Tournaments / Re: Nyarlathotep's Dungeon: The Return! (Week 6)
« on: April 29, 2008, 04:28:54 AM »
Team Laggy | Timelord, Jerin, FFT Ninja, Mia, Nall
[Floor 2b]
Team Laggy vs. Lorenta, Jelanda, Shiho, Mystina - TE someone, kill someone else, VP mages weep.
Team Laggy vs. FF1 Knight, FFT Knight, FF3 DS Knight - Magic Break is 61% and only 50% mMP damage. Regardless, even if you see that as being a problem (I don't, TL should have 50ish JP since he starts with 40, TE is 5, OD is 10 and he has infinite during OD), there's always TimeLeap, which is 2 JP and 100% success rate to lock FFT Knight from doing anything. Or consequently speedbust him with TE and blitz him instead - he's no tank like FF1 Knight is. FF3 DS Knight sucks, FF1 Knight is completely ST damage that can be healed away. Slog through, next.
Team Laggy vs. FF1 Black Mage, FFT Wizard, Vivi - TE out Vivi, blitz FFT Wizard (ahaha that durability) and mock FF1 BM.
Team Laggy vs. Lucius, Serra, Renault - More TEing. Opposition lacks any sort of offense to be scary, not enough to keep up with both Jerin and Mint healing.
Team Laggy vs. Ramza and Vandalier Ash - OD if you see him having the JP, but he doesn't even need it - opening TE on Ash ends this fight there and that's that.

Team Yakumo | Yuri2, Edgar, Claude, Aeris (Restore Materia), Mint
[Floor 3b]
Team Yakumo vs. Nino - Noiseblaster lock, heal up from her first attack (remember, she hit everyone, so he does need multiple turns for this), AirAnchor and laugh.
Team Yakumo vs. Alakazam and Golem - Opening Psychic is fruitless, since it doesn't kill, Golem is too slow to take advantage of it and Noiseblaster owns both handily. In fact, because it's so fruitless, I don't see the opposition bothering at all (since it builds up Aeris' limit gauge) - instead Alakazam throws up Reflect and makes them waste some more resources. Kinda fruitless due to Tools being infinite but eh.
Team Yakumo vs. Flik and Viktor - See above. Edgar's really ruling here. They're better served to not act at all, or go for ST damage and force some healing.
Team Yakumo vs. Nina1 and Yuber - Hm. Nina1 opens with Hold on Edgar, then promptly gets splatted and Yuber... yeah, not enough. They can only delay the inevitable. This pair lacks any offense to be scary.
Team Yakumo vs. Cray, Alma and Nils - EDIT: Okay, I forgot both MBarrier and Ultima are MT now. That's.. actually quite scary. Alma's status immune and goes before Edgar to set up MBarrier on her entire team. Edgar .. probably can only confuse Nils, since Cray has resistance and he can't do his magic on Alma. Plus, Nils' evasion actually makes it somewhat difficult for him to be hit out of confusion by the other team, and since all he can do is sing (which he'll be singing on Yak's team!) he won't ever knock himself out of it.

That said, the enemy team's actually in a bit of trouble, since the only surefire way to knock Nils out of confusion is Ultima (which is ITE, IIRC) and that would sting their entire side. They can try to gamble with Alma's physical or Cray's Quake but they're not guaranteed hits and risk wasting turns. Cray and Alma simply going on the offensive is going to guarantee limits for Aeris, since all their offense is MT, and I don't think a Cray physical + Ultima is killing anyone. Meanwhile, everyone else on Yak's team is pounding away at one of the opposition, and as walltastic as MBarrier is, I don't think it's enough to drain them out. If their attacks happen to knock Nils out of confusion, Edgar simply reapplies. Tentative pass for now.

Team Super| Rika, Aeonless Yuna, Palom, Porom, Onix
[Floor 4a]
*Healing -> Damage Reversal, status reverse, etc.
*All resources normally used for Healing are infinite.
Team Super vs. Fei and Bart
Team Super vs. Rosa and Cecil
Team Super vs. Shion, MOMO and KOS-MOS
Team Super vs. Robo and Frog
Team Super vs. Rune and Chaz - Open with Saner/ID everyone works just fiiiine. *punts Rika*

Ice wave + sleep spam probably owns her.

