Apparently we're suggesting anime now, so:

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - if you like the first Gunbuster, there's a good chance you'll like this
Read or Die OVA - short and stylish. I'm not sure I know anyone who likes anime but doesn't like this.
Vision of Escaflowne
Azumanga Daioh
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Godannar - Watched the first season, into the second. Good show, with surprisingly good characters for something so over-the-top fanservicey. The overriding theme is family (and boobs) and it's done pretty darn well. That said, if they don't stop with the goddamned recaps I am going to break some heads.

I'll add Black Lagoon to that for now.

Definitely seconding this (and ignoring Niu's antihype since, well, some of us just don't get into manga). Black Lagoon's a lot of fun.

TMS is offering the six episodes of Sherlock Hound that Hayao Miyazaki directed on YouTube. Watch them.

Dominion: Tank Police.  Weird.  One of Masamune Shirow's big hits before Ghost in the Shell.  Best way I could describe it would be to say it's a violent Patlabor parody that veers completely unexpectedly into proto-GitS SF philosophy.  Also, twin catgirl stripper/gangsters.  Ah, the 80s.  Pretty interesting to see Shirow's stuff rendered in a pretty close approximation of his style, as opposed to the more realistic GitS (and Black Magic, not that anyone cares about that).

Beck - Okay a bit over halfway through and so far someone in the show has said the exact same thing I did.  There is some serious bits of RATM influence in a few of the songs.  There is lots of stuff from all over the place though (Lots of early 90's grunge/alt rock really).  More music listened to and I have liked most of it, some of it grows on you a bit, but some of it is good straight out of the bat.  The credit song you have heard often enough in the credits to really get into it when it actually shows up coming from Dying Breed in show, pretty nice trick (and it is a nice song).

Dying Breed give off some vague Stone Temple Pilots vibes (others as well, but yeah).  Sometimes the Slice of Life stuff grates when I want some music, but it is interesting enough when it isn't dwelling on it for an entire episode without advancing the band plot.

Edit - Actually I am kind of confused about the age of some of the Characters.  Koyuuki hits high school and ... Chiiba is there, what the shit?  I thought this was a pair of fifteen year olds playing in a band with 3 adults.  Now I have no idea how old Ryuusuke and Taira are supposed to be.

Edit 2 - HAHAHA KOYUUKI PLAYING OPENING BARS TO BOMBTRACK FUCK YES.

Edit 3 - Though seriously, could you just like have ONE plot line where the main character is hitting on multiple chicks at once instead of it repeating itself again and again.

Pictures at an Exhibition - Man, that Tezuka guy had a lot on his mind.  Death and...diminishment, I suppose, seem to loom over this, and not just death but sudden, unexpected death.  It gives me a vibe like the 1969 Romeo and Juliet, where Mercutio and Tybalt are just having an innocent, good time with their fight, just putting on a show like most fights between young men turn out to be, until tragedy steps in.

Also, it's really cool to see old stuff like this (it's from the '60s) because the director sees things from a 2-dimensional lines-on-paper perspective that you don't see a lot of these days (though there's a lot of it in classic US cartoons).  The plastic surgeon, for instance, fixes up a woman with a big butt and a flat chest by pounding her curves with a hammer until they reposition themselves appropriately.

Beck - Finished it (watched more of it today than I have the other 3 days I have sat to watch it combined ....).  Yeah good music.  Slice of Life is Slice?  I dunno how that meme applies.   Was worth the time and money to watch it.  Pretty much stuff I said in the first impressions applies the whole way through.  Ending is good for having high concentration of music though.

Finished Godannar. The second season had some good episodes, but the sheer volume of padding (one recap episode, one that resolves the throwaway twist from the first-season finale the way it was obviously going to go, and four episodes focusing on minor characters with little plot relevance) bogs it down too much. Still a very good series overall. It's surprisingly serious and character-centric for the way it looks, too; I strongly suspect that the character designs were completely divorced from the scriptwriting.

Ah, Kimura. Your character designs are quite iconic.

See: Females in Code Geass, Gaogaigar, Gun X Sword.

Now have watched a few episodes of Nanoha StrikerS. Stuff's about to happen, though I'm already sad about the new characters getting largely sidelined later on, along with the lack of Yuuno (I've heard as much at least). Ah well, here's hoping Magical Wars or whatever they're calling the next installation gives us more Subaru/Teana and Magical Librarian Ferret-boy Yuuno.

One final note: Is Kurohime any good?

Anna looked really similar to Mikoto and Hana, so I can't say I'm surprised that Godannar and Gaogaigar have the same character designer.

The breast sizes crossed the line into unintentional comedy zone about five times over, though. Outfits too, going by that picture.

The breast sizes crossed the line into unintentional very much intentional comedy zone about five times over, though. Outfits too, going by that picture.

Fixed. Godannar is funny. I'm especially fond of the running joke with Koji, who only seems to show up once every few episodes and gets his entire dramatic plot (which would span 5 episodes in your normal Gundam drama) squeezed into about 5 seconds.

(After Kouji's mech crashes and explodes, Goh shows up to the scene to help fight off monsters)
Goh: "Where's Koji!?"
Shizuru: *pained* "He's... dead!"
Koji: "I'm not dead! Stop saying that!"

Somewhat slapstick, but considering I've seen other mech shows 'kill off' pilots only to have them miraculously survive after the cast spent 4-5 episodes angsting over their deaths... Well, I appreciated the 5-second parody.

Anyway, good dub. More fun than the original Japanese version for a change.

EDIT: On the subject of the original Japanese version and costume ridiculousness. There's a scene with the well-endowed commander where she basically just moves one of her arms too quickly and the amount of jiggle that results is enough to make the buttons fly off her blouse (revealing only a tiny bit more cleavage, oddly enough). It seems gratuitous, but then one of the buttons hits the non-existant camera, and it's just over-the-top enough that it can't be anything but parody.

I love the last one, where Shizuru just assumes he's dead, and skips straight to saying that she won't let his death be in vain.

Finished Tsubasa Chronicles Season 1.  The anime was really disappointing because I'm a big fan of the manga.  The plodding pace and the fact that Bee Train managed to fit in some filler episodes left a bad taste in my mouth.  At least the dub is good.  I'm going to wait a while before I start Season 2.

For now, I'm watching the Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA.
