See the topic title. There wasn't much talk about this at the con, and I haven't been around tons in chat to see if it's come up there. Anyone have ideas on where to have it next year?
-
Ah yes, it is about that time of the year again.
I'm still down for DLC Vegas.
-
DLC Japan!
-
Ah yes, it is about that time of the year again.
I'm still down for DLC Vegas.
Las Vegas? Why?
That place is hot and expensive.
-
I think the main argument for Las Vegas is that flights to it are relatively cheap from many places?
Because as a city there's no place in the US I'd less rather visit. I'd also be a bit leery about holding a DLCon in a place where nobody is local.
-
Also more amenable venues in some volume from my understanding of it in past discussions? Ameliorate some risk there for host/organizers in a place that caters to the kinds of things we do.
Not to mention it is just a bit different (as much as I love San Francisco and hanging around Jersey/NYC, change can be fun and interesting).
-
I personally won't attend a DLC Vegas, but I will put on the table DLC here in Vancouver.
-
I would prefer an east coast con myself. I can help host in NoVA but can't actually physically host, as I'm renting a room.
-
Canadian DLC would be rad. Or at least a Mini meet
-
I could probably host, but I live in the suburbs outside of Boston, an hour's drive from the airport (not counting rush hour) and there's nothing in walking distance from my house. Would need an extra driver or two to manage. So I'm not sure if there would be interest in that, but I figured I'd throw it out there.
Plus side: lots of space, we have a dozen or so futons and the like, and Massachusetts is lovely in the summer.
-
DLCBC would make me go do some financing quick smart obviously.
bunch of fucking nerdlingers rolling up on some shakespeare would be rad. Going with Snowfire was pretty great.
-
From what I remember the plusses to Vegas, apart from the cheap flights, is that while the city/Strip itself is expensive, renting a house just outside the city is cheap. The place IS convention capital of the US, so it has a rental infrastructure to support something as small as us. We don't do a ton of touristy stuff, so most of the time for everyone is spent at the house anyway. If it's an option that limits the prices of the flights and house for everyone, who cares what's around it or where it is? Only added expense thing I can think of is car rental, maybe.
I would want to double-check the numbers on Vegas to make sure these claims are accurate though. But the irrational rejection of it out of hand is a little confusing.
Though yes. It would be hot. We were also in Texas in midsummer though, nothing we haven't experienced. The local knowledge angle is about the only angle that holds water to me, if the numbers are correct.
Jim's house is also an option, and I have my passport so Vancouver is also not a bad option but I'd have to check flight prices
-
New work position means that I am very unlikely to make a DLCon that is not based in BC. However, I can totally make a DLCBC!
-
To steal info I only know from Ciatos and Elves, if you are checking prices for travel to BC then flying in to Seattle and getting a bus up to Vancouver ends up cheaper often. The busses are regular, make Customs quite simple and Seattle -> Vancouver is pretty short. They terminate at convenient locations.
Public transport in Vancouver is also amazing. There is trains straight from the Airport to the city(and the inner suburbs!). Once in the regular infrastructure trains, trams and busses are very regular and run very late.
It is good enough that even as not a local I would be confident in getting to and from airport to help ferry people from previous visits.
-
I'd love to do Vegas, but not at a DLC. That's something to do with a small group of friends and a bigger budget than I'd set for DLC.

I'd be willing to get a rental and help with that if it's done up in your neck of the woods. The decentralized location's a bit tough, but at least it'd be cooler(weather wise) than Vegas.
-
I am overstating a little bit how bad the driving is - it's half an hour to the dropoff point to the Boston subway, which takes you directly to the airport. So with planning it is not super bad.
-
I slightly prefer a Vancouver con mostly because my parents live up near Seattle and it's handy to wrap in a visit with that trip. But I've never been to Boston, so that's cool too.
I think I am recovered from the driving rage of previous cons so I could possibly volunteer for that. Maybe. Though NE traffic might make me never drive again.
