General Chat / Re: What Games Are You Playing 2013?
« on: April 29, 2013, 08:27:26 PM »
As someone who played through all three Mass Effect games at roughly the same time, (I started the series a little before 3 came out) as an adept, I had the most fun in 3 by far.

Oh, Adept is the most overpowered in 1, no doubt. Stasis works on everybody. Even the last boss.

And they're useless in 2.

But in 3, they're great. OK, Singularity is pretty bad (except in MP), but Warp/Throw is good. Warp/Cluster Grenade is better. And pull has its uses if you're using a good shield stripping gun. They're a lot of fun.

I put about 300 hours into ME3's multiplayer, and I almost never take cover. I usually just use soft cover like Perfect Dark or something, as Mass Effect is the first FPS I've played since, uh, Perfect Dark. It seems to work!!

Super Robot Wars OGs 2: Played through. A lot of fun! Played on EX Hard, as my roommate beat the game before me. Got about 52 skill points. Wasn't trying for them all, just enough to get the final level.

Granzon was my top ace, with nearly 200 kills. He's clearly the strongest unit in the game - even on EX hard with no upgrades he's practically invincible.
Second top ace was... Ryoto, in the Armorlion, with 180 kills. He was also one of my best units, and he joins very early. The strongest twin I had for the whole game was Yuuki (Main) (Rathgrith Raven) and Ryoto (Sub) (Armorlion)

I think the Rathgrith Raven is the single most useful mech in the game. It got me basically every skill point in the EX portion of the game with Yuuki's twin spirit, it's as durable as a Grungust, but very dodgy. It's got a lot of power against everything but bosses... But that's why you have your other 30 units. And he joins incredibly early. Sure, mechs like Exexbein or Geant Chevalier (probably the #2 and #3 strongest mechs that I found) are better, but him and Ryoto were useful the whole game - I had them cover the entire left side in the final level! And I wouldn't dare send mechs like Aussenseiter, Vysaga, or Compatible Kaiser anywhere near those guys, or they'd get torn apart.

Anyway, the game was fun. Honestly, with a few exceptions (Guests, lategame plane enemies) the grunts were actually pretty tame. And your guys get way more accurate as you go on, which kind of surprised me considering earlygame hit rates. SP was also never a concern outside of a couple of lategame levels (The last Earth Route split level was tough, as I wasn't expecting the Air Christmas to show up, and I had blown all my SP earlier.)

Still, it was a lot of fun. And the last boss was tough, hitting half my guys with his spirit lock, including both people that have the cure status spirit, leaving half my guys unable to attack for the first turn.

-90% Damage is Flash, yes. It's a Djinn release. It has initiative, but you can't spam it every turn.

In both games, the cooldown period only activated if you used a summon. Then the Djinn used would automatically re-set after a few turns.

However, if you wanted to, say, spam Flash ingame, you could also spend a turn to re-set a Djinn you have used.

This means that one turn, you would take 90% Less damage, but the next turn Flash would not be active and you would take full damage. The turn after you could use it again for 90% reduction. As Flash has initiative, this was still pretty effective. You could combine it with other less effective Djinn like Granite.

To clarify
 - The cooldown period is only activated if you use a summon
 - Otherwise, you have to spend a turn in order to make the Djinn usable again.

Fire Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow

 - Finished. On Hard Mode. The difficulty was... It's tough to say. It picked up for damn sure. Ninja reinforcements are still the worst thing ever, though I actually feel like they worked really well in chapter 10X, as you KNEW they were coming and from where. Whole team was strong. Ended up using

 - Marth
 - My Unit
 - Ogma
 - Yumina
 - Minerva
 - Sirius
 - Belf
 - Jeorge
 - Katarina
 - Horace
 - Palla

- Tried out a couple others, though they were dropped. Pretty much everyone here was solid, though they required varying amounts of help. Chapter 19 was absolutely ridiculous. Warp and Rescue helped a lot.

I dunno, I feel like the difficulty was good, if maybe a little on the hard side for my first playthrough, but it was satisfying. The in battle save points help a LOT.

Overall, good game. Better than Shadow Dragon for sure.

Also played and beat FF9 for the first time. Had an incredibly epic last boss fight against Necron, where Steiner ended up being the last one standing, condemned, then he entered Trance, got hit with Necron's HP-1 attack, and swung at him for 9999 for the kill. Reminds me of my similarly epic final fight against Sephiroth, where I ended up taking a non materia equipped Vincent into the fight, as I had to split my party into two to fight Jenova and had only been using three characters.

Barely did any sidequests, and felt fairly underleveled at 46, but it was a lot of fun.

I dunno if any of you guys saw this before, but I was looking for videos of my FF Hack on youtube, and found a guy doing a low level game of it! He's also done videos of Eviltype that are quite interesting. Beastly242.

http://www.youtube.com/user/Beastly242?feature=g-user-u    Is his channel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1n3h3xjKnI     Is a link to his fight Vs. Poltergeist in my hack, which is his most recent video.

The video's aren't commentated, but he usually has good dialogue in the description.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery
 - Started this. Hard mode, which seemed like a mistake at first, with the prologue chapters actually being tough, but the actual story chapters have been... Much easier, if bigger, so now I'm glad. Fighter MU. So far so good, at chapter 5. Hardest level so far was probably prologue... 6. Against Ogma. There was just no room to run - I had to restart a lot.

Also been playing some Pokemon. Thinking of training a couple pokes in case they ever release a Wii U game for random battles. (I know that the DS games have them, but I really enjoyed Battle Revolutions randoms for some reason)

Oh, here's a challenge for you if you wanted one.

