To Excal - Regarding Persona Q, I'll just say this: spam status and ID, then things die. Naoto is MVP, and your opinion on Elizabeth and Margaret will be forever changed when you see them unable to move a finger because of silence or dies out of poison.
Persona Q truly is one of the unbalance and broken game ever.
And this is not considering things are already dying left and right with May Rain spamming combined with agility down spells.

Makers of a P4 remake/sequel making Naoto more broken? Surely you jest!

LISA - So Djinn dropped by my neck of Japan and we marathoned this. Got the "selfish" ending according the achievements. Failed the bike race in the last area and could not get past the bikers standing around in an adjacent cave, nor could I figure out what was going on with the Resort (though I flipped 3 switches of some kind?), so those two are gaps in my playthrough. Definitely missed one PC, maybe more, hard to tell. (If Fenrir knows how to solve these things it is ok to tell)

I don't really know how I feel about the game. On the one hand, the good. Atmospherically it was great, and at times so dark and depressing that it made me squirm, so good on it for that then. It left enough to the imagination that DJ and I were still talking about it when it finished, and I would like to see the alternate endings. Additionally, for a JRPG combat system most of the important fights were challenging enough that it required some thought and was pretty inoffensive even with the weird hybrid of Lufia 2/EB/DQ and LoL/FF6 Blitzes. One of the best parts, almost all of your choices matter, and are felt almost immediately (though less so in the long term if we're being perfectly honest).  The game itself is often an asshole to the player, which was frequently way more hilarious than when it was just talking about gross stuff and asking us to laugh about it.

Downsides... almost everything about the gameplay. This is a game that is an exercise in patience. This is a game that absolutely does not respect your time. This is a game that you can't even smoothly switch between characters on the Equip screen. This is a game that doesn't have a run button, which is still better than some...alternatives... but the fact that it only barely compares favorably to Lunar DS in that realm says a lot about how frustrating this game was to play. Yes, you get the bicycle toward the end of the first area. No, it did not make everything before that less tedious.  Menu navigation is atrocious, movement inelegant, and platforming frustrating.  Combat is probably the best part of the gameplay, and that's sad. It is a goddamn chore to play this game. To the point that while I think I like the story and I am interested in seeing the other endings, I will Absolutely. Fucking. Not. replay this game. Not right now anyway. It is just simply too much of a chore.  And while it is clearly an RPG maker game, for something being sold on a major distribution platform this level of polish is... well, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. For whatever it's worth I feel like I still got my money's worth for that 10 bucks, but goddamn was it obnoxious to play.

But damn, did it get dark at the end. But damn did it take a lot of risks at the end. But damn did it make me blow 30 turns just to not beat up the girl I was ostensibly trying to save, just to have to give in else be stuck in the battle forever. But damn did that make my stomach churn to do that.

All story, gameplay is mostly tedious and only fun in short bursts. Gross out humor one second, dark as hell the next goddamn breath. Perhaps too dark. The entire world being out to rape this one child REALLY made me uncomfortable and often just pissed me off and I didn't think it was particularly clever nor narratively rewarding. Sure, it helps you align more with your main character, who becomes more and more of an irredeemable, abusive cockgoblin as the game goes on (but at least he's not a child rapist!), but.... ugggggh. No. Just goddamn no. No no no no no no no no no. There is something to be said that the story was able to evoke that sort of visceral reaction from me, however... but that reaction had to be evoked by dipping into the most despicable thing that could happen to a child. Fuck no.)

Really don't know how I feel about the game. People who want to play a game should not play this. People with a proper moral compass should not play this. It is despicable and horrifying and wastes your time and frequently gives the player the middle finger and I think I may have really enjoyed it.

Dude, Zenny, have you tried remapping the controls, it took me like 20 minutes. This was the absolute worst thing.

In the resort island you can go up in one of the rooms to the floor above.
The biker gang is just a kidnapper group, like the blue rockets in the first area and the pretty boyz in the second, so they only become relevent if one of your PCs get kidnapped. They're also a little different than the two other groups, in a really cool way.

