Title: DLCon: Plans, where to go, etc
Post by: superaielman on March 27, 2009, 05:13:41 PM
<Grefter-SuperisBFMV> Super, post a new topic about post con plans to try and find out what people are planning.

What are people wanting to do there? Is anyone staying after? I've heard a little talk of this (I'm considering going sightseeing in NYC afterwards myself).

Ok, ideas planned for the Con are as such:

-Bowling.  Saturday Evening, cause this is the time we did it on the other DLCons and Minimeet2 as well.  For those at DLC1/Minimeet2, this is the same place we went too (no, not sure if I'll get lucky with the discount again.  This is mostly a "Its near Meeple's House" thing regardless.)

-Trip to Gamestop.  There's one near the Bowling Alley, for starters, and then there's 2 in Willowbrook (sadly, the two GOOD stores have since been gone.)  Actually, there's a crap load around my house, so making several trips wouldn't be unreasonable.  (there's one like a mile away from the Hotel; its reasonable to walk, but requires going parallel to a highway, but hey, I've done it a few times!)

-Mini-Golf.  Same place as DLC1, where much hilarity ensued.  Probably do this Friday or Saturday mid-day.

-Video Game Tournament that Xer seems to be running; no clue when we'll do this.

-Music Quiz!  Again, no clue when we'll do this.

...I'm thinking a "Mall Trip for Gamestop" would be best done on Sunday, cause its on the way to the Airport (all of them), and is near bus stops for those busing down.

For those staying *AFTER* for whatever reason, the New York trip is probably a good idea, to see things like Time Square and such.  Bad idea with a huge number of people, but with a much smaller group, its certainly feasible.

Yeah obviously if I am flying out I would love to kick around a bit with some people and do the look at cool shit thing again even if I don't get to look at sexy Babbage Difference Engine 2 this time, NYC is a pretty cool place to do some random shit.

Looking at how much time I can get off from work and all that... I may not be able to really do anything BEFORE the Con (other than errr maybe a couple of days crashed out somewhere, but not the week and a half/2 weeks I did in Elf Land), but post con stuff to make a holiday of it would be pretty cool.

Edit - One thing I would actually like to do that is a bit camp is to go to a shoe shop and buy a good pair of dress shoes for work.  I have been eying up some Allen Edmonds for ... a good year or so now and just can't bring myself to spend that much on shoes online and well they have 3 freaking stores in NYC.  Edit 2 - That isn't even a joke.  I have 3 pairs of shoes.  I hate shoes, but these good shoes are just fucking awesome.

Crap, lots of stuff planned on Saturday, which is when I wanted to do the FG tourney. Not much planned on friday though... I could try for that.

Only thing that's happening on Saturday is the Bowling Trip; the Mini Golf thing PROBABLY will happen then, but not certain.  Otherwise, the rest isn't really set much.

An idea for something to do after the con, when there's only a single digit number of us left (...I hope...):

A trip to New York.  One of the ideas someone wanted to do (won't mention names) was even go see a Yankees Game, cause well, its Yankee Stadium and what not!

...except they're on the road then, so not a good idea.  However, they DO give tours of the stadium, and you can book them and such.  So I was wondering, anyone interested in that idea?  Whether this falls through or not bares no weight on actually getting to New York mind; I expect we'll do that anyway, its just something extra to do while there.

I do ask for a day of NYC barhopping and general funnery for those of us with a bit more leniency for the alcoholic beverage. Would anyone be interested in that? Would definately be after the con.
Title: Re: DLCon: Plans, where to go, etc

Sure. I'm planning on staying back a bit longer after the con.

I'd like to stay after, but I have friends who live in NYC so I can stay with them if it's an issue.

No thank you to the bar hopping, though.

I'd be down, it sounds fun.  But I've already set it so my flight leaves Sunday so I can't.  Probably for the best, I spend too much money as is.

Just noting that after the con, I doubt my parents would be as lenient about people staying at my house, so yeah, you probably all should find some sort of arrangements as to where you're staying.

Why does everyone automatically assume that "barhopping and general funnery" equals "drink until we can't feel feelings no more"?

