Gotta end this year with some space opera.
-
David Bowie - Dancing In The Streets
-
Trespassers William - Ledge

A remix of Gwyn's theme from Dark Souls. Guy's done pretty good work with music from throughout the series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL770h6MBVlwHmzMs7e4DYmY4rAJyDOLL4
-
Annie Lennox - I Cover the Waterfront.
She has a blues album. In other news I am still pretending that I am not hella gay when I buy Annie Lennox albums.
-
I've been listening to Hozier and Kongos lately.
Kongos has a really interesting sound. Predictably, I hear their popular songs first: Kids These Days, My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark. I have long since given up shame at listening to pop music. To be fair, I heard My Songs through an alt station (and it caught my attention because it was one of the few songs that wasn't from the 90s/early 00s, good god).
EDITED: Okay, so pretty much all of Lunatic is awesome. Blending alternative with kwaito is amazing.
Hozier I'm enjoying because I really like acoustic sets -- primarily for their focus on lyrics, a single instrument, and singing, which to me conveys a certain amount more of talent and expression -- and also because his songs have a religious meditation aspect to them. I don't do that very much any more (it is sadly true that things become so static in your life as you age) so I like the opportunity to consider it.
-
The Daysleepers - Alone in the Universe
-
David Bowie - Cactus
-
Damon Albarn - The History of a Cheating Heart
I heard this album was good, so I decided to pick it up. It's interesting at least, but a little too slow-paced for me overall.
-
I am listening to a train. I don't know what is going on but it is making noises that makes a good snare beat and I am kind of freaking out a bit.
-
Deathstars - White Wedding.
Even someone else doing a cover of this is still 10000% Super.
-
New Carpenter Brut album came out one hour ago. Is super rad. 80's movie OSTish electro.

-
Lydia Loveless - Bad Way To Go
When I heard that she was a country punk artist I knew I had to at least give her a listen. :)
-
DMX - X Gon' Give It To Ya.
I am going to lend my little brother Pokemon X.
-
P.S. Grefter if you pick up the new Bjork album please tell me how it is~
Kamelot - Silverthorn
-
Toni Basil - Mickey
-
of Montreal - Obsidian Currents
-
Symphony X - Bastards of the Machine
Can you restore my dying faith?
-
Danny Brown - 25 Bucks (ft. Purity Ring).
-
Electric Six - Gun Rights
This song is kind of annoying, much like the people it is making fun of. <_<
-
The Rankins - Movin' On
One of my favorite songs about roving. Plus it's Canadian country music. :)
-
Stop ruining Canada for everyone :(
Danny Brown - Kush Coma.
-
My mom used to put the Rankins on during long car trips. This was not well appreciated by young Cideon and siblings.
Apocalyptica: The Shadow of Venus
-
Florence + the Machine - What Kind of Man.
It is going to be a long few months. holy fuck straight to the brittle emotional core
-
Millencolin - No Cigar.
Okay that is enough emotions for now.
-
David Bowie: Ashes to Ashes
-
Beyonce - Flawless
Bow down, bitches.
-
Camera Obscura - Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken
-
Florence + the Machine - What Kind of Man
I like this one. Very up tempo.
-
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - I Had a Dream, Joe
I've been doing some research on the next old Nick Cave album I want to pick up, which put me in the mood for Henry's Dream.
-
The Stone Roses - Waterfall
-
Florence + The Machine - What Kind of Man.
-
Garbage - Tell Me Where It Hurts (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnMMTqwc7s4)
I love this film clip a whole ton. Watched it because I talked about Bond songs in Movies topic. Related video is this. The song is just lush orchestral piece carried by a super pared back drum part that is really cleanly mixed. Subject matter is good and the story arc of the film clip is fun.
But none of that matters because the outfits in this are fucking amazing. Everything Shirley Manson wears in this looks fantastic on her.