Tynamo
 - If Tynamo's health is in the red, he must choose to switch out (If possible)
 - Must always have at least one physical move, one special move, and one "other' move. The last can be anything. (When possible)
 - Can evolve after eating 5 different berry types in battle. Can evolve again after eating 9 different berry types in battle. (Types of berries - Cheri, Chesto, Pecha, Rawst, Aspear, Leppa, Oran, Persim, Lum, Sitrus
.)

Couple of After Years/Zeromus DS notes, seeing as how my lurker skills can vote on it.

I don't have exact numbers.

AVERAGE HP = 3828

Edward = 83%
Palom = 84%
Ursula = 115%
Ceodore = 120%
Edge = 120%

Big Bang looks like it does around 95% Average. Though Palom does have above average magic defense.
Zeromus Flare Immunity is really hurting Palom's damage - His best bet is probably Quake, but that cuts his damage by a third. (Unless Zeromus immunes quake, in which case he'll have to with a level 3 elemental spell, which has a longer cast time.) If you allow Dualcast, he'll be great, but three people can get it, and they all want it.
Edward has 19 full party heals. After those are out, he is forced to use his much weaker High Potions, which are 25% party heals.
He can also multitarget Phoenix Downs, if he has to Hide a Big Bang or something. (Not likely to be useful, but it can work)
Ceodore Can either be an OK Physical attacker, or a backup healer/shell user.
Ursula is pretty much just average physical damage.
Ceodore and Ursula have an excellent combination attack, but I don't have damage numbers for it - I do know that it's charge time is very low, and it outdamages both of them attacking. Endgame it was 9999, but this is personal experience, compared to their physicals ~2500.
Edge is basically just a physical attacker/backup single target healer.

I think the team has enough variety to pull it off, though I'm not sure on the damage numbers for what would probably be considered DL legal equipment. Zeromus's black hole prevents buffing from being a great plan.

Basically, it comes down to this - Can Edward survive Big Bang/Meteor? If yes, team probably wins. If not, probably not.

I haven't really read all of these topics yet, but it's kind of interesting, and I do have some RPG Maker experience.

It's probably good to make TP something different than the default. Otherwise, it's just different coloured MP. Djinn's idea is good. Anything to make a battle system more interesting is good.

I'm not sure what scripts you plan on using, or what you've already got planned, but I find a turn order display incredibly helpful in an RPG.

Anyway, just throwing an idea out that I always wanted to use, but never really got working right. I like Wild Arms FP. I also like that it is a resource shared by the party. I must have seen this battle system somewhere before, but back when I was messing around with making a VX game, I wanted there to be two resources. I'll go over it now, just for the sake of it.

MP, which had your normal skills, which were less powerful, and Elemental Skills, which used points taken from a global resource.

A fight started out with an equal amount of all elemental points available. There were four - Fire, Water, Wind, and Darkness. Most attacks used only one of these, but some could use multiple. At the end of every turn, every element would increase a small amount. (Let's say the fight started out with 20 in each element, and the end of each turn, it increased by 5 or so). In addition, using an attack would cause the next element in line to increase by half. For example, using a 20 Cost Fire attack would increase Water by 10.

These points were shared by both you and the enemies. You could select to use the move even if not enough points were available at the time - if enough were created by the time your turn came up, then the move would be executed. Otherwise it would fail.

The point is, combined with being able to see whose turns were coming up, it was interesting to plan ahead. In addition, it let me come up with some neat skill ideas, and balance weaker skills in a way that might make them useful. (I had one skill that used a lot of one element and spread it out to the others, for example.)

I've never been a master scripter, so I did this mostly with in battle stuff. It did work, though it needed a lot of fine tuning (IE: Showing the amount of elements available on the screen, probably with pictures).

Honestly, the game never got far at all, and a lot of the skills didn't work, but I really liked the idea of it. Enemy scripting was a problem here, too. It wasn't impossible, but it took quite a bit of effort. That being said, if you know the fact that "This enemy has a really dangerous Black attack" then you would try to limit the amount of Black available. At least, that was the idea.

Anyway, I kind of went off on a tangent. But from what I've seen VX lets you do a fair bit of unique stuff. Even something like Lufia IP can make a battle system a lot more interesting. Anyway, I'll probably be reading through the rest of these topics in a bit. Probably post a bit more.

I've messed with RPG Maker a fair bit over the years, but I've run into two problems

1 - The game is in progress for too long, and I would come up with a "cool new idea" that I wanted to put in. This happens a lot. Then my games plot became a complete mess.
2 - Lack of motivation. This goes off and on to be honest, but unlike a game hack, an RPG Maker game can basically be endless. Which is scary!

Anyway, it looks like you guys are planning a lot better than I ever was, which is definitely the right way to go about it!

As a side note, my mess of a plot in my RPG Maker 2000 game is why my FF6 hack has a joke plot, and the Fire Emblem one is like it too. (Not saying the RPG Maker game didn't have a sense of humor, but it tried, and failed, to be serious.)

Argh, I thought I fixed that text thing early on. Thanks for pointing it out to me.

I know "why" the mercenary with 0 HP happens (Peg Knight has too much STR, and knocks him down to 0 HP in a cutscene, but doesn't kill him) But not sure how to fix it. It seemed mostly harmless though.

New title screen is a good idea. If I ever come up with a hack name, I'll try and do it.

Yeah, the text is really silly. It tries to have a coherent plot, though! It's just completely ridiculous. It does get a "little" more serious in "Eliwood" mode, but the characters are still silly. Figured it'd be better than barely changing the original text, though. (It took forever though)

In general, the characters are a bit stronger than original (maybe too much) the enemies are buffed a bit too, eventually. (In particular the bosses). I've attached a list of growths at the bottom, if you are curious. It's a little messy but it has the info you would need.