It's been a while, but I've seen Dhoulmagus1's AI documented in a LLG topic on the DQ8 board and I am 90+% sure Eyes Gleam could only be used as a lone attack, i.e. never doubled with anything.

Seeing as it is 50% accurate against Psy equips, it is as such completely useless here, even if it can indeed last longer than a turn (which I've never seen).

Not having played DQ8 but having seen movies of it, I direct you to this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTI5f3D4N9s

At 6:44 Dhoulmagus doubles with an attack and Eyes Gleam.

Psi stuff is another thing entirely (isn't it 100% and could arguably go through resistance? I'm not qualified to speak, but that's what the stat topic says.)

1128
I swore never to use PS4 again. Also no 4s this time around.

Terra (3.5), FFT Chemist (3.0), Geno (3.0), FFT Time Mage (0.5), Mint (Free)

EDIT: Okay with Neph's changes I want to go for broke and try something crazier. Add no revival to the above conditions.

TimeLord (3.5), Jerin (3.0), FFT Ninja (2.5), Mia (1), Nall (0)

It's the TL three-step, and follow me: Eclipse, Twister, Leap. One to rape puny PCs, one to double a dose of damage, one to let a boss never get a turn. And of course, the grand finale of Overdrive can never go wrong.

Next we have Jerin. The Jerin-three step goes as follows: MT healing, MT damage, and speed. Mirror and Trick certainly don't hurt either in case troublesome nasty things come to plague our merry fellows. She's also quite durable for a support character, and is the party go-to in case things went horribly wrong last fight.

Ninja is our man, and he does things the manly way. Slice, dice, a drop of Don't Act here and there. FFT equip options are loaded to bear. Hit things hard and fast is a man's job; good to balance against the women and mystic snobs. When he gets Tricked out, it's even worse.

Gentle, lovely Mia, she waves her (speed-boosting wind) cane and makes flames and ice go boom. Supplementing Jerin's MT damage, she's got the speed to quickly toss her formidable buffs as well in case they come in needed. Ice Shell may save many a life from being snuffed out by those with spite.

And Nall, of course, makes sure our team doesn't succumb to those nasty nasty gang-up tactics. We can't have that, now, can we?

House only has 9 people in it right now. Even if everyone who's a tentative right now showed up, there'd still be enough room. Unless there's another jump of people planning to attend, it should accomodate everyone who hasn't already declared alternative housing.

I'm not staying at Gate's overnight on Wednesday in all likelihood so don't worry so much about that, especially if room is a concern. If international people want to book at the beachhouse, that's fine, just say so (I have them listed at Gate's as he said that people flying overseas get priority to save on housing costs.)

Grefter, exact arrival and departure times would be coo'.

EDIT: Though I just noticed you're flying into Vancouver. On uhh July 13th? (Remember, con date is July 24-27, Hal and Alex are only staying till Aug 4 because they, along with Snow and I, plan to do stuff in SF)

I am either presuming that you have had a sudden urge to tour British Columbia with elves and beavers or you got a date mixup. Hopefully the former, and that you also have transportation plans to SF itself from there.

As far as departure goes, yeah just make sure that you've got things to do from July 27-Aug 4. I doubt any of us other folks staying past the con mind the company but we won't be staying at QR/Gate, soo if you are planning on having company around go chat it up with 'em and Hal.

To Niu, and prospective others and those already confirmed - if you're not opting for the beach house and have alternate plans for housing, please be sure to state this... like... as soon as you're sure, so we have an idea on space, the share of the rent, and whatnot.

NEB: I'm sure I (or more likely QR) can take a broader look at hotels, but unless you're willing to drive to the con gathering place on a daily basis, finding a reasonably priced room isn't likely in the area, period. The particular Lighthouse quoted is extravagant due to being literally waterfront, yes, but expect at least upwards of 100-120 even for inland locations, and probably a 20 minute drive at the least.