Joke answer:  Wait, you mean it isn't?

Serious answer:  Because people who don't drink often have serious misconceptions about what drinking is actually like.

Alternatively, since they never took up drinking in adult life, they assume it's all like drinking in high school, which pretty much is binge drinking (since, of course, you can't just go do it whenever you want so you have to make up for it.  Or something.)

You drink until you're numb so that you can forget how much cash you just fucking burned on drinks in NYC.  $12 for a fucking screwdriver?

Gref, we'll all have a Foster's in your honor, mate.  You down-and-underers totally love that stuff!  The teevee said so!  Oh, but don't try to take your giant knoife on the airplane.

Christ, and I thought stuff was expensive here.  $7 for a Bloody Mary doesn't seem so bad at all now.

You missed the hard stress on the K.  Kanoifing.

Wait what?  You mean it isn't?  The various many times I have been out drinking with work mates has without fail proved this to be wrong (IT is different than high school I guess, but it is still binge).  This may be due to a corrupted sample consisting entirely of Germans and Australians though (Germans party harder for the record).
Title: Re: DLCon: Plans, where to go, etc
Post by: Cmdr_King on March 31, 2009, 08:39:51 AM
Well... my own experience is that, discounting the people that drink because they actually like the taste of beer or whatever, the people that are there to get completely "I won't even remember this tomorrow" drunk are in the minority (though certainly it can be a large minority), with drinking just enough for a buzz (so, y'know, you can tell they've been drinking but they are still coherent) being the more common goal
Title: Re: DLCon: Plans, where to go, etc
Post by: Grefter on March 31, 2009, 08:53:47 AM
Oh they don't drink to get that drunk, just that getting that drunk is the inevitable conclusion to going out drinking for most in this country.

Note:  I uphold the fairly low amount required by modern scientific description of Binge here.  Definition of "Buzz" may be Binge by these standards.
Title: Re: DLCon: Plans, where to go, etc
Post by: Cotigo on March 31, 2009, 09:31:46 AM
It also happens that sometimes people will go out to have a good time, and, in certain company, get carried away.  I can count quite a few times where I've headed off to the bar to have a pint, meet up with some friends, spend more time there than I had planned, and whoop there goes the night.  Drinking with the DL, though?  The proportion of tea-totalers to alcoholics suggests to me that the urge to stick around for "just one more" won't manifest nearly as strongly.
Title: Re: DLCon: Plans, where to go, etc
Post by: Hunter Sopko on March 31, 2009, 10:16:33 AM
Anyway, the plan would be to hit the city early for a whirlwind tour of, in no particular order, the Natural History Museum, Times Square/Rockerfeller Center, maybe lunch somewhere chintzy like Jekyll and Hyde's, maybe Chinatown, capping off the night at St. Mark's Place, grabbing a drink in between some of the places, of course. A one day pass would take care of the subway fares.

If people want to go to Central Park, I'm open to suggestion, but I have absolutely no experience with it despite working next to it for over a year.

I could almost definitely be convinced to join the drinky gang at St. Mark's. We could also get delicious falafel/dumplings/hot dogs/actually literally anything!

EDIT: Also? I hate Manhattan drink prices as much as the next guy (actually probably moreso), but if you're actually shelling out $12 for vodka and O.J. you are just not being an optimally savvy consumer. Fact.

St. Marks would inevitably end with me dragging everyone to Kanka, then the Hop Devil Grill.

They said Times Square area, though it's easy enough to find hideously expensive drinks elsewhere in the city...

What will be my best bet for hotel/somewhere to crash after the con? I have a general idea of how long I'll be in the area (3-5 days postcon). Who's staying after besides me/CT/Gref if they come? Not counting people in the area, of course. If I'm going to be in the NYC area, I damn well am going to take the chance to do some sightseeing.

Ok, just occurred to me, an unorthodox idea for DLC4, but might be interesting...

Near my house, there's a school, which happens to have a Baseball field on it.  I was wondering if, for once, we actually went out and played a game (...besides bowling) and had a big group game of Softball or something.  It would be a break from the normal DLC stuff, and its good picture opportunity to see some of us acting like idiots as we try to play <.<

I have an alternate suggestion, since getting gloves and bats can be arduous.