Actually, if you're looking for a challenge, download a save with hector hard mode unlocked. It is changed. I playtested it - It is completable, though I'd recommend playing through the first 10 stages first.

The default difficulty is along the lines of the original game, a little tougher bosses, and a little harder lategame.

Anyway, thanks or posting, I'll actually probably show up in chat at some point for a while, I've been meaning to anyway, if anyone has any questions (or whatever)

Game Design and Modifications / Fire Emblem Hack
« on: May 30, 2012, 02:01:44 PM »
Hey,

I was debating whether or not to post this, but I decided to give it a try.

Anyway, this is a hack of Fire Emblem 7 (The first one released in English).

The changes are pretty large - Enemies are changed, playable characters, all dialogue (even supports) are changed pretty significantly. The bosses are as well. Some are original, some are characters from other games.

Anyway, the graphics are mostly original, and the quality on them varies greatly from when we first started to when we started to get decent at it. The dialogue is kind of stupid, but might be good for a laugh. Less random humor than my last hack. But a lot more dialogue (it was ridiculous).

Some text and stuf is basically stolen from certain things, but a fair bit is actually original.

If people are interested, I can post character bases and growths, or anything else you think might be interesting.

What's left to do?

Not a whole lot, really. Possibly some balance changes. I'd like to have custom battle sprites for the lords. That's about it, really. The maps are the same and will likely be staying the same - This took a long time as is (About a year?), and I've learned from numerous failed RPG Maker games in my younger years to know your limits.

Anyway, I've attached a couple pictures. The link to DL it is below. Post comments or whatever as you like.

Been playing a bit lately.

Finished Mass Effect 2, Adept.

Pretty good stuff, combat was more enjoyable. The characters were more than blocks of wood, so that was nice.

Near the end I felt it was dragging on a bit, like "I *guess* I'll do this mission" sort of thing, but I enjoyed it. Good game overall.

Finished Persona 3, as well.

I played Persona 4 first. I still think 4 is a better game, for a variety of reasons (Social Links being better is one), but I enjoyed it for what it was. 90 hours or so.

Speaking of Social Links, some were interesting enough to read, and others were just boring as heck. When they're written decently or at least kind of interesting I like them! But sometimes they really just aren't.

Started The Answer, I'm about 9 hours in. I like the game because it's perfect to just grind at it while you're talking to someone on Skype or listening to headphones or watching a video or something, which is good.

Also started Mass Effect 3, a bit after the attack on the citadel.

I have a *really* high opinion of it so far. Like, everything seems so much better. I've also played like 50 hours of multiplayer with friends before even starting the game. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I'm really enjoying the combat, and the story is going somewhere, at least, and hasn't stalled too much. For a note on who I used each game -

Mass Effect: Garrus and Ashley
Mass Effect 2: Mordin and Thane
Mass Effect 3: EDI and Javik

Also, took Inferno Grenades as my bonus power. Now I can carry 9 cluster grenades and blow everything up. It is the best.

Oh, me and a couple friends have been working on an FE7 romhack for a while. Would any of you guys be interested in it? The gameplay is "a bit harder than the original" but it's really not that bad, though Hector Hard Mode is a pretty big jump.

Basically, the characters are different, the text and supports are different, but the maps are the same (Well, the enemies have changed, as have the bosses)

A lot of the bosses are stupid cameos like Tengu, or Haseo, or other random characters that I was thinking of at the time.

Anyway, if anyone's interested, I'll post a topic. It's mostly done, just needs a bit more playtesting.

Been playing a bit recently.

 - Mass Effect - Played this for the first time.Adept. Finished, did a fair number of sidequests, though not all of them. Especially near the end.

I'm sure you've heard most of the ups and downs of this game before. EX - Driving up cliff walls - sucks! I agree with most of them. Combat started out decent enough, if a bit difficult (I am bad at shooting games), but gradually turned incredibly easy as I got better stuff and Singularity became more awesome.

Well, I could have turned the difficulty up, so I can't complain too much. Mostly used Garrus/Ashley.

Mass Effect 2
 - Playing this now. Finished most characters Loyalty. Enjoying the gameplay quite a bit more than ME1. The story hasn't really done a lot, but I've enjoyed it. The characters are more interesting, they've mostly got quirks and actually have a reason to join you - I like that. Though, again, recently I've been feeling the missions get a bit repetitive, but the difficulty feels better (at least on the difficulty I'm playing at - perhaps ME1 was better balanced at higher ones), and the gameplay is much more engaging. Still enjoying the game quite a bit.

 - Mostly playing Paragon, but I pick the renegade choices if I feel like it, or if that's the choice I want to make.

Mass Effect 3
 - Picked it up. Played some multiplayer. It's not bad. I'm not very good though. Uncertain if I'm going to go into this game right after I beat ME2 or wait a bit and play something else inbetween.

Super Robot Wars MX
 - Played through this a bit ago. Not bad, standard SRW. Kind of easy. A couple of the lategame levels were real slogs (The Dendoh ones in particular) though I Liked the EVA levels quite a bit.

Trying to decide between Persona 3 FES or Baten Kaitos Origins for the next RPG I play.

38
Cool to hear.

I've been meaning to play through this myself at some point. I see that there are four versions. I think I remember trying the White version, though I didn't get too far. Maybe I should just go with the normal one, I assume that's well balanced, though I figured you might have needed playtesting info on some of the others.

I have wanted to play it, though, It'll probably take me a while to do so. Still, when I do, I'll post comments if you're interested.

Also, I've been meaning to update my hack on romhacking.net as well, where did you upload the file too so that they would accept it? The first time around I found some guy who would host it, but he doesn't do that anymore.

