Classic Minmay was generally fine all the way through. She was young, immature, a doormat and also selfish when it came to Hikaru, but still generally likable since it was understandable where it all came from. Since I haven't seen DYRL, I was confused though since I didn't see where the hate came from.

I honestly don't remember how movie Minmay was different from TV Minmay because I was too busy going "oooooooh, shiiiiiiny."

C:
Interesting so far. I dub it the best anime of this season. I'll change my mind later, maybe. So far the story's becoming interesting: it's not really to the point that I'm psyched to see what happens next like I was with Code Geass (lol), but I'm also not watching it "just to fill the time". So far so good. The thematics are really heavy and it definitely feels like it wants to convey a message beyond just entertaining, and that alone puts it way ahead of other anime whose sole purpose is to provide fanservice with a little slice of some semblance of story, usually "good prevails over evil, even if good is very stupid".

Dogdays:
Speaking of! Still fanservice-y, except this time you get Shinku-fanservice. Why, Japan, why have I not dropped this terrible show? What keeps bringing me back to you? The fact that your original setting was fresh and exciting, a fantasy world with athletics at its core and battles like in MMORPGs? Well, at least now we get FORESHADOWING that the status quo will be broken and that SPOILERS, but yeah, I'm still not sure why I watch this beyond some sadomasochistic urge to watch something when I am watching anime anyway.

Deadman Wonderland- Nice, very nice. They are cutting what needs to be cut and keep the pacing stable. If this continues, I'll have to take my claim that this show will suck thanks to only having 12 episodes.

Cutting off Asami kinda stings, but I can see it as necessary, they really don't have space left for her.

They'll probably spend four more episodes on the carnival stuff, and the remaining 4 for Undertaker. Just enough room to squeeze everything in, and it might just work out!!

The only complain I have is.... why Paku and Sawashiro!? Especially Sawahsiro!! Why, why does she has to voice Toto!? Couldn't they get Suzumura or Nojima to do it!? Hell, I'll even be satisfied with Okamoto!! Why do they have to find that women who can barely sound like a guy!!! UGHHHHHHHH!!!!!

....BTW, is it just me or the One Reason sounds like a certain D.Gray Men OP?

Macross Frontier - Finished

Well, I had been expecting them to take the condition to its ultimate conclusion and resolve the triangle via cop-out. I hadn't expected them to go for a more copped-out cop-out.

Sheryl ended up becoming a more likable character but it doesn't excuse early!Sheryl. Seems like there is a shard of her backstory missing which is kind of annoying.

I don't really understand what Birler was after.

Recently got back into watching anime.  Started off by remembering that I had gotten DaiGuard way back when and watching that, which was pretty enjoyable.  The larger plot wasn't very good, but given that the story was pretty much about the characters and the corporation anyways, that's forgivable.  And it's always fun to watch a Real Robot show that looks like it should be a Super Robot show.

Then I watched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Normally, Super Robot Wars does not stretch the limits of my disbelief.  But I have a very hard time imagining a universe that contains the Spiral Warriors, where anything works so long as it's awesome enough, and the Dai-Guard verse, where everything runs on duct tape and a prayer, and hot-bloodedness generally leads to paperwork and lawsuits.

Currently working on classic Macross.

Uh... I started watching One Piece because it's a -thing- here in Japan and I'd only ever read the first volume of the manga before and I wanted to be able to hold a conversation about it with my students.

The pacing is... something.

25 episodes in and I still haven't caught up to the END OF THE FIRST VOLUME OF THE MANGA.

It's generally nice to look at and the tropes are ones that I enjoy, but GOD DAMN GET TO THE POINT.

Yes, I know it's 500-episode series so far, but I was kind of expecting 500 episodes of stuff happening. Silly of me, probably.

It's a shame, because the cast really has delightful chemistry whenever anything's actually going on.

Also, One Piece is at its best when either nothing is going on or something really important is going on.  It's those times when stuff is sorta going on that drag.

Oh, but take heart!  The beginning drags worse than the rest of the show because the cast hasn't sufficiently assembled and there is a marked lack of villainous villains.  The show coheres considerably when you hit the Arlong Park storyline.

If you know the general premise and main cast just from being part of anime fandom, is there any reason not to just start with Arlong Park?

It works better with the setup.  I say just read the intervening chapters instead of watching them.

I wanted to watch a more traditional Magical Girl show after Madoka, so I gave Heartcatch Precure a shot. It's like Sailor Moon but with more enjoyable characters and battles. Indeed the action at times was like something out of a good Shounen fighting show, with the four girls fighting as a team by attacking from multiple directions while covering for each other. Still resorts to stock 'super attack' for finishing stuff off, which is disappointing because that is less fun than watching a good old fashioned physical beatdown.

Bonus points for there being a pretty clear power difference between the girls (Moonlight >>> Sunshine > Erica > Tsubomi) and the girls just shrugging it off and kicking ass together as a team regardless. More fighting shows should copy this.

