Title: Two-Minute Game Reviews: Revived!

Bringing back the topic Super used to run at the old boards. Brief thoughts on one game a week, for as long as I can keep thinking of games that people other than Niu, Gourry and I have played.

Let's kick this off with...

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 7/10, or thereabouts.

Best feature/element: Battle system. Good controls, free movement, variety, even good challenge if you avoid normal mode.
Worst feature/element: The Natalia glitch. *mutters*

Best character: Jade. A funny sociopath type who's actually got some depth to him? Shock!
Worst character: Anise. FAIL.

Best PC in-game: Guy. Luke and Jade are also up there, but Luke is basically Guy-Lite for most things that matter and Jade can't do his thing if there's no melee fighter running interference.
Worst PC in-game: Hard to say. TotA is definitely an "anybody can be good" sort of game, and while my LVP is Natalia, it's not her fault that she was gimped by a glitch. I'll go with Anise for being worse than Guy/Luke at physicals and worse than Jade at magic, but she's still useful with either.

Favorite moment: Dist's introduction. Hilarious.
Least favorite moment: Ion's death. Not a bad scene in itself, but it sealed Anise's transition from annoying to offensively bad.

Rating: 9/10. Great gameplay, a fun story and great character work held back by a lot of backtracking and some glitches. One of the best games released in the PS2 era.

Best feature/element: Good party interaction and combat.
Worst feature/element: The actual villains were pretty lame.

Best character: Jade? Luke? Tear? Asch? Natalia? Take your pick. Going to go with Tear today.
Worst character: Sync. Completely worthless emo kid. Largo also blows.

Best PC in-game: Guy by far. Range, speed, damage. He can do it all.
Worst PC in-game: Anise. There's no reason to ever use her.

Favorite moment: Mieu abuse was great.
Least favorite moment: Arietta's death scene. Burn in hell for that Largo.

Rating: 2.5/10. It sucks. Beyond one or two shining redeeming features I hate it. You've been warned, before you read this.

Best feature/element: Luke and Tear. Actually a decent RPG couple, as well as being fine characters in their own right.
Worst feature/element: Battle system? World map? Pathetic supporting cast filled with stock anime archetypes? I dunno. Battle system is fundamentally the reason why the game sucks, though.

Best character: Luke and Tear. Indecisive today. Also don't think I'd like one nearly as much without the other, on the balance. Dist is also cool.
Worst character: Anise or Asch, the dilemma! Diferent types of idiots, and the writers seem to expect us to sympathise with them. Jade, Natalia, and Sync are all pretty bad too.

Best PC in-game: Natalia. Whee range.
Worst PC in-game: Anise. I think. See Shale?

Favorite moment: Revenge journals. Dist rules. Also: Luke/Tear in the clinic, sleep spell on the poor guy under Fon Knight HQ and the party's reaction to it.
Least favorite moment: Uh sure, the volcano. For all that "everything after Absorption Gate except the final battle" works as a general, overblown, KNOW-WHEN-TO-END,-GAME answer.

Ugh. Worthless gameplay, so it's a 50 hour plot game trying to tell a 20 hour story or so, with over half the PC cast worthless and the villains no better off. Nice if you like lots of stock anime cliches I guess. Luke and Tear deserved a better game, but on the other hand, if the game lacked them, I would never have finished it.

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 10/10. Tales of the Abyss is an incredible game that only gets better as I have time to reflect on it.

Best feature/element: PC cast. Each character barring Anise is at least good as well as being interesting.  Further, they have superb interactions with each other, flushing out their characters far more.
Worst feature/element: I'll say the baddie cast today, as it had a few flops.

Best character: Luke. His transformation throughout the game is always riveting to watch. Guy and Tear are also extremely good.
Worst character: Sync. While there is something to be said for the argument of: Sync sucks, but it's to show that you're the good guys and that the bad guys are ultimately misguided idiots; Sync still sucks huge balls.

Best PC in-game: Luke.
Worst PC in-game: That's a hard one. I'll say Jade, since mages aren't competitive with fighters in game for various reasons. (Normal mode, I hear this changes in Very Hard and Unknown.)

Favorite moment: The ending movie. It's understated and seems to be unclear, but it rewards you with a solid answer if you've paid attention to the the skits and the plot discussions. The answers to it are right in front of you and I love that they trusted the player enough to figure it out on their own terms.
Least favorite moment: Dist. Pick a scene, really.

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 10/10.  It has fallings, but damn if it isn't great.  Love it.  Best in the series, one of the best modern-era games.

Best feature/element: The general feel.  The game overall feels very complete, fun and good in all categories.
Worst feature/element: Slow pacing.  It really is a slow game that drags at points.

Best character: DIST.
Worst character: Uh...probably...honestly, I don't know.  Anise is very weak and the game could have done without her - not necessary for the story.  So yeah, her, for all that I don't hate her.

Best PC in-game: Natalia.  Guy's awesome, yes, but Natalia solos the game.  The range and overall good stats everywhere else do it.
Worst PC in-game: Asch.  By far.

Favorite moment: The battle with Asch in Eldrant.  It just...was so fitting.  Really good climax of the life of the two.
Least favorite moment: Mmm...nothing is jumping out at me.  Although I suppose in general, there were some random scenes, short, that just didn't feel worth it...OH!  WORLD MAP DUNGEONS!  That's a moment!

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 9/10.

Best feature/element: Cast.  Although they put a lot more detail into the setting than I'd have expected, making that stand out more (few games bother on that end...)
Worst feature/element: World Map.

Best character: Hmm.  Nah, Luke.
Worst character: Largo.  The other offenders (Sync, Anise, Asch) have semi-plausible excuses to be utter retards and have a handful of decent scenes otherwise.  Largo's "no, my daughter is dead, time to die!" speech?  No.

Best PC in-game: Guy.  Most fun/fluid to handle.
Worst PC in-game: Anise?  Never used her much, but didn't seem fun to control or especially handy on AI.

Favorite moment: "But... I don't want to die..." "THEN DON'T!"  Chills, man.
Least favorite moment: That time I wandered into the highlands map-dungeon before I was supposed to.  ye gods.

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 7/10 - For all that I probably hype it more than this.  Probably should raise it sometime or something.

Best feature/element: Free run, characters, plot, setting.  One of those.
Worst feature/element: World map.

Best character: Natalia~
Worst character: Anise.  Die.

Best PC in-game: Natalia~  Solos the game on Hard?  Yes please.
Worst PC in-game: Uh... Anise, I think?  Seemed kind of slow, and everyone else had something to keep them ahead, I think.  Whatever.  Natalia needs no help.

Favorite moment: Jade owning Dist in... Ketelsberg?  Wherever.  Jade owning Dist.  Also, "I'M BEING MOCKED BY SAVAGES!"
Least favorite moment: Anise failing.  I know this happens a lot, but you know what I'm talking about.

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 9/10.  I said that this game is the perfect game for me if not for that one awful feature.

Best feature/element:  Gameplay, character variety, fun difficulity modes, polish not related to loading times and world map.
Worst feature/element:  The World Map.  Laggy, glitchly, and you're on it a lot. Also, World Map-like dungeons. *Punts the highlands and swamp*

Best character:  Dist.  Dist is <3
Worst character:  Mohs.  Random Fat evil priest #54534575876113

Best PC in-game:  Guy, but I don't think there's a clear MVP in this game
Worst PC in-game: Anise.  Again, she does have some use. (Secondary spell casting)

Favorite moment:  Almost every scene with Dist.
Least favorite moment: Scenes with Largo and Natalia. "YOU'RE NOT A PRINCESS" "YES I AM" "NO U R NOT" "YES I AM" blahblah

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 10/10 The characters, the plot, the battle system, all a blast. Solid music and good graphics are nice... and the pacing failed to bother me at all. Yeah.

Best feature/element: Characters. An excellent PC cast with a number of solid supporting characters, with a great deal of development and backstory throughout.
Worst feature/element: World map dungeons?

Best character: Ehhhh... I'll go... Tear today, for all that Luke and Jade also belong here.
Worst character: Sync I guess. Arietta and Largo get honorable mention.

Best PC in-game: Guy. Unfairly fast against most bosses, fluid, and powerful.
Worst PC in-game: Anise. Slow physical fighter, magic damage isn't any good.

Favorite moment: Hmmm... mmmm... ending scene was a pretty excellent way to finish things.
Least favorite moment: Someone's lame death scene. Hard to pick just one, though I can safely say that Asch doesn't go here.

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 10/10

Best feature/element: Cast.
Worst feature/element: The last 1/3rd of the game's plot.

Best character: Jade.
Worst character: Sync.

Best PC in-game: For control, Guy.  Otherwise Anise.
Worst PC in-game: Luke.  Completely worthless.

Favorite moment: Luke vs Asch fight 2.
Least favorite moment: Tower of Rem.
Title: Re: Two-Minute Game Reviews: Revived!

Rating: 3/10.

Best feature/element: Luke and Tear and all the plot surrounding them.
Worst feature/element: The fact that it is 35 hours too long.

Best character: Tear. She started out pretty weak, but she just kept getting better and better. Just a really good character, is shown to clearly have emotion without the breakdown of some of her castmembers.
Worst character: Anise. Um, yeah, there are no words for the volcano.

Best PC in-game: Guy.
Worst PC in-game: Anise.

Favorite moment: I loved the scene near the beginning where Van plays Luke like a fiddle. "You trust me, right?". Honorary mention to "realizing TotA has an auto mode I can use in the last dungeons so I can chat on the Internet during randoms" Not that I didn't do this beforehand, I just didn't have the guy I controlled moving. <_<
Least favorite moment: When I realized Van had gone all rawr I eat babies/want to clone the world because MANKIND SUCKS!! on me. Honorary mention to the Fun Master stuff in the volcano. Grah rage.

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 10/10 (NEB and Ciato are, of course, morons and I move that their ratings be discounted on grounds that I hate them.)

Best feature/element:  Plot, most of the characters (Re: Not most of the God Generals and not Anise).
Worst feature/element: World Map.  So god damn glitchy.

Best character:  Jade
Worst character: Arietta.  Sync's an emo jackass but Arietta managed to piss me off far more with her idiocy.

Best PC in-game: Guy.  Can solo things with a strategy other than "stay on the other side of the battlefield."  Honorable mention to Jade, though he's less good by himself and more good for his fonic circles and using magic in conjunction to your control character's physicals.
Worst PC in-game:  Asch.  Anise is bad, yes, but Asch has... MIDGAME EQUPZ ZOMG

Favorite moment:  Everybody turning against Luke for being the dumbass that he is.
Least favorite moment:  Anytime Arietta opened her mouth, crying about the death of her human-eating mommy.
Title: Re: Two-Minute Game Reviews: Revived!

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 7/10  Everything NEB says is pretty much true, I just like the combat system even if a Tales fan like myself found it grating by the end (but then this is sometimes a trait throughout the series)

Best feature/element:  Respect for the player with regards to the plot.  It really is told in such a way that it lets you draw your own conclusions.  They should be obvious ones, but I am sick to death of being told the answers and having everything sugar coated.
Worst feature/element:  World map woooo.

Best character:  Jade.  I can understand disliking him.  I cannot understand disliking him but liking me.
Worst character: Arietta and for like the exact same reasons Anise.  Fail.

Best PC in-game: Guy, because he is the easiest to control due to being the most similar to Tales Swordsman defaults who are pretty much universally the easiest to play in their respective games.
Worst PC in-game:  Anise.  She is not worth using for physicals and it takes to long for her to learn a decent spell.

Favorite moment:  Child drowning after the town of people dies.  Not pulling punches and showing some semblance of the grim reality of what just happened is win.
Least favorite moment:  Anything with Asch plot.

Game: Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 10/10 - One of my favorite games. It has its problems, but it stands out among its brethren (Tales games and JRPGs in general). You have been warned that this is my bias.

Best feature/element: The setting is an intriguing one. Even minor characters have pretty decent characterization (The Malkuth and Kimlascan generals' romance stands out here). Moreover, the game is logical narrative about a world where the Future is (literally) written in stone for everyone to read. And they read it and follow it daily, with a world-encompassing religion built around it. The characters' individual reactions to this part of the story in particular really stood out to me.
Worst feature/element: Battle system was slower than I liked. Though playing the game multi-player made for some good times. Especially when we were able to pull off huge FOF effect/Mystic Arte combos. Still, Battle system was a bit too slow. Abuse-able map glitch broke the game.