TH04 - LLS (Lotus Land Story)
* Story Mode: Cleared Normal/Hard/Lunatic with MarisaA.
* Extra Mode: Cleared with MarisaA.
Notable accomplishments: Managing to kill Lunatic Stage 4 Reimu with only losing 1 life.

Thoughts: LLS, despite being a PC-98 games, might well be one of the most generously designed games in the series, managing to be challenging enough and still sane to clear even on the higher settings. It manages to do this by having a very lenient extra-life reward system, giving them in fountains from both score and boss drops. It also features the original MAAAAAAAASTER SPARKU, and will retain this honor till the end of days.

TH05 - MS (Mystic Square)
* Story Mode: Cleared Normal with Reimu and Mima; Hard/Lunatic with Mima.
* Extra: Cleared with Reimu.
Notable accomplishments: Clearing Lunatic, period. No really. Yumeko cheats.

Thoughts: Lauded as the hardest game of the entire series due to a brutal 4-5-6 stage sequence and a distinct lack of extra lives, Mystic Square otherwise behaves pretty identically to LLS in terms of gameplay and whatnot, although it introduces the relatively-broken Mima (and the pathetic Yuka. What the heck happened to her transition to a PC?) Also, Yumeko owns Sakuya in her sleep as a knife-wielding maid. Really.

TH06 - EoSD (Embodiment of Scarlet Devil)
* Easy: Have never attempted. It ending on stage 5 sort of turns me off from trying. It does house Icicle Fall -Easy-, though.
* Normal: Cleared on all chars.
* Hard: Cleared on all chars. Trying to pull off an NB on this someday.
* Lunatic: Cleared on all chars.
* Extra: Cleared on all chars. The only (non-MoF) Extra that has eluded an NF or NB from me so far.
Notable accomplishments: NFNB ReimuA Normal, NF ReimuA Hard, NF ReimuA Lunatic.

Thoughts: Probably the hardest of the traditional Window Touhou games (though MoF has an argument to me), it plays on raw dodging skills much more than the pattern-reading that becomes more prevalent in the two sequels that follow it. There's a glaring lack of polish, but it definitely has its charm and is nostalgic for me to return to.

TH07 - PCB (Perfect Cherry Blossom)
* Easy: Cleared with SakA, have never returned to it.
* Normal: Cleared on all chars.
* Hard: Cleared on all chars. NB on this is a -bitch-, but I'm trying.
* Lunatic: Cleared on all chars but ReimuB. NF is horrifying, making the challenge far, far harder than EoSD Lunatic NF, but is my current project (with ReimuA to boot.)
* Extra: Cleared on all chars.
* Phantasm: Cleared on all chars.
Notable accomplishments: NFNB ReimuA Normal, NF ReimuA Hard, NFNB ReimuA Extra, NF ReimuA Phantasm.

Thoughts: PCB is the game that nearly everyone starts out with. It's pretty, it's got great music, the polish shines, it's got reasonable spellcards without overdoing raw hax (like EoSD) or pure pattern (like IN) and is generally a great game that showcases the entire series' strengths. I find myself struggling to turn back to play on it, though, as it just feels so slow compared to the other games.

TH7.5 - IaMP (Immaterial and Missing Power)
* Story Mode: Cleared Normal with Patchy (HAH!) and Lunatic with Patchy (HAH! take 2) and Sakuya (considerably more noteworthy).
* LagAMP: Die to Snow. All the time. And everyone else in #gensokyo.
Notable accomplishments: Haha you're kidding me right.

Thoughts: IaMP is a fighting game based on the Touhou series, rather than the traditional danmaku... or so you'd think. That is, until you see the projectiles flying everywhere and the Lunatic Story mode spellcards and go "wait a second, that's danmaku in a fighting game." Yes. Yes it is. By grace of the graze mechanic, these feats are actually possible and not utterly overpowering, although one round with Ruka's Patchouli may make you believe otherwise. Like all fighting games, you likely either get into it or you don't, and although I dislike high tier play (where, again, like with most fighting games it gets heavily into comboing/air looping ability), it's definitely worth a spin for casual fun every once in a while.