--
What other people said about Vegas is pretty much it. There are a number of houses in the ~$110 per person for the entire stay range. I also like Vegas -- even as someone who does not club, drink, smoke, drugs, gamble, etc. -- and some day intend to actually go to a show there.
And it may be hot, but it's dry heat, which is infinitely better than the humid heat ridiculousness that comes from summer in Texas.
I'm not going to campaign for it. It's just a thought I throw out when no one else suggests something.
-
I'm down for Vancouvercon. Jimcon is also something I could easily do. Really...I can manage just about anywhere, but would rather not vegas. I'll go if that's where it ends up, but I'd rather not.
Of course I can't drive, so I can't really help with a whole lot besides getting myself to-from somewhere. Also depending on his own funds, Kier may come with me wherever we have it.
-
Oooh, Vancouver con sounds fun! I've never spent any time in Canada and I always hear about how nice the weather is there in the summer. It's also significantly closer to Japan than the other options, so it'd be easing the burden on my budget.
-
I would also favor Vancouver over Boston, but I'm fine with either.
-
My thoughts on a Vancouvercon should be sufficiently obvious. That said, I will look into being able to go if other locations are selected.
-
If held late enough in the year, I may well be able to attend next year. Doubt it though, since I'm not likely to be back stateside until mid August. Still, if my say matters at all Vancouver con would be preferential to Boston Con. I may well be making a West Coast trip after I get back anyway to visit college buddies.
-
I have a strong preference for Boston because it would be much, much cheaper for me, and also I have a bunch of other people in the area I can visit.
I'd be OK with Vancouver, but it might make budgeting a lot trickier, especially given my recent history of being unable to put a string of money together.
Honestly, Vegas is probably the last place I want DLC, mostly because I would feel crushing disappointment regardless of if I chose to spend the time with you guys, say fuck it and dink around at Poker tables, or any mixture of the two.

The answer would be to do both. Drink Super under the table while you win all his money when he goes all in every game with his straight flush down the toilet hand of 2 of hearts 3 of clubs and the flop is a 9 of diamonds, jack of hearts and a 6 of spades.
Then stay an extra week and end up married to Kappa.
-
Wouldn't take a week.
RE: Driving in the Boston area, let me elaborate a bit on what would be involved. Two things are to be avoided around Boston: actually driving into the city, and being on a highway at rush hour. If you can manage that, the driving is fine. The former can be avoided; the latter would depend on flights and the like. For day trips into the city, the right answer is always to drive to Alewife station in Cambridge (about a half hour form my house) and get on the subway. Boston is a small city, and you can get everywhere you would want to go on public transit without much fuss. For people coming to/from the airport, there are two options: drive directly to Logan, or drive to Alewife and take the subway to/from Logan. Logan, regrettably, is a difficult airport to find your way around in a car. Not something I would want to subject guests to our lovely state to if it can be avoided, so I would try to avoid anyone else having to drive there if possible.
-
Wouldn't take a week.
Even Mister VSM deserves a honeymoon.
-
Boston is ridic small. If DLCB falls during a time when I'm not in Germany over the summer, I'd love to join. Vegas & Vancouver nay, but will certainly wish you all the nerd best.
-
Don't have a strong preference for where DLCon is. Just need to know where to start planning!
If I had to choose, I'd be all for a more central or east coast one, since it was west coast last year, but I really don't have a preference
-
Stating a strong preference for Vancouver here. It's the most financially doable, not to mention that if we set the con for late summer (second weekend of August or later), I can actually buy tickets soon if not right now. Coming from Japan makes it difficult if it's east-coast US.
-
I'd support Vancouver Con; I admit the whole "west coast again!" thing is not something I'm fond of but at least it's a different locale, so I won't let that play too big a factor.