DODGEBALL.

If I can come I cast vote for dodgeball as I will not play softball/baseball.

If I can't come I cast vote for softball so super can throw bats at Meeple and pretend he didn't know which was a bat and which the ball.

Do something that involves moving faster than a comfortable stroll.

It is not good form for a gentleman to be caught at anything faster than a leisurely trot.  The world bows before my whims and I am never running late, I am fashionably on time and everyone else is just preparing the venue for me.  That said I am sure I can find some use for a bat.

If I can go (which is starting to look slightly more likely!), I'd definitely be up for Dodgeball. It's about the only sport I actually really enjoy playing! (I'm fine with football ("soccer") and softball, I guess, but not too often.)
'Course, I'd be happy to play both too. I'd just prefer dodgeball. ;D
Title: Re: DLCon: Plans, where to go, etc
Post by: OblivionKnight on April 08, 2009, 03:56:25 PM
I will play both if they have it, of course, but I prefer dodgball.  My hand-eye-coordination will likely result in some untimely deaths in softball >_>

I'm down for whatever.  There will be a liquor store nearby I trust?

And before you start judging me, have you ever played Softball while a bit drunk?  It's way better that way.

Dodgeball, probably not so much, but it will be FUNNIER that way.

Barhopping, shopping, sightseeing, and softball all sound way more fun than video games... what have we become? :-X

If we were to go out drinking at all, I'd suggest a karaoke bar - gives us something to focus on instead of 'how drunk we're going to get'. I've noticed that the non-drinkers tend to enjoy the evening more if all of us drunkards are at least intentionally making fools of ourselves on a stage instead of in the street.

That said, I don't think I'll be able to come after the con, but I thought I'd throw in the suggestion.

Well, the question is "How many people have their own baseball mitts?"  We only need enough to support half the players, after all.  We have a few hanging around here (we needed at least 3 since my 2 sisters and myself were playing Base/softball all at the same time), but defnitely not enough.  If you have any, bringing it couldn't hurt, as  would putting your name somewhere on the mitt!

Honestly, not seeing how Dodge Ball would work so well, unless I'm thinking of the wrong kind of Dodge Ball (we're talking about the one that's like the movie, right <_<?)

Soccer is a potential one too...I think we even haev a soccer ball here!

And...Zenny, there's a Bottleking near the Hotel, would that work?

Oh, and Djinn, for the Karaoke thing...we haev Guitar Hero World Tour; there will be plenty of people making fools of themselves, to the point where the game mocks them for doing a horrible job!  Alcohol is not required for that <.<
(I should probably talk myself into playing the game and trying unlock more songs though...)

On a vaguely related note, if those songs aren't unlocked by the time DLC4 is a go go, then I think we have some work to do.

Well, I TRY to talk my sister into playing Career mode when she actually plays, cause she's the one who plays most often, but she's insistant on playing the same 4 songs over and over again (if you must know, she does Beat It, Eye of the Tiger, Living on a Prayer, and occassionally, One I Love)

But yeah, maybe I can get myself to care or something.

Dodgeball has a number of variants. You can play on a field just fine- it's not the optimal arena (A roller hockey rink, in my opinion) but if you have the people who are out act as backstops for loose balls it works just fine.

Neg. School gym basketball court is the optimal form. I much prefer the shooting a basket form of getting your team back in. Teams tend to focus MORE on offense, if it were possible.

Yeah, school gym basketball courts are always good for dodgeball. Although, never played with the basket-in rule... Should try that next time...

I am serious about the shoe shopping.  They sell shoes in Australia.  They don't sell Allen Edmonds in Brisbane to the best of my knowledge though and I know for a fact they have like 3 shops in New York.

http://www.allenedmonds.com/

They are really nice shoes and I have an incredible need to find a comfortable, long lasting, good dress shoe (or two).

Edit - I already have a purse though.

Well duh: New York women don't walk.  They take cabs.

Complete lies.