TH08 - IN (Imperishable Night)
* Easy: uh I think I ran it like once. IN Easy is the (9) of difficulties.
* Normal: Cleared on all chars. NFNB ReimuA is the one thing I may try to finish at some point.
* Hard: Cleared on all chars.
* Lunatic: Cleared with Border Team. No interest in trying it with anyone else.
* Extra: Cleared on all chars. (Yes, even the likes of solo Alice and Youmu. IN Extra is broke'd, and not in a good way.)
Notable accomplishments: NF ReimuA Normal, NF ReimuA Hard.

Thoughts: IN is the bastard child of the series, the game which went just a little too far. ZUN, no doubt encouraged by the pretty pattern success of PCB, decided to take it one step further, and as a result almost every spellcard or attack in IN is patterned to a fault, making it primarily a game of memorization and practice-till-you-get-movement-perfect rather than rewarding creative movement or raw hax. It's still got its good phases, and the spellcard practice feature is praised by many, but it's definitely not to my taste. (Stage 6a over 6b anyday!)

TH09 - IN (Phantasmagoria of Flower View)
* Story Mode: Cleared Lunatic with Aya, Medicine, Shiki, Reimu, and Lunasa.
* Extra: Cleared on Komachi and none else.
Notable accomplishments: Lasting for over four minutes for one round in a Shiki/Shiki mirror match in match mode against the AI. That was something.

Thoughts: PoFV is the versus mode of modern Touhou. I don't really care much for the story mode or the Extra mode, both of which go against a fairly boring AI, but the sheer hax that erupts from PoFV netplay is absolutely hilarious. Character balance basically does not exist (the gap between low and high tier are massive, and broken miko is broken), but this isn't so bad if you're just going in to have some fun. Better yet, it has a much lower learning curve than the other games - you just, uh, gotta know how to dodge! Have had great rounds with Alex, Yakumo and Sage, amongst others.

TH09.5 - StB (Shoot the Bullet)
* Scenes: Cleared everything Stages 1-10, missing EX-3 and EX-6.

Thoughts: StB is weird. Starring my avatar rather than Reimu, the whole concept of using the camera to eliminate bullets is... interesting. This mechanic, of course, is an excuse for ZUN to code in some of the most brutal spellcards in the entire series, including some that are flat-out impossible (Patchy's cards come to mind) in normal danmaku. I never really got into it aside from completion for the sake of completion, though some cards are awesome and I hope they get seen in the future (EX-8! EX-8!!!)

TH10 - MoF (Mountain of Faith)
* Easy: Cleared on ReimuB.
* Normal: Cleared on ReimuB.
* Hard: Cleared on ReimuA, B, C.
* Lunatic: Cleared on ReimuB.
* Extra: Cleared on ReimuB.
Notable accomplishments: NB ReimuB Normal.

Thoughts: MoF is the newest game in the series at the time of this post, and it has its good and bad points. ZUN rehauled the entire engine for the game, so there are some glaring flaws, like Marisa's hitbox and the hilarious MarisaBug. There's also no option to change default lives, and the spellcard bomb system was replaced was a universal Gradius option-like bomb that consumes power. The innovations were mostly good, although the entire game feels rushed, and it is quite brutal on raw difficulty - you really gotta be willing to tap that bomb button a lot, even on randoms, which are the most threatening by far of any Touhou game. As you can tell from my clears, I really don't like anyone but ReimuB for the game. >_>

As revived from the last board. A place to mark your progress in Touhoudom and general shenanigans.

All of the Touhou games can be downloaded off of Hal's fserv on IRC. Just do /ctcp Yukari-sama has Tohou! (For those seeking the awesome music of the series, /ctcp Yukari-sama Tohoumusik will get you your needs as well.)

Those wanting to find Touhoutalk are always welcome to stop by at #gensokyo (on dejatoons), where you'll find both other DLers and people from branching Touhou communities. IaMP and Mahjong are currently popular games of request, as is PoFV.

Feel free to steal my format or somethin'.

Okay, so housing report!