It's been a while, and I'm not sure what I've said before, but I'm going over a few games I've played recently here.

This is definitely disjointed. I'm just writing down whatever comes to mind. Probably a few spoilers in here also.

Xenosaga Series
 - Finished. It's been a while now, so I don't remember everything that happened.

I stuck with the same team in all three games.
Jr/MOMO/chaos.

Jr. Was solid in the first game, though having only physical damage sucked at some points, but was great at others (Those magic absorbing, flying...

things.) He was average in the second and third games, though not bad in either.

MOMO was mediocre in the first game, her HP was way too low. She was very good in the second game! She dealt lots of damage. The third game she was,

again, pretty good. I honestly remember the least about the battles in the third game, even though I remember thinking they weren't bad. I guess they were just forgettable.

chaos was OK in the first game, though I never got all his techs because come on. He was the knocker-downer in the second game, and... Probably... Did something in the third.

Battle System wise...
 - The first game was a bit repetitive, but not bad. It was slow, but I remember the battles more. The hardest part in the game (Actually, all three games) was the... Song of Nephilim, I think it was called? The one with the flamethrower soldier randoms. Those were the toughest enemies in the game. I think that was the only time in any of the games I felt like I just needed more HP, so I had to grind.

 - Second game... It seemed like it would be good if you played it "right." I don't think I did it completely wrong, my team was luckily enough to not

overlap on elements, and I only had one down/air-er. I did eventually get the hang of it, and didn't think most of the boss fights were too bad. Hated the randoms though. Just seemed stupidly durable. And I weep for someone with a, say, Shion/chaos/Ziggy team.

 - Third game had a simple, easy battle system. It was nice to be... Well, simple and easy, after the last game. I remember enjoying it, but I don't actually remember any fights.

Storywise, it just seemed like there were way too many characters. And they introduced more every game, and never gave any of them enough screentime. I was satisfied with the game after beating Dmitri, though the after that stuff was a bit... odder. I've got a pretty open mind though, and it was at least pretty and flashy.

I'm not sure exactly how I would rate them. I enjoyed them, but I hadn't played an RPG in a while.

Anyway, on to .Hack GU

Team, when they were all available, was Haseo/Sakubo/Antares. Swapped Antares out for Yata at the end.

Switched between pretty much all the weapnos for Haseo. Big sword was best in the first game. Enjoyed guarding to cancel my lag, it made me feel like a pro. Twin swords got way better in game two. Scythe took some getting used to but might have been the weapon I used most, Heavenly Wheel is great. Guns are solid as well, but you get them pretty late so it's tough to judge.

Plotwise/Pacingwise, I always felt in each game that they started out decently enough, got slow during the middle, and picked up near the end. Leveling up too much seemed to make the bosses too easy, so after a while I tried to stay underleveled.

The toughest fight I remember was against Kite and friends on the third game. I ended up just grinding out a few levels, though I might have been able to do it otherwise... Which of course made them too easy, as well as the last boss. Oh well.

Oh and Sakaki fails. Atoli screeching all the time in the fight against her avatar was pretty... funny, too.
I liked the avatar battles... Except the last one. That one was just really repetitive. I mean, they were easy, but I liked the change of pace.

Probably liked these more than Xenosaga. Haven't played the originals, but they look pretty different.

Also played Fate/Extra, Archer servant. Liked this game a lot, though I am a Type Moon fan. Rin Route. Lost once against Caster due to stunlock. Died to randoms about... three times? All were my own fault, though, for not paying enough attention, or leaving myself open for too long without throwing a skill or heal inbetween.

It seemed like the big secret to the game was "Heal even when you aren't hurt. And if you're making three blind guesses in a row, throw a skill in there." That pretty much worked most of the time.

Also died twice against Berserker, and twice to Saber (just because of NP, though I Rho Aias'd it afterwards.)

Last boss was a joke. Elixir/Fake Spiral Sword spam = Win. Actually that pretty much beat Saber to, I just got cocky and walked into an instakill.

Plot was good! ...Well, it kind of lost me at the end. But I was into talking to all the NPCs and seeing their updated text and such every round, so it must have done something to keep my interest. Probably the game I've liked the most of those I've played recently.

Also playing Wild ARMs 5. I'm at the four towers. I had been plodding along right now, but a lot of sidequests are open to me now, and I went up one of the towers with some difficulty, and ran into a huge Save Point Unlock guy that took forever to kill (Though I wasn't actually in any danger), and tried Persephone once or twice, realized if I could win I would exhaust all my resources, and climbed down.

Basically I need to either grind or do sidequests. What sidequests would be the easiest/most helpful? Or easy to get good badges and such.

Team is usually Chuck/Carol/Avril. Chuck = Moon, Carol = Sea, Avril = Sky. Though I do switch the others in when needed.

That's mostly it. I'm probably forgetting some stuff. I'll post more eventually when I think of it/play something exciting.

40
Wild ARMs 5
 - Playing this for the first time.

Currently up to Mt. Chug Chug. Won the first Nightburn fight, but failed at the duel miserably with Mountain Dean, and I wasted all my Hi-Fire's on the first boss fight.

Team (Lv. 32-33)
 - Chuck (Moon)
 - Avril (Sky)
 - Carol (Sea)
 - Greg (Sword)
 - Dean (Mountain)
 - Rebecca (Luck)

I swap in when necessary.

I'm at least enjoying the battles. The world map is now actually tolerable with the wheel. The story is, well, OK. But the game is enjoyable enough.

Guess I'll switch Dean to Sword or something and try the fight again >_>

In the mean time, I've beaten Xenosaga 2, 3, and the .Hack GU series. I'll post some thoughts sometime later on.