-
amazarashi - "Seasons die one after another"
I am looping this MV a bit too much. This ED and Ishida's art really is what kept me watching Tokyo Ghoul's subpar anime adaptation every week.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtJcLWeY114
-
Nightwish- Shudder Before the Beautiful. Inspired me to do a misheard lyrics, but I realized that I think the actual lyrics were more non-sensical than I could come up with.
-
Garbage: Milk
Garbage definitely a band that consistently adheres to the Cid credo of saving one of the best songs for last.
-
Sean Combs/Jimmy Page: Come with me
I don't usually care for Zepplin or Diddy that much, but this mashup always has worked weirdly well for me.
-
The Magnetic Fields - Don't Look Away
-
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Song of Joy
In my house he wrote his red right hand
That, I'm told, is from Paradise Lost
-
R.E.M. - The Great Beyond
This might have been the last truly unforgettable song done by R.E.M., and this kinda saddens me. Such is the way of genius, though - nowhere to go but tedium or bedlam, and they went towards the former.
-
Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat.
-
The Magnetic Fields - Long Vermont Roads
Your eyes are toothless young men, in Tennessee in the rain again.
-

I strenuously disagree with your (and to be fair most peoples') opinion of R.E.M's later albums. (Totally agree that The Great Beyond is awesome tho)
Anyway, here's my essential listening for REM's later stuff:
Saturn Return, Bad Day, Leaving New York, Accelerate, Uberlin, and Mine Smell Like Honey.
Accelerate in particular is brilliant, tense and raw.
Uberlin and Mine Smell Like Honey I include mostly because they've got great music videos. I love that after these many decades music videos remain weird and experimental. Gives me hope for the human race, y'know?
Bad Day taps directly into what made their early pop stuff on Green and Document so great.
Saturn Return headlines the second half of Reveal - the half of the album that is worth listening to.
Leaving New York is a song about moments in transition, moments of uncertainty. It's a song for anyone who has ever moved to a new city, not knowing what to expect. Or moved from an old one, not knowing when they will return.
-
I'm currently on a binge relistening session on R.E.M. right now, which includes everything post-Reveal (ironically, the first album of theirs I've ever listened to) - which I barely gave any attention to due to feeling so lukewarm on them - technically pristine but emotionally hollow is the -last- thing I want from a band built on absurd heights of pathos. I think the only post-Monster album I've connected emotionally with was Up, which, as uneven as it is, actually teems with sincerity. THIS SAID:
R.E.M. - Begin the Begin
-
The Pretty Reckless - Going to Hell
-
Lydia Loveless - Learn to Say No
A song about depression and alcohol dependence. Lydia's pretty emotionally honest compared to most country artists, which is one of the things I like about her. <3
-
Nightwish- Alpenglow
-
My Bloody Valentine - Swallow
-

One presumes that this statement is exclusive of Monster, not inclusive.
I like Up. It's not great, but it at least tries to be something unique which is, well, more than I can say for whatever the heck New Adventures in Hi-Fi was doing.
-
The Pretty Reckless - Heaven Knows
-
Susanne Sundfor - Slowly
New album's out. Still more deliciously baroque synthesized darkness.

Well, I have problems with Monster too, but it's got pathos itself. New Adventures in Hi-Fi is mostly a somewhat elegant exercise in boredom at its best.
(Sorry about double-posting)
-
Nightwish - Weak Fantasy
-
How amazing is The Greatest Show track? So fucking over the top, I love it so much. I can't tell if it is genuine or if they just really love Cosmos.
Lorde - Tennis Courts.
-
Arcade Fire - Wake Up
Something filled up
my heart with nothing.
Someone told me not to cry~
-
Florence + The Machine - What the Water Gave Me.
-
Public Domain - Operation Blade.
Give up on life. Enter a trance (not you trancey). Finally feel good for a few minutes. Today was kind of shitty.
-
David Bowie - The Man Who Sold the World
-
Public Domain - Operation Blade.
This time it is just because Hard dance is fucking dumb and I love it.