Best character: Objectively, Luke, Tear, and Dist get this spot. Jade is really high up there, too. Van was an enjoyable final villain, and deserves some mention here. The rest of the cast were tropes, most of which were well-done. Even Ion was fun.
Worst character: Sync was pretty bland, though I can see him being subverted for great effect. I still don't quite see all the anti-Anise hate. I think there's an overall distaste for little girl characters in this community. Which... when you consider 90% of the pedophilic fanservice associated with characters like that in JRPGs (and Anime), it's completely understandable and well-founded. Anise, though, I found her to be at least mildly entertaining and I felt sympathy for her during her -quote- Fail moments.

Best PC in-game: Guy is pretty awesome to destroy the game with. I personally enjoyed playing as Tear and my brother destroyed everything with Anise (o_O!). The whole cast is pretty balanced.
Worst PC in-game: Logically, I can see why Anise ends up here, she's the hardest to use. But once she gets the TP-refilling doll, she's pretty monstrous. Also, Asch exists which takes the spot away from Anise.

Favorite moment: Victory dialogue was fun. Also, I took particular note of the cinematography the designers employed in many of the cutscenes. It was pretty understated, but it was there. Kind of an unfair advantage to the 2D games, but I appreciated it. Also, the use of the Score as almost a character unto itself was a part of the story that wasn't lost on me. Anise and Natalia's banter was always fun, too, on the lighter side of the story.
Least favorite moment: Game played out a little too long towards the end. Parts with Sync played too much with the melodramatic. Earlygame Luke could irritate immensely... though I suppose that was the point?

Is this alive?  Seems like the talk has died down.  Results (hope I'm not stepping on your territory, Shaley-poo):

Tales of the Abyss

Rating: 8.17 (15 raters total)
For the Zennies: 8.99 (13 raters total)

Consensus: Anise wins worst PC in-game, and is pretty high for worst character as well (with Sync and Asch too).  World Map "wins" worst feature/element.  Most everything else is kind of all over the place, although the cast (Luke/Tear specifically) get praise as best feature a good deal.

Not bad overall.  I was expecting a decent ranking, and some of the general thoughts turned out about as I expected.

Don't know if you want to continue this or no Shale.  If not, I'll be glad to take over.

Not a problem.

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 10/10.  It's Disgaea with more stuff to do, and with a different feel.  Changes things, some for the better, some for the worse, but overall kicks ass.

Best feature/element: Redone battle system.  All the classes are now balanced (well, except for the Togabito, and even they have theoretical use) and useful in some way throughout the game.  Healers level up easier now.  There's more variety in each class, and even the plot characters.  Tower attacks have been added, weapons are a HELL OF A LOT MORE BALANCED, monsters don't suck...yeah.  More combined arms mix and lots of other cool stuff.  Great game in the battle system regards.
Worst feature/element: Game's humour value and character appeal is down from the original, present mostly in the non-required portions of the game.  The game is more serious than the original, though this is not bad by any means.  It's just a bit of a let-down compared to the original.  I suppose outside of that, I can't think of any major feature that's bad.

Best character: Uh...yeah, what I said above applies here.  Probably have to go with Axel, who maintains the humour value and character fun from Disgaea, but still works in the more serious setting.  Honourable mention goes to Mom, she who is a bette summoner than Yuna.
Worst character: Mmm...Yukimaru?  I don't know, none inspire any hate (more apathy than hate), but Yukimaru's 'zam thing was...not as cool as I would have expected Disgaea writers to make it out to be. Felt forced and tacked on, and made me not want to listen to her half the time.  She's also kind of boring overall too >_>

Best PC in-game: Mmm...of the plot characters?  Adell.  Tough overall on all stats, and his special ability was useful overall. Tink gets honourable mentioned for Item World whoring due to his insane movement and ability to ignore zones of control.  Granted, much worse in an actual fight, so...  Of the generics...wow.  Not sure.  Archers are pretty fantastic in this, though, and Thieves are MUCH BETTER.  One of them, probably.
Worst PC in-game: Mmm...of the plot characters, I really don't know...Etna comes late, but builds up fast.  Tink I already mentioned.  Yukimaru...is good overall, though her special is marginally useful at best.  Hanako and Taro are the last two, and of them...probably Taro.  Hanako's stat-busts I found more useful than Taro's stat-ups, and her damage was a bit better...and she reduced monster damage, which meant she was more durable than she looked in practice.  Togabito's are the worst of the generics, easily.

Favorite moment: Cutscene after the first battle with Laharl (post-game optional stuff).  That was hilarious.
Least favorite moment: 'zam'

Suggestions: Disgaea next time?  Better playership, just as much division as TotA!  We did it already, but it has been a while.

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 8.5/10

Best feature/element: Improved gameplay.
Worst feature/element: Core cast is less amusing.

Best character: Axel. Honorary mention to Mid-Boss, who doesn't get enough screentime to merit this award.
Worst character: Final boss. Failure, intended to be as such, but failure regardless.

Best PC in-game: TINK. By far.
Worst PC in-game: Etna. Level 1 at almost endgame no thanks.

Favorite moment: "See the ending" ending.
Least favorite moment: Shinra Tower filler before the top.

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 8/10

Best feature/element: Relevant and interesting plot twists.
Worst feature/element: Geopanels.  Not NEARLY as much venom in this as for Disgaea 1 though.

Best character: Rozy.
Worst character: Hanako?  And she's merely okay.

Best PC in-game: Generic Healer.  Buffs are fun.  Taro is also godlike.  Especially with Generic Healer to Buff him.  Yeeesssss.
Worst PC in-game: Tink.

Favorite moment: "Shut up and believe in this."  VSM needs to finish this game.
Least favorite moment: There was probably one really bad geopanel moment, but I don't remember it.

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 7/10. Should probably be higher but this works for now.

Best feature/element: Much improved gameplay works.
Worst feature/element: The villains were all terrible.

Best character: Adell and Rozalin were both good.
Worst character:  The final was meant to fail, so that works. Mm. Hanako was trash. I loathe loli fanservice characters. Going with Hanako.

Best PC in-game: Skull Mage or Adell. Magic got really good in this game.
Worst PC in-game: Hanako.

Favorite moment: See Cmdr.
Least favorite moment:  Geopanel fight in the arena. It sucked.

Best feature/element: HEALERS GET EXP FINALLY
Worst feature/element: Still don't get a lot of EXP for non-kills.

Best character: Rozalin.

Best PC in-game: Adell?  Rozalin's probably second?  I'm not counting generics though.
Worst PC in-game: Uh... Hanako?  I don't know.

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 10/10. Probably one of my favourite games of all time, and one of the reasons I'll eventually have to bite the bullet and get a PS3 for Dis 3.

Best feature/element: Cast diversification means that the Majin-esque class isn't the only one worth using later on.
Worst feature/element: The requirements to get to several endgame items or classes are both annoying and faq-bait.

Best character: Axel. Probably the closest regular cast member to Dis1's feel. And to think I hated him the first time I saw him... HM to Adell.
Worst character: Hanako.

Best PC in-game: Adell. Gets in quick and kills things dead. Probably got between 45 to 50% of my overall kills in the first run-through.
Worst PC in-game: Etna works. Appears late, low-levelled, and majoring in Spears (my least favorite in-game weapon type).

Favorite moment: Whenever White Tiger started playing.
Least favorite moment: Shinra Tower.

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 7 (This feels a bit low, but unless I play it again I probably won't change it. Why did I get rid of my copy in the first place? Argh.)

Best feature/element: Lots and lots of post-game.
Worst feature/element: Geo-panels, and they're not even that bad.

Best character: The Dark Hero, obviously. Etna comes close.
Worst character: TINK DIE IN A FIRE

Best PC in-game: Skull Mage. Adell/Rozy come close.
Worst PC in-game: Tink. Counting Item World? Hanako. Never really saw the need for buffs, since my Skull Mage could kill pretty much anything with ease.

Favorite moment: The Colosseum fight against Axel. White Tiger really made that fight awesome. I was also a bit underleveled, which helped.
Least favorite moment: The Geo-Panel tower. Annoying without any actual difficulty.

Suggestions: Kingdom Hearts 2?

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 10/10 - Great game, though I liked Makai Kingdom better for its general zaniness, Disgaea 2 seemed like a good game to follow MK.

Best feature/element: More balanced gameplay, ability to turn off animations made powerlevelling about 5000x more efficient (see: more fun). Also, the story was charming, though the best parts tended to be in the bonus content.
Worst feature/element: The humorous parts of the story didn't always mesh well with the serious parts of the story.

Best character: Rosalyn had the most depth, surprisingly - one of my favorite female leads. However, the original trio from Disgaea 1 stole every scene they were in. Also, Mom needs to guest star in every future humorous N1 release.
Worst character: Yukimaru? No one was really offensive, but Yukimaru was kind of boring. I also would have appreciated more closure on her story with Rosalyn

Best PC in-game: Adell was great, always felt worth using him. Taro can solo the game. Tink was great for item world abuse.
Worst PC in-game: Hanako. I tried REALLY hard to use all the story characters, but it was like the game was punishing me for using her.

Favorite moment: Oddly enough, the really serious aspects of the story stand out here - The game never patronizes the player and outright beats you with its 'secret plotpoints' - such as the nebulousness of Adell's birth, which while increasingly obvious throughout the story, was still a neat idea. Also, the 'big twist' at the end of the story was well-handled, and kept fairly un-obvious throughout most of the story. On the humorous side of the story, the Prism Rangers bonus stage was the only laugh-out-loud moment really.
Least favorite moment: Probably Yukimaru and her brother's scenes... Felt extraneous without adding anything to the story.

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 9/10. Extraordinarily playable even at it's worst.

Best feature/element: The improved game play and character balance. Everything feels much more thought out, adding a rich layer to the already good core game play.
Worst feature/element: The story maps. They tended to drag out too long.

Best character: Rozalin. I don't much like her as a person or character, but she's well portrayed as the game goes on.
Worst character: Laharl. His development from the good end of Disgaea vanishes in favor of making him a running gag. He doesn't need to be all love'n'kisses, but destroying Veldime? Uh, what?

Best PC in-game: Adell. He's a good, tanky frontliner throughout the game. This works pretty well in Disgaea land.
Worst PC in-game: Hanako.

Favorite moment: The ending.
Least favorite moment: Pretty much when Laharl showed up.

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 7/10.  It kept my attention, despite its N1 combat (done slightly better, I'll admit).  So I guess it had qualities, or I was just really bored.

Best feature/element: Voice acting, writing, etc.  It's N1.
Worst feature/element: Gameplay.  Not bad enough to keep me from getting through it, since I was playing at a time when I was usually pretty tired and didn't mind the mindlessness of it, but yeah.  Grind-for-higher-numbers is not fun on its own.

Best character: Sure, let's say Axel.  I liked Tardo, too!  Cast was pretty good.
Worst character: Stupid boring ninja twins.

Best PC in-game: Adell was great but uh Rozalin was clearly better.
Worst PC in-game: Monsters that aren't Tink?  Uh, I guess Hanako works.

Favorite moment: I dunno.  Arbitrarily, I choose when the prinnies quit Etna's service after she'd been de-powered.
Least favorite moment: Stupid ninja stuff.
Title: Re: Two-Minute Game Reviews: Revived!

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 3/10.  N1 combat, despite being slightly improved is still beyond horrible.  I was tempted to give it a 2, but that is where I would put Disgaea 1 and this is slightly improved or something.

Best feature/element: Voice acting.  This fails when this is the only thing you bring to the floor.
Worst feature/element: Gameplay.

Best character: Axel I guess, not that I got very far.
Worst character: Taro was annoying from what I played

Best PC in-game: Cannot comment.
Worst PC in-game: Also cannot comment.

Favorite moment: Turning the game off.
Least favorite moment: Item world, again.  Edit - With triple digit levelled pirates when you are level 10.  Fuck this game.

My ratings:

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 7.5/10.

Best feature/element: Overall playability. Like Disgaea, it's a game I can pick up and playfor hours at a timeand have fun with it, and without Disgaea's awesome cast, that takes center stage.
Worst feature/element: The occasional totally retarded Geopanel setup.

Best character: Rozy.
Worst character: Hanako barely outfails Taro. Dominatrix fanthings for the lose.

