Okay, working on an article for potential publication- can't say much more, but I ask you, DL folks- if you picked up a gaming magazine and saw it had an article about legal stuff in it, which of these issues would be most interesting to you?
1) Virtual Property: Do you own your WoW character, what do you own, what's your recourse, where do you actually own stuff.
2) User Created Rights: From Doom to Little Big Planet, what do you own when you make it in a game's engine?
3) Free Speech in Game Worlds: Basically, where and when can you yell "NEWB!"
4) Emulators and Piracy: Poke around a bit and see what case law actually stands- should you or shouldn't you?
While some of these questions have simple answers (1=no, 4=shouldn't by the letter of the law) They're all meaty enough for an article. I'm also open to other ideas.

I'd definatley read an article on User Created Rights.
I'd most likely read an article about any of the others too, though.
-
Wait, non-Lesbian Orgy related? Damn.

Wait, non-Lesbian Orgy related? Damn.
I thought ahead.

1 and 2 are the most interesting to me, in equal measure. Both sound like excellent topics, incidentally. 3 is the least interesting.
-
1, 2, 4 sound good, kinda have to agree with NotMiki on 3 unless you're looking into how the government's training people to try and catch terrorists using MMOs to train for attacks, in which case it'd be amusing on a basic level.
Voting 4 on general amusement, but.
-
Virtual Property or User Created rights could be good and informative for people (in that it is no to all of the above).
-
You listed them in ascending order of interestingness. That is, 4's the best.
-
4. I'd like to see a good story about the general impact of emulators and piracy in general- surely the NES and SNES emulation fads had an impact on the creation of stuff like the VC.
-
Voted for User Created Rights.
-
I voted for user-created rights. Each one has interesting issues to tackle, but I think that one has the most interesting and relevant *legal* issues.
-
User-created rights gets my vote as well. All of those are pretty interesting in their own right, but I think this option has the most relevance, as well as being quite fascinating in its own right. So, yeah, mostly burping Shale.
-
2 is the most interesting in a large part because it doesn't have a simple answer that comes to mind immediately; 4 follows because the issue is a little more complex than it appears at first glance. 1 is vaguely interesting but honestly I would skip it over because of how obvious the answer is, and thus the article would have to be very creatively written in order to catch my interest. 3 is trite, don't do it.
-
I'd say 4, because I think it is the reason for the VC and XBLA, and the spread of retro gaming as a whole.
Don't do 1 or 3. #1 is just you arguing that the Chinese are doing WoW a favor, and #3 is equal parts boring and sensationalistic.
-
Honestly, it's Fnorder and I really like his writing style, I'd read all of these. Even #3 seems like it could be particularly engaging. Voting 4 because I would possibly read it even if it wasn't written by Fnorder.

I want to thank everyone for their input, which is both prompt and exceedingly useful. I'll keep you guys posted on what gets produced as it comes out.
PS: User created content is by far the winner, and also easiest to sell to my boss, given the AAA titles coming out or out now that use it.
-
OOooooh yeah Spore could be a really interesting piece for that kind of thing depending on what the EULA is like for it, haven't actually read it yet.
-
Spore, Guitar Hero World Tour, Little Big Planet. All going to sell/have sold huge, all with user creation schemes built in, all different policies. Yeah, it's meaty stuff.
-
Spore has the added bonus of the way you publish your content as well, not sure how Little Big Planet handles it, but yeah it also seems like a prime candidate for stuff there with bigger implications cause some of the shit you can do in that is mind boggling apparently, where is Spore is just meh.
