Does this mean that Bard has been talking to Djinn about chick flicks because it is yet another person Bard has mistaken for a girl?  Time will tell.

Oh heavens, Djinn's suspect taste in men should be a dead giveaway.

Meh... >.>;; Niu is cute, putting personality flaws and anti-social tendencies aside...

For the record, Bard, Not A Girl, despite the avatar and apparently-girly typing style. Sources say that I communicate this fact better in person.

My anime-related (read: on-topic) news:

I'm considering going to a theatre to watch the latest Evangelion movie while it's still on the big screen. I don't think my Japanese is good enough to follow it, but it IS a somewhat important moment for anime as a whole and it'd be cool to say 'I was there'.

Oh yeah Sopko anime watching.

Here and There, Now and Then - This was great, not really depressing though (Worse stories from Africa and all that), still a lot of fun, crazy dudes and hilarious douches all round and fantastically optimistic main in the face of all logic.  Just a really human story.

...I'm gonna try to see Eva Rebuild 2.0 in the theaters over here. Like, really try, despite not being a huge Eva fan.

So, poking around mecha boards on 4chan, and someone was streaming assorted episodes of Code Geass R2 in honor of 'Geass Sundays' when everyone would flock to the latest fansub releases to see what absurdity would happen next. Fansubbed. So, episode 12 - the love hat - episode, cue a half dozen replays of that random purple haired girl saying "Nani, my hunny?" to Lelouch because the delivery on it is so... something. Also prominent R2 meme.

Of course, it was a straight-from-desktop stream so there were some... sound effects played during. The worst though? Random Boku no Pico clips with CG dialogue still in the background, playing Still Alive for the climax of the last episode, and then showing the ending of Grave of the Fireflies.

Then the last episode of Princess Tutu for no damned good reason, making me want to watch it because it was so bizarre and pretty.

Oh, and hands up if you'd recognize Gaogaigar's Final Fusion on sight. I figure some of /m/'s users were sad when people didn't, but really, you have to be a mecha fan to know it.

Quoting because I am lazy. Show is good stuff. Of course, I seem to be less bothered by "depressing" material than most people--as long as there's a point to it. And there is, in this case.

No, he's not overrating Kodocha.

And among other things awesome about N&T, H&T, King Hamdo is barr none the most batshit insane character in anime. Not to mention one of the other characters is a HUGE douche.

Hamdo isn't batshit insane at all.  Normal insane, not batshit insane.

He spends his first scene kicking around a dead cat, and it really only goes downhill from there. If he doesn't qualify as "batshit," no one does.

Hamdo is like a bees dick short of the Joker at his craziest.  One of the better and more disturbingly accurate representations for a sociopath in Anime I have seen.

El Hazard - Anime all about Lesbians, trannies and lesbian trannies.  This was a lot of fun in similar ways that Lodoss Wars was last time, but I guess add a dash of Slayers style in there in all honesty.  It definitely does have that post 80's self awareness going on, but it wears its silly high fantasy proudly.  Good times.  Sounds like everything else that came from it was bleh underwhelming but such is life.

In all seriousness, yeah it is a good show, totally worth your time El Cid.  It is essentially the Travel to another World and get Magic Powers!!! anime and then it goes about inverting as many expectations of that genre as you would expect, most of the times for some kind of laugh.  It works pretty well.

Eh Paprika for me, but part of the beauty of Kon's work is how varied and unique it all is, so that is kind of how he works.

G Gundam- Okay, so I picked up a used set marked Season 2.  How it actually works is, there's 12 discs making up the full series.  I actually have discs 6, 7, and 9-12.  This is probably advantageous overall, giving me the end of the first season and skipping four random opponents.  Well, three random opponents and Allenby.

Biggest criticism is that the series clearly didn't really know what to do with the Shuffle Alliance.  They have these brilliant fight sequences with Domon, but when it comes to the whole Devil Gundam fights they're nominally assembled to deal with, they have to take on the Four Kings in two on one battles, spend ten minutes getting mercilessly pounded, then FINALLY remember they have moves besides "get pounded on" and win in a single blow.  I mean, winning in one blow isn't outside the norm in this series, but they didn't even make the pounding interesting.  It's me sitting there thinking "jesus guys you have better attacks than this, put down the damned Idiot Ball"

All that said, in other respects the endgame plot works pretty well.  A little too much "spend 10 minutes losing before using good attacks/inventing new attack" but they're interesting to watch, and plenty of loud roars telling them to sieze happiness.  Twists in the plot are pretty coherent.
Generally just kinda a 7/10 series I guess.

Favorite Satoshi Kon movie?  Let me throw my hat in the ring for Perfect Blue.

they have to take on the Four Kings in two on one battles, spend ten minutes getting mercilessly pounded, then FINALLY remember they have moves besides "get pounded on" and win in a single blow.

Oh come now.  everyone knows awesome moves only work at the end of a fight.  If you start a fight with a finisher, you'll have to miraculously power up to a new plane of existence before you win, and that's just too much of a hassle.

It's a pretty common trope with hero-type super robots, for all that Mazinger didn't really follow it and was... kind of the first of them. Also normal for tokusatsu i.e. Kamen Rider, Super Sentai/Power Rangers. G Gundam is very much more this genre despite still being pretty Gundam.

As for Satoshi Kon... haven't seen Millenium Actress or all of Perfect Blue (both of which I should... probably buy at some point), but I did really like Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers. Tokyo Godfathers was very concrete for Kon, but a very charming story with fun characters.

Well, there's a subtle distinction between "struggling in a fight and not breaking out super attacks right away to win" and "just sitting there losing until, suddenly, you whip out the super attack and win".  Even within G Gundam itself, the fights between the Shuffle Alliance members right before this have the tide of battle change a few times, trying to throw each other off balance and looking for openings to attack before the ending.

Basically my complaint is more "they just spent four episodes having really good battles, then another with Speigal, then they have eight more episodes in the series and only one fight is any good (Master vs Domon, obviously)" than "this show has too much trope".

Point. The individual fights with Domon before then were all pretty awesome. Maybe they were saving some budget for the last episode...
