DLCon X: Bay Area, the Revenge of the Pacific Ocean, will be July 30 - August 2 in the San Francisco Bay Area-ish.
Other topics of interest:
DLC X - Travel (http://www.rpgdl.com/forums/index.php/topic,6680.0.html)
DLC X - Activities (http://www.rpgdl.com/forums/index.php/topic,6710.0.html)
Housing:
We’ll be staying at Redwood House in El Cerrito (http://www.vrbo.com/206270), 6506 Eureka Ave., easily accessible by BART (local train), bus, and car. (This is the same place we stayed at for DLC 5.) Lots of sleeping space, decent areas for gathering and playing games of the video and board variety, walking distance to groceries, video games, clothes, restaurants, and a short drive away from the bowling alley and similar delights. It’s a 20 minute train ride to San Francisco. Plus it has a grill that hopefully we can actually use this time!
The house will be open July 29 through August 3. The cost per person depends on how many people stay at the house, but if 15 people stay it’s $215.
Driving:
Very limited, as much because I hate driving as because there really aren't many places that are easier to drive to than take a bus or train to. Nevertheless, I'll be looking for a couple people who want to help for the day or two we'll need to go off the bus paths.
It's possible to use local car-share services (Uber, Lyft, Sidecar) as well, though I'm not certain how well-served the area around the house is.
So... who's coming?
Here!

Coming!~
-
Yes yes yes.
-
Yaay!~
-
Definitely!
-
In, of course.
-
Pencil me in for this.
-
Oh, hey, a san fran con I don't have to host. :in:
-
Pencil me in as a maybe.
First week of June would work best for me. My lease is up at the end of June, and would probably be moving back to NJ or somewhere the fuck out of Florida, so the earlier before that the better.
-
Solid Maybe. As usual I'll let you know whether I'll be coming hours, perhaps even days before the con starts.
-
Probably in, bay area is fun for cons.
-
My current feeling is "okay if I have to quit and get another job afterwards I'll be there". I mean, #10 mang.
-
Pencil me in as a maybe.

You want a hand moving Bro?
-
Tentative yes. Already have commitment July 17 and 18 and the surrounding days are likely to be eaten up as well.
-
I am interested. But will confirm nothing unless/until I manage to acquire a passport and a method of getting down there.
-
Will almost certainly be there.
-
Hey, I'll try to swing it. Does anyone live in LA, btw?
-
I'll be attending.
LA as Los Angeles or Louisiana?
-
Los Angeles.
-
Niu and I live in L.A./LA adjacent areas.
-
I definitely don't give a fuck about missing independence day. #canada
I probably don't give a fuck about missing E3 either. Didn't even bother going this year. (GDC you can pry from my cold dead hands, on the other hand). Maybe other people care about E3 though.
-
As a note, travel costs during July 4th weekend are much higher than the surrounding weeks usually.
-
E3 is something I might have to do, depending on where in the release cycle my products are. I say "have to" though I love the spectacle of the show and wouldn't mind a reason to go down to SoCal and probably justify visiting friends and (Andrew's) family without having to pay my own airfare.
As for 4th of July travel, I wouldn't say they're much higher than the surrounding weeks, but they definitely are higher. The decision comes down to whether we want a June con or a later July con. It's all summer fares either way, whee.
Poll
1. Who prefers a June con?
- June 4-7
- June 11-14 (potential conflict)
- June 18-21 (potential conflict - also Father's Day)
- June 25-28
2. Who prefers a July con?
- July 2-5 (Fourth of July)
July 9-12 (hosts at SDCC)- July 16-19 (potential conflict)
- July 23-26
- July 30-Aug 2
-
I am against 7/4 con.
As we might run into potential heavy traffic.
-
Late June would be my preference; it's weirdly harder for me to get away from work during summer school months (July-August). I'm not yet 100% sure I'll even be teaching then but if there are no other major preferences that's certainly my vote.
-
Sounds good to me!~ :)
I would like to tie spending times with various people, friends, while I'm over, where and when possible~
-
As far as I know, any time is good for me. Dunno if that'll change.
-
Early June my preference, stated the reasons already. Dunno the feasibility of going otherwise.
-
Holy shit I'm alive.
So...the later in July, the better (or August). I get married end of May, then honeymoon/moving through early-mid-late June/early July. She finishes her residency end of June, so it's really running tight up against everything. Having said that, 10th con, and I've had to miss the last few because of money/schedule/FUCKING CAR, so I will to whatever I can to make it if possible. As long as it's in July, there is a possibility I can make it, higher likelihood the later it is. So...