41
Talking about TAY, I've played through the game twice (Once on Wii with friends, once again on the rerelease on PSP).

Character thoughts both times, if you were wondering!

TEAM 1
 - Edge
 - Rydia
 - Luca
 - Porom
 - Edward

- Edge is probably the best character I've used in either party. He has offense, he has HP, he has magic, he has Itemcaste Haste and Blink. He has SMOKE. Smoke is amazing. He's great. Excellent equipment selection, too. He can even use stuff like Godhand, which is found early.
 - Rydia is solid enough. Leviathan gets used a lot. Bahamut is way too late to see much use but he's good too.
 - Luca is... mediocre. She's not bad or anything! She just didn't really impress. Good HP and good equipment, but that's about it.
 - Porom is a solid enough White Mage. Dualcast is nice but way late, as was said. Spent most of her time buffing, instead of healing, because...
 - Edward is more then enough for healing. By far the biggest surprise, I'd say he was the second best PC in the party. Instant 4K heals for everyone! Phoenix Downs for everyone! Oh yeah, MULTITARGET BLINK BAND with Rydia. As for Bardsong, there are worse ways to waste turns. You might get MT Haste! Protect/Shell isn't bad either. Hide even helped against Ahriman, and beats death counters. Edward Hides, everyone elses timer runs out, MT Phoenix Down. His biggest problem is getting him out of that level rut he's almost certainly stuck in.

Second Team (PSP) was

- Ceodore
- Ursula
- Palom
- Leonora
- Zangetsu

- Ceodore starts off a little slow, but he is really good eventually. Twin Rush is an excellent Band, his White Magic is good, and he is fast. His lower HP is a bit of a problem early on, but doesn't matter much later.
 - Ursula is similarly good. Tenketsu is a good substitute attack, Chakra is usable. But really, she's strong, she's fast, and that band is again very good. It charges quickly and doesn't cost much MP.
 - Palom starts off slow too. His speed is low early on until you get equipment to fix that, and it takes a little while to learn spells like Quake. But when you get Quake and similar spells he becomes amazing. Dualcast is late, again, but really good, making him pump out 16000 damage a turn.
 - Leonora is... She's OK. I didn't level enough to get any actual Black Magic besides... Stop and Osmose. Now, Stop is actually really good! But it's probably not worth the slower White Magic learning.
 - Zangetsu is... Well, he's not great. But he's not as bad as I was expecting! I was expecting him to be awful, especially after his pitiful performance in Edge's chapter, but he has a few things going for him. He gets a strong MT Lightning spell, and his INT is actually higher then Edges. And... Human Kite stops Valvalis Spin! Yes! ...OK, that's about it. He's not good, but he wasn't as bad as I thought.

But really, the character balance really is pretty good outside of some (Harley).

42
I completely agree, Edge is amazing in TAY. He just... has everything. Fast, high physical damage, high HP(!?), amazing equipment selection, seems like every chest in the last dungeon is an upgrade for him, good MT damage eventually (!?!?!?).

Though, if he finished his chapter fairly low level I could see him being bad, the best thing to do is probably just kill off the other ninjas when they rejoin and let Edge get all the EXP.

Updated with a weapon list! Also fixed the formatting a little on some of the earlier stuff.

Armor will probably be later on.

Alright, I think I've got the hang of the damage calculation thing.
One thing, though, what did you use for average enemy Defense/Magic Defense? Or does it really matter?

In my playtesting, I usually ended up in the low 40's by the end of the game, so you're probably right that Flare is a bit too high. Enemy EXP in the last couple dungeons has increased a lot, but I don't think it'll make THAT big a difference. Probably more around 40 would be good. I found Flare useful, due not so much to more resistances, but higher enemy MDEF in general.

Yeah, I'm not expecting anyone to grind for Ultima. But if they want to they can!

I'll probably update the main post with an equipment list later. When I do, I'll post.

Updated the Main Post with spell changes, as well as who can learn what spells! Read if you're interested.

As an aside, I'm thinking of doing a stat topic at some point! I was looking at the FF6 and Meeple Fantasy 6 topics, how did you do the damage calculations? Is there a formula that you can use? I'd like to do it the same way those were done, so if I knew what you used, that'd be great!

Thanks!

Played for about an hour! A few random notes.

The main character appears to like gravy.
The first town has a lot of equipment!
I like the level up/battle menus. I'm not sure how custom they are, but they seem good!
Spelling and mapping seem alright. I'm no expert, though.
One piece of advice that I always liked, I heard it somewhere... If you're gonna give someone a piece of equipment that they can buy in a shop, give them gold instead. It's not that important or anything, but I liked it.
I tried to search all the random stuff and got no response. Darn!
Sound effects seemed a bit loud in comparison to the music.
Yeah, it's kind of interesting fumbling through this! Every reference goes over my head, but that's fine. Anyway, I only played for an hour or so (I beat the tower), but I'll probably go back to it later. ALSO - Unless I was missing something obvious, those annoying invisopits are just... annoying. (Well, except on the way back).

The thing with the most potential to me seems like it would be the battles. They're normal turn based, sure, but having a lot of characters who fill specific roles can be interesting!

The games complete. I made it a fair while ago, and I've made a fair number of changes to it since then, including changing Wrexsoul significantly (He was basically the same), making new attacks for the three statues, and a lot of typo fixes (There's probably still some around, but I've got most of them).

I'm not going to say I'm not going to touch it again, but I'm pretty happy with where it is now.

Anyway, I can see complaining about Dancer - She originally had an outline, but I thought it looked really jarring with the white hair, it looked... too much like an outline! That being said, it's probably one of the worse sprites.

