General Chat / Re: It returns! Random questions with Super in 2019.
« on: March 27, 2019, 02:55:47 AM »
Law questions. Would you support:

1. A law that raised the smoking and vaping age to 21.
Yes.  Absolutely from a health standpoint.  Damn kids don't understand vaping and how bad that shit is.  Smoking is on the drop in the US, but vaping has gotten stupidly popular.  Brain development is still occurring into the mid-late 20's.  And kids will still find a way to get them before 21, just like alcohol.  There is some evidence if I remember correctly that age increases help public health metrics, so this is a good idea.

2. A law that banned home schooling and restricted private schooling.
Probably not?  Although some of the horror stories I've heard and seen about these schoolings...the point being, home schooling places the kids at such a disadvantage that they don't really become part of society, effectively (hey, the world is connected, deal with it).  I generally think home schooling is such a damn disadvantage that it shouldn't be allowed (no parent will ever be capable of teaching everything kids need).  Private schooling I am ok with, but fucking burn all the charter schools to the ground (and if they're online only, banish them to fucking 4chan).  And standardize/regulate the damn private schools that remain.

3. A law that jailed parents who avoided/refused vaccinating their children without medical need (IE children with autoimmune disorders)
Absolutely not!  I wouldn't support jailing in this case...
...
....
.....
Death penalty for not vaccinating children without a true medical reason.  These reasons are Goo King Sword rare, and that makes herd immunity actually effective.  Having seen 4 fucking measles cases in the last 4 years (with pretty gruesome outcomes) is 4 cases too many for a lifetime when it should be eradicated with ease.  Seeing the push from the idiots in states all over to have more conscientious objections is moronic and a fucking public health crisis.

4. Term limits on congress? Something along the lines of two terms for the senate, six terms for the house.
Yes and no.  Don't know how much, but I think 2/6 is pretty decent (12 years is a solidly long time...then you can run for the other one and make it 24, then do whatever, so it's a solid career).  New blood is important (although experience and leadership are good too!).  On the other hand, I think there are a lot of other issues to work on first (corruption, lobbying, etc.), and if you fix those, this probably doesn't matter.  Supreme court is another one to consider, and that to me is more important (but again, if you fix other things...I think it doesn't matter)

5. A law that restricts the ability of non US citizens from buying real estate?
Eh, no?  I can see the arguments for this one, but it doesn't feel right at all.  SO many other things to consider and work on here before even thinking about this option.

Wheel of morality:

6. Would you have any objection to working for a company that did things you found to be morally abhorrent? IE tobacco company, a weapons maker, oil company, a payday lender etc.
Well, I don't do this now, so I guess the answer is yes?

7. Have political or moral disagreements damaged relationships with your family and friends in the past few years? If so, how much?
My one brother in law has some...interesting political viewpoints that I could see causing an issue down the line (his views on homosexuality in particular are pretty abhorrent; wonder how he felt when most of my wedding party was gay?), but we generally don't bring this up.  So in practice, no, but hypothetically, yes.

Travel:

8. What's the last vacation you had? Did you enjoy it?
Business trip down to Roanoke, VA.  I did, especially since I didn't pay for it :)

9.  When you travel, do you prefer to fly, drive, or go by some other means?
Depends - I do like driving, and I drove the 6 hours to Roanoke.  I'll be in...NY probably in October (have to see what my schedule looks like), Las Vegas in December, and those are just a little too far to drive.  Anything around the 8 hour drive mark I like to drive, after that it's a little annoying and I fly (I'd prefer fast train travel, but there aren't enough of them).

Home

10. Does where you live have a homeless problem? Do you ever give money to the homeless?
It has a problem, but not as much as other cities (just on the basis of being smaller and more decentralized).  I don't give money directly, no.

11. Do you have a strong opinion on gentrification?
No?  I'm a strong believe in some strong central government work to help make affordable housing, but some upscaling I think is good.  Just not pricing people out of their homes.

12. Could you live without a car/rides from family? Would you want to move to an area where you could give up your car if so?
I wish I could live without a car!  Again, would kill for a train or something else public so my work commute wasn't 1.5 hours one way.

13. Do you live close to where you grew up? If not, do you want to move back home?
Hell no to both.  Central PA is not a place I belong in anymore.  Trying to get my parents out of there too.

14. Are you currently a homeowner? If not, do you plan on buying a home in the forseeable future?
3 year house anniversary at the end of April!