-
Since NEB made me look in here to do a quick count of who was favoring Vancouver or Boston, I'll throw my hat in the ring for DL #canucks
-
I'll make a quick little tally of how many votes seem to be going to which area.
Vancouver: 13
Boston: 4
That is significantly more lop-sided than I remembered/expected, but hey! (I only counted people who had stated a preference. Anybody who effectively said "fuck it, wherever" were not included)
-
Either location would be cool to me and wouldn't really factor into whether I could attend or not.
-
http://bardonthebeach.org/
Regardless of location of Con, this year's Bard looks like they are busting out big guns this year.
-
I thought I'd note that I'm fine if we get Boston too, and don't really have a preference. My limitation is going to be more "is it a good weekend" than anything else. The one thing I will say about Boston is that if it's there, I would probably drive to the area and help out any driving if need be. Can't do the same for Vancouver. This is not me throwing in a nod to Boston as much as just going "if we do Boston, consider me a potential driver" and nothing else.
-
Have we settled on a place/time yet? I think most people need to start planning when to take vacation days.
-
East Coast sounds pretty fine with me. I'm not sure I will attend, but it seems fair to have a Con in the east this year.
-
So what's the landscape of a con in either place? The feasibility of hosting and the logistics of where to stay/how to get around are going to matter a lot for planning.
-
For Vancouver, it is easy to get around purely by public transit, and we can try to secure access to a couple of cars if necessary and car rental should be straightforward and on public transit lines. I've looked at house rentals and I haven't found anything that wows me here in particular, so we'd need to do additional research on that front if you guys decided to come here. The general warning about a Vancouver con is that it will be quite expensive to fly to and stay at relative to American cities (although the city's cost will be lessened by the weak-ass Canadian dollar), and you will need a passport to come here. One way of lowering the cost is to come into Seattle or Bellingham, and there is a bus that goes from those locations to here, but it is time consuming to take those options.
-
For Massachusetts, cars will be required to get anywhere or do anything. I live well outside the city, and just getting to the commuter rail to take you into Boston is a 15 minute drive. Getting to the subway is a 30 minute drive. Getting into the city is 45 minutes, not counting rush hour. (Getting to and from the airport via these public transportation options is not difficult, actually. The airport has a free shuttle to and from South Station, which is where the commuter rail comes in on. South station is also a stop on the same subway line as Alewife, the stop that is a 30 minute drive). Between myself and my parents we have three cars, and I can let someone else drive mine and borrow one of theirs without too much trouble. Depending on the number of people attending we will probably still need to rent for transport to/from group events. The local mall and (candlepin!) bowling place are both a little too far for multiple trips.
In terms of accommodation, we have about 10 or 12 futons and bedding to match. Not much in the way of privacy - all the rooms people would be sleeping in would be open. I don't know about local motels or whatnot - I live in Carlisle, Massachusetts if people want to poke around and see what's available.
-
boooooooooooowling! someone -must- get pics of Tallychu bowling if he's at DLC!
-
Bowling is a DLCon tradition, so I don't think that will be a problem.
If it's in Massachussets, you can probably count me in as a driver. I say "probably" because nothing is certain, but I should be able to aid in that circumstance.
-
Let's just take a poll to settle location. (Sadly can't do an actual topic poll because there's no easy way to enforce it to DL attendees).
Also this is assuming that NEB/Ciatokins and Jim are of course 100% OK with hosting it, you guys kind of have more voice than the rest of us by bearing that burden; if hosting it this year would be a bit of a hassle for you personally, please do speak up! I think that is the most important factor.
Otherwise, pick 1 of:
- Strongly prefer Vancouver
- Mildly prefer Vancouver
- Strongly prefer Boston
- Mildly prefer Boston
- Fine with whatever
Thanks.
I strongly prefer Vancouver but no surprise, I tend to only make the west coast cons and I want an excuse to finally accost Excal
-
Strongly prefer Vancouver. To the point I literally cannot attend Bostoncon :(
-
Strongly prefer Boston, there's no way I could get to a Vancouver con.
