Bobby's In Deep- A recommendation from a friend. It's an ancient Madhouse work that involved a lot of key players. Masao Maruyama, Rin Taro, etc. Strange little slice of life story. One day a guy who is into motorcycles gets a letter from a girl saying that she recently saw an article about him in a magazine. They start to exchange letters. Hers are very long and eloquent, with a very romantic mindset. His letters back are incredibly short, almost concise to a fault. Meanwhile, you see snippets of his life. He's in high school, failing, doesn't get along with his parents. He ends up dropping out, moving out and getting a job after a very messy incident with his parents. The way he interacts, and the way the letters come off, you get the feeling that he's almost slightly autistic possibly. As the OVA proceeds though, you see him improve a bit with how he interacts with people. The ending is pretty sad though.
The animation is... well, high gear or low gear. It's either fairly well done stills, choppy in-between quality, or in the case of the final 5 minute motorcycle sequence, ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. Words can't describe. What starts off as a trippy, colorful yet melancholic ride turns into a fluid, black and white, pencil-only adreneline rush.
The whole package doesn't come off that well, but it's worth seeing for that last sequence alone. It almost comes off as one of those experimental films made by people who later made it big that wasn't very good, but you could see the start of a long career. Because well, it is.