"Selfish" or "Selfless" isn't an ending thing, it's just related to how many arms you have left at the end. Which is kind of stupid to me because the arm-related choices are not about selfishness at all. (They'd be if the choice was Your arm or a PC dies, but it's Your Arm or I take all your items)

There are only two different endings, Joyless and Joyful, you get Joyful if you used joy at any point during the game. Joyless doesn't actually change the ending, you just get another little scene compared to Joyful that raises more questions than it answers. I didn't find it well written but I liked picking up a few new other things from the game in the second playthrough

- The extra scene shows that one mad scientist caused joy, and he's the trumpet dude you can see sometimes in the game like WA3 Beatrice. His fellow scientist assistant was Buzzo. We still don't know why Buzzo is pissed at Brad.
- The random janitor dude who scratches Lisa at the end was Sticky's abusive father.
- Rando, the nicest final boss in the world, was one of Brad's student, the poor one Brad lets enter his karate group for free. In one of the flashbacks you can see Brad lashed out on him in the past for whatever reason but he still felt no resentment. At the beginning of the game the 4 friends discuss going to Rando with the kid, which would have been the best decision, but Brad refuses.

Bravely Default: Fire crystal revived. Had a few resets on the giant floating spike-brain (cool boss design after a bunch of generic demon types) , but once I figured out the timing on its shield, and managed to avoid getting OHKOed by the HP drain, it got nuked.

Also picked up the other two optional jobs in that segment. Salve-Maker was straightforward but I like the decision to make the potions expert the psychopath serial killer. He was fun and the after-fight scene was great. The Ninja sidequest was friggin' awesome, though. Locked-room mystery out of nowhere! Gradually twigging to exactly what was going on was fun, and the fight was challenging enough without having any room for quick and luck-based wipes, which is good since replaying the whole lead-in would have been a complete pain.

Ranger/Spell Fencer/Salve-Maker/Valkyrie now, considering swapping Ringabel into Pirate or Ninja.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Sword Wielding Wraiths can bite me.  I also must confess that considering the game's setting, I was not expecting to fight a GIANT MECHANICAL SPIDER in the middle of nowhere.  I know this is Frankenstein's Castle (we will ignore how the book takes place in the 18th century, and this game is sometime in the somewhere between 1000 to 1300), but I'm pretty sure all iterations of the mad doctor and his machinery led to creating large artificial zombie men, and not giant robot archanids that shoot lightning at you and are charged by Tesla Coils.

...not that I'm complaining because hey, boss fight and not a total crap one, but still, MAKE SOME SENSE DAMN IT!

Alpha Sapphire: Terakkion refuses to give me a decent nature!  After him, all I have left are 2 of the Gerbils, Cresselia and Heatran for Soaring Legendaries.  I still haven't done Episode Delta but damn it I'm saving that for last because the final boss of that is level 80 so CLEARLY IT SHOULD BE LAST!

Smash Wii U: Finally got to playing this. Unlocked all but Doctor Mario, Duck Hunt Dog, and ROB as far as characters go.  Something about it is just more fun than the 3DS version despite being fundamentally the same game.  Not sure what it is...maybe it really is just playing Smash on a bigger screen allows for more enjoyment.  Heck, even just playing on the gamepad tends to be more positive than the 3DS.

...and the 3DS version is a pretty exceptional game as is overall.

FFX: It's a nice day for a white wedding. It's a nice day to...start agaiiiiiin!

How is Bevelle simultaneously the best and worst part of the game? Fookin' conveyor belts. Also I'd forgotten how much a giant douche Evrae is. Naturally X-potiony revenge was had at soonest opportunity.

I think at one point there was a conversation about Rikku's boobs but I've done my best to delete this from my memory.