Best PC in-game: Adell. Damage bonus on high-level enemies is love when everything outlevels you.
Worst PC in-game: Hanako.

Favorite moment: Flonezilla. Best move ever.
Least favorite moment: The retarded Geopanel setup in the last chapter.

Final ratings!

Game: Disgaea 2

Rating: 7.77/10

Best feature/element: Improved gameplay and battle system.
Worst feature/element: Gameplay issues, particularly geopanels. N1 games, polarizing? NAAAAAAH.
Weakened characters and humor compared to Disgaea 1 is a reasonably close second.

Best character: Axel.
Worst character: Hanako, Taro and Yukimaru basically tie.

Best PC in-game: Adell.
Worst PC in-game: Hanako. Apparently mages who can't use staffs aren't very popular!

Favorite moment: Not much consensus here. Ending-related things got the most votes with three.
Least favorite moment: A tie between Shinra Tower and Yukimaru's scenes, again with three each.

Game: Wild ARMs 5

Rating: 7/10. Reasonably solid one.

Best feature/element: Return of the hex system; even when neutered
Worst feature/element: World map / search system works. Why did you bring this crap back, guys? WA4 was the bestest.

Best character: Nightburn? Mm, yeah, he ended up delivering very well.
Worst character: Volsung. Not a contest.

Best PC in-game: Avril. Best magic when that matters most, best Attack when that matters most.
Worst PC in-game: Chuck.

Favorite moment: The entirety of Greg's flashback. This is the only time in recent memory RPG storytelling really got to me.
Least favorite moment: The whole nonsensical bullshit surrounding the final battle with the millions of golems and Captain Bart and giant mecha facing off and UGH.

Game: Wild ARMs 5

Rating: 8/10

Best feature/element: Errr... probably hex system, for all that I'd probably hype the characters more than most others.
Worst feature/element: Search system? At least it's not WA3.

Best character: I really liked the PC cast in general, and there were a few good NPCs and villains, but I have a lot of love for Rebecca.
Worst character: Volsung. We don't need these villains anymore! We never needed them! Just die!

Best PC in-game: Dean. Sonic Vision IS SO a good use of your FP. Combined with Punching Glove especially. Carol being the best Sea Medium user gets honorable mention.
Worst PC in-game: Chuck felt the least necessary. Never got anything out of his ability, had other physical fighters.

Favorite moment: Johnny Badasseed/Rebecca & Avril before that one Tower/Greg flashbacks.
Least favorite moment: Probably something involving Volsung. So much fail.

Game: Wild ARMs 5

Rating: 6/10. Hex system is good, coat rack characters are SUPER FUCKING BAD, like Wild Arms 3 bad.

Best feature/element: The hex system now has battlefields that are not a perfect seven-hex honeycomb design!
Worst feature/element: COATRACK CHARACTERS. FUCK YOU.

Best character: Nightburn, I think. His characters suffers from "too much too soon" but he's still the best. Second-place goes to Greg.
Worst character: Volsung. Everything about Volsung fucking fails.

Best PC in-game: Greg. Greg can be a mage, or he can be an invincible bulwark of unkillability, which is what I had him do.
Worst PC in-game: Carol. Carol is awful. Worse than Chuck.

Favorite moment: Nightburn's introductory video in Laila Belle. It was so... high-production value PR fodder, and it was awesome.
Least favorite moment: Volsung being possessed by ghosts with negative emotions or whatever. What the fuck is this shit, goddamn Scientology?

Game: Wild ARMs 5

Rating: 7/10.

Best feature/element: Avril.
Worst feature/element: Mediums/character diversity.  Either give us more or make each one more interesting, and don't give us that small a stat spread to work with!  Grr.

Best character: Avril
Worst character: Kartikeya

Best PC in-game: Avril
Worst PC in-game: Chuck

Favorite moment: Right after Avril gets her memories back.
Least favorite moment: I dunno, the first half of the game is a total blur to me.  For stuff I do remember, probably the Golem fight.  Took entirely too long.

Worst PC in-game: Chuck. Last to join in a cast this similar doesn't bode well especially when you really bring nothing with you.

Best feature/element: Hex system is hexy.
Worst feature/element: "YOU CAN DO ANYTHING AS LONG AS YOU DON'T GIVE UP"

Worst character: Dean.  Chuck doesn't even count as a character.

Best PC in-game: Avril
Worst PC in-game: Chuck
Title: Re: Two-Minute Game Reviews: Revived!

Game: Wild ARMs 5

Rating: 8/10.  It...is a good game, but it's nowhere near as good as WA4.  Better than WA3, WA2, worse than WA1 and WA4.  Fairly average overall for the series, but that's above average, and it owns WA3 and WA2 by a lot, so...this works.

Best feature/element: Rebecca.  Kept a drive to play the game - smart, sassy, cool, great journal entires and quotes, kicked Dean's ass...yeah.  Badass.  She's the reason I kept playing.
Worst feature/element: Dean.  Everything everyone has said so far about worst features?  IT RELATES TO HIM.  The best part about him is POGO-SHOVEL...which you lose 2 hours in.  Fucking pile of shit character.  BURN IN HELL.

Best character: Rebecca.  Yes.
Worst character: DEAN.  DEAN FUCKING DEAN.

Best PC in-game: Mmm...the top 3 are probably Rebecca, Avril, Greg.  High stats in offensive areas (speed, attack power, magic) are the best part of the game.  Rebecca has speed and a much better special ability, so...I'll give it to her.
Worst PC in-game: Dean.  Sonic Vision sucks.  I made good use of Chuck's special, which was easier to work with (take damage, get stronger!).  Also, he's prettier.

Favorite moment: POGO-SHOVEL.  Just hilariously bad, but funny.  Funny how DEAN has one of my favourite moments.
Least favorite moment: Dean getting an erection whenever golems were mentioned.  Now, least favourite moment being related to Dean makes sense.

I'm all for Disgaea or Persona 3 next >_>  Disgaea primarily, since...more voters.

Rating: 7/10.  Decent game but clear step down compared to 3 and 4.

Best feature/element: The Gob Dungeon. People are crazy to say there are better features than this in this game (this isn't to say that there are other good features, but this takes the cake by far <.<)
Worst feature/element: Search System.  First off, I never really minded it in 2/3/ACF.  THAT said, WA5 has DQ8 style world map and hidden treasures everywhere...while these things aren't necessarily bad, they mesh HORRIBLY with Search.

Best character: Elvis.  If only for the amusement value.
Worst character: Volsung. Yeah hard to really argue this.  While Kartikeya was pretty awful a character, he was a very effective role, which helps him some.  Volsung didn't even have that.

Best PC in-game: Avril or Greg...I'll say Avril wins since DOuble DP > AUTO GUARD! (use to think the otherway around until I learned WA5 Defend was Double Defense instead of traditional Half Damage -_-)
Worst PC in-game: Chuck.  Good special completely wasted by stats that don't complement it at all.

Favorite moment: The entire Gob Dungeon.  I stand by this being one of the best moments in any RPG.
Least favorite moment: Hmm...I'll go with the BS Deus Ex Machina stunt the game pulls at the end just to force the Time Loop.  No, I am not a fan of Zeromus popping up out of nowhere cause he can RIGHT AFTER YOU KICKED HIS ASS just to start that.

Rating: 1.5/10

Best feature/element: Avril.
Worst feature/element: The rest of the plot. Dear God did the plot fail.

Best character: Avril.
Worst character: Dean. He's a functional retard. Barring Dean, you can plop down most of the baddies here too.

Best PC in-game: Dean. Double Critical is fun to twink out.
Worst PC in-game: Chuck.

Favorite moment: The good Avril plot moments. These times made up for some of the game's many failings. Oh, and seeing Yulie on the adult magazine. That's such a fanwink moment and a funny one.
Least favorite moment: Everything from Tower O onward.

Best PC in-game: Avril.
Worst PC in-game: Chuck. Even less close than worst character!

Favorite moment: No consensus at all. The only bits that got multiple votes were Avril scenes and Johnny Appleseed being awesome.

Best feature/element: The characters and the interplay between Flonne/Etna/Laharl. That shit is golden.
Worst feature/element: Dated gameplay. Playing Etna mode on the PSP was a sharp reminder of how much Disgaea 2 improved the mix.

Best character: Mmm. I'll say Etna today.
Worst character: Vulcanus. He's still above average and amusing!

Best PC in-game: Laharl.
Worst PC in-game: Tink.

Favorite moment: The Earth ending.
Least favorite moment: None offhand.

Game: Disgaea

Rating: 10/10.  Love this game so much.  Funny and fucking addicting.

Best feature/element: Characters.  Story actually plays a part in this - every character is unique and awesome in some way, and the mix makes everything work so well, despite being a generic story about love.
Worst feature/element: Mmm...honestly, with a replay and better knowledge of the mechanics, handling things isn't too hard.  I guess the worst feature is that some classes are just plain useless, and there's no balance in some things.

Best character: Mmm...Damn.  Etna, I guess.  All are awesome in their own way.
Worst character: Maderas and/or Hoggmeiser.  Both one-shot wonders than do jack crap after introduction.  Not even that great either.

Best PC in-game: Majin, Ronin before then.  Marjoly and Prier(e) are great, but are monsters, so...
Worst PC in-game: Male Clerics.  Not necessary to unlock any class at all, plus being healers means they're literally worthless.

Favorite moment: ...wow.  Uh...Chapter 6 was badass incarnate, so that wins it.
Least favorite moment: Mmm...probably have to say...uh...damn.  Honestly can't think of a moment I didn't like.

Worst feature/element: Monotony of the gameplay.

Best character: I can never pick. Etna, Gordon, Laharl, Mid-Boss...Hatbot says Laharl today.
Worst character: Vulcanus.

Best PC in-game: Never did enough grinding for Majin, so Laharl.

Rating: 6/10.  Really funny, and great cast...but little else.

Best feature/element: The cast.
Worst feature/element: Geopanels.  Go die in fire.
Honorable Mention to Item world.  More offensive than Geo Panels, but forced to work with a lot less, so it evens out to being less annoying, but still horrid.

Best character: I'll go with Midboss.  Every scene with him was just a riot.
Worst character: Maderas.  They build something up for him...then completely drop him in Chap 4 or 5.  At least Hoggmeiser has the excuse of being a randomly tossed in nobody for shits.

Best PC in-game: Laharl, I guess.  Uniques were nice and varied or something, and good weapon levels across the board.
Worst PC in-game: Flonne.  Completely worthless before Holy Arrows, below average after then.

Favorite moment: Prism Rangers works for me.
Least favorite moment: Chap 7 and 8.  Chap 7 was just childish humor that was "oh you've got to be kidding me" level, combined with just being idiotic filler (compared to Chap 11 or whatever the Picnic Basket one was where it was obvious filler, but generally hilarious.)  Chap 8 wasn't total filler, but so freaking boring at the same time, and did in 4 maps what they COULD have done in one.

Rating: 2/10.

Best feature/element: Humour. It's not always my style, but it's good at the style it chooses.
Worst feature/element: BATTLE SYSTEM. Geopanels, huge random damage, item world, poor documentation, no damage/hit projection in a 21st century SRPG, idiotic AI, Exp-only-for-kills, it's all insulting.

Best character: Etna. While others are also good, Etna's a sarcastic woman after my own heart.
Worst character: Thursday. Are 50's sci-fi movies notable enough to deserve a character who does nothing more than pay homage to them? No. Lamington also sucks because I can't ever recall him being funny and Disgaea plot is stupid when it is serious.

Best PC in-game: Ronins. Much more smash than the plot PCs, and not fucking aftergame. This isn't even especially close to me.
Worst PC in-game: Since I've never looked closely at the shittier generics, Kurtis. Obviously the worst plot PC.

Favorite moment: Oh hell. One of the mid-chapter breaks.
Least favorite moment: Forced item world! Though C7-8 as a whole blow, too.

Game: Disgaea

Rating: 10 - Only game where I enjoyed grinding. The challenge of geo-panels made for some interesting levelling abuse.

Best feature/element: The writing, the cast.
Worst feature/element: EXP-for-kills-only, inability to turn off lengthy battle animations

Best character: Flonne, the best parody of a lead female RPG character out there. Also could be sympathetic in serious moments. Etna/Laharl/Gordon/Vyers are also pretty awesome.
Worst character: Vulcanus? Lamington?