July 16-19 (potential conflict)
July 23-26
July 30-Aug 2
Those are the best dates for me, preferably the July 30 - August 2 dates.
-
At the moment, all the dates are pretty much the same to me.
-
Tentative yes. Already have commitment July 17 and 18 and the surrounding days are likely to be eaten up as well.
Yay, new person at a con.
Also don't especially have an opinion on when.
-
Slight preference July 23-26 or July 30-Aug 2. I already have existing commitments July 16-19 and June 21 and am open to any other dates.
-
There is no way I could do it July 4th weekend. If we go with something else then I'll do my best to make it this year.
-
I don't know if I can get the time off but if I can, late July or August would work best. I really wanna come, so put me down for a maybe depending on the date. If I do come all the way from Japan, I'm hoping I can hang out with you English speakers for a week before going back to Glorious Nippon.
-
Alright, it looks like the preference is for late July/early August overall.
Run-off:
- July 23-26
- July 30-August 2
If you had to choose one of the two, which?
-
July 30-August 2 is a long weekend here, so if I am working during tthe summer that is a much more feasible weekend to leave town during.
-
Pencil me in as a maybe. On-call work + need a passport make it difficult to certain of ability to attend, but I would very much like to make it to at least 1 DLcon.
-
Definitely the latter preferred, but I am probably good for either
-
Personally would prefer something in July/August myself. I am pretty flexible, but that feels like it'd just be easier for me to work with.
-
Didn't notice this topic was up already.
I will come this year if I have to hitch-hike. As I'm reasonably financially successful right now, I shouldn't have to.
-
I don't have any objection to late July/early August either~
-
Ok, I might have one weekend that will be a no go; sister's wedding and all. They haven't set an exact date yet, so I can't say what that one weekend is, but just getting this out there that I'm only a "maybe" until dates confirmed.
-
Oh yeah, I have a family wedding too: I absolutely can not come the weekend of July 11th-12th.
-
Both selections work for me. In the spirit of the question, I'm choosing July 30- Aug 2.
Changing maybe to 99% certain I will attend.
-
July 30 - Aug 2 would work out for me.
-
Okay! There's definitely enough support for it, so
DLC X will be July 30-August 2!
I'll get started on the housing junk, create another thread for it. Hooray for the first concrete detail!
-
This sounds like something I'd love to attend, if I can! It would be wonderful to meet all you guys. :D
That said, I don't know if I'll be able to afford to go at this time, and whether or not you guys are cool with me being there given you guys don't know me all that well for the most part.
-
Don't worry, some of us were there for the first DLCon, wherein nobody ACTUALLY knew each other really either. What got the introverted ubernerds through? Why, Smash Bros.! And as luck would have it, a new one came out recently that everyone will be eager to play.
-

Haha. Count on Smash Bros. or Mario Kart to start a party! I played Melee and Brawl to death! Well, more Melee than Brawl..
I'll definitely see what I can do and let you guys know if I can come much closer to the date!
-
Just coming in to say that there's an 80% chance of my black out date being the weekend of July 2nd. It's not confirmed but there's a high possibility that's going to be the date. Any weekend other than that is good, so yeah, if doing July 30th to August 2nd, I should be good.
Also, yeah, ES, if you want to go, by all means! Speaking of Smash, cannot be emphasized enough how much DLCon needs to play 8 Player Smash, especially with Captain Falcon only!
-
So Jenna officially volunteers to help with driving. Throwing it in here so you guys have it confirmed~

FALCONE.. PUUUUNCH!!!!
Ah man, the good ol' days of Melee.. haha!
If I can go, I will, it would be a tremendous pleasure to finally meet all of you!
-
High chance of me being there.
-
There is a reasonable chance that we will be bringing a tagalong friend, the same one that came to San Francisco with us to Minimeet a couple years ago.
-
So... how do y'all feel about revisiting that El Cerrito house we stayed in a few DLCs back?
http://www.vrbo.com/206270
It's by far the cheapest and biggest option near public transportation. It limits our need for cars, gives us easy access to a shopping center with a grocery store and various other amenities, has easy parking for when we do need cars, is near-ish to my and Andy's place, and comes out to -- if all people currently confirmed stay in the house -- less than $200/person for the stay.
I'm still looking at other options too.
-
I'd be down for it. I still have to confirm I can get the time off to go, though. Since the date leans in favor of my being able to go, there's a good probability it'll work out, but I won't know for sure until at least March...
-
That was one of the more ideal spots because yeah, size + location was great.
-
seconding Meeple
-
99% sure I'll be booking the El Cerrito place. As soon as I have, I'll let everyone know the final cost for the stay.