~

Abyss Odyssey: So I beat this, for a given value of beaten. It turns out the answer to your problems is cow power. When I grow up, I'm going to Bovine University! Big bad is just sleeping not dead, though. I'm not sure if this is because default protag is trapped and not able to kill or if it's just the game's way of saying yeah you can replay indefinitely on same file, no big. It's still adding new bosses when I run another cycle, so I dunno. Will try beating it with someone else. I can now play as a naked sea sprite that throws jellyfish at people, so this was definitely worth my time. EDIT: next attempt a boss immediately jumped me at the front door. It got stuck in the floor, which was probably a good thing because the gamepad suddenly decided that up is down, X is Y, and A is B. What the hell, Logitech.

So I got a bunch of shit from the Steam sale and picked up Dark Souls 2 and I kind of feel like the dude who saw the Wire or Breaking Bad for the first time wanting to talk about it and everyone just laughs at you and then sets your car on fire. I wanted to be funny and do double Cestuses but then I found that Fen already did it.

GOD DAMN IT FEN YOU ARE THE SIMPSONS OF DARK SOULS.

whatever dude I still love you and punching things is awesome

I really wanted to do something else dumb with dual wielding but they don't let you mix and match in an interesting way. From Software, you are dead to me.

I'm up to the Gutter which is not bad but I have a godawful sense of direction so I kind of hate it. Not having a ton of trouble so far (I think the hardest thing so far has been me being very prideful about beating up some stupid piggies early on) but I am having to overcome some Dark Souls 1 muscle memory as well as the usual shameful Souls deaths. All in all, the controls feel so much better than DS1. The game on PC is fucking gorgeous and it is super smooth like butter so this is probably the only thing I will play for the next few months. This has made me look forward to Bloodborne but I will have absolutely no time to play that when it comes out.

Has anyone looked at Lords of the Fallen? It looks like a grimdarkdudebrowhatevertheequivalentoffantasyspacemarineasshole version of Dark Souls which could be okay or bad. I hear some people actually like its combat more than the Souls game in some ways but everything else seems to fall short. It's $20 right now for PC.

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance - I grabbed this for cheap too and basically beat it in one sitting and the last fight remains the greatest thing I've seen in the past two years. Only Kojima depict a clash of ideologies so unsubtly.

I was also gifted Far Cry 4 which is apparently Far Cry 3 without the repulsive storyline so I'll be busy for a while. Also I have Dragon Age Inquisition aw fuck.

You might want to try to get to the Throne of the Ivory King DLC and farm up Bone Fist sometime Gourry.  That way you can become kung fu and shoot fireballs.

Ivory King DLC is not fucking around. It is post game content.
You can't really have a kung fu first playthrough honestly.

BTW Gourry I also already did dual whips my first time through
I'm sorry but I already did all the cool shit

I super wanted to do a dual whip thing too but you are some kind of Dark Souls hipster

Anyway yeah I am not sticking strictly to fistiSouls since I am now in the Shrine of Amana and I really needed to use bows.

Dude there's nothing funny about dual-wielding the caestus, pugilism is legitimately outstanding in Dark Souls 2. You strike fast with light weapons that can benefit excellently from multiple damage+ rings and hit a weakness on like every annoying enemy type. It's great and hands down my favorite way to play the game.

Powerstancing in general I think is the best addition of DS2, but it kinda depends on what weapons you're using. Generally it works as long you stick to two of the same basic weapon type, but some types work out cooler than others. Spears and rapiers I think are pretty boring because you're just poking with two weapons instead of one, but stuff like fist weapons/daggers/curved swords get some genuinely neat combos. There's also a small handful of weapons that get specific movesets only when powerstanced (see hadokens). I highly recommend powerstancing the Warped Sword for spinspinspin.

And jesus christ don't go anywhere near the DLC zones until you've comfortably stomped the maingame. They're so much meaner.