Hush you and your real facts! Women are totally like in Sex and the City!

</completely awful>

To be clear: they don't walk in heels.  With all the grates, that would be foolish.  Still buy the silly tings, though.

I'd always take a cab too, but I'm the sort of bum who'd take a 1/14,000 chance.

Think I've taken a cab...somewhere in the vicinity of 3 times since I moved to the city 4 years ago.

You are not a woman though.

So, uh. What are people's NYC-style plans for this thing? I feel like some combination of going out for drinks and hanging out in somebody's apartment playing Arkham Horror is in order. Or maybe a play? If you guys think you can handle my artfag tendencies.

Take them for shoeshopping already.

EDIT: Also, artfag tendencies are a-okay for Grefter at least, I'd wager.

Absolutely.  I would definitely be down for a play.

I'd come for a play but I'm not gonna be able to do the whole NY thing, sadly. Ah well. Still, I sponsor you guys going.

You are monsters for trying to force some culture on me.

I really really really would like to go to a play especially if you are in it. <_<

Sadly I won't be acting in anything while you guys are around.

If people are really game, tell me exactly what night you'd be up for some theater and I'll pick something reasonably priced for the group to see.

I want to go! And I'd drag Andrew with me. >_>

We get in eaaaarly Friday morning and leave in the early-ish evening on Monday, though, so I dunno whether that'd give us time to be involved. I got the impression these plans were mostly post-DLC for people who were sticking around. If that's the case... oh well, I guess!

Plans for during are acceptable.

We need to infuse the DL with culture.

Indeed. Bunch of flipping plebs.

Doing a play sunday night is possible in theory? Otherwise I'd think it would have to be monday/tuesday. Trying to get 23-25 people to NYC sounds like a massive headache.

I dunno about Meeple's house, but there's a damn good train from Princeton.  That wouldn't be too headachy (everyone aboard).

I would not recommend Sunday, just due to the amount of people leaving and not having to worry about things that might pop up last minute.

Otherwise, the bus to NYC is the easiest way I can think of from Meeple's house. There's a stop right near his house.

So... show?

My preference is for Sunday night or Monday matinee, though given that Andrew and I need to be at the airport ~6, that one makes me a leeettle nervous because I'm one of those insanely over-punctual (yes, over-punctual) people.

But I figure we should prolly figure out what we're seeing or buy tickets or something, no? Given how long the DL takes to make a decision, it may already be too late.

Due to Elfboy's appearance on Saturday, I'm gonna try to hold the FG tourney then instead of Friday. Anyone object to this?

Did some research, Monday is out. It's apparantly a blackout day and the only shows that ARE running start at 8PM. Sunday is... we're not so keen on Sunday due to the reasons in my previous post.

Tuesday would probably be the earliest optimal time for a NYC trip. I apologize to anyone this might effect.

Well, that cuts Andrew and I out. Maybe we'll find some other way to make it work for us. I hate going to the east coast and not making the most of it. The literal loss of time (3 hours, too) is a bitch I'd like not to revisit too often. >_>

Yo!

Since I will be leaving early Wednesday morning, if there is anything you guys want me to bring, say it now!  I might not see it before I leave on Wednesday.

Oh, maybe MMXCM and an endgame save. My memory is so faulty on some of the basic mechanics (some WE stuff) that this seems like a decent chance to get that straightened out easily.

Oh, same question as OK.

I'm bringing TotA along on the trip for OK, and I have my PS2 modding stuff, but if there's anything specific you want me to look up for PS2 programs(Keeping in mind that if you have any form of USB drive I can link you to this.) now'd be the time to ask. I've got a swap disc equivalent(Cogswap), the USB and internal HD software, and ESR, along with a few other random programs, but if there's anything like a specific type of media player or emulator someone wants...

Oh, Dhyer, do you want me to bring XS3? I'd just bring it, but Jo'ou's expressed some interest in me shipping the game to him.

Going to miss the FG tournament, some stuff has come up. Consider yourselves granted a reprieve, mortals. Not that anyone will likely check this. I may be able to make it over on Sunday.

Man, I'm still tired.
