Regardless, I just level-capped Black Mage and got his first Record Materia. I should look into beating Hein's dungeon on Elite - the level scaling on FF3 dungeons is more lax and Hein himself was really meant to be fought with mostly mages. Runic or Sentinel's Grimoire should largely shut him down, and I -do- follow a Runic Celes.

I am a god damn 78 max stamina peasant. There's too little time to do the regular dungeons. I either have to do the current event, or get orbs, or get exp, or get materials, or whatever. There is always something else.

Oh, Baku only does ST 2HKO damage but remember that it's just fucking Baku we're talking about. He came close to destroying my team because I was nearly out of resources against him during the boss rush. (Not one healing spell left, for one)

I've tried Drain Sword and it looks to be the equivalent of Drain. Fira sword does 3300 damage to a random enemy in the hardest event dungeon, Drain sword does 3100. It restores about 800 HPs. The healing's not good, but throw a menuet + defense debuff and it becomes pretty good.
I think I prefer going with Fira/Blizzara strike on an average level but it's pretty nice.

I went with Protectga instead of Quake, I like it.

Okay, pulling from the multiplier guide, I was wrong: Drain Sword and Drain are actually a bit -weaker- than L3s. 3x multiplier on Drain vs. 3.26x on -gas, 1.7x vs. 1.8x on -ra Spellblades. Looking at the mults, also explains why magic starts soaring later on: as of now, the highest mult you get on physicals, with 5-rarity skills, is 2.8. Magic abilities outpace that at -rarity level 3-. Pound doesn't seem to pull past that either, and it's rarity 4.

EDIT: Granted, what you actually use either type for just varies. The mult thing is explained essentially because basic physicals always run off ATK, so you have a steady source of offense for trash mobs on your physicallers (if mage physicals ran off MAG instead... sigh). Against bosses, the physical skills serve utility purposes rather than raw damage. In the early game, this doesn't shape up quite that way because L1 and L2 magic is trashy and physical skills frontload their offense, but at this power level that's just how it goes. The gap is likely to widen as rarity-3 craft items become more of a commodity rather than a premium (Heroic daily dungeons drop those like candy). At some point, I imagine the ideal party shifts from three fighters+one mage+one healer to at least two mages+two fighters+a healer, because honing L3s becomes progressively easier and they actually last you even against boss rush stats, while physicals get offensively outdated even with 5-rarity material, which come at a serious premium.

If physical damage = 10 x mult and magical damage = 100000 x mult, then you can't compare mults directly. Right?
My support dude Wakka does more damage with a 1* mult physical attack, than Damage God Vivi does with a 1* mult magical attack

EDIT: Checking on Reddit, the elite bosses all have HUEG HP, but a crapload of status vulnerabilities. Granaldo can be slept. Archaeosaur is vulnerable to pretty much everything sans ID. Oilboyles can be slept and silenced. Norg is vulnerable to INSTANT DEATH once the pod opens. Uh yeah, there are a lot of ways to cheese the fights and I even crafted Death for this.

Physical: [Atk^1.3]*Atk^(0.5)/Def^(0.5)*Mult, part in brackets maxes out at 346
Magical: [Mag^1.15]*Mag^(0.5)/Res^(0.5)*Mult, part in brackets maxes out at 742

Offensive White magic use Mind instead of Magic, otherwise same formula.

The obvious takeaway is that physical damage scales higher with attack than magic damage with magic until you hit 346.

Oh, Snow's right about magic scaling better with higher level abilities though. 4* -ga strikes are 1.4x as strong as 2* basic strikes, while 4* -ja spells are more than triple the power of 2* -ra spells.

Tangentially, the need to mash a skip button and hope for the right character's turn to come up when several people have full bars is one of my least favorite aspects of FF ATB. I still don't understand why the programmers can't copy Chrono Trigger's setup where you can just press left or right to pick a PC.

I don't know if I am right or not but I know at speed 5 without autobattling it felt like it was falling into the trap that is the kludge of FF9 combat where you can use constantly full ATB bars and attacks and stuff to queue things more effectively during animations (since enemy ATB won't refresh until their attacks are done and your gauges still fill).

Fuck FF9 ATB though. This at least animates !1billion^1.98*Y/666 where Y is faster than FF9.

Reducing battle speed to 1 helps, but I ended up with four PCs with full bars at one point today and it still took needlessly long to switch over to Cloud. Record Keeper having five PCs in the party doesn't help, but it's a problem with the real FF games that use ATB as well. Chrono Trigger handling this perfectly back in 1995 just makes in inexcusible that Square never bothered to backport the system to FF proper. If defend/row commands are the problem they could just be moved to the bottom of the menu, UI design for JRPGs isn't exactly rocket science.

Incidentally I got Carbuncle today for the price of 1 mythril; I ran out of gas near the end of the Black Waltz/Sealion fight and took a few too many tsunamis to handle the last fight. I probably could've S/L'd and won cleanly with better luck but screw that, I have plenty of mythrils left in stock.

VP2 is on hold because I'm Batman

Batman is really attached to his car. Sometimes he's all like, I can't move on to the next plot point until I figure out how to get my car there. And even Riddler's like I really really like driving and thinking about driving when I'm not driving. Huge shock, I'm not a great fan of driving segments, I just want to fly all over the city looking for tchotchkes. It's seriously GTA/SR driving though, you can just run over anyone and they go off flying covered with electricity but it's okay because the electricity cushioned the impact? They're all criminals anyway so presumably no one cares.

This is Cid complaining about everything that's different before he gets on with enjoying the game anyway. Also wow I knew they were going to work him in again somehow but I guess maybe it's better they didn't make me wait at all and annoy me more with it being ze big plot twist later?

Next time I am probably going to switch to the Adam West suit and just stay there the whole game because Arkham Knight really wants me to get rid of bombs.

Out of curiosity, how quickly does that Attack hit 90 normally (since that's when it seems like it will hit 346 in brackets)? And yeah, Magic ends up mattering until you hit 310 approximately the the stat (so I guess 255 likely is not the cap here). That's...odd...balancing.

Necrodancer - Beat my first Daily Challenge. Today's throws you a free heal spell in Zone 1, an Obsidian Longsword at you in like Zone 2, and a ton of healing in Zone 3, so yeah. EZ.

Trying to clear all zones mode without using Bow/Longsword/Spear. So far can get consistently to Zone 3, but usually end up petering out there if I don't have a way to deal with ice OR hit enemies at an angle. Also grinding away at Monk, but the urge to pick up gold after killing an enemy is just too strong. I've never actually died to anything except for being an idiot and picking up gold. Also beat Dove mode, was kinda boring except for some miniboss juggling in Zone 4. Not as EZ mode as Melody but definitely easier than Cadence.