Best PC in-game: Laharl for PCs, Priere for uniques, Ronin for main game generics, and Majin for everything including aftergame
Worst PC in-game: Thursday, or Male Cleric for generics

Favorite moment: Next Episode previews, or "Nin Nin"
Least favorite moment: Vulcanus was a pretty lame villain and didn't even parody lame villains very well. So any of his scenes.

Rating: 10/10 - See Disgaea 2.

Best feature/element: The cast, probably one of the better ones out there.
Worst feature/element: The huge spike inbetween CoO and the other optional maps for level requirement.

Best character: Etna.
Worst character: Hoggmeiser. I'll take wasted potential with one good moment (Madheras) over no potential any day.

Best PC in-game: Laharl, I suppose.
Worst PC in-game: Hoggmeiser.

Favorite moment: Episode 6 as a whole.
Least favorite moment: Hero's Tomb. That map just bugged me so much.

Game: Disgaea

Rating: 6.91.

Best feature/element: Characters, and it's not close.
Worst feature/element: Gameplay issues, with Geopanels getting the most individual attention.

Best character: Etna. Flonne and Mid-Boss are nonclose seconds.
Worst character: Vulcanus in a low-scoring competition.

Best PC in-game: Laharl smash.
Worst PC in-game: Kurtis, with Flonne in second.

Favorite moment: The dramatic appearance of the Prism Rangers, with next-episode previews after that.
Least favorite moment: LOL horse penis, followed by the Item World.

Game: Seiken Densetsu 3

Rating: 7/10. The ultimate popcorn SNES game. Short, breezy, and with a lot of variety in your party. Definitely one of the great two player RPG's.

Best feature/element: Combat. It was really fun, and the bosses had variety.
Worst feature/element: FAIRIE. DIE.

Best character: Kevin? Uh. There really wasn't a cast.
Worst character: FAIRIE

Best PC in-game: Kevin. Utter fucking smash. It was easy enough to control day/night as well.
Worst PC in-game: Duran. Whoo boy, did he suck.

Favorite moment: Snowfields. Memorable for the pretty design and class changes.
Least favorite moment: Ending. Shut the fuck up Fairie. I can't believe she got rewarded for an entire lifetime's worth of blundering and hiding.

Best character: Lise was kinda cool I guess
Worst character: If you don't know who I'm putting here then you haven't been on the forum very long. Fairie you moron

Best PC in-game: Kevin
Worst PC in-game: Duran

Favorite moment: Those brief, beautiful moments when Fairie was not around.
Least favorite moment: While there are many, many similar moments that could take this place, I would have to say the ending, which made my already simmering hatred of Fairie boil over into a neverending chain reaction of fury.

Game: Seiken Densetsu 3

Rating: 2/10. WORSE THAN FF8.

Best feature/element: The class system is, in theory, a good idea.
Worst feature/element: Shitty controls in a gameplay-focused action game. Because who cares about combat when you have SD3's godly characters and atmosphere? Honorable mention to dungeon designs and the retarded amount of grinding you're expected to do for lategame class changes and equipment, in that order.

Best character: Kevin's father? The PCs are all one step up from silent mains so they're sure as hell not getting this, and the only NPCs I remember are him and Fairie.
Worst character: Fairie. SHUT UP AND DIE YOU MORON.

Best PC in-game: Kevin. SMASH.
Worst PC in-game: Lise. Thanks for buffing Kevin, now kindly stop trying to help. (Note: The only PCs I saw were Priestess Carlie, Baskar Kevin and Valkyrie Lise.)

Favorite moment: The credits.
Least favorite moment: "No I said aim up STOP PICKING TARGETS ON YOUR OWN KEVIN GAH I HATE YOU."

Game: Seiken Densetsu 3

Rating: 5.5/10.  Eh...Honestly, I think I prefer SoM to it.  SD3 feels really slow and really boring at points.  The villains are totally bland, and much of the game feels like a chore.  Combat isn't great.  This score might be too high...so let's lower it a bit more....game has not aged well at all, and I really can't see myself replaying it, unless in a group.  Game's not bad, but...definitely not top tier SNES.

Best feature/element: Multiple characters and paths.  Good replayability and some semblence of uniqueness here.
Worst feature/element: Combat.  What a boring chore.

Best character: Hawk.  Everyone else sucked balls.
Worst character: ...a lot.  Honestly, at least Fairie did something.  Let's hype the final bosses here - how much plot did they have, again?  Honestly, a lot of character fall here.

Best PC in-game: Hawk or Lise.  Hawk had great damage and the awesome MT stat-downs in his classes, and some cheap MT damage.  Lise was similar, with the great summons she had.  Most characters are damn good and balanced here, but these two stood out a lot to me.  Teamwork for the win, as these two work great in groups and even better together.
Worst PC in-game: Duran?  Honestly, I can't even call him bad for the game's standards.  Angela's not amazing either, but she theoretically has random killing, so...

Favorite moment: ...none.  I can't remember enjoying a scene or moment in the game.
Least favorite moment: ...same again.  Too much apathy to hate anything, I guess.

Hey, let's do Persona 3 next!

Rating: 4/10? Something like that. I totally see the hate, but eh. Found it all right as a fluff game I guess.

Best feature/element: The choices presented by the party and class system.
Worst feature/element: I dunno. No one thing really jumps out at me, it's just pretty underwhelming at everything that isn't aesthetic (good graphics for SNES, decent music). The plot is pretty insulting with how the supposed split paths are in fact identical retreads of each other, and the main cast is a bunch of cardboard. Something in there is probably the worst.

Best character: Fairie, because her effect on Super/Trips is funny as hell. Seriously, no character on this cast had any real impact on me, though Beast King works as a serious answer from what little I remember in all three of his scenes.
Worst character: Koren?

Best PC in-game: Kevin. Smaaash indeed. The buff characters can be replaced by other buff characters, or by items. Nobody comes close to Kevin's offence, however. And he even has game-best HP and utility.
Worst PC in-game: Duran.

Favorite moment: Finally beating Lugar on the bazillionth try.
Least favorite moment: Learning that he was a stupid trick.

Rating: EDIT: 7/10.  Whoops, forgot to rate it <_<;

Best feature/element: The Different Penultimate Dungeons and Final Bosses were neat.
Worst feature/element: Anything related to plot or writing.

Best character: Beast King; only character with any sort of worth at all in this cast.  Even Deathjester was wasted.
Worst character: Koren. Lame Cliche in a game with bad writing.

Best PC in-game: Hawk.  Yes, Buff PCs can be replaced by items...which means Lise gets covered only.  Getting items for Debuffing is much harder, and Hawk has other tricks paired with good offense at any moment.
Worst PC in-game: Duran. Yeah, don't know why I use to support him as being not bad; he really is just a Kevin Wannabe.

Favorite moment: Hawk's kissing Lise, only cause it made me crack up the first time.
Least favorite moment: I would say Angela's ending in her own path cause of the whole "OMG ANGELAxDURAN IS SUCH A CANON PAIRING ITS SO OBVIOUS!!!" hype...but that scene is kind of funny if you do an all girl team, and that reasoning isn't really fair.
So instead, I'll just say the ending in general. Really needed to be more than just "Fairy lives, 2 scenes for each character you have, credits role!" and the Triangle Story thing is completely wasted for any character not Angela or Kevin since their endings never change.

Game: Seiken Densetsu 3

Rating: 7/10? - I can't really use a plot sucks excuse since for S03 I mainly completely ignore the plot and give it high marks anyway. Same applies here I guess only SD3's lots of other stuff isn't quite as good as S03

Best feature/element: Going to agree w/th DHE here
*runs* xD
Worst feature/element: Duran.

Best character:  Hawk. Ninja!
Worst character: Angela, Duran, Angela, Duran ... Angela is smexy at least so Dylan gets it.

Best PC in-game: Kevin. My Kevin/Carle duo was generally more awesme than my Hawk/Angela team so yeah.
Worst PC in game: Close call between Duran and Lise =/ Duran gets it I guess since Lise loves that I have a soft spot for support type characters in general. Besides I never really extensively used her fully.

Hell if I remember favourite or least favourite moments.

Game: Seiken Densetsu 3

Rating: 6/10. It isn't great, but it does what it sets out to do really well.  I like it for far more than it really is.  Like most of the Mana games really.

Best feature/element: Replayability.  If you like it, it is super easy to replay.
Worst feature/element: Seed randomisation.

Best character: Beast King, cause he is randomly a complete and total prick.
Worst character: Fairie I guess, meh.

Best PC in-game: Hawk.  Kevin rocks face, Kevin does early game better than Hawk for sure.  This is also overlooking that Hawk is second best at the job they do at that point (Duran without spells and before people are hitting high strength caps isn't anything amazing.  Servicable but nothing amazing).  After that point he is super utility and slots into absolutely any other pairing of characters just fine, he can suffice for your physical brute force if you are running one of those really weird low physical groups, can be your caster if you pick up Duran and Kevin at the same time, compliments Lise in the most brutal fashion you can gather even has a fair bit of synergy with Angela which only Lise can really bring to the table.  THAT is where I would say he dominates.  Yeah you can say Kevin is so brutal you could make the same argument, but the difference is not so overwhelming between having him and not having him that it sticks, Hawk works with the groups rather than just being so strong.
Worst PC in-game: Carlie, sure she trivialises the game, but so do the healing items, she is also nothing but a walking set of items that takes up an offensive party member slot in 2 of the three routes.  In Kevin/Carlie story of course she is a bit stronger due to the dungeon being made for her.  Here is how much I place on that though.  MEH.  Everyone else brings SOMETHING to the table that I ponder while juggling groups.  Carlie never does.

Favorite moment: Your second play through hitting Land of Mana for the first time in the game and seeing how the plots overlap even if the difference is massively minor is a nice thing I found when it happened to me.  I was also like 14 at the time though.
Least favorite moment: I give sword away oh just doomed the world.

Rating: 9/10. SD3 is a fun game to play through.

Best feature/element: Holy shit what PCs play different, and classes make them different? NO COATRACK SYNDROME AT ALL?
Worst feature/element: Eh, probably killing the other mana beasts before the last one (which is generally a BA dungeon).

Best character: Eh, it's not really a big character game. I prefer Hawkeye because of his superficial resemblance to the World's Premier Adventurer. Or Angela, because she's a whore.
Worst character: Jesus... Riesz, maybe Charlotte. I can't recall caring much for either of them, but I generally avoid using either of them.

Best PC in-game: Kevin during the night (uh, duh) or Hawkeye during the day (has the best overall stats, lots of useful skills)
Worst PC in-game: Riesz. Riesz brings stat up OR down spells (but not both) and unlike Hawkeye, hits once and has the worst overall stats.

Best PC in-game: Probably Kevin at first... any of them are good in their own right, though.

Game: Persona 3

Rating: 9/10. Nearly perfect, dragged down by a few flaws.

Best feature/element: Battle system is nearly perfect.
Worst feature/element: Game tends to drag during the latter parts.

Best character: Junpei. He starts out as a generic goofball, but the game shits on him so much in pretty much every way and he reacts to it like a normal human and he winds up being a pretty likable character.
Worst character: Fuuka, I guess. Meh.

Best PC in-game: Minato. This isn't really debatable unless you ignore him.
Worst PC in-game: Junpei. Starts out weak, most the early bosses hit his weakness, so he's quite easy to keep underleveled for most of the game. He does get better later on, but by then there's no real point since Koromaru can do everything he does and has ID and no elemental weaknesses.

Favorite moment: Summoning Orpheus for the first time. Pretty powerful scene.
Least favorite moment: That scene with Yukari at the train. Just sort of out of nowhere lol upskirt nonsense, just a rare example of the game doing humor and failing.

Game: Persona 3

Rating: 3/10

Best feature/element: Characters?  I actually liked them.  Everything else had potential but failed at it.
Worst feature/element: LOL MAIN DIES = GAEM OVAR in a game where crits are semi-common and deal effectively at least 3x damage.

Best character: Uh... Mitsuru, I guess?  I liked all of the PCs, really.
Worst character: Minato.  Doesn't exist.  While this isn't bad, it's worse than people who are actually good.

Best PC in-game: Minato.  Only weakness is the fact he has to be alive at all times, but he's still the most useful, easily.  Second would be Yukari (healing) or Mitsuru (healing AND damage).  The game's fairly balanced outside of Minato though.
Worst PC in-game: Junpei.  Too much emphasis on physical stuff.

