaay more quiet then usual. And then there's me having to stop myself from punching walls and breaking out into loud swearing streaks.

Same.

So my grandparents. Grandmother finally got a date for the first of her knee ops (10th Feb), since she had a heart condition as well, and various other issues she had to go through a lot of tests and retests. Papa ... he's really not doing good at all. The hospital took him off the anti depressants he'd been on years and years, the really strong ones from the past where you had to watch out for cheese and things. Upshot is no, he's not taking as many night terrors as before, downside is demons are there more during the day. He seems really depressed. All the major signs, not eating, too much sleeping, not moving, not washing. Taking major motivation from my nana/family to do anything really. Nana is stressing out/worried about this. Papa is to go for three weeks respite care when nana is in the hospital. Guess he is worried about that too. I hope they feel better soon :(

Congratulations on the job Rob~

Went to audiology on Friday. Had hearing test done which I haven't had done for a couple of years. I get them done every so often. Still more or less completely deaf in right ear (90%+~) but main thing is my hearing has also went down in my left ear again. Concerning since there was a drop in the left the last time I had the test done as well. This time another drop, definitely noticable. I am to get a new/stronger hearing aid for it. Also to get special plugs for swimming/shower (I get infections if water 'n stuff gets inside my right ear), so at least I will be able to go swimming more (haven't been for a while actually). Yaay.

Audiologist was kind of baffled as to why the hearing loss in left ear but thinks it might be something to do w/th my squint/lazy eye/poor vision in left eye and balance/co-ordination issues/etc. She asked if I had any learning disabilities diagnosed and I said no but that w/th hind sight mum thinks some form of dyspraxia was involved. I was p clumsy when younger/child, lots of falling, bad hand eye co-ordination, dropping things, difficulty holding a pen/writing, difficulty with cutlery, tying shoelaces, etc. I remember getting extra homework/lesson time/etc for handwriting since I was bad at it -_- Also had some physiotherapy. I don't think they had a name for dyspraxia back then though. I mean at first we thought the balance/etc was to do with the mastoid problems I had in my right ear/etc but yeah. I don't know how this works in relation to my left ear but apparently audiologist thinks all these other factors/possible dyspraxia might explain it.

Decided to finally post some DLCon-era pictures -- this is just the group that went to Disneyland last year. I, uh, apparently did not take any pictures whatsoever of the Con itself. I blame it on the rage.

I will also post ComicCon pictures, but I imagine those'll be less interesting to y'all than the darling faces of Soppy, CK, Grefter, DJ, Snow, Andy, Meeple, and VSM. As photographer, I reserve my right to stay right the fuck out of those pictures.

Glad to hear your nana came through alright. I hope her recovery is swift. :)

My grandfather pulled the "Hey, let's go home now!" card every. single. time. we visited him in hospice. It was one of those things that managed to make me smile and remember the grandfather that had spent his life as an officer of the military, always had somewhere to go and something to do, and lived with conviction. Much better memory than the reality of why he was in hospice in the first place.

Not to get morbid or anything. :p Point is, love those moments!

ETA: So stressed out, still. This is week 2 of my trial-by-fire dive into being the sole person in charge of UA for my company. With end of the month wrap-up, tracking, new creatives, managing affiliates, scheduling calls with new partners, reviewing IOs and invoices, reporting to management and production, attending SO MANY MEETINGS, handling both things for PC and mobile, coordinating with the EU teams, creating tickets for designers to create emails for me, creating lists for said emails, sending said emails, reporting on the success of such emails, training other people to help me with simple reports, and writing up documentation so I might actually get vacation some day, I am mentally exhausted. And always behind.

Feeling the pressure of everything being a class A emergency is really messing with my head, especially given the number of things that keep getting pushed to the bottom of the list in terms of priority that are still "#1 priorities".

Idle rumblings at the company. CEO is in the office (which he does rarely), boss took an unspecified vacation Thursday/Friday and then canceled a rescheduling of a meeting I had with him from Friday, our monthly All-Hands Meeting was rescheduled to a week later, and we're about on schedule for getting that announcement about what the Shadowy Investors actually are doing.

On the most extreme side, the company might be going away. On the less extreme side, but still kinda huge, would be dropping the PC division as of the release of our next game +/- 6 months. Most likely it's just more of the same nothing and a string of coincidences.

:( to Andrew

FINALLY starting Practicum tomorrow.  This is kind of a Pre-Student Teaching Student teaching thing in that I go in once a week and do school stuff with a co-op teacher.

This was suppose to start 3 weeks ago.  So why now?  Well, I couldn't contact the teacher until the end of the first week, so that's gone.  Schedule a day the next week, no problem!

...that day gets snowed out...and it's Friday, so that's cool, I'll do it next week!

...this is a district that takes all of President's week off, as opposed to just a few days, so THAT is entirely gone.

So yeah, FINALLY getting it started tomorrow.  Talking to guys doing Student Teaching this semester, apparently Practicum is the biggest bullshit ever because of all the unnecessary nonsense you gotta do (where as Student Teaching is mostly lesson planning, and the occasional seminar class, thus everything feels far more practical, despite more work.)

Wow, dang, sorry to hear about Aeria getting bought out. Hope you guys find new employment soon.

So that Habit RPG thing I linked in Misc Links has made this past week the most productive I've been of my own volition outside of work. My house is actually clean, I'm finally picking up the guitar my friend gave me and starting to play, and I haven't been on Reddit (nor have I wanted to go on Reddit) for over a week. It's kind of sad how much more I care about filling up experience bars than I do about my own self improvement, but whatever.

It's really nice to be getting in touch with music again. I still, unfortunately, don't gain much enjoyment from playing my saxophone, primarily because sheet music is expensive and I am not good at improv, but seeing as almost every rock song in the last 50 years is the same 9 chords in different orders I'm enjoying getting a feel for the guitar by playing through those songs. It's easy to see now why Douchebag McGuitarGuy exists--it's not that hard of an instrument to fake your way through.

Also buckling down and doing intensive study for the JLPT2 in July. Assuming I can keep up the pace I've had for the last week, I don't foresee having any problems passing the exam. And with that, my post-JET job prospects go up quite a bit. I think it'd be good for me to get out of Japalabama and live somewhere else in Japan, but... ugh, working for a Japanese company and never having leisure time. No thanks. Probably will look into some Eikaiwa prospects that will have me living in one of the big cities after next July (or perhaps after next next July...). That'd be nice. The countryside is great for a little bit but I'm starting to realize that I've been out in the styx too long.

Ending.

Oh, coming back to America isn't even an option. That's tantamount to moving back in with my parents.

I won't be staying in Japan, either. The question is how long I will stay here. Working for a proper Japanese company means working 7-wheneverbosswantstogodrankin and catching the last train to do it all over again. Efff that. I will try to work for some school in Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, Kyoto, or Fukuoka for a bit to live the city life before moving on, but how long I stay here in Amakusa (1 or two more years), and how long I stay there is a secret to everyone, especially myself.

There are plenty of businesses that are based in not-Japan that do business with Japan. That's what I'm aiming for now. A European company with dealings in Japan would be ideal, I think, but moving to Australia could be interesting as well. With the number of Japanese descendents and ex-pats in Brazil, I imagine I could probably find something that would take me there, too.

I didn't lose my job. In fact, since the company is 40% lighter I'm up for a raise and a promotion this week and I'm probably being sent for a week or so to the new company to do some training. ಠ_ಠ

Wishing the best for you, Zenny. It sounds like you've found much more of a home over in Japan than you had here. Good luck finding a job with a foreign firm that has an office in Japan -- that would be super awesome.

Just got back from a week in Hawaii at the conference. Presented a research poster on Wednesday as a part of a retirement ceremony for the pioneer of my field, and he even looked at my poster and told me I did a good job. :D Also got an opportunity to talk to an early-30's scientist in my field who said he was looking for PhD. students in New Zealand~ Also attended the retirement party which was a chance to meet some scientists in a bit more of a social capacity. I generally tried to attend a lot of research talks related to my field and otherwise slack and go to the beach.

Climbed up Diamond Head, which was a lookout mountain back when the primary thing done in Oahu was military. It was nice but I am really out of shape! Went to the Pearl Harbor museum and took a tour, where I was impressed with the emphasis on how terrible war is rather than American propaganda. Thumbs up. Saturday we bussed to the north of Oahu where there are some more quiet beaches and took a bunch of pictures and ate at Obama's favorite shaved ice place.  It's very beautiful! I'm just looking a little lobstery now.

Ate a lot of food that was paid for by the school. :D Thai and seafood seems to be the big thing in Hawaii.