Sprites that took the longest to make were...

Black Mage
Mimic

Sprites that took the least amount of time included

Samurai
Berserker

Now, I perfectly understand talking about Dancer, because I won't deny that it's an odd sprite, but I actually thought Blue Mage was one of the better ones? It's based off the FF Tactics Advance Blue Mage, actually, just wondering what you thought was wrong with it? I seen your sprites and they're really good so obviously you know what you're doing!

But yeah, the games complete, barring any major balance oversights or huge typos. I know you've gotten a lot of FF6 hacks, but if anyone wants to play it, I'd like to hear what you think!

EDIT: Also, I know the Face Pics are bad >_>, but they're at least mostly in a consistent style!

With Megaupload taken down, I recommend using the Romhacking.net link. It should be the same file.

http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/650/

DOWNLOAD LINK

I would've attached it using the RPGDL thing, but it's way too big for that, so here is a Megaupload link. Remember to apply to Version 1.0 Of the game!

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R2OBUV4Q

I'd been messing with hacking this game for ages, I remember posting custom monsters on Gamefaqs back when they didn't care about that kind of discussion. Anyway, I had always wanted to make a fully edited hack - but that requires a lot of effort, and the tools for, say, script editing were never simple. But then FF3USME got a script editor! So I and a friend worked on this together. We originally only planned on playing it between us and a few friends, but I thought it was pretty good so I decided to release it to the public at romhacking.net. This version is a bit newer then the one that is posted there - it's got some bug fixes and some minor balance changes (lol ChaosDrgns)

Anyway, what's changed? Gameplay, Character Sprites, Text. All of it is edited! You might not be a big fan of one of, say, the text, which is fine! You can ignore it pretty easily, and at least it isn't the same as the original script!

Anyway, about the text. I knew I couldn't write a good serious story without coming off as terribly corny, so I went the parody route. There ARE some serious parts to the story, it's not like, say, Awful Fantasy which is a joke a minute, but the script does not take itself seriously. At all. Some jokes are injokes, some are pretty stupid! But there is some stuff in there that *I* think is pretty funny, so hopefully you will too!

Sprites were all changed! I figured that this was a very big part of making this feel like more then just a "hack", and it was pretty difficult to get good looking sprites with the palette limitations you have. Especially since we found out about things like how you can't use the last four colours because the game changes them whenever they feel like! Still, this was mostly my friends work, and I was very happy with it! Some of them had a lot more effort spent on them then others, but I think they all have their own charm.

So, anyway, the gameplay. What's changed? Well...

MONSTERS
 - All bosses are changed. Some minorly (Vargas is only a little different) and some almost completely (Phunbaba, for example). The difficulty of the game is not absurdly high. It ramps up a bit near the end, but I was aiming for "slightly harder then the original."
 - Some enemies were changed. Some randoms were changed, some were slightly changed, some were left the same. For the most part, don't expect anything too exciting here.

MAGIC
 - Espers no longer teach magic.
 - Espers no longer give stat boosts on level up.
 - Summons are noticably stronger.
 - Magic is instead learned from equipped items. Only certain people can learn certain spells.

CHARACTERS
 - Characters have all been changed to "Classes". I expect you to rename them.

TERRA - WHITE MAGE (Male)
 - Fight
 - Health
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 36
SPEED: 31
STAMINA: 28
MAG. PWR: 43

Health sets Regen on all party members.
Learns all white Magic, in addition to pearl. One of two characters with natural magic. The only character with access to Life 2 and Life 3, which are very helpful.

LOCKE - DRAGOON (Female)
 - Fight
 - Jump
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 42
SPEED: 35
STAMINA: 39
MAG. PWR: 25

Can equip heavy armor. Learns lightning magic as well as a few support spells, but magic power is low. Special "Dragoon Helm" gotten late game makes Jump hit multiple times. Generally one of the highest damage dealers late game thanks to this, but lacks mid game.

EDGAR - RED MAGE (Male)
 - Fight
 - Steal
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 34
SPEED: 34
STAMINA: 34
MAG. PWR: 34

Can steal. Learns up to the level 2 spells in both damage and curing, as well as a variety of status spells. World of Ruin swords Tyrfing and Excalibur change Magic into X-Magic, making Red Mage the only X-Magic capable character. However, with X-Magic, you cannot summon. Magic is generally a better choice then physically attacking, but Excalibur's physical attacks can contend.

SABIN - MONK (Female)
 - Fight
 - Blitz
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 50
SPEED: 39
STAMINA: 47
MAG. PWR: 24

Somewhat similar to sabin. Higher base defense/attack, but doesn't have many weapons. Blitzes all have an element attached, and are all offensive. Learns some curing magic. Strongest weapon hits four times. Weapons all increase maximum HP, making her have one of the highest HP values on the team.

SHADOW - BLUE MAGE (Female)

 - Fight
 - Lore
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 32
SPEED: 37
STAMINA: 26
MAG. PWR: 38

A good number of Blue Magic spells are different then the original. They tend to have a high MP cost. People in towns give you hints as to where to learn them, and bosses cast a variety of them, so they are generally not too difficult to learn. Learns some basic offensive magic, as well.

Blue Magic is useful, Pearl Wind is another way to heal, and there are some good damaging and status spells in there as well.

CELES - BLACK MAGE (Female)
 - Fight
 - Morph
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 29
SPEED: 29
STAMINA: 25
MAG. PWR: 50

Has a lot of Magic Power, and learns all Black Magic. Morph can be used to jack stats up even further. Little variety, but lots of power. Lacks against enemies with elemental resistances until she learns Flare or Meteor.

