You know what the downside is of having superior robot piloting skills, a kickass mech to go with it and a surefire way to win yourself to victory with skills like Alert and everything?
You need a robot to do all this. Until you mount that robot, you are puny and worthless.
And it just so happened that, mysteriously overnight, Latooni's mech had become a frozen statue. Shiva claims innocence, and with no way to prove she was the culprit (but admittedly, the judges didn't bother very much), she was announced the victor by virtue of turning the now robot-less Latooni into as solid a block of ice as her mech.

Shiva may have claimed innocence on turning Latooni's mech into an ice sculpture, but it was her that tricked the White Mage into thinking that Cupid was the one and only incarnation of twue luv.
Cupid's resulting rage, in addition to freezing the mech, also froze half the city.

This match was one that boiled down to, "Can Sunset's gun pierce Regigigas defenses?"
Many people theorized this.
Professors from all over the worlds conspired together.
The greatest seers and mages consorted to find the answer.
In the end, it didn't matter. Some lunatic froze half the city, and it just so happens Sunset was in the half that got frozen. He was disqualified for not showing up and Regigigigas won the match.

Bob is a werewolf. Bob can transform into a ferocious wolf of unparalleled power!
Cube is a little, round, sort of weird... machine thing. With healing capabilities. That trigger anytime it gets hit. Either that, or it retaliates.
The entire judge panel watched, rather aghast, how Bob was being slowly beaten to a pulp. Sometimes, the tortoise does beat the hare.

Aya > Deathguise
Deathguise is a harbinger of death, prone to destroying worlds and civilizations with its mighty magics.
Aya is a simple cop, working her damned hardest to make sure things go right at the end of the day.
With one caveat: the power of evolution is on her side.
So, against a world-ending threat, the simplest option is readily available, which guaranteed her the victory. Not that hitting like a freight truck with Liberate hurts her cause.

It now enjoys daily romps through fields of flowers and heroic domination of worlds, with Phoebe as its guide.

Sarevok's tough, but he has two flaws. For all of his powers, he's still just got a sliver of Bhaal's power and thus is not a god. There's also the 'I don't resist PolisPolice's nuclear bomb level holy physicals'. Sarevok's still going to give it a good go, but he can't handle the robot officer from Chronopolis.