-
Claude Debussy - Prelude #10: La Cathédrale Engloutie
-
Florence + the Macine - Ship to Wreck
<3 <3 <3 This song is awesome. I'm hyped for this album now.
-
Florence + The Machine - What Kind Of Man.
-
Apocalyptica: Riot Lights
New Apocapalyptica! It is a fairly different album in that they have one steady singer this time and the vocal tracks solidly outnumber the instrumentals. Odd change for me since it makes them feel more like a normal band (I always preferred the instrumentals) but I am getting used to it and there is some good stuff here.
-
Allo Darlin' - We Come From The Same Place
-
Apocalyptica: Dead Man's Eyes
Reminds me of the kind of thing Garbage always uses to end their albums. Slow, deliberate tempo, moody and brooding, trances out hypnotically in the latter third or so. As I've no doubt remarked before: good way to close things out.
-
Mumford & Sons - Broad-Shouldered Beasts.
-
Nina Simone - That's All I Ask
-
Florence + The Machine - No Light, No Light.
-
Any opinions on the new Mumford & Sons stuff, Grefter or anyone else?
-
I like it. It doesn't blow my mind or anything but there isn't anything bad on it.
-
I heard it was a Mumford & Sons without banjo and lost interest immediately. Their best songwriting almost entirely runs through the banjo lines.
-
Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars.
-
May have to listen to the stuff on Youtube or something.
Janelle Monae - Yoga
I know what album I am going to pick up though!
-
Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat.
-
Chevelle- Vitamin R
-
Electric Six - Gun Rights
this song is so annoying but i guess thats the point
Florence + the Machine - Ship to Wreck
Now this song is awesome. :)
-
Susanne Sundfør - Darlings
-
Dead Can Dance - Rakim
-
The Cure - Lullaby
All of the songs on this album are solid, but this is one of my favorites.
-
Took you long enough to dig into The Cure. Disintegration is probably their most consistent and elaborate work.
-
Took you long enough to dig into The Cure. Disintegration is probably their most consistent and elaborate work.
Fascination Street's my personal favorite there (it's also what got me listening to them in the first place).
-
I prefer Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, but again probably your most important experience colouring everything (my copy is a birthday present from a cousin. It was about 10 year old well loved copy then and it meant a lot to share it).
-
Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me has amazing highs and absolutely forgettable lows. It's a lovable mess of an album in the boiling of eggs, for all that it highlights very bluntly how scarce Bobby Smith's quality control was back then (and probably still is to some degree. Disintegration's almost a freak incident in that regard).
-
I've had it for a while, just haven't been listening to music too much lately relatively. I may try another at some point.
-
Taylor Swift - Bad Blood
Dear god this song is awful why did i do this to me taylor swift voice plus bad rap augh
-
why
This Mortal Coil - Strength of Strings
-
David Bowie - Changes.
-
Love of Diagrams - Static Information
-
Apocalyptica: Hope Vol. 2
Might still be my favorite thing they've done (despite usually preferring the instrumentals).
-
David Bowie: Heathen (the Rays)
Still amazing.
-
Mad Max Fury Road OST: Brother in Arms
Proper noise to rock out to while doing GM work. This might be one of those soundtracks I have to own.
-
King Crimson: Starless
Cid supremacy of topic continues
-
This Mortal Coil - Velvet Belly
Cid supremacy of topic continues
ha-ha
-
Queensryche - Roads to Madness
The bestest dramatic-est song ever.
-
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - We No Who U R
-
Pet Shop Boys- The Way It Used to Be
Sassy music, getting ready for the new Florence album~
-
The Pretty Reckless- House up on the hill
-
Bayonetta OST: The Greatest Jubilee
Chat reminded me this game had some outstanding boss music. I should probably give the second game a listen since I cannot, alas, actually play it.
-
Ooooh, The Pretty Reckless is pretty awesome. I have been enjoying that album pretty well.