Game: Persona 3

Rating: 8/10. Very good. It has definite flaws in the system, but awesome otherwise.

Best feature/element: Characters. A game that features all PCs being likable to semi likable. Challenge was also good although some stuff wasn't as well documented as I had hoped.
Worst feature/element: Secondning Tal on the Main dies = Game over in game where Critical hits are common and effectively robs you of a turn. That dragged the game play a bit. It was challenging at points even without this "feature" kicking in. Honerable mention to the pacing mid game which was a little slow.

Best character: Akihiko, Junpei, Mitsuru. All three are very cool. If I could choose only one, probably Akihiko. Does the entire job of what the designers wanted (" a cool senior") without being arrogant or coming off the wrong way.
Worst character: Its either Jin or Takaya. Takaya is at least Jesus with a gun. Jin has nothing but emo.

Best PC in-game: Minato. This is a no contest.
Worst PC in-game: Aigis I think? Granted, I didn't use her long enough to get her good skills. Pierce resistance just didn't seem as useful as the other various resists characters had to offer. Also blowing HP to do 15 more points of damage = argh.

Favorite moment: The initiation into SEES was very good. Entire first two months up to when Fuuka joins up is really well done in general.
Least favorite moment: Takaya/Jin's entire schpeel about wanting to see the world to end. God damn it. Stop being Sync fanboys.

Game: Persona 3

Rating: 9

Best feature/element: Social Links.  I enjoy seeing each character's little arc, and it gives you an idea of who you're fighting for, which is something missing in a lot of RPGs.
Worst feature/element: Main character being vulnerable to charm. This would be fine if Yukari could actually use her charm healing spell, but she can't, so it's pretty much mandatory to grind a person for the charm blocking accessory.

Best character: Shinjiro.
Worst character: Do the Velvet room characters count? No? Jin, I guess.

Best PC in-game: Main. Easily.
Worst PC in-game: Junpei, yeah. Pretty much just an inferior version of Koromaru.

Favorite moment: Final Battle. Woo music.
Least favorite moment: Anything involving Junpei's obsession with Chidori.

Best feature/element: Pacing.  You can move at the Tartutus at your own rate.  School offers some neat gimmicks and doesn't really drag on.  Characters...you know, act like teenagers except for the random lets slay demons part.  Lots of little things add a lot to the game.
Worst feature/element: Main character dies = gameover.  Also, baised ID spells that ALWAYS hit you.

Best character: Koromaru. Doglike that is an awesome doglike. Now if he only shot himself in the head...
Worst character: Ken. Fuuka is only annoying for her voice but a whiny emo kid didn't fit in with the other emo kids.

Best PC in-game: Minato, duh
Worst PC in-game: Aigis.  Junpei can at least hit a common weakness with Fire.  Aigis has nothing but HP and defense and in a game with selectivly bad AI, healing is sort of a gamble.

Favorite moment:  Beach scene with the tranny. Runner up is the MMO social link.
Least favorite moment:  Mini-bosses in Tartutus.

Game: Persona 3

Rating: 3/10. This game hits several of the things that really piss me off in video games: silent main character, grinding levels (seriously, I don't even do that in WoW) and RANDOM FUCKING BULLSHIT.

Best feature/element: Social Links. I wish they had been better implemented, because I basically just max out one and then forget about them forever.
Worst feature/element: Silent Main Character. Random Dungeons. Enemies with full-party accurate instant death. Not being able to control your party members. Losing if the main character dies. Every time you step in to a new area, having to check a FAQ because you might get raped. Take any of these.

Best character: Akihiko. He's probably the least-emo character, for one. Second, he's competent. Third, he gets to put it in Mitsuru, and that is worth points. And he keeps his feelings to himself, which is nice. Runner-up to Kenji, whose quest to put it in his hot teacher makes me salute him (he lost due to lack of screen time).
Worst character: The main character. The fact that I, the player, am somehow supposed to identify with this emo cocksucker makes me want to strangle whatever Japanese shit-eater decided that would be fun.

Best PC in-game: Jesus christ, I wonder if it's the ONE you can control?
Worst PC in-game: Uh, the kid. The one with the shorts.

Favorite moment: Kenji getting dumped by his hot teacher but realizing the importance of Bros Before Hos, making it a lesson well-learned.
Least favorite moment: Creepy little boy appears in your bedroom. Jesus christ fuck the main character is a fag.

Lalalala.  Ok, please, do tone down the language here.  It's a wwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee bit insulting and flagrant.

Game: Persona 3

Rating: 6? 7?  Somewhere in there.

Best feature/element: Social Links were pretty cool, yeah, but Homunculi definately get an honorable mention at the least. <_<
Worst feature/element: The main dies thing really wasn't as bad in this one, with the Homunculi to take ID for you and the ability to block pretty much whatever the hell you wanted to, but it still is a retarded feature that needs to be removed from multi-PC games forever, especially ones where your party members have revival skills.

Best character: Hmm.  Tough one, but I think I'll go with Mitsuru?  This could go to a lot of people, really.
Worst character: Ken.  Just didn't fit in with the group at all, really.

Best PC in-game: Minato, obviously.
Worst PC in-game: Junpei.  Everything he can do, Aigis can do better, except for hit things with woefully pathetic fire spells that are only good for knocking things down when they hit weakness.  And the dog does that better than him if that's what you need.

Favorite moment:  I'll think about these two and get back to this later, gotta run to work. <_<

Best feature/element: Hmm, characters, social links, persona fusing, combat system? Hard to pick one. I just like everything the game does. I think I'll give another nod to the pacing, though. Wonderfully done. The ally AI being actually intelligent is also a nice surprise, as well as the Tactics commands.
Worst feature/element: Hmm...can't...really think of one. It has a few flaws here and there, but they're nothing to really gripe about. I suppose Game Over when the Main dies is the biggest one, but with the homoncui you can pick up as well as the fact that the main is always going first and swiftly becomes overleveled, that really shouldn't be a problem often.

Best character: hmm, Akihiko or Shinjiro, definately. I'll say Akihiko.
Worst character: Jin, I think? Ken...wasn't really good, but at least pulled off the "mature kid" trope well. For all that he requires alot more willing suspension of disbelief then the rest of the PC cast. Jin is just annoying.

Best PC in-game: Main, no question. He can hang with Ryus and Harmonixers for sheer level of domination.
Worst PC in-game: Hmm, Koromaru? He's probably the least useful for me, as he doesn't hit as hard as Junpei pysically, and anything fire weak gets roasted by the main spamming Surt's magic before any allies get to go at all.

Favorite moment: Hmm, SPOILAR PC leaving the party. Really powerful scene and the fallout from that was handled well.
Least favorite moment: Hot springs minigame. Annoying.

Best feature/element: Oh.  What?  Everything flows so well, I can't think of one great thing.  The uniqueness of the entire package is just simply amazing.  Great pacing, too.
Worst feature/element: Main dying=game over.  It's not a large issue in-game (initiative!  hit weakness!  victory!), really, if you know what you're doing, but it is stupid.  Especially when 3 characters have revival, and the reasoning for it is nowhere near good enough ("You're the leader!" yeah, Mitsuru and Akihiko and Shinjiro lead the group way before you came here - why can't people go with you down and then revive you?).  It made sense in Nocturne!  Not here.

Best character: Junpei.  He's Xander in an RPG.  Best way to describe that, I think.
Worst character: Ken.  The villains work for what they are.  Ken...isn't even bad, but he feels so, so, so out of place.  His perspective was why they wanted him, but he does feel a bit forced.  Granted, this is a bit corrected in Fes, from what I understand, but still.  He's also kind of bland and "just there" too

Best PC in-game: Minato, duh >_>  Outside of him...they're all very balance.  All have good use.
Worst PC in-game: Honestly, this is kind of hard.  Koromaru, Junpei, and Aigis are all the closest to worst, but...I still can't call them bad.  The AI options can turn Aigis and her MP pool into a heal/support whore, and criticals are awesome.  God's Hand is the best physical skill in the game, overall, and she has it.  Junpei's skills are damn expensive, but he comes with a -kaja, at least, and the regen helps a bit.  Fire magic is ok, though sucktastic.  His durability and damage are still always good.  Koro's probably the worst overall - fire magic is all he has, and while he has ID, and he does have MT ID, Ken's is overall better (more dark resistance than light resistance).  Granted, Koro's still great, especially as a Jeigan, and he has evasion, so...Koro's probably the worst in-game (since if you want fire, max MAGICIAN, get Surt, blow things up), since he's not much outside of Fire Amp and Agi skills.

Favorite moment: Mmm...Orpheus Awakens.  That is pretty damn cool.  I also really like the ending sequence (the credits screen that shows the characters in art form, and cutscenes from the game).
Least favorite moment: Mmm...honestly, none, really.  The game is damn awesome at balancing all the good and bad, and everything was pretty damn good.

Game: Persona 3

Rating: 7.5. Not much middle ground here, and more people loved it than hated it.

Best feature/element: Social links, with characters and pacing close behind.
Worst feature/element: Game over if Minato dies. Not having played the game, I can still pretty much agree with that on general principle.

Best character: Tie between Mitsuru and Junpei.
Worst character: Tie between Jin and Ken, with Silent Main close behind.

Best PC in-game: In the first unanimous verdict of the topic, Minato.
Worst PC in-game: Junpei.

Favorite moment: Orpheus awakens, with two votes.
Least favorite moment: As near as I can tell, no single moment got two votes.

Now for something a bit more widely played.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 7/10. Better than FE7, but not by enough to raise it by a full point.

Best feature/element: Mutliple-choice promotions. Characters can can develop differently in different runs for reasons other than random chance? Be still my heart. Runners-up are hard mode being available from the start and random battles making EXP no longer a finite resource.
Worst feature/element: Endgame enemies being slightly less threatening than your average squirrel.

Best character: Pass. FE, characters, what?
Worst character: L'Arachel. Not only is she retarded, she doesn't even shut up when she permadies.

Best PC in-game: Ephraim. Ross and Amelia get honorable mentions for the sheer amount of broken ten extra levels and good speed growth can create in the FE system, but Eph is just ridiculous.
Worst PC in-game: Hard to say. Seth's the default answer, but I really hate healers joining underleveled, so there's a special place in this for Vanessa and L'Arachel. I'll decide which of these to count later.

Favorite moment: Ross OHKOing a Dragon Zombie at the end of the Ruins.
Least favorite moment: L'Arachel talks.

Least favorite moment: Rennac speaking.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 6/10.  Think this is roughly where I put it? Definitely the worst of the modern FEs to me, even if its more polished than FE6.

Best feature/element: Branch Promotions was kind of neat.
Worst feature/element: Its plot and characters. Yes, its inoffensive, but egads are the apathy levels high.

Best character: Hmm...L'Arachel.  She's amusing and funny.  Stands out in a cast as dull as this.
Worst character: Myrrh. Annoying mystical girl of ancient, near extinct race stereotype who serves little to purpose in the game.

Best PC in-game: Tana. Eph with flight, and the potential of Pierce (or alternatively, a second weapon option).  Honorable Mention to Eph due to killer stats and Reginlief.
Worst PC in-game: Ewan and Amelia.  Trainees gotten that late are just nowhere near the fuss of building up, even with random encounters.  Such liabilities its not even funny, and they're payoffs are nowhere near high enough.

Favorite moment: I guess that Eph/L'Arachel support? Forget which it is, maybe its the C Support? The one where Eph takes off his shirt to show a wound he needs healing and L'Arachel takes it as a perverted move and goes psycho.  Silly.
Least favorite moment: Eirika giving the stone to Lyon.  I don't CARE if that's in character, its one of the most head desking cliches ever.  Especially since she was CONSTANTLY WARNED THAT LYON WOULD PULL A STUNT LIKE THIS.  This isn't even like Ramza w/ the Scriptures, where he had little choice (and frankly, he held onto them for quite some time before giving it up), she just out and out ignored all warnings and gave it to Lyon, falling for the exact trick he was going to pull.  I'll grant Eph's version of the scene is pretty stupid too ("Give me the stone!" "No!" "Ok, I'LL TAKE IT! *paralyzes Ephraim and takes it*"), but at least it doesn't make Eph look like a total moron.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 6.5/10.  Like the Meeple said, probably the worst of the modern series (and probably on the lower tier overall), but still decent enough.