The biggest downside was that we weren't actually able to get into the house and take a look in the interior, because apparently someone had rented it out the day we went and are staying there for three days. Oops. That said, we did get a good look at the general area, and have an idea of the house's spaciousness.

THE GOOD:
- The house's view is spectacular. Here's a screenie standing on the street in front of the house: (Yes, that beach is within reasonable walking distance. It's not the most private beach ever but it's something.) There's a balcony to boot.
(By the way, do you see that weather? Fog in the distance, generally lookin' a bit chilly? That will be our weather in July. Dress WARMLY, folks. >_>)
- It's located within reasonable walking distance (15 minutes or so, through a hill and some lights) to a shopping center which includes a Safeway, Starbucks, deli, donut stop, Quinzo Subs, etc. etc. basically you're going to have no issues getting food or essentials.
- Speaking of beach, beach is indeed there and about the same distance of walk. Taco Bell right next to it too if you get the munchies.
- A bit over a mile away is the Seabowl Bowling Alley. Too far to walk (it involves highway travel) but the ease of access of driving y'all over there is a perk.
- Air hockey table. What more could you ask for? Doesn't suck up your quarters too!
- Distributed wi-fi throughout the entire house. That means that anyone hauling along their laptops should be able to get net (or desktops, if someone is generous enough.)
- Laundromat is available within the house.
- Four TVs: one in the main entertainment area (right next to the kitchen, and the gathering place in general, I think - here's a screenshot) and three in the bedrooms. Hopefully the cables aren't locked in so they can be utilized for console use - we weren't able to check, but the question will be asked of the realtor.

THE BAD:
- The house is on a hill. While this makes for a good view it's somewhat of a hassle to walk up and down it to get anywhere. Not a major concern but one worth noting, and when QR and I pick you up and drop you off we WILL be doing it at the base, because driving up that hill is a pain and mildly scary to park on.
- From a brief conversation with the folks who were renting the place out, while it will accommodate the projected 11-14 folks that will stay here, there will definitely be couch and floor sleeping involved. Think the count is something like seven beds total, although there's plenty of space to just sleep, it'll be a bit crowded. In the plus side, it's still far more space than DLC1 or 2 attendees reputedly ever got.
- Food access IS a fair walk and not a five minute detour. Group grocery/food trips may not be a bad idea since, unless you're aiming to get your exercise in, it's a bit more than casual to head down there and grab a sub.
- QR owned me in Uno. Actually she owned us all in Uno. ;_;

For those who aren't interested in staying at the house and want to make hotel arrangements: there's a Best Western Lighthouse in the same general area, also right in front of the beach and basically the best spot to be if you still want to be close to where the majority of the con is going to take place (likely the beach house). Stipulation: it's $150 a night, and that's a quote now (website says $190, easily could go up past 200 when summer rolls along.) As far as price efficiency goes, beachhouse has hotel beat squarely.

If there's something I didn't cover here that you'd like clarification on, feel free to poke. Again, I echo the need to know what everyone's housing plans are so we can set this up - the earlier the better.

Join #dlc3 if you want to discuss con specifics and activities.

Okay, to recap:

Housing conditions!

So people know where they are. If something seems off here or you have your own plans, it'd be good to make us all aware of them.

3 @ QR/Gate's house: QuietRain, Gatewalker, Taishyr
9 @ beach house: superaielman, Meeplelard, Shale, Ciato, CmdrKing, Monkeyfinger, Excal, Soppy, Grefter
... plus Yakumo, OK, Ephraim, and Niu, if they make it
4 @ alternative housing: Halbarad, Laggy, Alex, Dark Holy Elf (?)
2 @ family/own housing: Xeroma, metroid composite, Andrew
- Confirmed count of con attendees: 19 (23 tentative)

Transportation!

I assume most if not everyone will be flying into SFO (something about crazy Canucks who might be driving down here though, who knows). It is an easy, leisurely 15-minute drive from the airport to QR/Gate's place. Both QR and myself will be providing ferry service. Obviously, as you get your itineraries, be sure to post them here - I will update this to keep track of arrival/departure times. We can fit 5 in a car each run, so we might wait a bit if your arrival time coincides closely with someone else to save some gas. Their house will be used a staging area where you'll go where you need to (usually the beach house, which is also very close nearby.)