Electric Six - Afterlife
-
For anyone interested, the new Florence + the Machine album is out. I've picked it up, will give it a listen tomorrow morning most likely.
-
First impression of the Florence album is that it seems to be somewhere in between Lungs and Ceremonials in terms of pace, drawing a bit from both. I'm enjoying it so far, although I have only listened to it while a bit distracted.
-
In terms of pacing, that statements is pretty much correct. But How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful is very unlike both Lungs and Ceremonials. The one thing all three have in common is being very pretty and well-written. I love the brass strewn around HBx3.
Speaking of which:
Florence + the Machine - St. Jude
-
Florence + the Machine - Queen of Peace
I'm about 100% sure Florence Welch is one of the most accomplished artists to have appeared in the last decade. This album is even more cohesive and thought out than Ceremonials is. This is a hell of a feat.
-
Nightwish - Alpenglow
very retro nightwish
-
Florence + the Machine - How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
A cool thing about this album is how it has a bunch of subtle, yet very noticeable bluesy influences all over the place. When it inevitably goes cathartic (one of the band's fundamentals, after all), it almost feels like Florence invokes an army of New Orleans musicians and parades around the streets with them.
-
Florence + the Machine - What Kind Of Man
I feel this song gets a lot bigger and stronger in the album's context.
-
Florence + the Machine - What Kind of Man.
Yeah in the exact way I was hoping as well. I was talking about it with my Dad and he didn't seem to be able to pick a stand out song. I said that I think it is because she wrote an album instead a bunch of songs.
I think Which Witch from the special edition might be the strongest song in isolation, because the b-sides aren't written as a cohesive part of a whole.
That said, this song rips my heart out and melts it in front of me.
-
I actually think there are a -few- stand-out songs in the album (Queen of Peace, Delilah and How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful are simply breathtaking), but it all really boils down to the album's unity. This is a work in which I simply don't put songs on repeat because all of the pieces walk hand-in-hand. They converse, they flow into each other, and that's downright the biggest artistic accomplishment there. I've seen reviews complaining that the songs, at some point, start melding into each other, but that's the very point. And even then, every offering still has its own unique touch, much in the same way the songs in Ceremonials did.
-
Florence and the Machine - How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
I <3 <3 <3 this song
-
Florence and the Machine - How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
I <3 <3 <3 this song
Oh god, yes.
-
Blue Oyster Cult: Veteran of the Psychic Wars
All the scars are on the insii~iide
-
I'm not sure if there's anything left of meeee~
Florence and the Machine - Delilah
-
Join us Cid, jooooooiiiiiin.
Florence + the Machine - Which Witch.
A Florence track that evokes imagery one heresy and drums that I love. What a novel new thing that is.
-
Nah man that would require me to listen to new music.
Queen: Delilah
That'll have to be close enough. Ode to Freddy Mercury's cat.
-
Wildpath- Crystallized.
A banjo+current Nightwish feeling background+a random Grandia-esque interlude+3:30-4:00 (which just completely baffle me).
-
The Pretty Reckless - House on a Hill
-
The Pretty Reckless- Why'd you bring a shotgun to the party
This band came up on my Pandora feed. I really am digging them, especially the lead singer.
-
Florence + the Machine - Mother.
Ceremonials?
I put my feet into the fountain
The statues' all asleep
No use wishing on the water
It grants you no relief
Mic drop on your last album like a boss.
-
Both Mother and Third Eye mic drop on Ceremonials pretty hardcore, it's great.
Cocteau Twins - Otterley.
-
Protomen: Because the Night
Protomen made another cover album, which is not Act 3 but is still better than nothing. They tried to smash together Bruce & Patti versions here, which is the sort of thing you can do when you have multiple singers.
-
The Magnetic Fields - Strange Powers
"Under more stars than there are prostitutes in Thailand" is an absolutely amazing verse to pen into a love song.
-
Deathstars - Mark of the Gun.
This song is Ciatos level melodrama.