Best feature/element: Classes and extra stuff!  Yay optional dungeon and other things to make it a bit less repetitive!
Worst feature/element: Apathy.  Nothing stood out enough to really go here.

Best character: Rennac.  Honestly, the problem with this game is the same as other FE games, with no characterization or plot that is worth shit.  But Rennac is funny as hell, so yay and such.  L'Arachel/Dozla/Rennac for the win, here.
Worst character: Eirika.  Ugly and stupid.  Winning combination in women, there.

Best PC in-game: Anyone with good RNG-blessing!  For me, this was Amelia, Tana, Ephraim, KNNNNNOOOLLLLL, Rennac, Lute, L'Arachel, Syrene, Myrrh and Marisa, Tethys and Gerik.
Worst PC in-game: Anyone with bad RNG-blessing!  For me, this was Ross most particularly, followed by Eirika and Ewan.

Favorite moment: Uh...nothing spectacular.
Least favorite moment: Watching Eirika die, but not being able to continue the game with her dead.  What the fuck, game?  Perma-deaths and I can't purposely kill off who I want?  Asses.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 3/10
Better than FE7, but not by enough to raise it by a full point.
>.>  Actually I probably should lower FE7.

Best feature/element: Optional encounters existing.  Sure, I didn't use them much, but finite EXP games are retarded, especially with lots of characters, random growth, and permadeath.  Honorable mention to stores being on the world map.  Funny how its best features are something almost every other RPG has already.  Fail.
Worst feature/element: Permadeath.  Fuck that shit.

Best character: Lute.  Obviously.  L'Arachel gets an honorable mention.
Worst character: I dunno.  Myrrh?

Best PC in-game: Uh... tough one.  Lute, L'Arachel, and Tana all ended up well for me.  Probably L'Arachel overall.  Mounted healer + had decent damage + avoid works.
Worst PC in-game: Uh... Dozla?  I didn't use a lot of people so I dunno.

Worst character: Myrrh. See Meeple.

Best PC in-game: Gerik. Dude's just a beast. HM to Eph, Tana and Lute.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 7.5/10. I dunno, I think it's probably better than FE6? Otherwise, yeah, worst modern FE, etc.

Best feature/element: The usual awesome FE gameplay. HM open from the start, since that's the way the game really should be played in FE8's case.
Worst feature/element: Endgame NM challenge. They must have screwed up promoted enemy growths.

Oh, and anyone who praises this game for infinite exp then simultaneously turns around and complains about this game's challenge gets a "... what" from me.

Best character: Lyon. The two looks at him are neat, and in a plot largely consisting of cliches he puts a lot of twists on the whole demon possession stuff. He is singlehandedly the reason why FE8 plot > FE7 plot. HM to Eirika, see below.
Worst character: Myrrh, sure. Eph's also pretty bad in his own right but he gets to bounce off Lyon which would save anyone.

Best PC in-game: Ephraim. Reginleif SMAAASH, and all his stats are just way too good. Tana's also up there but starts a bit underlevelled. Lute, Colm, Eirika, Vanessa all get HMs as well.
Worst PC in-game: Mmm. Dozla. Syrene, statistically, is even worse, but she has flight (and in NM her bad stats don't matter!). Amelia/Ewan suck too but at least under some playstyles they become decent, Dozla/Syrene never do.

Favorite moment: Probably the bit Meeple put as least favourite. <_< Nah, just... the whole plot in that area? Eirika is like, the only FE lord who does imperfect things (barring Ike9... occasionally) and it's refreshing, and watching Lyon through that whole endgame arc was terrific.
Least favorite moment: Midgame in Ephraim's route. Fails. Watch Ephraim SINGLEHANDEDLY INVADE GRADO WITH HIS BRILLIANT STRATEGIES don't ask what they are they're brilliant! Plus all the neat characters from Eirika's route like Innes/Gerik being replaced by Duessel/Myrrh/Selena angst. I'd never play this route if not for his Endgame being cool.

I can't speak for other people, but I used the random battles to get underleveled characters up to speed (which they're balanced for), not to level-grind the main game into dust. It allows you to use project characters without gimping the rest of your army.
Title: Re: Two-Minute Game Reviews: Revived!

Project characters are project characters for a reason, though. Getting infinite exp allows you to overcome their downsides at no cost, and since they generally have better stats than characters who require less effort, of course the game will be correspondingly easier if you build them up with free exp.
Title: Re: Two-Minute Game Reviews: Revived!
Post by: Shale on April 11, 2008, 09:37:15 PM
True, but endgame enemies fail more than enough when presented with standard characters raised to standard endgame levels; that can make the game easier (it can also just let you keep a wider variety of non-project characters up to snuff for variety's sake), but it's not the root cause of the easiness.

Rating: 4

Best feature/element: I find the battles fun for a few rounds.
Worst feature/element: But then the battles never ever change, and they weren't that fun!

Best character:
Worst character: EIRIKA. Too stupid to live.

Best PC in-game: Tana
Worst PC in-game: Amelia. Note, I didn't use her because she decided to rush someone and died to a single hit. I think that's enough to qualify.

Favorite moment: Uh...I liked it when Amelia died. It was hilarious, because I hated her already.
Least favorite moment: Eirika hands over the stones despite being specifically warned about it. Characters can do imperfect things without being complete dumbasses! This was just a head-to-desk moment.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 8/10

Best feature/element: I like a lot of things about the game moderately. The characters, the story, the gameplay.
Worst feature/element: The challenge toward the end (although there are exceptions, like C19)

Best character: Lyon. Um, duh?
Worst character: Eirika. Stupid twat.

Best PC in-game: Ephraim. Despite there being a slew of decent characters, Eph is just really consistently badass. I also love Amelia for being fabulous but you have to do a bit of work with her, unlike Eph who starts as a death machine.
Worst PC in-game: Syrene or Ewan. Ewan, though, for the really bad defense.

Favorite moment: Nothing stands out. I found most of the Eph/Lyon stuff pretty solid.
Least favorite moment:

Rating: 7/10. I find it better than FE6, but yeah. Decent, but not overwhelming.

Best feature/element: The general FE gameplay goodness with a dash more polish than FE7. Those were generally nice touches.
Worst feature/element: Uh, the challenge definitely takes it for me. The games reaches Grandia-tastic difficulty later on in the game, which makes Normal Mode utterly pointless.

Best character: N/A. I don't ever even watch FE plot scenes past the first playthrough, and I forget about the game plots entirely the minute I finish playing.
Worst character: N/A. FE8 is, as above, an uniform blur for me.

Best PC in-game: EPHRAIM SMASH. Honorable mention to Tana and Eirika.
Worst PC in-game: Uh, I'll go with Dozla, sure. Agh pre-promo berserkers with shoddy stats.

Favorite moment: Uh.
Least favorite moment: Erm.

You can really see how much I care about FE plot.

Best feature/element: Battle system.
Worst feature/element: Fog of War is still retarded, surprise surprise.

Best character: Rennac. Stylish and a riot. He's kinda like Balthier, except with GODLIKE RES.
Worst character: Tana. Managed to annoy me the entire time she was onscreen.

Best PC in-game: Ephraim. Receive the spears of destruction and such.
Worst PC in-game: Duessel. Haha legendary obsidian general what.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 4.5/10 if I average what I'm forced to list it as and what I think it should be.

Best feature/element: Yeah I actually like the plot. I seem to be like the only person anywhere who does, even at FE-centric places.
Worst feature/element: Everything else? Let's go with the flagrant lack of difficulty. Hard mode should be hard.

Best character: FE8's characters don't really have all that much going for them. Let's say Glen.
Worst character: Selena. I tend to hate 'I know I'm doing the wrong thing but Ima do it anyway for stupid, stupid reasons' characters.

Best PC in-game: um um um let's go with Seth and Duessel for trashing hard mode. Myrrh can come too.
Worst PC in-game: I'm gonna throw 'any of the aftergame characters' out there for this.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 7/10 - a little better than FE6, for me, better on plot and polish.

Best feature/element: Branching promotions/Split path story. Gives me something different to do when I replay the game, and allows for at least a little customization.
Worst feature/element: Toooooo easy.

Best character: Errr... Rennac? Probably a slightly better cast than other FEs? I also like Valter, but that's just inexplicable psycho love.
Worst character: Ehhh... Myrrh is kinda pointless, and there were, as usual, plenty of epic apathy characters.

Best PC in-game: Ephraim. Sure, Tana and Eirika and Amelia and Ross and lots of other characters dominate, especially late-game... but uh, no one is quite so brutal every single step of the way.
Worst PC in-game: Dozla, I guess. I liked the trainees well enough, and Ross doesn't even need tower abuse to catch up because of the awesomeness of HATCHET.

Favorite moment: Endgame arc? Probably my favorite overall piece of FE story, out of 6-9. Lyon came across well, and I didn't mind Eirika's fail tooooo too much. Mostly cuz' I'd already pegged her as an airhead.

Also, SEA BALLISTA.
Least favorite moment: See: Elf

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 7/10

Best feature/element: choice of tower/ruin abuse or regular FE flow.  It doesn't give the urge to exp grind every enemy on the map to maximize levels.
Worst feature/element: Monsters, everything that attributes to why it's not as good as other FE is from monsters.  Monsters have shitty stats (which is why the endgame is awful), boring animations and serve no reason except "whomg there's monsters".  It's not like FE9/10's laguz race because they are actual characters or what not.

Best character: Rennac.  It's hilarious to see him squirm to his fate bound to some crazy pyscho princess.
Worst character: Fortimorttis. Stupid final boss.

Best PC in-game: Gerik. He's a badass motherfucker.
Worst PC in-game: Duessel. Sure Dolza is worse, but Duessel is some legendary general and he's completely awful.

Favorite moment:  Have to go with Sea Ballistae
Least favorite moment: Orson and his creepy zombie wife.  ewwwww.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 7/10. Better than 6, worse than 7. I rank the others at 7, guess you can say this one is middle ground.

Best feature/element: Different class changes was a neat addition. EXP being a finite resource at your choice is neat. Makes it such that you can use the varying other characters if you want to.
Worst feature/element: Some how seems more repetitive than the rest. Could be a combination of things including random battles (thus being a blessing and a curse), end game enemies not having any sort of flavour, etc.

Best character:Um...Lyon? He's the only one who actually feels like he has character.
Worst character: Fortimorttis. Yay, someone who manages to be even MORE generic in a game full of already generic characters and nameless monsters.

Best PC in-game: Ephraim. Solos maps with ease. The army at his back is really just icing!
Worst PC in-game: Syrene/Dozla. Both are a special type of fail. I'm going to say Syrene just because Dozla at least has some redeeming qualities (joins earlier, and has HP or something)

Favorite moment: "I'm going to put a messy end to your sorry life" *Reginleif critical* *KO*. Eph's endgame dialouge with Lyon is also good.
Least favorite moment: Orson and his creepy wife is a good one. Valter appearing on screen is another.

Best feature/element: Random battles. Yes, the high point of this game is adding RANDOM BATTLES. I could end this review on that note and it would say it all.
Worst feature/element: Permadeath? Naw. While it's a giant gaping hole of failure, it's been mentioned. Let's go instead with..mmm. How about limited charge weapons? Sure, why not, there should be some variety to the cited failure.

Best character: I'll take, "Who's the prettiest burn unit victim for 200, Alex." (Eirika, I guess.)
Worst character:  All.

Best PC in-game: Eirika, I guess. I don't care beyond this since it turns into eyeing tables and pondering if .3 more strength is worth having .9 less luck on average.
Worst PC in-game: Dozla, sure.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 8/10.  Had more fun with it than FE7.  STill, that feels high looking at it now, maybe I should knock it down a peg.

Best feature/element: Branching promotions.  Even if they were usually obvious!
Worst feature/element: Permadeath.  Worst idea ever, turns a single mistake into a reset.  Yes, this is the worst feature of every game I've played that has it.

Best character: Yeah, Lyon
Worst character: Eph, really.  There's presumably more boring characters but THEY don't have plot all the time.  ZzzZzzzZ

Best PC in-game: Eirika.  Though lord knows Tana and Eph are just as good, Eirika's more the style of PC I like.
Worst PC in-game: Duessel.  Probably technically better than the other failure prepromos, but THEY aren't stuck with Great Knight move restrictions at least!

Favorite moment: There's bound to be some specific scene that really captures Lyon, but I can't remember it clearly now.
Least favorite moment: Eh, whatever.