THINGS TO POST:
- Arrival and departure times. Dates, too - some folks are staying longer and some are staying earlier, I know that much.
- Cell phone numbers. If you don't want them public, please PM them to Gate/myself at the very least so we can get ahold of you in case things get awkward at customs or whatnot. (For whatever reason if you need my own number, it is 707-812-2550)
- Where you're actually coming in from. Alternatives from here include OAK (Oakland International) and SJC (San Jose International), both a bit farther out from SFO but pick-ups are possible. If you're insane enough to actually be training or busing in, let us know details.

Arrivals:
Saturday, 7/12
- 1:53pm Grefter (YVR)

Wednesday, 7/23
- 8:55pm - superaielman (SFO)

Thursday, 7/24 Con Starting Day
- 12:06pm - Meeplelard (SFO)
- 1:12pm - Halbarad, Alex (SFO)

Departures:
Sunday, 7/27 Con Ending Day

Monday, 7/28
- 10:10pm - superaielman, Meeplelard (SFO)

Saturday, 8/2
- 4:39pm - Halbarad, Alex (SFO)

Monday, 8/4
- 5:45pm - Grefter (SFO)

Planned activities and fooding!

This is very much subject to change and a rough outline of what's been proposed so far. We need input here - join #dlc3 and chip in if you have ideas or want to plan something. Gaming and general hijinks (board games, real life Mafia, whatever) are a given.

The main con area will likely be the beach house, with Gate's place used as an alternative/staging area if the need arises.

Thursday, July 24th
- Most con members will be arriving today. The day will mainly consist of getting people where they need to be, aiel tormenting, and setting up at the house/unpacking/what have you.
- Food will likely largely be fast food with everyone grabbing a bite when they need to. There's enough to eat within easy walking distance, IIRC.
- Aside from general gaming and ish, the house (should it be decided upon) does have access to a beach less than a mile's walk away. This may be a good place to kill time in the evening.

Friday, July 25th
- Bowling alley nearby. This seems to be a DLC tradition, and it would be a good afternoon's activity.
- Dinner at the beachhouse, with chef Gatewalker presiding. The menu item is said to be his specialty. Don't miss out. Please bring $5 a person to cover grocery expenses, since he'll be making enough for 20+ people with leftovers. (Shale and Tai have agreed to assist in cooking!)

Saturday, July 26th
- The crazy people over at Soulriders are having their own meet around this time, and have proposed a link-up of the two communities on this day. The more the merrier.
- Dinner dining out at a local restaurant in Pacifica (TBA as food preferences and whatnot come up). Good chance SR folks will accompany us. Budget accordingly for how much you plan to eat, though it likely won't surpass 15-20 bucks a head (with drinks and frills).

Sunday, July 27th
- Clean-up at Gate's. This is something that didn't happen at DLC2, and we'd like to make sure it does this time, especially with an even higher turnout. Do your share!
- Departures as people come and go, again with QR and myself providing transportation to whatever airport you need to be at.
- If you plan to stick around past the 27th for whatever reason, let us know - a good number of us are (mainly Camp Hal and of course the local Gatewalkers) and having some more group outings would be cool.

Other things of note:
- Several other ideas are floating around (fighting game tourney, music quiz, DL jeopardy, etc.) that we'll likely put in the schedule as details are hashed out.
- If you have any ideas for group outings or have your own personal inquiries as to what's there to do in the SF area, feel free to drop me a line or stop by in #dlc3.

I'll be accompanying Gate and QR this Sunday to check out the house. Stay tuned for status report, etc.

Grefter: Again, if at all possible and not outrageous in price range, pick SFO. It is by far the closest and easiest access to transportation to where you'll want to be.

LAX is infinitely inferior to SFO, which is likely the best airport on the West Coast. That said, it's usually costlier to fly direct into SFO, but I'd be amazed if you couldn't do it.