Also got to hang out with one of my awesome lab mates a lot. She's from South Korea, so we went out for some Korean food the last night I was there. Yum :). Bought some glorious abortion-loving Girl Scout cookies; the samoas and the savannah smiles. They don't have those flavors in Canada. ;_;

The plane trip home was interesting. It started super turbulent for about 45 minutes, I thought I was going to die but then because of the really fast tailwind we went like 1200 km/hr and got home more quickly. Got home early despite leaving 30 minutes late, which was cool.

And one last thing...

So there's two rival scientists in my field who hate each other. They each had 15 minute talks during the retirement ceremony session and at least one of them spent a lot of his 15 minutes taking shots at the other and his research. So you are given 15 minutes every TWO YEARS at the biggest conference in the field and you spend it ranting about your anime rival? 'kay.

So yeah, it turns out that in ten days, I will be a resident if Nagoya, Japan. I'm going to be teaching at a private kindergarten that specializes in English language learning from an early enough age that true native fluency is possible and I'll be a full teacher this time, not just an assistant. Also I apparently will be teaching the children of rich people since the school's tuition costs are WOW.

Nagoya is the third largest city in Japan and roughly midway between Tokyo and Osaka (numbers 1 and 2) so I won't be stuck a backwoods quiet Jrpg protagonist village this time. Also, it's further south so there's no fear of giant mountains of snow piling up on my streets.

Cody, we should meet up at some point. Particularly if you're going to be job hunting in Nagoya.

I doubt I will make it to DLCon this year though

Anyway, time to uproot my entire life in ten days! Let's see if I crack~

I need advice.

In my latest conversation with my boss over the changes in the company and the influx of new capital from the sale and our conservative executive team, blah blah blah, he suggested that I come up with a proposal for where I'd like to be in six months(?! what about now?).

This is a tricky question. I brought up that I was being recruited almost exclusively for junior/associate or flat-out manager positions, and he went on a tangent saying that Europe may have "manager" positions that don't require direct reports but in the US that title generally connotes managing people, not projects. The implication was that I am not at that stage of my career in his opinion. Which, sure, fine. I don't have an MBA, I've never directly overseen anyone, and there really aren't slots at this company for more managers, particularly in my 5-soon-to-be-6 department. That soon-to-be 6 is a junior associate in my specialty.

But where does that leave me? My title is ass at describing what I do -- Marketing Associate sounds very much more junior that my individual contributor handling all of the user acquisitions for the company with 5+ years of experience -- but I am not sure what he might be receptive to me requesting. At my annual review back in January, he said he doesn't think I'm quite there yet with the "Senior Marketing Associate" title, which was actually pretty surprising to me. That may have changed since the months from hell that had/still have me doing 2-3 people's work all by myself.

He's sending me to Europe to train that office in what we did in the US office for user acquisitions, so there's some level of trust in my expertise there and/or a level of desperation requiring me to handle it because no one else can. But I'm clueless on what to request. Marketing Specialist? Sr. Marketing Associate, User Acquisitions? User Acquisitions Marketing Manager (which actually does have a history of non-personnel management titles)?

/me facedesks.

Heh. Been there. My title of Sales Coordinator at CPM was pretty much the same, misleading since I was actually managing the accounts I was responsible for. To be honest, managing people isn't all that much tougher, though my experience probably doesn't go to the same level of the corporate ladder as yours. As far as your new title, anything more than 3 words, unless it is an important sort of specialty, is generally to be avoided but User Acquisitions Marketing Manager isn't too bad a start, but I don't quite have enough understanding of what you do here at Initech. You should schedule a meeting with the Bobs to discuss this.

Wish could help.  Currently applying for job that is the higher duty I have been doing for 3 years.  Not sure if want to do.  Also applying for stuff in another area that is essentially going back to what I used to do in both my old roles mixed together with some minor project management shuffled in.  Less responsibility but essentially stepping back from the process development, product development, testing etcetc work I have been doing for years now.  Has more focused career path.

Not sure if either is a career path I want to take.  Think the other one would be working in a better team, but not sure if I am best fit for the role.  Current one I think I am an okay fit for the role.  Wondering if they will offer me base level pay, not looking forward to argument of "I have been doing it for 3 fucking years, don't give me entry level pay".

Tell him you would like to add value to the company. Corpos love adding value. (I have nothing useful to add)

In other news, yesterday I passed a kidney stone... probably. The urologist I went to didn't diagnose exactly what happened, just X-rayed me and found that there were no (more) stones in my bladder or kidneys, and I guess is going to analyze my urine? I would assume so but he didn't say anything about it. Anyway I scream when I pee now, I'm peeing a little blood, can't drink alcohol or coffee, and am generally not very happy.

At this age, the next five years are going to establish where I'll be for the rest of my career. Terrifying thought. Also means I need to do more climbing until I reach comfortable middle management level, where responsibilities don't matter and I get to put everything on my subordinates or superiors.

Looking up all the various titles in my field, average salaries, duties, etc. Trying to come up with something. Not going to meet with the boss again about this stuff until next Friday, so we'll see.

I wish we had Bobs. It's way easier to explain to an outsider that I'm awesome than reason with my boss about why the shit he's thrown on me is making things look worse than they are. It's also way easier to get raises and promotions if you change companies, but that's stupid and I'd rather not. Even if this company isn't my favorite. I hate being mercenary.

In other news, I'm like 99% confirmed for Berlin at the end of April. The 1% is maybe they'll send me in, like, two weeks. Hah. Hah. At least we're definitely posting a requisition for the junior associate. Hopefully we fill that spot shortly, and I get to take my time in late April/early May instead of in two weeks. Way calmer then.

Sorry about the kidney stones, Zenny. I've never had them, but every single story I've heard from people who have make me sure I'd rather flay myself.

and badge? wtf is a badge? $700 piece of shit, people still had to pay when capacity was capacity. fuck sxsw logistics, yo. and $100+ bands? fuck that shit too. lots of free events turned into cost events, apparently, and everyone in free event lines ended up being charged 20 bucks etc. only did that once. alo blacc, dj exile, soulection etc was worth it. i'd pay 500 to see sophie, fuckin' love blonde djs from the uk, TWERK IT SOPHIE MAH BOI. not mine. :< anyway. got all the partying out, back to school.

Not sure if I am just old and grumpy.  Went to Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age.  Missed the support but having dinner was higher priority.

Things I don't understand.

Paying $125 for tickets then spending a significant amount of the show walking in and out of the concert hall to go buy overpriced beer.  I may just have noticed this since we were seated off to the side behind a majour thoroughfare.

Taking pictures of the concert.  Constantly.  I guess fans of light shows have to spend a stupid amount of money and put up with music playing just to take happy snaps.  Also don't bother muting while you use multiple picture thingo during quiet songs.  Everyone around you wants to know you are taking photos!

Screaming like you are being stabbed.  Not WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I love this band!  Full blown AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH toneless with your voice tearing.  The entirety of NIN's set.

The above especially, but just in general woooooooo during quiet songs.  Hurt is playing you guys this is my jam!  WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!  Appropriate crowd response to a touching song about personal failure and how it can harm those around you.  The one that was good enough for Johnny Cash to cover right before he died.  Wooooooooooooooooooooooooo.  I know music means different things to different people, but I don't know how the fuck you can like this song in such a way that the immediate response is "wooooooo".  Maybe a minor emotional breakdown, but not "woooooooooooooo".

Fuck crowds.

That said, NIN were really not great.  Their stuff has to be hard to do live, but I just saw Dillinger Escape Plan the other week and they broke my brain with how they reproduced even harder stuff so well.  There was no audience engagement at all either (which to be fair if there is any artist I don't expect to really engage an audience it is Trent Reznor), it was 4 talented musicians wandering around the stage and picking up and playing various instruments well, but not really as a great show.  Queens of the Stone Age were fantastic.  Engaging, played really well, sounded great.  Everything I wanted out of them live.

Heart attacks for the young and infirm.

P90X and Karate have begun to wear on my knees pretty badly. They pop now with basically every movement, and I've had to start wearing bracers to slow down the deterioration. Apparently when your knees are going bad that quickly (good to deteriorating in about 6 months of activity) it indicates that your ankles and hips are not strong/flexible enough compared to the rest of your body, and your knees have to compensate. To that end I started wearing 2kg ankle weights on each leg. It hurts to walk and I'm slow as hell but I feel a little like a dragon ball z character and that makes the retarded 12 year old boy locked in my emotional basement happy.

Seriously considering doubling up on the weights and going to 4k to speed up the process. 2kg on each leg actually isn't that bad, so may as well go big or go home.

Also there are worse things to have happen at an industry event than emotional highs Met, so it sounds like you still had fun even if it was less educational.  As awesome as learning things is it sounds like you had a good time.also pics if you got dressed up for that video[/url]

Work is still stressful but getting better.