CYAN - SAMURAI (Male)
 - Fight
 - SwdTech
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 45
SPEED: 33
STAMINA: 33
MAG. PWR: 26

All Katana are two handed. SwdTech has a strange variety of moves. Very high evasion. Learns spells such as Quartr and Imp, though they are learned quite early on. Evasion is quite high, but physical defense is fairly low. One of the oddest characters.

GAU - BEASTMASTER (Male)

 - Rage
 - Leap
 - Control
 - Item

VIGOR: 35
SPEED: 35
STAMINA: 36
MAG. PWR: 35

Control is very powerful, working on nearly all random enemies. Rage also has a good variety of strong rages, if you can find them. Attack power is fairly low, but can equip weapons.

SETZER - PIRATE (Male)

 - Capture
 - Slot
 - Tools
 - Item

VIGOR: 36
SPEED: 41
STAMINA: 42
MAG. PWR: 27

Strange variety of moves. Can do a bit of everything. Highest defensive capabilities in the game. Lagomorph is buffed in terms of healing to be decent! Tools are similar to the original game. Some are changed elementwise or to what status they inflict, so he can inflict slow or deal water damage.

MOG - DANCER (Female)
 - Fight
 - Dance
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 31
SPEED: 48
STAMINA: 22
MAG. PWR: 38

Strong Ice magic is available, very capable black magic user. Dance is generally stronger early game, like the original mog. High speed and evasions, some equipment grants Auto-Image. Weapons are usable from the back row.

STRAGO - NINJA (Male)
 - Fight
 - Throw
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 36
SPEED: 48
STAMINA: 30
MAG. PWR: 34

Dual-wields ninja swords. Throw does lots of damage as well. Pitifully low defenses. Has fairly powerful Fire Magic. Basically, he has a lot of offense, with almost no defense besides Evasion. Lategame, one of the most reliable damage dealers, because no enemy will be able to resist the damage he deals out.

RELM - KNIGHT (Female)
 - Fight
 - Runic
 - Magic
 - Item

VIGOR: 44
SPEED: 36
STAMINA: 44
MAG. PWR: 33

Wields Swords or Knightswords. Knightswords tend to auto-grant Safe or Shell. Auto-covers allies with low HP. Learns most white magic (Up to Cure3) but not Life 2 or 3. Runic can be handy, as well, but her only means of dealilng damage is with the Fight command, so she may have to be in the front row.

UMARO - BERSERKER (???)

VIGOR: 67
SPEED: 42
STAMINA: 58
MAG. PWR: 46

Essentially Umaro+. Is automatically berserked with an accessory, accessories buff this character a lot. Honestly found the Berserker tough to balance!

GOGO - MIMIC (???)

VIGOR: 24
SPEED: 27
STAMINA: 21
MAG. PWR: 21

This is pretty much Gogo with some modified stats/equipment usage. Still, in a game where characters don't have as much variety, this is very useful.

AL (Replaces Banon)

 - Fight
 - Shock
 - Mimic
 - Item

VIGOR: 105
SPEED: 103
STAMINA: 98
MAG. PWR: 101

Al is a pretty good character. He's also the optional superboss! He's beatable, but very challenging.

EXILE (Replaces Leo)

 - Fight
 - Item

VIGOR: 52
SPEED: 38
STAMINA: 41
MAG. PWR: 36

ITEMS
 - All items are changed, with the exception of some relics.
 - Items teach spells. You can check this for non-weapons by going into the menu. It's a bit of a pain, though.
 - Balance is different then the original FF6!
 - Some relics are removed (Gem Box, Genji Glove, Offering, Gauntlet) and have been replaced with other things.

ETC
 - All rages are changed, they all have two attacks rather then Fight and an attack.
 - Chupon only shows up for one fight in the colosseum - everything else can be wagered for something!
 - There are a couple optional superbosses lying around. Those are always fun!

Anyway, if you're interested, I've attached it below! I'll still probably be a mostly lurker who posts once in a while, but I'm interested in hearing any comments that you might have, and I'll respond! Thanks for taking the time to read this wall of text. There's also a few screenshots below. So if you're not sick of playing FF6 Hacks yet, play this one!

Decided to play through all the Xenosaga games, despite what I've heard from here!

Anyway, I've finished the first two.

XENOSAGA 1
 - The game was alright. It started really slow, but when stuff started happening it was interesting. A lot of technobabble early on especially, and that could turn off some people.

The combat system was OK. It was simple, but not too hard. There were a couple rough spots (The boss of the Cathedral Ship was pretty challenging), but the hardest spot in the game in my opinion was the Song of Nephilim. Not any boss in there. Just the flamethrower randoms. I wiped to them once, and decided to just grind out a couple levels.

Speaking of randoms, they weren't worth fighting. Maybe that's why I was underleveled, but it took way too long. So I ended up abusing that 100% run rate whenever I could.

Overall, the game was alright. Worse then other RPGs I've played, but not unbearable, and the story WAS interesting to see where it would go.

Final team was Jr, chaos, MOMO. Jr. was solid, there were times when ranged physical was really nice, and times where it sucked to have no magic basic attack. chaos was... alright. Just alright. MOMO was kind of bad early on, but usable later. I've been sticking with this team throughout.

XENOSAGA 2

The game starts out much more interesting, in my opinion! Some of the early cutscenes are cool, like the robot car chase. Also there is music this time! MOMO's subconscious was a pretty tough dungeon for being so early on, but I did enjoy it, actually.

The bunny quests were pretty annoying. I only ended up doing a couple. Actually, I haven't really been doing many sidequests in this series at all, or really opening many segment files. I've done a couple, but I don't go out of my way.