Worst feature/element: I will go with weapon durability.  FE8 without the weapon durability shit is actually like 6/10 for me, I had fun playing it and have done it a few times.

Worst character:  Not Colm of Gerik.

Best PC in-game: Colm.

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Rating: 7.5 of 10, I enjoy the whole system and even most of the characters in general, but... Permadeath is frustrating on a level that would drop this game 2 points in a vacuum of bad points.

Best feature/element: Standard FE tactical gameplay. Branching promo paths are a second.
Worst feature/element: From the CKs: Permadeath.  Worst idea ever, turns a single mistake into a reset.  Yes, this is the worst feature of every game I've played that has it.

Best character: L'Arachel. Somewhat ditzy, though good-hearted and kind of pushy. This is the only kind of non-intelligent character I can stand, and I appreciated seeing one play a major part in the story. Very charming, I could see actually being friends with a person like this in real life.
Worst character: If we only count the forced characters? Seth maybe? Ephraim's pretty lame too.

Best PC in-game: Eirika.
Worst PC in-game: Tempted to say Colm due to his complete lack of decent growth in my game (he's everything-screwed). This one goes to Dozla, though it was hard to be offended by him since I only used him so he could stand next to L'Arachel for funny supports.

Favorite moment: Pretty much anytime L'Arachel was being 'justice-minded' and dragging Rennac around.
Least favorite moment: "Ephraim's brilliant strategies" - pretty much anytime someone was wanking off Ephraim for things he never actually does.

Game: Final Fantasy IV

Rating: 5/10.  'salright.

Best feature/element: Music I guess.  More than a few classic themes cropped up here.
Worst feature/element: Still Alive~

Best character: There were characters besides Cecil?  (Edge is a pure DL thing)
Worst character: Kain.  Right, him.

Best PC in-game: Cecil.  At the end of the day, he was alive when everyone else wasn't.  Also, they didn't cruelly take him away constantly like Rosa, the other contender.
Worst PC in-game: Yang.  I can't bring myself to say Edward.

Favorite moment: Intro.  Pretty decent.
Least favorite moment: Manos, the Hand of Golbez.  Whut.

Game: Final Fantasy IV

Rating: 5/10

Best feature/element: Rydia/twins
Worst feature/element: Rosa. Seriously though game mechanics were pretty awful as Jo'ou said below and that's more a feature whilst Rosa is ... a character yeah. Plus Rosa isn't *always* there (read thank god) whilst the gameplay/battleplay pretty much is.

Best character: Rydia
Worst character: Rosa

Best PC in-game: Been too long since I've played to really have a grasp on this =/
Worst PC in-game: Ros .. ah k Tellah <_< Rosa of the main PCs though.  I don't expect my healer to be a slow ass and healing take forever to pull off! >_>

Favorite moment: Rydia's tranformation from chibi to kickass woman? Saving the day and what not.
Least favorite moment: Cecil/Rosa lurv >_>

Game: Final Fantasy IV

Rating: 3/10. Uninspiring RPG with stab-worthy mechanics and dull everything else? Sounds like a winner. Nostalgia doesn't hold this thing up.

Best feature/element: Uhhhh... music? It's not -great-, but look at the competition.
Worst feature/element: The battle mechanics. Absurdly nonsensical and poorly done. The ATB system makes me want to stab things in the eye, and it'd be a dull, petrified system even without the stupid.

Best character: <CmdrKing> There were characters beside Cecil?
Worst character: Oh wait, Kain. He fails generically! Not sure if it counts as a character either, though.

Best PC in-game: Tossup between Cecil, Rosa and Rydia to me. All three are cornerstones of the team.
Worst PC in-game: Edward by a landslide. Besides that? Uh, all the temps are pretty underwhelming.

Favorite moment: There were interesting moments in FF4?
Least favorite moment: The INCREDIBLE CRYSTAL FETCHQUEST THAT NEVER ENDS AND EVERYTHING IT INVOLVES.

Rating: 4.5/10. Game has not aged well at all.

Best feature/element: Revolutionary in terms of RPG Plot.  By this I mean the game had actual dialog, characters, writing, etc.  This doesn't mean it was GOOD, but it was a noteworthy step up compared to like all NES RPGs...man, I can't believe I just said that now.
Worst feature/element: Its ability to stand the test of time.  As I said, it aged poorly; the game was great when it came out, but egads does it feel old, simple, what have you.  Compared to FF3o, which once you get past the Graphics and sound quality, actually feels fresher.

Best character: Dark Knight Cecil.  Only character who showed anything remotely resembling development.  Yes, I mean Dark Knight Cecil specifically; Paladin Cecil sucks ass, and should have been introduced 5 hours later than he did (since Paladin Transformation is essentially the same as saying "This is the ultimate transformation in Cecil's character, the pinnacle, etc.  Once this happens, there's no real room to go up")
Worst character: Kain. Character who gets hyped for being deep and well written...when the entire time, he's being CLEARLY MANIPULATED AND CONTROLLED by the villains into doing evil deeds, and then he angsts about it.  No, I'm sorry; being controlled automatically kills any sort of deep motives.  Freaking Lionheart from FF2 was the same damn character...minus manipulation...so he's considerably deeper (especially since the game hints he's still an evil prick end game, only reason he joined was due to one common, bigger threat.)

Best PC in-game: Cecil.  Reliable tank with reliable offense for most of the game, and Cover helps a lot, especially if you put him in back row where pretty much only magic can kill him.  Honorable Mention to Rydia for being a beast of a cannon.  No, I don't respect Rosa that much; she really, really lacks anything stand out as a healer (heck, she's completely replaceable by items) until she learns Cure 3, which is gotten later than I'd like and she doesn't really do a hell of a lot in Random encounters, which is more what you fight.
Worst PC in-game: FF4o, its Edward.  Sub Rydia Durability, iffy stats, and absolutely no real worthwhile skillset barring some status? Yeah...
FF4a? Kain.  Lacks the raw power of Rydia and Palom, can't tank as well as Yang or Cid, with worse offense than both, lacks Edward's Quirks and Speed of Psychoness, lacks Edge's worth on bosses, and no healing like Rosa or Porom.
Including aftergame dungeons? Probably Cid or Edward.  Edward's HP reaches a level of unforgivableness, and he's too much of a liability.  Cid, meanwhile, just completely lacks damage, tanking worth alone isn't saving him, and stuck with 2 handed weapons means he's a worse tank than Kain (let alone Cecil) in practice.  Doesn't help that Kain gets the upgrade of a lifetime there.

Favorite moment: Attack on the Giant of Bab-il.  Mostly just a stylish scene rarely seen in RPGs, where the entire world comes to help your party out in some manner, and its about as stylish as you'll get from FF4.
Least favorite moment: Two take the cake for this.  First is Golbez takes the Crystal.  A *hand* moves VERY SLOWLY, and your characters just sit there and watch him do it.
The second is Kain betrays Mark 2.  No, its not the betrayal part that urks me, its the fact that again, YOUR CHARACTERS DON'T DO ANYTHING TO RESIST.  Kain just takes the crystal, and walks out; doesn't even so much as knock out Cecil, whip out Deus Ex Machina powers like the law of "Good guys turned bad become Plot Godlikes!" suddenly, he just takes it and walks away...and all you get is "Kain stop!"

I'd at least have appreciated something like "Cecil charges Golbez's hand but OH NOES RANDOM BARRIER ERECTED!" At least there, while plot BS, Cecil's still TRYING, and its less head desk inducing but...yeah.

Game: Final Fantasy IV

Rating: 4/10. Has not aged well, etc.

Best feature/element: Music? Dungeon design maybe? I dunno.
Worst feature/element: Battles are a bit of a mess and character building is boring, so it doesn't have much for gameplay. Plot ain't saving it either.

Best character: Cecil.
Worst character: Kain out of the characters who have screentime, Palom out of characters who annoyed me most in their one-note-ness.

Best PC in-game: Uh... Cecil? Pretty close though.
Worst PC in-game: Edward. Twins also sucked.

Favorite moment: Elemental fiend battles were always a highlight. Better than the average FF4 battle + sexy music + had that certain feeling of EPIC.
Least favorite moment: Kain's second betrayal was indeed really bad.

Best PC in-game: Rosa.

Rating 4/10 - If this were the DS remake, now, it'd be an easy 7-8/10.

Best feature: It's pretty short.
Worst feature: It's also rather clunky and poorly polished.

Best Character: Cid.
Worst character: KAIN.

Best PC: Ummmm, tie between Rosa and Rydia.
Worst PC: Edward. Discounting temps, Kain.

Game: Final Fantasy IV

Rating: 10/10. Hasn't aged but is still one of my favorite games to sit down and play.

Best feature/element: Overall package. Gameplay holds up well enough for a game with over a dozen PC's that end up.. reasonably balanced most of the time, the story elements work well enough, etc.
Worst feature/element: Deaths, yeah. Script needs an overhaul and that'd be the first thing I'd alter.

Best character: Cecil.
Worst character: Zemus.

Best PC in-game: Cecil?
Worst PC in-game: Edward. Cid is also pretty bad too. Tellah is good for the time, same with Fu. Porom.. has an argument actually.

Favorite moment: Intro or Edge vs Rubicant. Edge may have his problems, but he's not exactly the stereotypical ninja.
Least favorite moment: Tower of zot.

Worst feature/element: Lack of depth in the plot.

Best PC in-game: Cecil. This one's debetable, but Cecil's always important.
Worst PC in-game: Cid. I'm not a fan of how he hashes out and you only have him for a few dungeons, one of which he sucks in extra hard.

Favorite moment: "Cecil, use the Crystal!"

Rating: 4/10.  It's easy to play, fairly quick, and mildly entertaining, but damn, it's pretty bad looking at it as a whole.  Mechanics are shit and very, very confusing, with weak story, characters and is generally boring overall.  FF4a helps this a bit, though, or the game would be a 3.

Best feature/element: It's fairly short.  Replayable, has some side areas, etc.  It's a step up from the older games, at least (well...a step up from...ok, shit, maybe not >_>)
Worst feature/element: ...uh...most of how everything else meshes.  There's not much that stands out here, really.  The game lacks anything that's really good, just stuff that ranges from bad to not amazing.  Things just aren't great.

Best character: Rubicante.  The name is badass, and he has a bit of a personality and story, unlike the other fucking fiends, who are random piles of shit thrown in for the hell of it they try to give story to.
Worst character: Bleh.  Most characters aren't interesting enough to merit this category.  Probably have to go with Valvalis - she literally appears right at her fight, with a nod from Kain ("hey lol valvaly!!!"), and nothing else.  And she's treated as a major player and high-ranking fiend?  Yeah.  Kind of stupid.  The PCs at least have screentime and had some effort put into them.  Even Milon and Cagnazzo did too!  And Milon has the awesome failure aspect, and Cagnazzo does something post-death!

Best PC in-game: Uh...Rydia.  The attack magic is always good.  Cecil's durability isn't that helpful, due to the way the damn mechanics are fucked up.  Rosa's healing is nice, but mechanics again hurt that a bit - she's probably second, I suppose.  Palom and Porom in FF4a would come here as well.  Kain's Jump I actually found decently helpful on Zeromus, and for the majority of the game, he comes as a decent jeigan, so...eh.  I would call him better than some of the other shit.
Worst PC in-game: Edward, I suppose.  Not durable, not damaging, etc.  Granted, in the remake...I'd have to say no one, since they all have good use in some way.  So...make this an N/A, overall, I suppose.

Favorite moment: Uh...well, this is hard, since I don't think the game had any amazing scenes.  Good scenes...well, I suppose if you pressed me I'd say Cecil the Paladin getting a lapdance.  Just funny, and repeatable!
Least favorite moment: "Cecil...join me"  "No, I'll never join you!  You killed my brother!"  "No, Cecil, I AM your brother!"  And then Cecil was a demon.

For our next game...have we done Tales of Symphonia?

Game: Final Fantasy IV

Rating: 8/10. I think the game has aged fairly well, for all that it's an incredibly basic RPG given today's standards.

Best feature/element: Huge inventory.
Worst feature/element:

Best character: In-game? Cid.
Worst character: Tellah.

Best PC in-game: Cecil, no question. Outdamages everyone for at least 50% of the game and doesn't rely on MP and can be a backup healer and massive tank.
Worst PC in-game: FuSoYa, as he just seems superfluous with both Rosa and Rydia in the party and his MP isn't great.