They're hiring a minion for me. I'm getting some sort of title promotion to make me sound more official than "Marketing Associate" since I, you know, manage millions of dollars on a monthly basis. They also gave me a 20% raise, so that's nice.

I'm going to Berlin for work at the end of the month, and then I'm taking an extra week and a half to spend some time on vacation. Currently plan to spend some time in Berlin then hit Amsterdam, Paris, London and Edinburgh. Pretty busy schedule, no more than 1-2 days per city, but I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully I actually get to vacation and don't have to keep handling work fires the way I did at DLCon last year.

So... despite Andrew having been laid off, things are looking okay for us.

Anyway...
I need advice.
Think like this is a Fallout choice.

I'm getting tired of my roomate. He's generally a good and nice guy but we really have nothing in common (we both bore each other really) and he doesn't do his shores to the point where I don't ever feel like inviting anyone home. In fact, I haven't done so in three months.

I see all these great roommating opportunities around me and want to go something else.

Do I:
- Tell the truth and start looking for something else
- Lie about needing a real apartment (the thing we have is not strictly legal. But nobody really cares) and start looking for something else. Maybe less hard feelings.
- Search for a new apartment in secret and only tell him about it when it's 100% locked in stone. Ok, writing this now, this sounds like a total douche move. But it's the easiest!! Maybe there are some good and moral reasons to go for this one. That would be great.
- Not do anything, the grass is always greener, etc.

I'm assuming your "strictly not legal" setup is something you're actually fine with. In that case your second proposed option probably isn't a great idea because if you do that, you won't be able to find any other "strictly not legal" places without him seeing through your lie and being far more hurt. (No idea how common these setups are; this may be an irrelevant concern.)

My inclination here (and I'm aware this is much easier for me to say as the person who doesn't have to bring up the subject with your roommate) is just to be honest. It doesn't make much sense for you to stay somewhere where you're unhappy and it's obviously affecting your social life. And "you don't leave your chores so the place is always a mess, I prefer to live some place clean, it's nothing personal but I think this makes us a bad fit" is something that I don't think he'd be likely to take too badly. (I'd stay away from the part about him being boring though.)

Have you talked at all before about him cleaning up more? (It's not he may not be aware this is a problem.)

1. Don't do number 3. This makes you an asshole. Don't be an asshole (to people you see face to face).

2. I don't actually understand what the big deal is. Renters move out, like, all the time. It's not like you're quitting your job, either. You don't actually HAVE to give a reason if you don't want to (but do give notice because seriously don't be a dickhole). If you just said "yeah this isn't working, I need to get out, just a heads up" that could be that. If he wants a reason well then you can talk about the cleanliness issue but seriously it shouldn't be an issue.

3. If you REALLY need to give a reason, and you REALLY don't want to tell the truth, just say you need to move closer to work/closer to school/a better location to find a new job/etc. Hell, if you know someone you want to live with, just say you're gonna move in with X because they need a roommate.

Just take a breath, realize this isn't actually the confrontation you're building it up to be in your mind, and start lookin' for a new place.

PS. Don't be a douchebag.

"I just want to try something" is a perfectly valid reason to do anything.  Like following a strange man through a portal into an unknown prison dimension that is designed to keep a godlike being trapped.  Then following them in to literal hell and back just because it sounds interesting.

What I am saying is that you are a succubus.

Jokes aside, be honest or have a soft obfuscation.  Sounds like you just want to try something else.  That is as good a reason as any.

Edit - Fuck I realised you described it as a Fallout choice hours after the fact.   My joke should have been to either plant lit dynamite in his inventory or force feed enough drugs to him that he dies 10 minutes later then no one will know it was you.

Nah I do want something fully legal this time.
I'm not on the lease agreement so I don't have to pay a housing tax. But the landlord has to know about this for this to be legal, and he doesn't.
He probably doesn't care, but he could kick me out anytime for this (and I wouldn't care at all)

Have you talked at all before about him cleaning up more? (It's not he may not be aware this is a problem.)
Yes. But he has no willpower. That's his biggest weakness. He's not going to do something for himself, let alone others. His room is The Room Of Death and he still has invited girls there. He might be motivated for like one hour then never again for a month.

The problem is that he has become nicer and nicer BUT I still want out.
Guilt.
Basically he's the only guy I know who doesn't hurt others (much) and that I have still started to judge unfavorably. And I hate everything about this.

Quote
My joke should have been to either plant lit dynamite in his inventory or force feed enough drugs to him that he dies 10 minutes later then no one will know it was you.
I don't have any dynamite in my inventory and can't pass the science check

Everything else: Okay. Yes. Makes sense.
I don't really see myself not giving any reason though, we've been living together for 7 months already.

done this before, depends on the personality. if they're vindictive, search for an apt in secret and just leave, it's not like you need him for referrals but do give time to inform him of "i have this great opportunity I'm going to try out."

if the person is cool, you just want something more fulfilling, then yeah, what zenny said. if someone's gonna hate that you want to be self-sufficient or are looking for new experiences, then they're gunna hate. if you're helping him out tons financially, be a good human being and let them know beforehand.

that said, I'm going to bounce from the dl, no not delete the acct. but i'm not playing games right now and i need to focus on my prospectus writing, because, yeah, due september. so I'm on skype as jewjewls, but my extent here will be peepin' and creepin'. good spring/summer, and OMG ill totally creep on dlcon pics. its safe to say that if we dont talk this doesnt matter, but if we do heads up.

Oh my god a man asked me if I had a boyfriend today and told me I was beautiful. The Big Issue seller.

I am an idiot. As you can imagine I was quite flustered at the time, he said he stayed in *insert place name* here and I said said that's where my mum stayed in small talk, then he asked if I had a boyfriend and I said no not at the moment, then he said I was beautiful and I said thank you politely and sort of stumbled my way around this conversation by saying I'd had a few relationships but was just relaxing, taking a break, seeing how life went. I probably didn't make any sense.

This is a guy I am familiar with at least face wise and in a be CT nice and polite/etc to way. I buy the Big Issue off him, am a regular customer in that sense (I'm usually with another person). I just ... want to be nice to/help people. Stuff happens.

That said it is always a rush to be called beautiful (even if not true, my hair hadn't been washed today) >_> <_< >_> <_<

This was also my second encounter with the guy today since earlier he crossed the road to sell me his last Big Issue. Then later is when I saw him at the bus stop and the conversation happened.

Business trip went pretty well. Vacation also went pretty well. Returning to work has not been quite as sunny.

At least I'm looking forward to going to E3 on the company dime in a few weeks. That'll be a nice "break" from the 10-15 hour days and frequent Saturday/Sunday hours. Except for the part where I'll have to schedule all my meetings around needing to check in with the office every hour or two.

Please, universe, send me a really good hire so I can look at other jobs? Pretty please?

Walking around today, there are too many game stores readily available to me, I could easily spend a lot of money on games I have already played...

In particular are the PSP releases if the N1 games. La pucelle and Makai Kingdom never got released in English so it'd be neat to try those out. There's also a few random JRPGs that looked cool. Garnet Chronicle and Errant Knight Story. A new Digimon RPG that doesn't look like crap sounds fun after all the Pokemon games I finished lately. The big I want is the PSP Suikoden game though. All PSP games though and I never use that thing so I didn't bring it with me.

The 3DS doesn't offer as much temptation. Most of its RPGs are available in English. Youkai Watch looks awesome though. Seriously digging how much Level 5 is embracing its Pokemon theft. Ace Attorney 5 also exists but like hell am I gonna play a text adventure in Japanese...

But since I am a boring adult, I bought a couch instead.

I have to make minor revisions to the thesis, make sure it is by the guidelines in terms of page margins and all that, and I need to apply to graduate. Hopefully will get my letter of completion in the next month so I can apply for a Canadian work visa.

Defense itself was pretty good. Had some trouble with the analytical chemistry part of the defense because there was a bit of a communication disconnect, but the oceanography went well. There was even a part where he asked me a question, I answered, and he was about to follow up with a criticism of something in my work and I guessed what the criticism was. :p I actually ended up getting an A on the defense, whatever that even means. Apparently some job apps differentiate between 'pass' and what your score was, so woot.

In the interim I am going to mostly sit on my ass and do things I enjoy. Can't reasonably work right now since my student visa runs out in a couple months and I don't have a work visa.

But I played SSB4, Disney Fantasia, and walked by everything else in between sales meetings. Tomorrow I'm gonna check out Destiny for sure, spend some time playing P4 Arena Ultimax, check out the Squenix booth to see what they've got playable, and actually enjoy some of the show since I only have 2 meetings instead of 12.

Ashley is playing Marketing, I thought?

You dumbass, the verb is do, not play. Who fucking says "I play marketing"? Nobody. Dipshit.