Boss fights are pretty entertaining, but man are they long. I'm SURE they could be made faster, but I'm sure I didn't min-max. I did do things like casting Aura Sword or whatnot on my party members to up the elemental chain, so I did alright in the end.

Randoms are, once again, not worth fighting after a certain point. However, this time, a lot more of them are blocking your path and are un-walk-throughable, so you're forced to. Each fight is 10 minutes. I don't mind randoms being threatening, but when they respawn so quickly, it's kind of frustrating.

The plot focused on Jr, which I liked! Shion seemed to have been made about five times worse in this game, in the first she was... kind of annoying, but alright. In this game she's just a jerk.

They introduced too many characters! Stop introducing them! You have enough!

Anyway, the game was... again, alright. It did some things I really liked (Even if it's simple, I like that NPC's have different text depending on whose in front) and others I did not (Randoms.) Also, the skill system was kind of dissapointing.

We'll see how they close up the plot in the third game. I don't think it'll end well! Maybe some series could give a satisfying conclusion with this many villains, but I don't think this game can.

Also I can't kill anyone they always get away, or we're beat up after a boss fight. It doesn't bother me but it happens a LOT.

Discussion / Re: Best in Show

NES
 - Megaman 3
 - Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
 - Super Mario Bros.

- Megaman 3 is my favorite Megaman game, Zelda II is my favorite Zelda game. Both are excellent. Super Mario Bros I find more replayable then Mario 3.

DOS
 - Crystal Caves
 - Treasure Mountain
 - Princess Maker II

- Haven't played a lot here. Crystal Caves was a huge part of my childhood. Treasure Mountain is just filler... But I did manage to max out the storehouse! Princess Maker II is pretty solid, and was I think DOS.

SNES
 - Super Metroid
 - Zelda: A Link to the past
 - Super Mario World

Super Metroid is one of the best games I've ever played. Link to the past and Mario world are both solid first party nintendo titles. Other games that could have made it here include FF6, Megaman X and Lufia 2.

GENESIS
 - Shining Force
 - Gain Ground
 - Gemfire

I don't really have a big Genesis background, but I knew friends who were incredibly into Shining Force. Gain Ground is fun once in a while! I like Gemfire but I'm not actually any good at it.

Windows 95/98/2000
 - Diablo II
 - Starcraft
 - Age of Empires

Not a lot of PC gaming from me. Diablo II was played to DEATH, though.

N64
 - Paper Mario
 - Super Mario 64
 - Banjo-Tooie

Yeah, this works. Paper Mario isn't as good as TTYD, but still a fun game. Mario 64 is good, and Banjo-Tooie has some nostalgia going for it at least.

PS1
 - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
 - Final Fantasy VII
 - Breath of Fire III

Symphony of the night is excellent, if pretty easy. FF7 is great, but I've only played it once. Breath of Fire 3 is actually more kind of OK, but I enjoyed it.

Gamecube
 - Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
 - Custom Robo
 - F-Zero GX

Paper Mario TTYD is some of the most fun I've ever had with an RPG. Custom Robo is a personal favorite, it's a game with a lot of charm. F-Zero GX took a lot of playtime, I only ever beat about half the chapters on Very Hard.

Gameboy/ Color
 - Wario Land II
 - The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
 - Final Fantasy Legend III

Wario Land II was 100%'d without a FAQ! It was a tough fight for the Zelda Game slot, but I went with Oracle of Seasons because I played it before Link's Awakening. LA is also excellent, however. Final Fantasy Legend III was my first ever RPG.

Gameboy Advance
 - Metroid: Zero Mission
 - Megaman Zero 4
 - Pokemon Emerald

Metroid Zero Mission may be better then Super Metroid! It's close, for sure. Megaman Zero 4 is probably my second favorite Megaman game, behind only Megaman 3. I played that game a LOT. Emerald is the best Pokemon game single player wise.

Nintendo DS
 - Advance Wars: Days of Ruin
 - Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
 - Elite Beat Agents

Days of Ruin is my favorite AW game, though AW2 is close. I liked the game a lot, I just wish it had more single player content. Portrait of Ruin is an excellent Castlevania game. Elite Beat Agents was completed on Hard Rock... Recently, after being dropped for years! Fun! I wanted to have a Fire Emblem game on one of these top three, but I don't think Shadow Dragon is good enough to put here.

PSP
 - Ys 3: The Oath in Felghana
 - Yggdra Union
 - Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy

Oath in Felghana is amazing, one of the best games I've played recently. Yggdra Union is quirky and certainly not for everyone, but I liked it a lot. Dissidia got 80 hours worth put into it, and I could certainly use more!

PS2
 - Persona 4
 - Wild ARMs 4
 - Radiata Stories

Persona 4 is an outstanding game. Wild ARMs 4 is also great, and its short length works in its favor. Radiata Stories is a *fun* game, despite its many flaws.

XBOX
 - Nope.

XBOX 360
 - Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
 - Blazblue: Continuum Shift
 - Super Street Fighter 4

Harmony of Despair is super fun, it just needs more content! Blazblue and Super Street Fighter are about equal, really. I've put more time into Super, but I would LIKE to put more into Blazblue. Super Characters = Gen/Makoto/Dudley/Dan, Blazblue = Lambda/Platinum.

WII
 - Super Smash Bros Brawl
 - Pokemon Battle Revolution
 - Arc Rise Fantasia

Brawl is a lot of fun... But I could definately go for a sequel! Pokemon is here almost entirely because of the really fun online, much better then Black/White's, at least at this point in time. Arc is here mostly because of a lack of playing other games. It's either that or Fire Emblem Wii, or No More Heroes, I guess. All of them are alright!

PS3
 - Nope.

New PC
 - Nope.