Best Moment: Final fight.
Worst Moment: The third or fourth "Oh no, he's certainly dead" *five minutes* "I'm back!" episode.

Game: Final Fantasy IV

Rating: Uhm...I'll go with 6/10 right now. It tends to hover in the 5/6 range.

Best feature/element: Simplicity, polish-for-the-time, general lack of any really grating factors.
Worst feature/element: Plot. The plot is not sub-par for '93, but it's not good.

Best character: Edge, but that's a construct that I actually like. Based off in-game lines only...probably still Edge anyways, though. Go fig.
Worst character: Kain. Yes, yes, backstab me. Again. And again.

Best PC in-game: Overall...probably Rosa, feels too necessary. Cecil's very close, too, for this.
Worst PC in-game: ...Edward, though Cid's damned close, it feels like. Out of the final five, definitely Kain, no contest.

Favorite moment: Cid blowing himself up to seal a hole. The most unbelievably stupid method of sealing a hole ever. The ludicriousness of it never fails to bring a smile to my face. I'm not kidding.
Least favorite moment: Bla bla Kain later betrayal bla. The scene was so unbelievably trite. "Oh hay bring back the crystal." "...c'mon, Kain, you aren't that weak, fight this off-" "YOINK." "Sigh." I mean, it was a dumb *idea*, but the execution is the truly horrendous part of it.

Uematsu has done some pretty kickass things with PSX/2 synths, thank you very much.

Rating: 6/10.

Best feature/element: Fun SRPG gameplay~ Yeah, neat take on a FE-like, and spirit skills are a lot of fun. Music also deserves note for being way above GBA standards, for what that's worth.
Worst feature/element: Way too fucking easy. I mean, I put this for FE8, and OG1 is about 10x easier. I was never in any remote danger of losing a battle in this game for anything but a gimmicky reason (i.e. my only death came from overkilling a boss you aren't suppose to kill. Says much). Plot deserves a mention because it's godawful but I don't really care.

Best character: Excellen? Not a huge fan but she had moments.
Worst character: Sanger. SRW has a few characters who are all in the same mold: they know everything, they say nothing but cryptic remarks, they are badass pilots from the past generation, they demand YOU GET BETTER SO YOU CAN FACE THE COMING TRIALS... Ingram, Maier, Elzam for a few others off the top of my head. Sanger loses because he has the most screentime. Also he makes Kyosuke suck whenever he's around, and Kyo is generally fine otherwise.

Best PC in-game: Was Excellen for me. Not 100% sure how objective that is, but she had a hell of a lot of ranged power to go with her never-get-hit game and was one half of the best boss-killing move in the game.
Worst PC in-game: Tasuku? Serious will issues on that mech.

Favorite moment: The fight against Maier. Only remotely challenging battle in the game, with three bosses and solid overall enemies. Fun~
Least favorite moment: KYOSUKE I CAN'T TELL YOU ANYTHING NOW SHOW ME WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED. No, this isn't one moment. <_<

Worst feature/element: Lack of challenge. And just think, OGs makes this one look hard!

Best character: RYUSEI, obviously. (Excellen.)
Worst character: Uh. I tend to block out SRW characters when they're not good, due to ease of sceneskip. Tossup between Katina and Latooni, I think, as both are retarded stereotypes.

Best PC in-game: Excellen, probably. Nigh untouchable, great sniping with natural Hit & Away, and Rampage Ghost for a finisher.
Worst PC in-game: Giado. Katina could hurt things before her inevitable death, Garnet had Bless. Giado was just useless.

Favorite moment: First fight with R-Gun Rivale.
Least favorite moment: Ryusei's intro. Every mecha anime cliche in the book plus it puts Ryusei and Tenzan in the same room.

Best character: Kyosuke. Excellen is cool, but wouldn't work nearly so well without Kyosuke to play off of.
Worst character: Ummm...Latooni? Sure, she's kinda boreing.

Best PC in-game: Kyosuke. He wrecks shit solo and with Excellen the wreckage gets insane.

SRWOG - 6/10. 7-8/10 for OGs, but I wouldn't count that score.

Best feature: Well paced gameplay with a lot of stuff you can do. Character interaction is also good.
Worst feature: Plot is really lame-ass and not mockably funny like later SRW titles. Also has sorta lame-duck maps compared to OG2.

Best character: Kyosuke, because he's cool, has great interactions with Excellen and some other PCs, and he has my favorite moment in the game.
Worst character: Erm.... Katina? At least Russel gets one moment of awesome by bitchslapping her.

Best PC in-game: Kyosuke or Excellen. Pick one.
Worst PC: Giado, easily.

Favorite moment: When Kyosuke breaks the anime cliche of waiting for the villain to finish an evil transformation and punches the Rivale in the face.

Game: Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation

Rating: 7.0

Best feature/element: Interesting gameplay...
Worst feature/element: ...lack of damage projection.

Best character: Excellen.
Worst character: Ryusei. Sanger as close second.

Best PC in-game: ...Kyosuke. Is around longer than Sanger. Excellen gets close but lacks the damage and range isn't as vital in this game.
Worst PC in-game: Giado. Russel and Katina both have slightly more use than him? I never found a good setup for Giado. Katina -is- a close second, tho.

Favorite moment: Final few fights were challenging enough. Go with those.
Least favorite moment: Anything with Ryusei or Sanger in it, really.

Game: Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation

Rating: 7.5/10

Best feature/element: They did the gameplay well at least and branching paths are fun~. I may well also say sceneskip since reading villain dialogue is not good for the brain.
Worst feature/element: Kind of boring to play long in one sitting and plot is something you type in caps.

Best character: Excellen~. Russel is a close second since he is awesome.
Worst character: Sanger. Go away~. Ryusei can be amusing~

Best PC in-game: Kyosuke~
Worst PC in-game: Giado~

Favorite moment: Anytime there is cast interaction with Excellen.
Least favorite moment: KYOSUKE I CAN'T TELL YOU ANYTHING NOW SHOW ME WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED. - seconded so very much.

Game: Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation

Rating: 9/10 - I played the game 3.5 times.  Not including OGs.  Yeah, definitely loved it, but there's something that keeps it from a 10, and I'm not sure what it is.

Best feature/element: Customization.  I had more fun outside of battles than in battles because of it.  Not that battles themselves weren't fun!  Moreso than most SRPGs, easily.  Character interaction and Battle Masteries get honorable mentions.
Worst feature/element: Uh sure lack of damage projection.  Never had a problem with it, but it is something that should be there.

Best character: Excellen?  Sure.  For all that I liked Leona as well.
Worst character: Katina.  DIE IN A FUCKING FIRE

Best PC in-game: Latooni.  Able to do anything and do it well.  Except tank, but that's what evade hax is for.
Worst PC in-game: Katina, if only for the mission where she goes on retard NPC mode.  Other than that?  Giado.

Favorite moment: Russel pimpslaps Katina.
Least favorite moment: Katina being a retard.  Okay, that's several moments.  Actually more of a timespan.  Of the whole fucking game.

Rating: 6/10? Sure. Need to lower its rating in my post about those a bit.

Best feature/element: SRW gameplay, sure. It's what drew me into the game anyway.
Worst feature/element: Being too fucking easy works for me, too. hinode once mentioned the enemies in this game failed harder than FE8's. And he was right. The game isn't easy even because of SRW's typical sorting algorithm of broken, it's just because enemies are impossibly incompetent. OG2, though. That one gets victimized by the sorting algorithm of broken. >_>

Best character: Excellen, by a landslide. Kyosuke works partly because Excellen is there, and the competition otherwise is... yeah.
Worst character: Ryusei. Is. A. Fucking. Retard.

Best PC in-game: Hmmm, Excellen works. Kyosuke is also great, and Latooni worked very well for me.
Worst PC in-game: Giado. Is. Fucking. Useless.

Favorite moment: Excellen going damsel-in-distress and Kyosuke promptly nodding to shoot her because she'd never do that. What, it was kinda funny. >_>
Least favorite moment: OH SANGER I NEVER THOUGHT YOU'D TURN ON US WHY

Game: Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation

Rating: 8/10

Best feature/element: My own mecha fanboyism? I'd say that counts.
Worst feature/element: Too easy. Enemies fail horribly.

Best character: Excellen. She makes the character interaction, especially with Kyosuke. Sanger falls into the previous complaints for like... 90% of the game at least? Otherwise he's not so bad >_>
Worst character: Uh.... blocked out most of the crap characters. Probably a villain, and I probably like a good 3/4 of the characters mentioned here. Ryusei is annoying but kinda amusing to me at times. Granted, I'm daft. So, uh, that alien chick. You know, whichever one fails the most.

Best PC in-game: Kyosuke, for all that... Latooni had the most kills for me the first time? Kyosuke dominates when you pick his route from the first level onward and is a part of Rampage Ghost though, so win.
Worst PC in-game: Giado. Russel is a decent support guy in Valsion Custom, Katina gets a ton of credit for early and cheap Valor on Kyosuke's route. Garnet had something I'm sure, and Tasuku was at least Defense god.

Favorite moment: Punching Rivale/Something with Excellen, pick a moment. Probably involving Kyosuke.
Least favorite moment: Sanger being annoying and worthless for 90% of the game. This is a moment in my mind.

Game: Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation

Rating: 7/10 - I like it, but it didn't age well in comparison to OG2.

Best feature/element: Gameplay? Music, maybe too.
Worst feature/element: Easiness could be used, I guess. OG2 fixes that for half the game, at least.

Best character: Allow me to answer that with a screenshot: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Gilderoy/SRWOG/shoephones.png
Worst character: I guess I can see the Sanger arguments for this game. I hope we do OG2 too.

Best PC in-game: I liked Kyosuke a lot.
Worst PC in-game: Um... Giada, definitely.

Favorite moment: The stage where Kyosuke saves Excellen.
Least favorite moment: Pretty much anything with Ingram.

If you want to debate FF4 rankings, feel free in another topic. This isn't the time or the place; I don't want to see this topic veer into an argumentitive derail.

~

I am prolly too late for this, but eh...

FF4 review

Rating: 10/10 (Biased? Sure. It's still my favorite game of all time. Nostalgia kicks in when I turn it on.)

Best feature/element: Nostalgia
Worst feature/element: Too easy.

Best character: Kain, as if you all don't already know.
Worst character: Oh...Baigon? I was kinda super happy when I was younger and the message of him joining me popped on the screen. I kinda just figured he would stand in front of everyone since I had a full party already. >_> (sue me.)

Best PC in-game: Cecil; Kain when he gets double jump and his uber spear. He is a better tank then Cecil, just lacks magic.
Worst PC in-game: Cid

Favorite moment: I enjoy getting Edge. That whole part of the game all the way to the fight with Rubicant was great.
Least favorite moment: No one dies. Seriously, Yang, the Twins, and Cid should have all stayed dead. Yang and Cid especiialy. What the fuck, their sacrifices were noteworthy, blowing themselves up for the greater good. Nope! Still alive. Lame.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and now the up to date review!
Game: Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation
Rating: 7/10
Best feature/element: Characters were fun.
Worst feature/element: Too easy? Sure.
Best character: Gilliam
Worst character: Ingram
Best PC in-game: Kyosuke, pure awesomeness.
Worst PC in-game: Giada
Favorite moment: If I remember correctly there was a scene where Kyosuke and excellen are caught together with their clothes off. All I remember is Excellen yelling at Kyosuke about getting all his stuff back on. Made me laugh a little.
Least favorite moment: Anything involving Ingram post craziness.
I moderated Scar's post because I don't think anyone wants the two minute game review to spiral into a bitchy debate over FF4 ranks. See the edited post for details.
Was that really an argumentative post? I mean, yes, he makes points that are opinion (Cid and Yang staying dead, for example) but it doesn't seem to be argumentative in tone. As I recall, people ARE allowed to chip in on old games they didn't review.
DL rankings has nothing to do with reviewing a game though.
He went off on a profanity filled rant about Kain versus other characters. While interesting, it's not fitting for this topic. Scar's more than welcome to rehash it it's own topic; but as is it was inviting a giant derail.
To clarify, I mean rankings as in regard to this topic, not to DL rankings. Kain as largely held as the worst character in FF4 in this topic.
Haven't played any SRW unfortunately. Are there any other games left to review or is this topic dead now?
