Title: NaNoWriMo '10
Post by: Bardiche on October 05, 2010, 10:00:39 PM
So hey, can't ever start these too early, right?

It's almost November, so the time for plotting and preparation work is now! National Novel Writing Month will hit us again in just under a month! Who's all prepared to take part in this swimmingly ridiculous attempt at 50,000 words in a month?! I intend to try again but aim for 30,000 words instead, due to schedule. I can do 1,000 words per day, maybe, but 1,666 is a bit too much for my tastes.

How's 'bout you guys?!

Planning now. I have a story I want to write this year, so that's a definite improvement over previous years. <_<

I live near the NaNo offices, so I might partake of some of the local shenanigans. We'll see. The one I really want to do requires raising $300, and I'm not so sure I can do that. But, again, we'll see.

Not sure I can make the 50k in a month because I really want to be spending time working on graduate school application stuff, but this is important to me too. No real reason I can't do both!

... hahah.

Usual boasting about speed despite planned story not being mindless like last year.

I'd love to do this, but I really should be doing other things! I have been writing though. :)

Does writing a game script count?

Hmm... I don't care. I think I'll use this opportunity to pound through a game script instead. Should be plenty managable, at least!

Need approximately 3500 lines of text.

So... about 125 lines a day?

Well, there is National SCRIPT Writing Month, but it's probably just fiiiine if you do it during NaNo instead of NaSci.

There's a National Script Writing Month?

It's abbreviated as NaSci?

I'll say the same I said last year - if I come up with an idea, I'll at least start writing something. Odds are I'll also do what I did last year and get bored around 5-10k words.

Oh yeah. I forgot to post. I'm going to win NaNoWriMo this year.

Mmm, wonder if I should go with a continuation of my story, or actually write the beginning..  choices choices...

I hemmed and hawed and went "simply not enough time" then I realized fuck it, let's do this.  I haven't written a new story in a year.  That Orwellian alien invasion story's been rattling around in my head for two years.  I'm in a pretty stable situation right now.  I can balance tutoring and writing and drinking, for sure.

where doing this man

where making this hapen

Scrivener is offering a NaNo '10 deal (http://www.literatureandlatte.com/nanowrimo.html): finish your novel in a special extended-trial version of their new release, get 50% off the license price. Even if you don't, you can use a promo code to get 20% off the license.

For those that don't know, Scrivener is writing software. It's cool because it takes a lot of the "hard copy" process out of writing, if you want it to -- it holds character sketches, notes, will automatically format your writing to manuscript style, sets writing goals (and this NaNo trial version has a template which has been pre-set to NaNo standards), and allows you to see a corkboard sketch of your chapters by scene, your characters altogether, and more.

It's VERY cool software, and even if you don't end up buying it, you should consider using the program for NaNo (and it's free for that!).

It's been available on Mac for a while now, but part of this NaNo deal is beta-ing the Windows version.

So... go. Download!

Oooh. No interest in NaNoWriMo or fiction writing in general, but a word processor that'll integrate my notes, references and draft copy on the same screen? Yes yes yes yes please.

I don't suppose it'll save the finished product into a format that plays nice with Word?
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo '10
Post by: Lady Door on October 27, 2010, 11:39:36 PM
This particular preview copy is limited to fiction manuscripts, but the full software supports fiction, non-fiction, scriptwriting, poetry & lyrics, and "miscellaneous." It won't allow you to necessarily side-by-side notes, references and draft copy, BUT, it DOES have a little side window for references (a la links) and does have a short window on the side for brief notes. So... kinda?

It's customizable to an extent, so I encourage you to check out the regular version (NOT the NaNo preview) and poke around in it to see if you can get it to do what you want.

And it can save (actually, Export) to a .doc Word format just fine (as well as RTF, TXT and Final Draft).

Annoying part is Scrivener seemingly losing its formatting when I close and then re-open it. Anything I'm doing wrong or one of the joys of having a beta?

It's got the side window for notes, and can import PDF's and side-by-side them with any other section of the document, or just quickswap between the two if you want to keep full-screen focus. It'd work better if I had a widescreen monitor, but I'll take it.

Madness descends! 2,100 words. Wordwars are good. Not good for quality of writing. But they motivate to write even if you want to spend four hours deliberating the next few lines.

Good luck to the others joining in!

So I am not participating in this but I've been working on a story for about three months and I have 6-11k worth of words for it (depending on what I decide to include vs. not). I'm going to try to at least continue it at a reasonable clip during this month!

More like my stomach burning to a crisp.  Eating so damn many hot chips when I first woke up was a bad idea in retrospect.

15080 for the day.

Going to sleep early though since I'm oddly tired despite waking up at noon.

You haven't finished yet, Fudo? tsk, such failure, coming from you... I thought today was for finishing it, and tomorrow for going over and making a revised edition with each tiny detail examined and rewritten to perfection!
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo '10
Post by: Fudozukushi on November 02, 2010, 04:53:38 AM
Ha, this is like, the most undeatiled thing I have ever written.  This post has more detail than a chapter.  I actually went back and added details to my latest chapter so I could hit 15k.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo '10
Post by: Lady Door on November 02, 2010, 05:37:05 AM
I, meanwhile, squeaked in at just under 2k which is pretty awesome considering what a fail day it has been. -_-

Word sprints are for weekends. Also, I actually -like- this story idea and I'm having a hard time pushing myself to keep going when what I really want to do is go back and make sure everything works.

But I'm treating this as a "draft zero"/extended notes writing session, so that helps.

Also: Composing in Scrivener for Windows is very :( right now. I think it is being relegated to formatting status. I like it for organizing, but it seems to keep locking up when I want to type in it. I'll look into that tomorrow.

Up to 13.5k. I'm going to aim for 20-25k for the rest of the month.

Posting my word counter here because it takes a long time to load and I don't need it on every page of the DL:

(http://www.nanowrimo.org/widget/LiveSupporter/80255.png) (http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/80255)

I also linked my profile's URL to my NaNo ID homepage. Feel free to friend me/add me. I'm up to Word Wars/sprints, etc. whenever I'm around as long as you aren't Fudo because good god I just can't compete.

Feeling pretty good! I'm at about 3500 for today and going to coast easily past the finish line for today's goal of 1667. Trying to work ahead because I know there will be plenty of work days where I won't have the time to write like I do now.

Really loving this story I'm writing, too, though it's kind of silly. I haven't done this much sustained writing in a long time. It feels good.

Broke the 10,000 mark. pretty darn proud of myself right now. Steadily ahead, despite my misgivings about the story. I'm positive I'd have much less words if I didn't turn off my inner editor. A lot of lines come out, make me cringe and want to rewrite them but resisting means I actually progress and get things done. So far so good, though.

Winning NaNo isn't just a dream anymore!

Noooooooooo!

NaNoWriMo.org is down, and I can't update my word count. It's going to show me as not having reached my word goal for today. But I have! :( :( :(

It doesn't really matter, I guess, because I -do- have the words. But man. Still. An electronic mark that says I failed. :(

Man, I'm still yet to start. Hrm. Hopefully actually going on the NaNo site will finally push me into writing something. >.>

Edit: And, it apparently works! 30 minutes later, 800 words done. Still no idea where this is going, but isn't that the style of NaNo? ^_^

Edit 2: Done for tonight. Was supposed to be doing college work, did 1800 words on NaNo instead. I like that the NaNo site tells me that, at this rate, I'll finish next May.
Oh, so far, I have a talking cat and obvious love interest. That's about it.

Double lagged. Not really satisfied with where my original plan was going and behind on words. Taking a day or so to regroup while maintaining that a pittance of writing is done each day.