-
Fine with whatever.
-
I Strongly Prefer Vancouver, though I'm sure that comes as no surprise at all.
-
Fine with whatever. I suspect that given the number of balls I'll be juggling it might be hard to attend this year regardless though.
-
Mildly prefer Vancouver. I haven't been to, so it would be nice to visit although for the most part, even if it was in Boston, I wouldn't mind so much.
-
(including self + Andy as 1 vote and also made it a proper Likert):
<3> Strongly prefer Vancouver
<2> Mildly prefer Vancouver
<2> Fine with whatever
<0> Mildly prefer Boston
<1> Strongly prefer Boston
- Mildly prefer Vancouver
My parents live near Seattle and I have some coordinated summer-time plans that are all (naturally) West-coast focused. Andrew and I could probably pull Boston-con if things swung that way.
-
Can we get anyone else who plans to attend to get their preferences posted to cement this?
(Grefter, Soppy, Gate, Excal, VSM, OK, Meeple)
(maybes??? Niu, Zenny, Dunie)
-
Hey, you managed to get up here and accost me, once... like a decade ago. Yeah, we're overdue.
Strongly Prefer Vancouver
Suspect this will not be a huge surprise to anyone. Also, dunno if the Elf and Ciato have any places they prefer, but I do know two transit friendly bowling locations. One of which I used as the venue of a couple of events when I did party planning back when I did that.
-
Strongly prefer Boston, but I have a passport so Vancouver is not out of the question.
Doubtful I will make it this year barring miracles though
-
I am down for anything really, Boston is new and new is good and exciting. Vancouver and the crew up there I love and will be visiting again anyway if I can.
So. Whatever for me. Mostly just impacts how I plan the rest of my trip and how much time I annoy Sopko for if I can.
-
Mildly prefer Vancouver, since I may be able to swing a stop in Tacoma along the way to pester another internet friend of mine for a bit.
-
I'm going to refrain from voting because I don't even know if I'll be back in the US in time, so I'd rather not have my opinion sway things here.
-
Mildly prefer Boston, thanks for the nudge Laggy.
I chose this because a crap ton of travel plans are popping up for me beginning May and I don't know if I can make it since there are no dates yet. I'm doing a Germany, NYC, LA thing and have a small window. I wish I could make it this year. I've been playing video games. ._.
-
No real preference. Simply put, both scenarios have something that inconveniences me in different ways and I don't feel like figuring out which is less inconvenient!
(That's a cynical way to look at it of course. I intend on going either way, but for some reason I was thinking about it in the sense of "what do I want to do less?")
-
Mildly prefer Vancouver
Closer to activities and shops At first, I thought for sure I wouldn't attend but there may be ways to claim a tax write-off for the travel.
-
Counting strong preferences as +1 and mild as +0.5:
Strongly prefer Vancouver (+4) - Laggy, DJ, Mage, Excal
Mildly prefer Vancouver (+2) - Tide, Ashley/Andy, Gate, DKZ (maybe)
Strongly prefer Boston (+2) - super, Soppy
Mildly prefer Boston (+0.5) - Dunie (maybe)
Whatever - Jim, Dhyer (maybe), Grefter, Meeple
Vancouver +6
Boston +2.5
Anyone else who wants to comment in probably should now, but it's looking likely that Vancouver is the concensus.
-
No guarantees on my personal attendance, but I do have a 20% off coupon for travel on WestJet, a Canadian airline, thanks to the last time I traveled to Vancouver, so Vancouver isn't so bad.
Also note that GenCon 2016 is Aug 4-7, so that weekend would be totally out for me. (Last year's DLCon conflicted with it, for all that I didn't go to GenCon anyway and that weekend was potentially triple-booked...)
-
Since it sounds like it's going to be in Vancouver, does anyone happen to know if there's a Japanese-style karaoke bar in that particular area? I don't mind traveling a bit to find one, of course.