Actually wait most of our students would say that because #EnglishEducationInJapan. Yaaaaaay

Speaking of, I think I may have made a mistake signing up for year 4. Part of it is that I am just starting to get sick of all the little things about the country. The passive aggression, the unnecessary babying when it comes to simple tasks that, yes were helpful 3 years ago, now are just a sign that no matter how long you are here for the chances of being taken seriously are slim and none.  A bigger part is that all the projects I was building up, the curriculum I was implementing at my elementary schools and what not, were completely overtaken at two of my schools this year because the Board of Education wanted to implement their own English program (it's fucking godawful, oh my god... seriously, they spend 3 classes, 3 weeks, teaching nine year old kids to count to ten in English. Holy fucking shit let's just bore the kids to death for fucks sakes), and it is really starting to piss me off that nothing that I do in this town will actually have any permanence. I need to find a job where I'm not just building up walls to see them torn down the next day like a fucking soviet peasant. Fffffffffffffffff.

My job is changing in July, at least, and I'm moving over to a different Board of Education that is implementing a different curriculum, one that is not only less godawful and boring, but that I will have a hand in designing the lessons for for next year. I'm hoping that the change of pace solves my problems, but if not I'll have my loans paid off and I can take the risk of moving somewhere else (perhaps in Tokyo?) and finding a job there. For now though, things here are starting to be too frustrating to be worth it.

Actually, I'm teaching at Preschool, so most of my students hardly speak Japanese, so they haven't learned any terrible English habits yet, and they are picking up proper pronunciation and sentence structure with a speed that can only be attributed to a human child's innate capacity for inheriting language because there's no way I'm that good of a teacher.

Not having to unlearn things helps a lot. Adults can learn too, and have the context to learn faster if they choose to use it (most don't), but kids don't have to get over all the rules and experience with language that comes with age. Lucky little bastards.

Zenny: I hope things turn around for you. If you actually are able to help shape the program, that should help. Nothing like living in a crazy place by someone else's crazy rules without any chance to change anything.

--

Speaking of... in a far less extreme way but frustrating in its own right has been my job with my current company (that is also Laggy's current company and is formerly Andrew's company). They gave me a raise and a promotion and promised the company would change, but there just isn't room there for me to do what I want to do, which is shaping strategy and brand and actually doing things that are different instead of just repeatedly going "hey guys, that's dumb, do it this way" only to be ignored and come back to it three months later where everyone says "hey guys, that was dumb, we should have done it this way, let's do that now" when it's too late.

So I did what any normal person tired of their job but seeing an acceleration in their career overall would do: I took a new job.

I start with Sega (mobile) in July. It's another raise, a new title, lots of nifty perks, but most importantly it's taking my career in the direction I want it to go, i.e., not continuing to work with data everyone else ignores. Plus it's in San Francisco proper so I don't have to live in godawful South Bay anymore, yay!

I have no idea why, but the teachers are alternately dressing up as Afro wearing aliens and wandering around scaring children today. So of course I asked if I could do it too.

My only regret is that I couldn't get a picture.

Stranger danger drills? For some reason to teach the kids how to act when an unauthorized (and potentially dangerous) person is on campus they dress a teacher up in an afro and sunglasses and march everyone into the gym.

There's a whole lot of disgusting subtext to it actually that makes it seem a lot less cute than it did at first. And that sentence basically sums up Japan right there.

It was a lot more sedate than that. They definitely weren't doing stranger danger, the effect was more like goofy monsters. I suspect it has something to do with chasing out oni or some obscure  Tanabata thing.

Earlier this month I had been informed that I was preferred candidate for a promotion I applied for an Feb.  Same day I had another area ask if I was interested in something coming up.

Trying to choose between staying safe where I am or something risky (possibly having to quit to go on contract in another area for the same company instead of full time, would probably end up moving to do the job).  At first I thought I was okay with the latter really.  As soon as it comes down to actually make a choice I start to feel queasy and sick.   I panic.  See if I can still go with first choice.  Think I have chosen that.  Feel queasy and sick still.

I hate my brain.  I can't even handle good things.

Yay business mercenaries!

Typically this would be where I ask myself the stupid interview questions you hate to hear: Where do I want to be in 5 years? What do I think are my greatest strengths? Weaknesses? It helps me decide if I'm taking on the new thing just for the novelty or if it really will be an improvement and/or positive change -- not the same things, incidentally -- and also which one will use my strengths and not rely on the areas I'm weakest in. There's an argument for pushing yourself into something uncomfortable to force you to grow your skills if you know you'd need it for that job five years down the road.

Of course I've been told that I sound like I'm fresh from a stupid business school seminar half the time, so, you know, being a corporate whore eventually makes you sound like one.

Either way, congratulations!

I need to buy a pair of shoulder pads for my pants suit.

No idea on the pay on the one I have gone with (because that is how this stuff works when you are working on a tight time frame to deliver a decision.  Information sparse environment).

I think I am okay with my decision now.  I have intellectualised it as realising I have two good choices to make, not a good and a bad one with a right and wrong.

I don't believe that of course.  I am just relieved a decision has been made and I can go back to not thinking about myself as a human being.

Holy shit, when did I last post here?  Summary of things, I guess.

Work: 4 years in, hard to believe.  Teacher of the year award again, 3 papers submitted and accepted, with 3 more in the works, and part of a major national committee and state committee.  3rd resident starts soon, presenting at a meeting in DC in August.  Been good - going up for promotion either next year or the year after.  Other than the slightly annoying commute, pretty good!

Personal: Same old.  4 cats, wedding in less than a year.  And going to DL Con (frankly, the thing I am most excited about coming up soon).  I made a vow to actually be on Facebook to keep in touch, but I keep forgetting to check in on internet places and make posts.  So yeah, need to do that more >_>

Congrats on the jobs peeps!  Great to hear!

Failed the JLPT N2 for sure. I probably have a good enough overall score to pass, but I bombed the vocabulary section because I've never seen any of the words they had asked me about before. On more than a few occasions I could have answered the question about EVERY other word in the sentence except the one they wanted. Oh well.  On the plus side, the grammar was stupidly easy and my long-form reading comprehension was better than expected. I have a very good idea of where I need to focus to pass in December, so while it was a waste of money I suppose it was overall a positive experience. Bought a new set of study materials, N1 for Grammar, N2 for Reading and Vocabulary. N1 may be out of my reach before I get sick of living in this country, but my goal from the outset was N2 so I'm pretty happy about that.

Downside, I fucking lost my cellphone in a drunken haze (honestly surprised it hasn't happened more often). The phone itself is more of a pain in the ass because navigating the ridiculous formal language of cellphone customer support is an undertaking in and of itself, but I'm more upset about losing my photos. I hadn't backed up my photos for over a year. Seriously disappointed about that.

Well, now that that is over with it is time to fret about moving for the next month. Then, adjusting to the new job. At least I will have summer break to pour over the lesson plans and recordings the teacher currently heading the program has made.

I am also considering taking the DELTA certification course, but frankly with the job and a lack of ADD meds it sounds kind of overwhelming to do all at once. Still, it would help me quite a bit professionally... and would actually mean I don't take the JLPT again in December to not stress myself out. Blah. We'll see.

Bench pressed 100kg for the first time today.  Got 2 reps first set, single on second set.

165kg deadlifts earlier in the week beating my target of 160 by 5kg and my last PB by 7.5.

Succeeded at the weights I wanted to do.  No more targets.  Feels good.

Holy shit.

Questions:

1. You do mostly weight lifting with cardio only being a warmup. What was your starting BMI and what are you at now?
1.5. Starting and ending weight?
2. What was the bench/deadlift weight you started at?
3. How many days a week do you lift?
4. What was your weight of progress? Like, how long did it take you to go from 40k to 45k?
5. nudespls
Title: Re: Good Morning, 2014! #firstworldproblems edition
Post by: Grefter on July 19, 2014, 01:29:49 PM
All this with the disclaimer of this is power lifting training.  This is specifically training for strength, not to put on size, tone or to lose weight (though having some muscle helps lose weight because you use more energy).  Edit - Also with the disclaimer of I am not actually any good at this shit with how to do it and that weight is really really nothing special.  It is just a personal goal that is much happy time.

1.  I don't really do much cardio during weight sessions.  I do like 500 metres on a rower (so like 4 minutes because lol@myendurance).  My cardio is normally separate during bootcamps or my boxing session.  Otherwise I walk a lot more than I ever used to now that I moved a few months ago.  Walk to work (20 minutes), walk to the gym from home (40 minutes).  My starting BMI would be like 52, now would be 32 which still says I am obese.  I still have a chunk of body fat on me that I would like to drop off, but it is hard to do while still aiming to increase strength, so blargh.