So, Xenoblade

Gonna be starting this back up today, but last time I ventured forth on my quest.  After, that is, going back into Colony 9 for a few more quests and trying out Gem Creation.  Kinda cool, but I already have more useful Gems than I can slot from collectapedia and I have plenty of room for more ethers, so I only made one and moved on.  Finished the cave, and got my first Monado Art, kinda nice overall though it is making the Monado even more of a plot dispenser than before.  Also, Shulk as Chosen One, guess I shouldn't be surprised it happened but I had hope.  Oh so much hope.  Hopefully they handle it well, like it was for Fei and wasn't for Justin.

Persona Q

Finished the first dungeon.  Was right in that there was a boss there.  Turns out the boss can summon more mooks than SEES can handle.  Fortunately, the Investigation Squad shows up and brings their combat music with them.  I get an introductory battle with Minato and their core party (face it, who didn't use Chie, Yosuke, and Yukiko as the main party?) then boss time.

Once that's done, requests show up, Margaret displays why she's better at fusions than Elizabeth, and I get a lot of interaction between the two groups.  These guys clearly understand their market.  The other neat thing in all of this is that Yu is talking, he is a character here.  Pretty laid back, well spoken, and his place in the group dynamic fits with how P4 works.  He's clearly the leader, the group does seem to revolve around him not because he takes charge, but because he's insightful and says generally useful things.  Yosuke still gets the most lines, but Yu's the guy they all fall in behind.  Heck, there's even a S Link style scene where Yosuke's got something on his mind and Yu notices, gets him to talk about it, and talks him through it.

So, I think that confirms I'm gonna eventually play this game a second time just to see things from the other perspective and how they handle Minato.  Also, see if the music is handled differently since a lot of the soundtrack is P3 thus far.

As for actual plot, there still isn't much.  There's been hints that something sentient is behind all this.  Margaret has dropped some hints that she knows what happens at the end of P3, but it's not her place to change any of that so she's not telling any of the characters, or Elizabeth for that matter who she knows will take action even though she's not supposed to.  And now we seem to be going through a Shadowified version of what the P4 cast did for their cultural festival, because the writers enjoy making that cast suffer.  I may need to replay P4 because I can't remember that part of the cultural festival at all.  Regardless, all that anyone is willing to say about it is that they don't talk about it, and don't want to remember it.

Difficulty has stepped up, and now there's a nice balance between the ID skills and the elemental magics.  Heck, even the physical skills.  ID kills if it hits, but it can miss, even if it hits weakness.  And if it misses, no boost for you.  Elemental magic is basically guaranteed to hit, and will give you the boost.  Also, at this point it's getting widely available in the all hitting Ma- variants.  Finally, the physical skills are really shining against Bosses and FOEs where there aren't really weaknesses to hit, and a big ol sack of HP to hack through, so you want something that'll step up damage, but won't run out or get rid of healing reserves.  And Fuuka comes with this great party wide regen skill that makes recovering from the HP cost for physical skills a breeze.  So everything seems to have a place.  Still, Mahama is pretty awesome.

Finally, I saved the best for last.  Somehow, Koromaru has gotten even more adorable.  But, the scene you get when it's time for him to call an all-out attack?  Just this dog, sitting there, with knives in his mouth, and his tail wagging eagerly.  It's just, d'awwwwww.

Alpha Sapphire: Terrakion caught!  He has a +Speed -SpA nature I believe, with maxed IVs in Def, SDef, and SpA.  So why would I take it?  Because he's got "Practically maxed" IVs in Attack and Speed (as in, he has 148 Attack when 149 is maximum at level 50), which after all these crappy natures or "Good nature but awful stats", I'll take what I can live with a Terrakion that is like 1 less Attack and speed than ideal.

...really crap HP IVs though, but whatever, he's a physical sweeper, not a tank.

FFX: I'd forgotten that Kimahri was on chaperone duty throughout that whole underwater makeout session. I'd also forgotten that some of the victory poses are frankly a little terrifying with hasted characters, especially Wakka's. The man's got jackhammer hips!

Note to self: don't try stealing from magic urns again. They don't appreciate it.