-
That's the kind where you have the individual rooms, right? If so, there's plenty of them out here. At the very least, I know one near the skytrain and next to a great Korean BBQ joint.
-
Yes. It would also be imperative that they have Japanese songs.
For my friend, you see.
He likes to sing them.
-
Given that I have to take two weeks off from work for surgery, and also, you know, pay for that, I strongly suspect I'm gonna be sitting this one out regardless, so my preference can be disregarded.
-
Yes. It would also be imperative that they have Japanese songs.
For my friend, you see.
He likes to sing them.
The friend is me. And probably also him.
But does this mean we have a consensus on place and time? If so, I'll start booking my tickets now.
-
Okay, it looks like DLC Vancouver is going forward. First of all, given this, two things we need to know.
-What dates work best for you?
-Will you be attending? (and/or likelihood of doing so)
General information that may help with planning:
-If you intend to come, are not from Canada, and don't yet have a passport, start applying for your passport NOW. I can't stress this enough. Don't let your holidays be hostage to your government's bureaucracy. The passport is good for 10 years anyway (in many countries, at least) so it's hardly a bad investment even if you end up having to cancel.
-There are a few different ways to get to Vancouver by air:
--Vancouver airport (YVR) is by far the simplest. It's a quick Skytrain ride (20 minutes max) from there to downtown Vancouver, our apartment, and various other parts of the city. The downside is it has high fees to airline prices to Vancouver can be pretty pricy depending on where you are flying from.
--Seattle is about 2-3 hours away by car and 4 by bus. There is bus service (http://www.quickcoach.com/) which connects directly from Seattle-Tacoma airport to Vancouver, with only a small number of stops along the way (though the border takes a while). The travel time will obviously be longer if you go plane + bus, but it might be cheaper. (It might also not be, you'll have to do your research.)
--Bellingham is a small city just across the border from Vancouver. The same bus that services Seattle to Vancouver stops in Bellingham, so you can take that too. In my experience though, the only cheap flights Bellingham connect to relatively nearby parts of the country, but could be worth looking at for Californians.
--You can also fly to Seattle/Bellingham and rent a car (or, if you're coming from California or any other "close" places, drive from there). Do be careful, though: if you're renting, not all rentals will allow you to cross the border. (Some will, though.)
-We will most likely be renting a house, similar to what we've done in San Francisco in the past. The price will obviously depend on what we're able to find and how many people attend. We've tentatively found places which would run about $200 CDN ($150 US) per person for 12 people for 4 nights (Thursday night to Monday morning). You might want to budget a bit more than that in case prices rise by the time we actually get confirmation for dates and can book things.
-Prices for food and similar things in Vancouver are expensive, i.e. similar to priciest US cities like San Francisco and New York... normally. However, the current Canada-US exchange rate is extremely favourable for US travellers ($1 CDN = 74 US cents, at the time of this post), that should help a good deal; this is definitely the best time to visit Canada in this regard since DLCons first became a thing. (I haven't looked into the current exchange rates for Australia or Finland or the UK or Japan or anywhere else, sorry.)
More to come at some point, but for now, that's the basic info. Please give feedback about your availability as soon as possible.

2. CK
3. Alex
4. Jim
5. Zenny
6. Gourry
Not coming:
?
Dates don't really matter to me.
-
Dates pick what works for you.
I will move mountains to get to Vancouver DLC.
-
I will do my best to arrive on any given dates.
-
Hoping to get new job (and thus probably move) this spring, so definitely doubtful I could make it. I should get a passport anyways though.
-
posting a maybe regardless
-
If I can't make this DL Con, I can't make any DL Con. Assume I'll be coming. And that I'll be around whenever it is.
-
I am a very tentative maybe. If I do come, it will almost certainly be as a package deal with Laggy, so his availability dates are what matters.