That said, usual complaints about BMI goes here, it still says I am obese, let alone overweight.  I would be wicked shredded at mid 70 kgs.

1.5 around 140kg when I started training.  92kg this afternoon after having a mad large curry for dinner the previous night with 3 servings of Naan.  I float around 90-92.

2.  Bench 20kg (the bar), probably after doing some light Dumbbell bench.  Deadlifts I started a few months into training (lots of general fitness stuff to address), but I started repping at like 60kg.  This was well after I started doing back squats.  I started those at 20kg too.  And THOSE were started after I had been killing it on a leg press for a couple of months.  Technique super super super important in all these lifts.  Started at light weight to train the body to do it properly both for form and to make sure you get the most work you can out of it.

3.  I bench twice a week (one assistance dumbbell work), deadlift once a week and squat another.  There is other ways to do this obviously.  There is a bunch of assistance stuff on each of these days other than those exercises.  In a good week I go to 2 or 3 bootcamps also (sometimes flow into one from assistance bench) and I do boxing for cardio another day of the week.

4.  Well I work in to a time frame to try and get conditioned for 1 rep max.  So one week when I am doing like 60 kg bench for 6 reps, the next I might do 70 kg for 5 or whatever.  When I was starting off though and had technique pretty right?  Not sure if this is optimal, but we went up 2.5 or 5 kilos when I started to get 10 reps at a weight.  Sometimes it was only a couple of weeks, sometimes it was longer.

For me last PB of 95 to the 100 now?  4 months.  but I should have been able to do it in April, but choked.

5. Here is one of me flexing (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/45/The_Thinker%2C_Auguste_Rodin.jpg)

Looking at old good morning topics is interesting/a bit depressing. There is the usual poor life choice crew (Myself, Zenny) a bunch of people who don't really post any more (ID, Strago). The big thing is the difference in posts. 40+ pages of posts in the 2009 good morning this time in 2009. Whoof.

Moved. My supervisor who came over to help move left a window open and my cat got out, and he ran away. :( This was yesterday. I left him food and left the house open and will try to go get him tomorrow. Too busy with visa and karate stuff today. A little worried about the little prick. Hopefully he will be waiting for me.

Don't have shit to do this weekend, so will be keeping an eye on him to make sure he doesn't pee everywhere and is getting enough attention to feel relaxed. Cat pheromones have been sprayed and this is supposed to help a lot. We'll see.

Met my bosses and coworkers at the BoE yesterday. Holy crap apparently I am relatively high up the ladder now. O_o. Definitely higher up than most non-advisor ALTs. Time for the anxiety to set in I guess. But anxiety aside this is what I wanted. Being as high up as I am I won't get handed down any retarded edict from the BoE telling me to teach really simple, ineffective lessons or told to stop teaching something because I wasn't to be trusted to handle the lessons on my own. And, with it all kind of riding on my shoulders, my reputation is at stake enough to curbstomp any laziness or complacency I may develop later into the job. This... this is good. I think.

So nothing that wasn't already soaked in worse anyway.

Reminding myself to make a "hey, I live, nothing special going on" post so that folks don't think my entire life is nothing but bad shit. I exist. Still living with in-laws so maybe my life IS nothing but bad shit right now, but there's already a hard time limit on this  so it's not really that bad.

I did miss Jenna finally roping her family into playing CAH yesterday, since I was hanging out with Dracos. Apparently hilarity was had, including such gems as "And the Academy Award for (not giving a shit about the third world) goes to (white people)." and literally everyone at the table having some sort of variant on young boys type of card to play when "What was the last thing that went through Micheal Jackson's head before he died?" came up. Her dad wants no part of this game again, but I should be here for the next one once Jenna's mother and sister recover from the embarrassment of playing the game.

So we are finally back from our adventures in Scotland and Northern England. tldr; went to a lot of museums and roamed around the various areas.

We went to the art gallery with Clear Tranquil on the first non jetlag day. I learned that some of the earlier art doesn't appeal to me because it's just hundreds of pictures of Baby Jesus. Later stuff was more diverse and better though. Drove to a few random little towns near Edinburgh, including Robert Owen's little village, who apparently a factory owner who didn't hate his employees and later was the founder of British socialism. I learned a lot of Scottish history via tapestries, which were quite well done I must say, and went to the Scottish National Museum, which was mostly natural history and technology themed.

After a week in Edinburgh we were off to Northern England, where we stayed in a little village. We mostly went and saw a variety of Roman ruins because where we stayed was nearish to Hadrian's wall and other Roman forts that had had recently excavated ruins. Some of the altars were extremely well-preserved, which I was impressed by. It's crazy to think about how long it took Europe to catch up to the hygiene standards of the Romans. Other than that, we watched a play in an open field with six players, which was quite charming, and went to the Lake District a bit, which is filled with tourists. Still didn't get to visit London, though. >:(

Overall I had a lot of fun but I am currently jetlagged after 16-17 hours of travel.

1.5x current rent, or 1.4x when you take into account the lesser commute cost, in-unit w/d, utilities covered, etc. But if you factor in how much of my time is wasted, I'm making a ton of money just by shaving it down to 30 minutes.

Give and take, but hey, it's the Bay Area. Justifying ridiculous expenditure comes with the territory.

Work is going well. I have gotten a few special projects (well, asked/worked for them and so received). One of them requires me to go up to Seattle the week before my mother's birthday, so I'm taking a vacation and dragging Andrew up to see them for the first time in, like, 5 years. They don't ever come visit me.

Looking forward to a business trip to the UK in October. Kind of hoping it doesn't interfere with my 10-year high school reunion, kind of hoping it will. Since I might get a trip to SEGA headquarters toward the end of this year, early next, I decided to start taking Japanese lessons (which the company is paying for).

Also, because commute, I am getting a motorcycle endorsement on my license. Hopefully in the next 6 weeks I can bring my commute back down from 1.5 hours to 45 minutes to <20 minutes (current, the new commute once I move, motorcycle commute). It will be nice to have a life again.

Also been looking at puppies because our new place, into which we move September 5, will allow us to have a dog again. I found an amazing little border collie puppy that was super mellow and friendly, but Andrew's not ready for a bigger dog yet (border collies are ~35 pounds when grown) so we're sticking to the small ones. That way, even if we do end up with another Tally, they can't sever arteries.

So raw was good, Rob? I saw on SA that you were going, but I missed the show.

It wasn't without its issues but overall it was a lot of fun. Paul Heyman's promo was a masterpiece, Dean Ambrose is still the best guy, Ric Flair and Roddy Piper and the nWo were all there, Heath Slater got bigger pops than John Cena or Seamus...

Holy shit that may be the least interesting sentence you've ever typed, boy-o.

Zenny sums up Pro Wrestling so well: "Obsolete now that Gay Porn is free and abundant on the internet."

Summer Vacation has been pretty relaxing, but today I decided to break that streak by taking a day trip to Kyoto with my boyfriend and co-workers. Japan set a mountain on fire while it was raining, so that was interesting. Then they set four more mountains on fire. The Daimonji festival is cool.

Kyoto was packed, so the room I booked was apparently double-booked but we got compensated for our troubles and the owner put us up in his brother's guest house with two other overbooked guests. At first I was like "whut?" but the other guests were cool and the guest house was really nice. Had a great time but it really put a damper on romantic-times when you're stuck in what amounts to a really nice dorm room.

So I'm in Oklahoma. Been mostly visiting with my mom and dad, trying to connect with friends and family, and generally trying to have a good time. I visited my grandmother on her birthday, and then visited my other grandmother and stayed the night with her.

It is very depressing there. My brother and grandmother both seem depressed as hell (and constantly bicker). Had to go back to Mom and Dad's because I was getting so sad.

Andrew wasn't kidding, y'all are terrible at this.

Interestingly enough, we'd already considered Missile and Pylon. A Lovecraftian name was considered but if we do that it'll probably just go on the official paperwork. Townsend's Crawling Chaos ("Nyarlie" for short) is amusing but probably challenging to explain. I can imagine that conversation. "Oh he's so cute! What's his name?" "Nyarlie." "... is that a family name?"

Bitch Please might induce gender confusion. We do not wish to impose cisgender, heteronormative ideals upon any living creature.

Tam's interesting, especially with the Wheel of Time connection. (Which was probably unintentional). Also top 100 lists are names to avoid. I swear to god when we took Tally to puppy classes, every other puppy was named "Bella." Not coincidentally, this was during the height of the Twilight craze. Who does that?!

Maybe we'll just call him Nemo.

Writing an english CV.

So last year my formation was : One week at the university, then three months working for a company (as an internship), then repeat. It's called an "alternance" in France. Does this exist in english? How would you translate it?
Title: Re: Good Morning, 2014! #firstworldproblems edition
Post by: Lady Door on September 24, 2014, 01:12:26 AM
Depends on your goals in your CV, but IIRC from my last conversation about such things with coworkers, it would be understood as a work/study training program.