Entertainment:

15. What book/game/TV show/movie are you excited for next?
A lot, but right now, the hype is for Avengers: Endgame.

16. Do you watch TV? Do you watch any video streamers?
Yes.  A lot of it is recorded on DVR or Netflix, etc.

17. Do you play any board or card games? If so, what is your favorite?
Tons of board games, but just not able to play any recently (need people for those!)

Long term:

18. Look at back at your life 10 years and 5 years ago. Are you where you expected to be?
To avoid a long diatribe here - about so, yes.  The work-life balance could be better, but that's partially because of where I live in relation to where I work.  Hopefully full professor promotion in 5 more years.  Have a house, married, etc.

19. Do you worry about retirement/career stuff long term much? Are you happy with where you are in this regard?
To an extent, but I've been working to take care of that with retirement, savings, etc.  I'm happy so far, especially after 30 more years of savings.

20. What is one thing currently about you that would surprise the 18 year old version of yourself?
A lot that could be said here.  I suppose what surprises me most is that I'm not really surprised.  I still see who I was to an extent, and while I have a lot more hard-earned wisdom about things, the 18-year old me would probably still be surprised at the stupid mistakes 35-year old me is making.

So...I talked to Snowfire last week about this, but I'm officially posting it now:

While I know it's late, I have to unfortunately de-confirm.  My mother had a significant surgery yesterday, and I've been staying home to help her recover.  I was thinking she might recover quickly enough I could come out on Saturday or even late Friday, but with the way it's going, I don't think that's going to happen.  I'll let you know, Snowfire, if I can come in (also, send me an address, PayPal, or something to send money in for my share of things), but I think I'll have to just do the online thing through Dischord or whatever we're using.

So...yeah.  I'm sorry, and extremely disappointed :(

So, I am...

CONFIRMED (thanks to Snowfire's sexy, dulcet tones)

Well, like, 99.97%, just in case something terribly tragic happens (death, house catches on fire, Donald Trump wins a presidential election, etc.).  I'll be busing up on Thursday, leaving Sunday, if that works (will pick up my ticket soon).  If we can coordinate some bus arrivals at once, that would probably be a good idea.  I'm coming from Pittsburgh, so about 10 hours (6 if we drove straight there, but buses).

Who wants to see a show?  Haven't been to Broadway in like 5 years, would love to see something again (Pittsburgh CLO is a great substitute, but hey, I'll be in the area).

Super, remind me to shove my foot up your ass when I am there.

Also, my wife will not be there, since some were asking.

Things have settled down after a very eventful few years.  No issues with wedding, cars, moving, buying a house, to dissuade me this year!  May not be able to do further away ones in the future, but hey, this is doable.

Granblue Fantasy- New World Order vs Shovel Knight- Strike the Earth! Plans of Passage - Mmmm...nostalgia-ish mood?
Chrono Trigger- Battle with Magus vs White Knight Chronicles 2 - The Battlefield Flower (Violin Version) - Violins > Organ
Bravely Default- Wicked Flight vs Undertale- Megalovania - Both good, but skeleton FTW
NieR- Song of the Ancients ~ Fate vs Xenogears- Small Two of Pieces - Very easy.  Song of the Ancients is good, better the more I listen to it, but...no.

Wait, this isn't the finals?  Man...

Granblue Fantasy- New World Order vs Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals- For the Savior - Familiarity I suppose?  I'm happy with either here
Mega Man 2- Wily Stage 1+2 vs Shovel Knight- Strike the Earth! Plans of Passage - Same?
Chrono Trigger- Battle with Magus vs Persona 5- Rivers in the Desert - Yeah...again, both are excellent, but...again, happy with either
White Knight Chronicles 2 - The Battlefield Flower (Violin Version) vs Star Control 2: Yehat Theme - ...AGAIN, ARE WE SURE THIS ISN'T THE FINALS THIS WEEK?

Hollow Knight- City of Tears  vs Bravely Default- Wicked Flight - Ok, this one isn't as finals-worthy, but still...
Undertale- Megalovania vs Undertales- Hopes and Dreams - I'll be the dissenting vote.  Megalovania is awesome, I agree, but Hopes and Dreams just...does it a bit better for me
NieR- Song of the Ancients ~ Fate vs Steins;Gate- Gate of Steiner - Ok, also not finals-worthy, but still...
Persona 3- The Battle for Everyone’s Souls vs Xenogears- Small Two of Pieces - ....ugh.  Yeah, again, either is fine.