-
A tentative date would be August 11-15th. It meets Djinn and Snowfire's requirements, and after August 4th is preferable for Elfboy because he will be off work the month of August after those first couple of days.
Any major objections?
-

-
anything from late June through first half of August is fine by me. pretty sure I should be available for the 11th through 15th (I think Professional Development week starts right after that, assuming I still have this job. This is less cynicism and more me in a legitimate "????" scenario.)
Other details I tend to work out over time like sleeping and such. Based on how history has shown, I tend to be the one who gets the hotel room so when things get more...secure? I'll do that.
-
I'm not even entirely sure that August 11-15 date will be late enough to ensure I won't have work, but I am determined to see if I can't negotiate making it work with my company since this time I have enough forewarning and it should be very close to when the vacation days are anyway. It would have been perfect last year, so assuming no major school reforms, it should still be fine this year though.
-
I would prefer earlier than later in summer due to having to save vacation days for October, but early in August would be fine. If NEB is off at the start of the month, like say Aug 4-7, that'd be nice.
EDIT: Just saw that NEB doesn't get off until the 4th. I would still be fine with 11-15 if that works out better.
-
Maybe. Have some family vacation stuff in August that has yet to solidify, so it will depend on timing. I don't have dates for that yet, so can't say which times work better for me.
-
I obviously intend to make this DLCon, but I do have a definite no-go for August 17-19, and would very strongly prefer nothing be happening August 16 or 20th either. It doesn't sound like that'll be an issue, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.
-
I'll probably be able to make it sometime after August 8th or so, but I'm still a maybe. I have to see how chips fall with regards to me moving back home, and how much money I have saved up/whether I have a job lined up for when get back.
-
Since it looks like y'all will be having a con in Canada land and most of us aren't Canadian, and I work with passports, I figured I'd talk some about getting passports.
SO
I'm doing the math for you, but US Passports are gonna run you 135 dollars. I'm making some assumptions here. 1)You're getting the book and 2)You're getting a first time passport.
Go here. https://iafdb.travel.state.gov/ Stick in your zip code. Apply at that place. When do you apply? My recommendation is at least 7 weeks ahead of schedule, but honestly, more than that if you live in California, you guys are backed up. Apply early. Not applying early will come damn near to doubling your total cost and might not get you a passport anyhow.
What do you need?
A birth certificate. The original or a copy directly from Vital Records. No photocopies. Valid ID. A photo. Have a professional take the damn photo. Did I mention 135 dollars? Yeah. That's it.
-
I can't make August, go figure.
But wishing yall well. Someone try the meat cupcake place.

Do you need all that if you're just renewing? Mine expired just last year.
-
If it's a ten year passport (and also less than 15 years old, in good condition, and from a time when you were over 16) and you're renewing, grab form DS-82 from here
http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/forms.html
Send the old one, the form (black ink), the new photo, and 110 dollars (check or money order made payable to US Dept of State, put your name and date of birth on the check) to the address on the form. The routine service one.

I'm still interested, but per my earlier comment, Aug 4-7 would be outright no-go dates for me.

Yes way, Ted (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meat_pie_(Australia_and_New_Zealand))!
-
Vancouver's August weather is generally fantastic. It's around 70-80 degrees every day and rarely rains.
https://www.vrbo.com/816040
This is the place we are looking at renting for the Con. It's in a decent location for public transit both to the airport and to downtown Vancouver and not too far from our apartment and a host of restaurants. Since the turnout will probably be relatively lower, and a since a few of us live in the area anyway, we probably won't need a huge house.
For anyone who is interested, there is a Shakespeare festival going on in the city during the summer (http://bardonthebeach.org/). If anyone besides Grefter wants to come, we can try to plan an evening for that.
-
Aug 11-15 is fine. I'll definitely make it.
-
There is a non-zero chance I'll have a work conflict August 11-15, but it's only barely non-zero so it'd probably be fine.