-
Cocteau Twins - Sultitan Itan
-
The Pretty Reckless - Absolution
-
The Pretty Reckless- Going to Hell
-
Rush: Bastille Day
Nerrrrrrds
(Which is to say, "Canadians.")
-
Susanne Sundfør - Delirious
-
Offspring- You're gonna go far kid
Anything Offspring after come out and play is very hit or miss, but I do like this song.
E: The Pretty Reckless- Absolution
Taylor Momson is good at this whole rock star thing, holy shit.
-
First Aid Kit - America
This is a remake of the Simon and Garkfunkel song. It's really nice. I love these ladies.
-
This Mortal Coil - Mama K I
-
The Pretty Reckless - Heaven Knows
-
Florence and the Machine - Mother
Between Florence and The Pretty Reckless and Nightwish, I've gotta say that women are dominating my iPod these days.
-
iamamiwhoami - Goods
-
Florence and the Machine - Mother
Between Florence and The Pretty Reckless and Nightwish, I've gotta say that women are dominating my iPod these days.
With good reason. For me it's Flyleaf, Halestorm, and The Pretty Reckless but the effect is the same. Taylor Momson has an amazing voice and the band's great too.
-
Lapis Lazuli- The Downfall of Humanity: The Downfall.
-
Star Control 2 remix- Through the Angles of Space
This has been stuck in my head of late, as I associate the theme with Miles Vorkosigan.
-
Evil Cowards - Summer of the Purple Man
Dick Valentine has been converted to The Gay, just like Orson Scott Card warned us.
-
Flyleaf- All around me
-
Not what I'm actually listening to, but topically relevant:
I told my chiro that next time I saw him my neck might be out of shape due to excessive headbanging when Epica comes into town at the end of the month. I knew that he knew who Nightwish was because an employee told him, because he said that he also knew who Epica was and that a friend had taken him to several genre concerts and that he actively listened to a few bands. Next time I may take music to foist on him.
-
:)
Dixie Chicks - The Long Way Around
A bit of a personal anthem.
-
Babymetal - Ijime, Dame, Zettai.
-
The do: unissassi laulelet
NieR ost stealth bonus track
-
Kiba of Akiba - Party@ the BBS.
Unironically enjoying something referred to as Otakucore. I am literally a traitor to all I believe in.
-
The do: unissassi laulelet
NieR ost stealth bonus track
That's the Shadowlord piano version, yeah? (Obviously I have a physical copy of this OST because come on.)
-
The Cure: 39
Robert Smith's really at his best when he's at his depressingest.
-
Flyleaf- Fully Alive
-
Just spreading words that these two albums are coming out soon.
http://www.square-enix.co.jp/music/sem/page/promise/
http://www.square-enix.co.jp/music/sem/page/harukanaru/
Though, I am in deep despair that there is still no Irwin on Reflection.
I mean, this how many-th arrange album by Shimomura now? Can she do Irwin on Reflection already!?
Speaking of which, she already did the iconic tracks for both Jumi and the Dragon arc. Yet she did absolutely none of the Matilda arc's track....
On the other hand, Mitsuda finally answered to the fan outcry and did a vocal for Corridors of Time. The CT lovers are clearly in frenzy.
But I must say To the Farway Times has lost its magic here. And why is Marbule sounds like a Suikoden track here?
-
Kiba of Akiba - My Personal Computer is Dead.
USB TOOOOOO
-
Janelle Monae - Q.U.E.E.N
Even if it makes others uncomfortable, I will love who I am.
-
New Order: True Faith
Because jsh reminded me it exists, and it is pretty fucking beautiful for song about drug addiction.
-
Florence + the Machine - Which Witch.
Oh look, it is those emotion things again.
-
Deftones- Rx Queen
-
If Eternity Should Fail - Iron Maiden
Creepiest Intro/Outro ever? Also, The Book of Souls is probably the best Maiden album since Somewhere Out in Time. It's still in the prog metal vein as the post Brave New World albums, but also brings back some of their raw 80s edge. Makes for good balance overall.