Please let me know if you don't think you'll be staying in the house. There are hotel options if, for some reason, you'd rather do that. It's gonna be tough to beat what the house costs. If you have money concerns but are still interested, PM me and we can have a chat. If you're planning on arriving before or leaving after the time the house is open, also let me know!
-
I am planning on coming and would plan on staying in the house. Just posting since I noticed my name wasn't on the lists in the first post.
-
I booked fights tonight.
-
I have to withdraw myself, unfortunately
-
I will probably stay in a nearby hotel(along with anyone else who wants to split the room with me), but will still chip in for the house.
-
Getting my passport next week, then arranging travel. I am almost certainly going to be there.
-
House is officially booked. (http://www.vrbo.com/206270) I'm putting the details in the opening post.
If 15 people stay, it's a bit under $215/person. House is open Wednesday night (July 29) through Tuesday night (August 4) so there's coverage for people staying a bit before and a bit after.
Please, please let me know if you aren't staying at the house, will have trouble paying for it, or anything else. The sooner I know, the easier it is to deal with it.
-
Fl
Out for dlc, sadly.
-
Nick and I will both be coming, and we'll stay in the house.
-
I need confirmations from people that will be staying at the house. If we have too few, I'm going to have to cancel it so no one gets stuck with $400 bills. Out of courtesy to people planning on the house, I need to make this decision sooner rather than later.
Please let me know by April 30 whether you are staying in the house.
(If you're marked "- house" on page 1, you're confirmed.)
-
I would be in the house.
-
House for me.
-
We'll stay in the house
-
Not 100% sure on my attendance but I will not be in the house.
-
I'm not sure if I'll be staying in the house, but I will chip in some money for it.
-
I'll be in the house.
-
I'll be in the house, though there is a small chance I may need a bit of financial help. I'll know more closer to the day.
-
Not 100% sure on my attendance but I will not be in the house.
I'm not sure if I'll be staying in the house, but I will chip in some money for it.
Not suspicious. In no way suggesting that Laggy and Tallychu are going to stay up for 72 hours straight mainlining caffeine and ramen doing some kind of Akagi LARP while everyone else sleeps.
0% chance of this being complete and total reality.
-
I'm no longer sure I'll be able to make it, a lot of unexpected financial issues cropped up, and stuff, but I at least would also be willing to chip in for the house at least :)
-

-
Surprise change: I'm in for DLC and the house.
-
Ashley, can I get the address for this place? The site is horrible.
-
No clue. How precise do you need to be? It's roughly in the Lincoln Ave x Liberty St area in El Cerrito.
-
If you have to have an answer one way or the other by the end of the month, I'll have to say no. I'm not sure if I'm even going to be able to get the time off yet.
-
I'll fix it. Did something change?
-
Actually confirmed for the con, but will be staying at a hotel.
-
I'll be there. Tal/Tonfa/I will be grabbing a hotel room. Kappa may also be with us, but we're opting out of the house.
(yes this means I have secured the presence of the Vice President)
-
Did you use underhanded methods and threats Laggy?
-
A Bomb is what some people call our show!
-
In case it wasn't obvious, my lack of response means that I am generally unsure about my attendance. I'll be going to a speedrun marathon in May and dunno if I have the spare hours or money for a second trip. Just thought I'll chime in for the record. Things could change though. We'll see.
-
100% confirmed for DLcon. Passport is in the mail (should be arriving next week), and short of losing my job I'll have enough money for both food and rent.
-
Not sure if too late, but I intend to be in the house.
Next step is getting plane ticket.
-
With you added, we have 14 people (plus a couple offers to chip in). It'll put the total cost slightly higher, but it'll still be below $225 for the whole thing.
I think that's good enough to say yes, we're doing the house thing.
EDIT: I made a topic for the travel stuff. It has a brief FAQ and everything. (http://www.rpgdl.com/forums/index.php/topic,6680.0.html)
-
I have a question with regards to local availability of a product or service that will greatly impact my ability to make this:
Is there a karaoke bar with Japanese karaoke available?
-
...that will greatly impact my ability to make this
Yes!
...
Also, for real, yes. SF has a dedicated Japantown complete with Kinokuniya (actually, it has its own mall) and at least one izakaya with private (themed!) karaoke rooms. I don't immediately know of one closer to the house, but Japantown is a brief BART + bus trip away.
-
Going to Japantown with my favourite Gundam? please make this hapepn.
-
In that case, I will do everything in my power to make it.