The ending of the series was surprisingly awesome when it came down to it. Rather enjoyed the whole thing to be honest. This makes me feel very girly so I am going to watch Gurren Laggan a few times to fix that.

Ouran High School Host Club - Finished

Generally hilarious.

The aesthetic can be a little grating at times, and the background episodes for the twins and Kyoya feel out of place. The latter at least has a leadin in the present day despite never leading out and going anywhere with the leadin, but the former is just a whole episode of background with no connection to the present day out of nowhere. No major problems, though. Happy day.

Oh right, the Wonderland episode wasn't that great either.

Those Obnoxious Aliens - Through to episode 30

Somewhat humourous when it isn't being all rapey. What have I gotten myself into.

I guess I haven't seen any Takahashi before but I had somewhere gotten the impression that she was a creator of wholesome things.

YAY! The Urusei Yatsura anime is very unlike the others. It's very surreal at times, due to Mamoru Oshii directing the first half of the show. It really, really shows, and it is awesome. When you get a chance, watch the second movie Beautiful Dreamer.

The show is actually the origin of most harem tropes, as well as all of Takahashi's character archetypes for her later series. It's a shame that all harem mains aren't as awesome as Ataru, right? The whole cast is pretty well awesome for different reasons.

I watched Madoka, because it's apparently the new TTGL of anime or something.

It was pretty good, but not as awesome as I expected.  Way too much trolling. "Yo I heard you like Mahou Shoujo. Well, FUCK YOU."   Trolling is only funny when done in a FABULOUS way like Code Geass. The bizarre art style of witches, soundtrack, and fight scenes were well done, but overshadowed by all the crying (there's no crying in pre-pubescent girl shows...oh wait), lesbian overtones and QB being more pro than Protori. God, there needs to be a dub of this show. Dave Whittenburg as QB would have made it 10x more awesome.

C - I see the effect of C gets bounced back to Japan by US. I recalled what US has been doing with the dollars and worldly currency. I laughed. I further recalled the economic state between US and Japan, I laughed harder.

One Piece - still slowly watching this. Around episode 65? They just got to the Grand Line (finally! That crappy Dragon filler arc was making me physically ill). I'm not quite sure how I feel about the whole series so far. It definitely seems like it's got a good setup, but the actual adventures plod along so slowly that it's hard to stay interested in it.

Nami and Sanji seem to be really solidly-developed characters, whereas Zoro and Luffy kinda piss me off. Usopp, at least, is consistently fun to watch, though somewhat grating. Guest characters are generally forgettable outside of their design. I generally like the aesthetic, despite its weirdness and the fact that there's clearly a lot of influence from Toriyama. It's kind of like what I imagine Toriyama always WISHED his art looked like - surreal and stylized, but actually unique from character to character.

The music is pretty terrible though. For such an iconic series, I was kind of hoping to actually like some of the theme songs to make good karaoke fodder, but so far none of them are any fun...

Despite that, I -really- liked Nami and Sanji's arcs, and now that they're exploring the Grand Line, it seems to be picking up again, so I'm going to stick with it, though if anyone can warn me about anymore of the filler arcs, that'd be great. Apis and the Millenium Dragons arc almost killed me. Die in a Fire, Apis.

Valkyria Chronicles anime: Same as the PS3 game, only now Alicia is a screeching harpy tsundere. On the plus side, the generics get more screen time! I just wish Vyse was one of the main ones ;_;  Pretty pretty art~

Currently watching Durarara!!

I am not sure why I put off watching this for long considering how much I loved Baccano!

Not really much else to say other then it is amazing and I love how Ryohgo Narita manages to make these stories of seemingly unrelated characters all mesh into one Rube Goldberg machineesque thing.  It is also apparently going to start airing on adult swim in 2 days which means I may try shoving this down the throats of some friends who are not familiar with anime.

The next arc is really long so you don't have much to fear about filler for a while.
* NotMiki checks

yup, next filler arc starts...episode 131 (and holy shit lasts until episode 143)

Gundam Unicorn - V1

Not particularly happy about how attached Banagher gets to Audrey when he barely knows her.

Unicorn's glowlines & beam orbit have made me wonder whether Stargazer was based off it.

Darker Than Black - finished

Generally engrossing and I don't have any real complaints, aside from that a random special episode was tacked on after the ending as episode 26. But this is presumably the fault of the distributer rather than the show, and it isn't as annoying as it was when it was done in Kurokami since DtB didn't go for TouchingEnding.

Those Obnoxious Aliens - through episode 50

Happily the amount of sexual assault humour has decreased and the amount of funny humour has increased. Good, good.

I'm not sure that I've seen any harem anime? Closest would be Nadesico, Tylor, or Ouran...? None of their mains would be really typical of the genre, I would expect.