Work/study has its own connotations in America (typically a form of financial aid for a college degree) but it gets across the idea.

Alternately, you could just use internship. If the years of your education wrap around the date of the alternance, everyone will understand what that means.
Title: Re: Good Morning, 2014! #firstworldproblems edition
Post by: Grefter on September 24, 2014, 01:18:08 AM
So it is various different companies you are interning at or is it the same one you go back to?

Google spat out

alternance
      nf   alternation
en alternance      alternately
formation en alternance      sandwich course

So "Alternation" appears to be a one word term equivalent, but not one that you would see in common parlance.

I would probably describe it as one internship alternating 3 weeks practical on site, 1 week theory at school.

I'm still job hunting myself, but this is probably about the worst time of the year to look for jobs in science, since grants to do research are distributed in January-March. So I've been doing other stuff to stay happy. First, I got a few books from the library and I'm trying to teach myself how to draw. So far it's been decent but a bit humbling. I feel in some ways that it's tapping some potential that I've always had, but right now it's a little painful to look at the pictures. I've also been working on a romantic fantasy novel for NaNoWriMo. I'm trying to use it as a way to teach myself to be consistent in my writing, so I'm attempting not to do too much in any one day, but to do a bit every single day. I also checked out some books on creative writing from the library for NaNo but I haven't actually touched them yet. Oh well. I've also tried to keep in better touch with my parents and grandmother since I have more time to just sit around and chat with people. I also cooked some tasty brownies. :)

Aside from staring into the dwindling void that is my bank account, it's been a pretty pleasant couple of months.

I guess everyone's growing up and either failing to do anything interesting enough to talk about, or being disinterested in complaining/chatting about it. Oh well - I still haven't grown out of that.

Those of you who've been around a while have seen my repeated interest in and failure to buy(ing) San Diego Comic Con badges. This year, I totally facepalmed and remembered that I could qualify for a trade professional badge. So I applied and I've been accepted. Woo hoo!

It doesn't mean I'm guaranteed a badge, but it does make it a heck of a lot more likely that I can get one. Plus, if I do, trade pros get priority badge pickup and a special fancy lounge. A special fancy lounge that other industry professionals also have access to...

The badge sale for pros isn't until early next year, but, woo hoo! Another chance to get badges!

FB kind of filled the void that the good morning topic filled for me. Anyway, right now I'm just working retail still. I have a job interview next week I'm excited about. It's just nice to get a callback from a job I'd want, rather than a job that pays the bills and passes the time.

Yeah you're either job hunting or like working. Even my job has settled into a work-game-sleep routine after 3 years. I guess I could talk about stressing about what to do after my contract limit is up but meh I got games to fail at. No news is usually good news.

Also, congrats on Comic Con.

Good morning. I love my job. I really do.

But it is tiring. I'm just really worn out every day after all the daily life stuff on top of the really long workdays and long-ass commutes.

I am so tired that I no longer have the energy to debate about video games on the internet. That's how tired I am. So if my posts seem a little truncated lately, it's not because I'm trying to be pithy and dismissive. It's because an effort post with impassioned pleas to emotion for awesome games... requires energy I don't have. (NieR is awesome)

I do like Xillia. And no, you don't have to like everything I do, but NieR is literally the game I listed as my number one favorite and I do enjoy talking about games and debating their merits. So even if I disagree with you, it's a conversation I want to have and hopefully allow you to see where I'm coming from as a separate perspective on this game you seem to really hate. But goddamn, I am half-asleep, typing this excuse for my excuse. Actual debate just isn't happening. Is it Christmas break yet? I miss free time.

Well, once you're not so overwhelmed and exhausted, I'd like to read something about how Nier connected to you (or to other DLers who really liked it), just as I'm interested basically any time someone is able to articulate why a form of media or whatever really works for them. I went through all of the content and found things to a lot to like, such as the detailed backstory, the soundtrack, surprisingly powerful emotional moments from characters you wouldn't expect (as well as other reversals in expectation), and touches like the weapon stories (which are always welcome and are a positive part of even shit games like Drakengard 3). In the end, though, I didn't walk away from it really connecting with it the way that some others have. It may be that articulating something that personally works for you to that extent is extremely difficult if not impossible to convey, especially to someone who doesn't like it, but I think it's worthwhile to try.

This is a bit of an aside, but when I first played Dark Souls, I did like it but didn't quite understand why everyone was so obsessed with it until I listened to the Bonfireside Chat podcast. It was just great to listen to two people who really loved the game just talk about and dissect the lore and each stage of the game with the depth that they did, and they covered a lot of things that I hadn't noticed or found. I did a replay (the first of many) and had a renewed appreciation for things that passed over me, and at that point, I really understood the hype. So again, while some things about your feelings about a game/whatever may be difficult to communicate, I can say definitively that my opinion has been swayed by people who were able to articulate themselves well about it (the same for me is true of good literary/film criticism).

If you want to see that kind of thing go well Duck, I had similar experience of trying to understand why people liked dark Souls as much as well.  Like every time Fenrir and acid posted about it last year they got the third degree from me trying to understand it.  I think I kind of understood before I started listening to Bonfireside Chat, but it was listening to that which softened me up enough to give it a try myself.  Now It struggle to articulate what it is I liked about I.

For a bad experience though, do the above for me and FF13 where I get into arguments with people I love over a game I don't like but can't leave alone trying to understand the appeal.

The intrinsic difference there is that Dark Souls is actually a good game and FF13 is actually a terrible one.

Bah. I don't know if I could even articulate on NieR properly. Read the LP if you want to hear much more eloquent and in depth scene by scene analyses of why it's a great game. I think for me a lot of my attachment for it came from how the writers used very distinct dialogue choices to characterize the main cast as a reflection of how the power of words and stories as a kind of subtle aesthetic and undercurrent theme in the game and from there I just latched onto all the pieces of the game that branched out of that. Run on sentence because stream of consciousness answer. No time for editing a proper effort post.

Dirty FFT Practice. Reset twice from really stupid shit (not getting enough Chemist JP on units. Once for Ramza. One for second Chemist). I really am not sure I want to keep playing this game. Unlike the other speedruns I do, the starts are just so rough and making a single tiny error is all it takes for the entire thing to go up in smoke. Also, I am nowhere near as good as FFT as I am with Wild ARMS so even though I get things, my times are still significantly slower. But since I already submitted this, I guess I am committed. Fuck :|

I already knew about that yeah.

And Tide, that thing is 6 months in advance if you really don't think you have a good run the people involved will appreciate knowing this far in advance, it gives you or them better time to find a more appropriate game.

Or do you need to find a safer route?  I dunno.  Maybe you need to steal Vancouver Crew for a group play of it (if you live in an alternate dimension where that is actually a thing that could happen).

I've thought about dropping but there's a few issues with that:
1) The other games I offered are between 5.5 hours to 9.5 hours. Basically I don't think I can give them another game without completely resigning
2) Because I submitted other games, I feel like leaving would make it appear like I'm rage quitting because I didn't get my first choice in (or even second/third, etc).

Past that I *do* want to attend. I'm just finding this entire thing very discouraging because I can't see or feel any improvement. I was going to practice again today, but I just ended up putting it off. And see, that's part of the problem. It's like I'm not enthused about going to do it. When I did Wild ARMS 4 last year, I had a lot more gusto and wasn't so meh to the entire ordeal.

The route is pretty optimized so I don't know if the Vancouver group can really help me there. What they can help with if they actually have time is to watch the parts where I don't have much of a script to follow and scrutinize. I mean like when you're forced to take extra math turns, or doing the job grind to open up calculator. Or even Mandalia/Gariland in the beginning less the objectives you need to meet. Like, the route is safe. Its just super easy to forget or miss something and when that happens, you're dead in the water.

ACTUALLY, Highspirits DID route Dragon Quest 7 and ran it. I believe it was like 17:54:XX or something. I personally don't think Lunar 2 is that good of a choice for a long run myself (my personal vote would've been for FF7 if you wanted more donations/viewers) but they want to try something different. Its just a bit of a shame since I personally feel of course that Wild ARMS 3 is a very cool run and could be that long game. But they already put Wild ARMS 1 in and diversity and all that good jazz.

Quote
Anyway Tide is that really that much of a problem since there are two backups? Don't put pressure on yourself.

I guess part of it is the jitters or just over expectations. I mean, you're right Fenrir, in that they don't expect a WR level run (it would be impossible given FFT's opening). But I feel like 4:30:XX should be easily attainable. Why can't I do it? I'm losing like 10+ minutes in Chapter 1, its kinda ridiculous. And I can't really see what I'm doing wrong, which is the further frustrating part.