-
I really really really want to come to DLCon but I am still waiting on confirmation for time off at the dates of the event. If I can make it, I will definitely wanna crash at the house and pitch in but I still can't confirm my attendance at all. I'm honestly worried it'll be a no. Just my luck.
-
o7
Here's hoping!
Do you know when you might find out?
-
Andy informs me that the house is actually a rental house, so I'll go in on that if it's still possible.
-
I'm not really sure what else you thought it was, but...
Yep, there's still room. Pretty soon we'll have to talk couches and sleeping bags, but not yet.
-
Obv thought it was chipping in to pay for your timeshare.
-
Time off confirmed, and passport in hand. I am 100% confirmed.
-
Question, what'll be the easiest way to pay for the house?
-
Cash, check, or Venmo (app). Can be anytime between now and the con.
The final price is still up in the air, so if you pay in advance I recommend $225. If there's a change, I'll refund you the difference. (If it ends up costing more, I'll just eat it.)
-
I currently have 16 people who have said they're in for the house. This is the breakdown of sleeping options to the best of my knowledge:
6 double beds
1 queen bed
2 sofa beds / futons
2 double inflatable mattresses
All in 7 bedrooms and also the 2-ish living rooms
If you're staying in the house, you may want to arrange sharing ahead of time! We have more people than we have individual sleeping surfaces so there will have to be some sharing. If it turns out we get a few more people, I'll work out additional sleeping surfaces but it will likely consist of some combination of futon mattresses and/or more inflatable beds in living rooms (or rooms if they turn out to be large enough).
(Andrew and I are sharing so that's 1 bed down.)
-
There goes my plans then. Always cock blocking a bro Ash ;_;
As always I am okay with a flat surface if there is something to keep the cold out.
-
Well, I finally got my time off schedule for the summer. It starts... August 6th!
Sigh... so close. Literally one weekend off. Casting my vote for a later DLC next year. I can't believe I'm going to miss the ten-year anniversary of this event.
-
I'm in, will be staying at the house.
-
Sorry to hear you can't make it, DJ. :(
I'm in, will be staying at the house.
There you go, Grefter, I found you a substitute!
-
That's gross. Incest is wrong.
-
Sure, that's the line you draw.
-
I don't get it either. Andy is my bro too. The bro of your bro is also your bro.
-
quack i'll go
hotel lyfe for me
-
I was spitballing the idea of doing a dinner in chat, when Gate noted that the last time we used this house (if it's the one we're both thinking of) the stove in the kitchen looked unsafe. Was curious if this is still true.
-
Most likely. The landlords here aren't really motivated to upgrade anything since people will pay twice what it's worth for the space anyway.
I should be over there for a visit soon and then I can give more info. My own kitchen is underequipped for big cooking, too, so.
But hey, maybe the grill is in useful shape this time!
-
So unless there's any serious objections to it, I'll be bringing Kier along(he's 17 now and way less annoying). We'll chip in for the house, but will be staying at a hotel. I don't have the details for the hotel yet, but if anyone is interested in splitting costs of a room with me lemme know.
-
(he's 17 now)
#Raistlyn
-
This was fun..maybe I can make another appearance one of these days.

You and me both. Guess we'll just have to have our own DL Con, with blackjack, and hookers.
-
<OblivionKnight> In fact, forget the blackjack and the DL Con!
-
Recent things in personal life have made it such its probably possible for me to attend but it will be very last minute so I may not be able to :|. I'll see what happens next week. Apologies for the seemingly indecisiveness.
EDIT: I'm most likely out from reviewing the dates. I am looking for a new job and can't be away for that long in case an interview occurs. Maybe mini-meet or something else next year.
-
Yay and sad simultaneously, Tide. :(
--
We're down to the days before the con, folks! In 2 weeks and 1-2 days, DLC X begins. Please make sure to visit the travel thread (see the first post of this thread for a link) and figure out who you're coming in at the same time as, if anyone, and make sure to know how you're getting to El Cerrito. Andrew will be at work during the week. Andrew has the car. I have a motorcycle and no extra helmet. Try not to bank on having a ride anywhere.
I will most likely continue to be your primary point of contact, but Andrew will be your Cruise Activities Director. He'll post about it tonight or tomorrow night. I'll be taking off from work July 29-August 4 (Wednesday through Tuesday). I will have an interview in there somewhere that'll eat up half my day but hopefully it won't interfere with anything and I can get it out of the way early.
Easy-to-read list:
- Contact LD for logistics
- Contact Andrew for activities
- Visit the Travel thread to coordinate travel
- Hotel people, hotel it up - close to W of El Cerrito Plaza BART is close to the house
- Please, please have some way to pay me when you get here - plan on $175, but it will likely be lower
- If you're int'l and don't yet have somewhere to stay, let me know!