-
Perturbator: Raw Power
Apparently this is Hotline Miami music or something? I dunno, I randomly heard the artist used as background in a totally unrelated LP. Whatever it is, it's fucking amazing.
-
Perturbator did some some songs for Hotline Miami. And yes, it is very good stuff.
-
Flyleaf- Fully Alive
E:Fireflight- For those who wait
-
Gloryhammer- Universe on Fire
They are greatly upgraded Dragonforce.
-
Nine Inch Nails- We're in this together
And if I want cheesy fantasy/power metal, I go with Blind Guardian myself.
-
Queensryche - Roads to Madness
Max camp level achieved
-
The Magnetic Fields - Don't Look Away
-
Protomen - Hold Back the Night
They released two singles from Act 3 (edit: that is sadly not out yet but in production) and both are great. Very obviously doubling down on the 80s epic rock style which makes me kinda sad because I liked Act 1 better than Act 2 in hindsight, but it's still great anyway. Hold Back the Night is very reminiscent of what Rush and Led Zepplen's baby would look like and that is pretty dang cool.
-
Lit- Miserable
E: Apocalyptica: Hope Vol 2
I've had this song stuck in my head all month.
-
Metric - The Governess
New album is pretty darn good, pretty standard Metric fare, but this song is a gem.
-
Metric - For Kicks
This album has a strange psychodelia vibe that sometimes reminds me of Hotline Miami's soundtrack. This honestly isn't a bad thing.
-
Sixpence None The Richer- Silent Night
-
Laserkraft3D - Nein Mann!
….. Nein Mann, ich will noch nicht gehen… ich will noch ein bisschen tanzen.
-
Fetty Wap - My Way
Baby won't you come mah WAAAA~AA~AAA~A~A~A~A~A~A~A~~~A~A~A~A~~~~A~A~AY
-
Blue Oyster Cult - Astronomy
I just got Imaginos in the mail yesterday. This faster paced version of the song is a little weird but good.
-
The Long Blondes - Once And Never Again.
yes I am still listening to this album.
-
Blue Oyster Cult - Astronomy
I just got Imaginos in the mail yesterday. This faster paced version of the song is a little weird but good.
It's an extremely eighties rendition of their best song. Somehow this works.
~
Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Tarkuuuuuuus
Busted open the old boxed set for the first time in years. I think I like these guys more than I used to? But mostly this makes me wonder exactly what percentage of Uematsu's youth was spent listening to ELP. One presumes a significant proportion. Dancing Mad's DNA is everywhere in this song.
-
Chevelle- Vitamin R (Leading us along)
-
Digital Devil Saga 2 OST: Hunting ~ Betrayal
I was listening to the first soundtrack on the way home from work today and kinda wishing I had the second because Divine Identity, right? But mostly I was remembering playing this ten years ago (it was the first thing I did in my new apartment. Okay, after watching Star Trek VI) and it being the biggest pile of what in the world is even happening on my screen that I'd ever played. Maybe still is. That kind of response is worth a lot to me. I kind of want to replay it now, but then I doubt I could put up with those dungeons a second time.
-
Kawehi - Closer (NIN Cover)
-
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
I just picked this album up for the first time a month or so ago. It's legit pretty great.
-
Parasite Eve OST: Main Theme (orchestral version)
Random linkage after coming across A.V. Club retrospective because it's Christmastime yo. Have little intention or interest in ever playing the game a second time, but soundtrack excerpts like this are still amazing to me. Figure I know what I'm listening to on the drive to/from the parents' place next week. (I do own a physical copy of this OST.)
-
Parasite Eve's OST is fantastic. The game's style and music were amazing. Too bad about the rest of it.
Bleeding Through- Stars
Decent cover of Stars, though not as good as the original. Better than the absolute butchering Finch did of this song.
Flyleaf- Cassie
Definitely a Christian rock band, but they are a ton of fun anyway.