Just for the record since people may not know what I mean by FFT openings, here are all the ways your run can die and you have no control over it:
- An overly long Orbonne. Dependent on if the 6 guests in that fight act stupidly and do things like cast Blind and Cure 2 when they can just hit things
- An overly long Gariland. Dependent completely on the enemy's side compatability
- Bad starting generics. In particular, getting a low Faith (sub 55) Female Chemist. Also bad are low overall faith on your other units. In addition, it is HIGHLY preferable if the units you have are either neutral/bad/worst comp with Ramza. It is also preferable, if these same units have GOOD/BEST compatability with Delita.
- Ramza with low starting Chemist JP is a death sentence because he gets Chemist JP mainly from spillover
- Algus getting a knockback in Mandalia, which screws up the formation, forcing you to use back up on Delita, which can't be used if your generics have bad/worst compatability with Delita
- The enemies getting a crit on Algus and putting him into Critical, which makes him run away, thus screwing up the formation
- If you are forced to grind in Thieves, getting charmed by one of the male thieves and not having a turn staggered in between is basically GG.
- Having 5-6 enemies on the Calculator grind and multiple of them having bad faith with your Wizards.
- Actually, overall low faith on enemies, which can make Chapter 1 take longer due to needing multiple castings of Bolt 2.

Here are all the stupid ways your run can end if you do something dumb:
- Not getting enough Chemist JP on the female Gariland Chemist
- Not getting enough Chemist JP on Ramza and second Female Chemist by Mandalia Plains
- Not learning Potion/P.down in Chemist
- Not learning Yell/Accumulate like you're supposed to
- Not setting Gained JP Up like you're supposed to
- Not getting the 500 JP needed for Yellcumulate by the end of Mandalia.
- Forgetting to learn things in Black Magic
- Forgetting to equip the proper Skill-set after learning the abilities. This includes: Guts, Math Skill and Item.
- Charging a spell on your guest but the guest has time inbetween to move.

Other easy ways to screw up your run but these are recoverable:
- Not equipping Delita with Battle Boots before Sand Rat
- Forgetting to strip Delita after Mandalia
- Forgetting to strip Algus of armor but making sure he has a weapon and boots.

The fastest I've ever gotten out of Chapter 1 is about 1:35:XX. I kinda of want to make that sub 1:30:XX, which is very reasonable. For the record, Claude's WR gets out of Chapter by like 1:10:XX, so yeah.

Is 4 hours 30 mins really enough safety for FFT?  I mean the SDA hosted run is multiple segment and is 4 hours 20 mins...

Even with an extra 10 minutes that seems an aggressive timing on a volatile game.

4h30m gives him about 28 minutes leeway compared to the current world record run for the category (SDA's run is way old by now).

Man I really don't know what to tell you, I've never done speedruns.
There might just be a lot more competition for FFT than other games you're used to speedrunning, because it's a more well known and loved game. Hence, lower times, more insane things expected from speedrunners.

I've gone to your twitch channel but I don't even know how to access your videos there. I just don't know. I feel like an old man using Internet for the first time. What the hell is wrong with Twitch? I can go on torrent sites and often find on a first try the right "download" link among a million fake download links. But I can't go on a Twitch channel and find videos.

Fenrir: I have no idea why Twitch hides this, but you have to go and add "/profile" to the end of the URL.  Then you can click on "past broadcasts" and "highlights" from there. You'd THINK there'd be some link to the profile page on the stream page, but if there is, I haven't found it.

Tide: Fenrir said it already, but there are *two backups* for FFT.  You shouldn't feel obligated at all if prepping FFT feels more like work than fun.  And if you do run FFT, then just warn 'em that they're not going to see a WR attempt and add 15 minutes to the estimate.  Worst that happens is they turn you down, and it'll be less stressful, and even if you go over who cares.  Also if you just want to go to the marathon on general principles, then you can always offer to run something else...

Although, looking at the link...  no more Crystals4Life?  What happened, Poxnor just not want to run it again?

Hey now.  If you're serious about a good time (which I'd argue you shouldn't be, backup strats are interesting & amusing), just have a handy backup save that has good generics & high Chemist JP post-Gariland.  If your marathon-playthrough of it is shenanigans, just load the save and announce you're totally cheating because trashing the run due to bad luck early is lame.  I know this gets done especially for speedruns where part of it is "now, grind for a low-percentage drop" in marathons...   just have a save handy at that point post-drop in case the game refuses to be cooperative.

An 8 hour Lunar 2 speedrun sounds like the worst thing. Next to a 40 hours Dragon Quest 7 speedrun?

Actually, the Lunar 2 speedrun by HighSpirits was done at the recent scrubathon, and was pretty darn amusing.  (There's a link to it over in the stat topic.)  An interesting speedrun to me must have *possibility of failure*, ideally due to relatable things from a normal playthrough of the game - e.g. failing to dodge enemies, screwing up boss fights, and so on.  It also helps if the effort goes into weird-but-powerful strategies rather than glitches.  That's basically how the L2 speedrun rolls - it's kinda cool to see the results of just knowing boss AI really well, and also to watch the party get horribly slaughtered as they fail to run twice in a row after getting caught on the last monster in the dungeon.  See, Jean's Blue Dragon Karate uses the power of the heart and her friends, unlike Shadow Dragon Karate which is just about hurting people at short range, so Jean uses her friends as an invincible corpse wall in the tournament to protect her.  Plot / Gameplay integration!

The media is all ZOMG TERRARISM AUSTRALIS.  There was a lot of paranoia and misinformation at first (TWO GUNMEN!  UNAFFILIATED GUNMEN!  BOMBS!  SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE IN UNRELATED BUILDING!).  The company I work for has offices near where it went down, they handled it fine.  Stay in doors and keep working like good corporate drones.  When things were under control they were allowed to exit via doors opposite side of the block.

Day after, it is getting spun in some parts of media as ZOMG ISIS even though the (Singular) guy was under an unaffiliated banner and there is a lot of calling it out in the more publicly accountable media.

There is also "This is our 9/11" style bullshit which is crazy insensitive and stupid.  The actual event fits really close to our last big shooting event which was like 20 years ago.  Single isolated individual lashing out against society.  There is a difference between Martin Bryant and this guy though (Bryant was much quieter and not making demands), but they are both isolated single person incidents at this point.

I suspect the drive is similar to that of your normal shooting in places where they are more common.  There is some cultural differences that isolate it, but also probably a volume of people and availability of opportunity for the situation.

The bogan contingent is of course talking about getting revenge.  This is terrible.

So to answer your question.  Badly.  A little better than I would expect, but still badly.

Can't say I'm surprised, sadly.

Saying it's Australia's 9/11 makes me sad. Mostly it's because, since this event doesn't nearly represent the shock and loss of life 9/11 was in the US, the interest in jumping immediately to "world crisis" level makes it seem like Australia's desperate to get in on the terrorism porn sweeping the world. It seems strange to think there are people who wish something terrible would happen to them so they can feel part of the world stage.

Of course, I'm projecting a lot onto them, but I recognize that impulse.

I hate how much lone gunmen affect the sense of security people feel about their safety. Things like the movie theater shooting in Aurora, CO (at the Batman movie), this event in Sydney, the shootings at schools... they're the black swans, things so striking in their inability to fit into the greater picture that they take on much greater significance and size than they truly represent. It's hard for humans not to hone in on the abnormal, but the lengths to which the media goes to whip it up, governments go to appease the unease, the public succumbs to self-feeding loops of fear...

Sucks, mang.

Sorry, I'm American, I couldn't help making it all about me.

I hope it calms down quickly.

Hey no worries, the type of people that are fetishising it into "our 9/11" are really the types to angle for political leverage, it is definitely not a common sentiment.

The part that bothers me about it is how massively insensitive it is to the actual scale of 9/11, the London bombing and the Spanish ones as well.

I have hopes that it gets handled with some degree of aplomb socially, the #ridewithme thing while seeming to have morphed into slacktivism like it was originally called out not to, but there is a definite voice from that more socially progressive part of Australia there actually being head for a change.

To turn it around on to personal war paths, I notice you specifically don't mention workplace shootings there.  I want to remind you that those happen in the US with far more frequency and have been happening for much longer than school shootings and are powerful enough that the term Going Postal is fairly well recognisable internationally for something that is still thankfully mostly isolated to being an American cultural phenomenon.

As for what happens in the aftermath, last time this happened was when our restrictive gun laws were put into place which while incredibly reactionary I do think has panned out for the best in the long run.  We also had a far more socially progressive Prime Minister at the time (one of the nice things you will hear me say about John Howard) so we will see how things shake down.  I don't think the current government is the best one to see respond to this, but we managed to come out of the early days of planes being shot down in the Ukraine with going to war so hey maybe this will go better than expected as well.