-
6009 Potrero Avenue, El Cerrito, CA 94530
http://www.hotelmiravista.com/
Tal, Richard, Kappa and I are staying here. 2 miles away from El Cerrito Plaza BART. (Ashley if you can pull the exact house address at any point it'd be appreciated.)
They're all flying into SJC early and I'll be picking them up/handling their departures.
-
We are driving down leaving Vancouver on Wednesday, and whether we arrive on Wednesday or Thursday has yet to be determined. Who is actually planning to be at the house on Wednesday, anyway?
-
No clue. How precise do you need to be? It's roughly in the Lincoln Ave x Liberty St area in El Cerrito.
Did we ever track down a more specific address? I'll be walking in from the BART station, so I'll want to know exactly where to go.
-
We are driving down leaving Vancouver on Wednesday, and whether we arrive on Wednesday or Thursday has yet to be determined. Who is actually planning to be at the house on Wednesday, anyway?
Meeple, Soppy, and VSM it looks like at this stage? Presumably Ashley/Andy too. I presume you were looking more to see if it would be inhibited on Wednesday, and the answer looks like yes.
-
We are driving down leaving Vancouver on Wednesday, and whether we arrive on Wednesday or Thursday has yet to be determined. Who is actually planning to be at the house on Wednesday, anyway?
Meeple, myself, VSM, Niu and Jim+1 all scheduled to come in on Wednesday at various times. Niu and Jim much later than the rest.
-
Alright, just got cleared for two days of vacation, can be at DLC for the full Thursday-Sunday!
-
House's address: 6506 Eureka Ave. El Cerrito, CA
Unless the house managed to move itself since 2010. Seems unlikely.
--
It's about a 10 minute/0.5mi walk from the BART station which is kind of awkward with luggage. Uber does serve the area so I do recommend y'all domestics set that up so you can get a car instead of schlepping with bags. I will not have a car during the day on Wednesday-Friday because Andrew needs it to get to work. I can rent one if I have to, though it's ~$120. I'll also not likely actually be there Thursday afternoon-ish because of an interview thing.
We'll make it work. Let me know what you guys need.
-
How usable is the kitchen? Does the oven work, is there a microwave, utensils, pots and pans for cooking or boiling water, etc...? Considering doing some cooking to cut down of food expenses.
-
Last time it was fully functioning and had at least rudimentary cooking tools.
I live a ~15-20 minute drive from the house, though, so if we need more I have a few things I can bring.
(I do not have a giant pot, Gate, if that was of interest to you...)
-
FINAL REMINDERS!
Y'all will be prepping for travel and whatnot, so here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Please bring $200 to pay for the house in digital (Paypal, Venmo), cash or check form. Those of you who pre-paid, I'll refund the difference when you get here.
- If you need to call me, please use my Google Voice number: 510-730-2665. If you already have a 909 number from me, that's also valid.
- I will not be able to pick anybody up from the airport! I have no car because Andrew will be working and needs it to get there. If the Travel topic directions via BART don't make sense, give me a call and I can help. But I cannot drive anyone.
- The forecast is for low-to-mid 70s (~21C) and partly cloudy. The temperature is known to swing wildly (70* forecast, 50* one day, 90* the next) so make sure you're prepared for that. There's about a 60% chance the weather will be as advertised.
- If you want to pack light, good news: there's a washer & dryer here.
I'll be at the house all day Wednesday so I can get y'all to the right place. Thursday arrivals will have to deal with someone else since I'll be in SF from ~10:30am to 5 or 6pm.
The address is 6506 Eureka Ave., El Cerrito, CA. There should be plenty of parking for the drivers.
-
I want to reiterate this:
NEITHER ASHLEY NOR I CAN ASSIST YOU IN GETTING TO THE HOUSE.
-
So you are saying that people should follow directions on this link here (http://www.rpgdl.com/forums/index.php/topic,6680.0.html)for how to get to and from the airport in the section labelled How do I get to the house from the airport? And back again?
-
That would certainly be nice, because we can't drive anyone from the airport to the house.
-
Hey guys. Don't want to be a bother, but I recently lost both my legs in the Star Wars. Any way I can get a ride from the airport to the house?
Now bear with me. The lack of CGI will make it look like I still have legs. But I assure you, they are gone.
-
I'm just so tired of these Star Wars.
-
Guys I'm not coming but can I get a ride to taco bell
-
Our +1 has come down with the flu and probably won't be coming with us. :(