As far as I know, most kinds of non-combat shootings in the first world happen in the US. Hooray gun rights. Workplace shootings happen with enough frequency that they end up being line items in a greater news day. The exception was the Fort Mason shooting, which got attention because it involved the military. More specifically, it involved the US Military refusing to pay out medical costs to the victims because it was classed as "workplace violence" and not "terrorism" even though by every definition of the term it was "workplace violence." That, alongside the accused being incarcerated and, as our jail system does, providing him with every benefit at a cost to the state... but that gets into the healthcare nonsense.

I do think the global experience, grim as it is, dealing with these kinds of violence will help stabilise the official reaction to what happened in Sydney. IIRC (which is possibly not true - America didn't cover those as much, for obvious jingoist reasons), London and Madrid handled their tragedies better than we did.

The issue is that the run should be of a certain quality. Part of my concern is that Chessjerk is just much more knowledgeable than me at FFT. I would feel less pressured if my teammate was someone else who knew FFT well but didn't have like a super crazy time to completely overshadow. Put another way,  if this was just FFT talk between other knowledgeable players like mc/NEB/Laggy, I wouldn't feel all that intimidated. But if I had elmagus or Claude as my partner, I would feel similar. I'm sure they don't, but its the personal aspect.

Just a correction. If you got to a marathon, and are running a game, they expect you to run that game. Like if I showed up and said, "Nah, I'm gonna do Wild ARMS XF" that's not gonna fly >_>. For good reason! I'll submit it the games to other events, but I mean given their length and popularity, I'm kinda putting high hopes on  things to happen. You are correct that a marathon run is typically expected to be slower though. Its basically a demo show and not a "reset until PB scenario".

To put a long story short, people weren't happy with Poxnor's management style (not getting confirmation on dates/hotels and stuff until like 2 weeks before the event) and he was being very immature on handling the criticism that he literally rage quit. Dead serious (like he was going around unfriending people on Facebook supposedly). So he eventually said that he was resigning due to disagreements. Puwexil took over and started this new one, which has more charity focus on and less showcase focus. Which explains partially why Wild ARMS 3 doesn't get in but Wild ARMS 1 will.

Hey now.  If you're serious about a good time (which I'd argue you shouldn't be, backup strats are interesting & amusing), just have a handy backup save that has good generics & high Chemist JP post-Gariland.

I do want to get a good time, but I'm not going to segment it out. I'll be satisfied with a 4:29:XX. But even now it looks like barely possible. So no, what you're suggesting unfortunately won't work.

just have a save handy at that point post-drop in case the game refuses to be cooperative.

I'll do that when I learn VP2. The game where you literally have a 25% chance of getting out of the first 4 screens, 6 minutes into the game. The best.

Grefter: Out of curiosity, what's the crime rate like in Aussie land? I was watching John Oliver talk about gun control laws and he mentioned that you guys have strict gun control and basically mass shootings and gun related deaths have plummeted. This in a way makes sense. My dad has always mentioned that most criminals are opportunist and are lazy as well. If it forces them to jump through multiple hoops to rob a house for example, they will typically look for other prey. I'm sure gun laws being stricter in Aussie land probably played on that as well, so while yes, criminals won't obey laws, they will sure look for other ways to accomplish their goals easier. And without guns, maybe that's just too prohibitive. He doesn't mention anything about other crimes though, so since it was brought up, I thought I would ask.

In other news, just did a 90 minute grind session on Boomerang to work out further kinks and test the No-Shining-Star strat. It works pretty well..probably better THAN the Shining Star strat, which is amusing. Waiting to do in an actual attempt and get wrecked once I get there though.

About normal for a first world country I think?  It is just less gun violence.

I did enjoy, in a schadenfreude kind of way, seeing the headline news on the Tube, stories like "Man stabs wife" instead of "Double murder suicide - the father used unregistered firearms."

I got a great job far away.

I've never actually been to that city and I don't know anyone living there. I'm starting work in 15 days or so. Allright.
At least a train ride to Paris only takes one hour from there.

I make my comment about knife violence vs. gun violence and then, today, I see a story about a family with 8 kids dead in Cairns after a stabbing.

It's kind of like joking about violence isn't funny. Way to be a buzzkill, universe.

Yeah that shit is fucked up man, but it is also the reality of the situation.  I wouldn't take it to heart or impact your ability to make jokes.  Humor is one of th meant ways to deal with it.

I mean it isn't like you also didn't say it a few days after we had deaths by gun violence as well and look the ratios, knife violence was way more successful.

I accidentally ended up watching a video of a stabbing death. That looks like a horrifying way to die.

If you're wondering how one accidentally watches a snuff video, I was not given context and the camera was far away. It wasn't until the end of the video where I realized the jabs the guy was doing were actually stabs.

'tis the season...

So, after we just confirmed that DLCon is now the best dates for me to attend...my car dies completely.  Just dropped money on it.  I suppose the 12k$ I spent back in 2005 for the car was well-worth it, but it couldn't wait 6 more months to die?

Yeah, I am probably out of DL Con just from a money standpoint (wedding in May, so all those expenses are building up now).  Motherfucker...

On a positive note, I like the new car a lot, and it's significantly safer/fuel efficient/longer-lasting, but I do still miss my old Taurus :(

I went out to the play The Glass Menagerie last night. Spoilers ahead! I didn't really know what to expect when I went in, didn't read up about it, it was just this spontaneous thing, but I was a little taken aback at how close to home that the whole thing hit. The story was about a family of two young adults who are living with their obsessive, controlling mother in the 1930's. The daughter is physically handicapped and possibly a bit mentally as well and the son works at the factory to help make a living but goes out and drinks in the evening. The mother is frustrated with the slow progress of her kids, but seems to do way more to impede their progress than actually help them by nagging them. You can see where she’s coming from, she doesn't want to see her kids end up with dead end jobs and/or homeless, but she has specific ideas about what she wants from them and she tells them. Repeatedly.

I laughed at its dark humor as I recalled my past of living with my grandmother who constantly berated me and nitpicked over minor things, and thought of my brother who became a drunk partially because of this abuse. I remembered the all-too-familiar feeling of anger in my heart over an ungrateful family member who you go out of your way to help... who chides you for your spending habits rather than being grateful for the money given to support the family (in my brother's case, he is chided for not being a good enough caretaker of my grandmother despite being the only person who was willing to actually be a caretaker). The ever present rattling of the mother's voice in the play after a while grates at you like sandpaper and I remembered how constant bitching and complaints and criticisms are just things a person has to eventually let roll out of their mind or they will descend into madness.

And then I saw the last scene about the male main character abandons his family, and I felt like I was punched in the stomach. I think there’s a lot of moral ambiguity over whether it was right for him to abandon his sister, but I sympathize with him a lot because it felt like a family situation that was never going to get better. Still… reading up on Tennessee Williams’ backstory, and how this was supposed to be semi-autobiographical, and after he ran away from home his sister was given a botched lobotomy(!). That’s a hell of a thing to have to live with.

Woohoo! Winter vacation in Japan! It's cold.

Decided to hop an expensive bullet train to go see Zenny in southern countryside Japan. Spoiler: it wasn't as much Alabama as it was regular suburban seaside town. Kinda disappointed, but at least I didn't have to "rough it", I guess?

The first night was spent in the largest city on this island, Fukuoka, and was a respectable night of debauchery as could be expected from the combination of the DL's biggest drunkard and its biggest manwhore, plus a Tagalong named Charlotte, who can only be described as the best of both of those metrics.

The following days were spent on being hungover and playing RPGs, as you might expect from a DL meetup! Fenrir's recent talk of LISA had us both intrigued, so we literally marathoned the game to completion, stopping only to venture out to the various restaurants in Zennytown. (Where I was served raw chicken heart while Zenny pounded beers in front of his students.) LISA itself was a fascinating, uncomfortable, but kinda hilarious experience. Especially with color commentary from Zenny.

So, overall a great vacation: debauchery, video games, and good company! Also, Zenny gave me a disease. Dammit, Zenny!

THIS.

Also, found out that dad has the flu this morning. If I get sick when I have to drive 200 miles tomorrow and work a eight hour shift after, I'm gonna be unhappy.

I use IRC999

I don't really like it much, but it is functional.  You have seen about how well it works for me when I am connected on my phone.  I think Ciatos uses it for her tablet with more success though?

I'm not actually sure it was ever a good  idea to begin with. But that goes without saying for a lot of games I run/decisions I make in general.

I do appreciate your concerns though. Probably going to stick with it - it's not like I haven't been frustrated with other games before. I originally didn't want to post a lot about it because I was afraid it was just going to seem like bitching and moaning.