Godlike

Xorn (Grandia III) vs Ced (Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War) - So...Ced is Sety?  I could have voted on that for a while.  Xorn smashes, job done :).  Bosses ftw

Heavy

Hugo (Suikoden III) vs Makoto Niijima (Persona 5) - ...so...yeah.  Queen should lose this under my interpretations or if you don't assume the Endure effect.  Queen can equip a fire resistance protector, which will make her 97% durability, 118% vs. fire (all before Rakukaja).  This makes only Hellfire any danger, and Hugo gets one shot of that which isn't terribly impressive (and makes him lose a charge of Funeral Wind which he wants).  He wants Funeral Wind which is...very accurate, apparently, at 80%.  You could argue Queen has some resistance to it, but...no.  She halves curse, but that's only 1/5 of the ID sources in the game, and she's arguably weak to 3 of them (Eternal Rest, Ghastly Wail, and despair) since they're ailments and her Lu is poor.  Having said that, she blocks sleep - yes, there are limited quantities of the storebought items, but they restock monthly, and as long as you buy the Sleep Gem no later than September, you'll be able to get enough to outfit a whole party.  That's ignoring itemization, which is pretty reasonable since there are a ton of accessory materials.  So Hugo hits her with Funeral Wind on his second action, inflicts ID.  If you don't allow Endure, then...he wins.  I kind of see the point in not allowing it, but I allow it - if you assume persona evolution, she can't not have it in-game, and it's a legitimate benefit you use in-game.  If you assume Endure...Hugo has a lot of trouble, unless you're like me and allow storebought anything (including runes) for Suikoden characters.  Then he spams L1 Pale Gate and kills with ID again.  Without that...it's close.  If you assume Yellow Scarf gets all ailments (what were Suikoden statuses again?), then Queen has to basically kill in 1 action which probably isn't happening.  Hugo is kind of weak against magic (96% HP, -14% magic resistance), so shock + Atomic Flare would actually kill.  As would 2 Atomic Flares assuming Hugo got brainwashed or something and couldn't use his runes for 2 actions.  Accuracy and evasion is something that also can make a difference here - Queen has some, but Hugo has a lot more, and all things in P5 are evadable, so she needs to get lucky to hit him with an ailment (or go Judge of the Dead, and they both have 40% evasion or so, but she's more accurate).  So that evasion...plays a role, but how much depends on your other interpretations.  So yeah...this is a bit of a good fight, honestly, depends on your views of a lot of things, but mine push Hugo up top here :(.

Middle

Kevin Graham (The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky The 3rd) vs Seena (Lufia: The Legend Returns) - SOME DAY.  But Seena's boss form probably wins

Light

Seneca (Suikoden Tactics) vs Mint Adenade (Tales of Phantasia) - Boss form!

Yes, that's the conclusion I came to and mentioned above.   It's the perfect combination that spoils her.   There are interpretations that give it to her, as noted above, but it's like the prefect combination.  Queen needed her brainwash gun to be a higher hit rate for this, or to have a disabling ailment that gave technical damage for 2 turns.

Need to take a minute to pull all the votes out, but for QUEEN vs. Solofia...

If you allow EXAs, Queen should maul - 74% average speed for Solofia (granted, turn-based, respect, blah).  Queen can equip for a bit more speed with her Mach Fist, that should allow her to EXA often enough to just flat out kill.

If you add Alena's critical rate into an average damage for DQ4o, Solofia does not heal-lock with a physical (damage average rises to 138, physical + Lightning is 2.26, Queen is 98% durability before Rakukaja).

If you don't allow EXAs and don't take criticals into average damage, then this is a fight.  Solofia barely heal-locks (1.72x damage from Lightning + 0.84x physical).  Queen's evasion isn't supreme unless she's maxing for it (Judge of the Dead + Mach Fist + Maillot = 40% evasion or so), although that probably wins her the fight with the dodges.  Queen has 57% brainwash from one of her guns and 20% dizzy from anoth....

Mmm...20% dizzy on the gun is a 74% chance to inflict.  Nuclear damage gets a technical from that.  And it lasts 2 turns, meaning Solofia will likely miss physicals.  Solofia is only 105% HP.  Technical'd Atomic Flare is  579 x2 + gun attack of ~160 = 1318 vs. a physical average of 330 = 3.99x damage.  So...Queen can kill.  So then we get to the situation where Queen can run Solofia out of MP.  Go first, inflict dizzy.  Solofia can try to physical, and miss.  Queen then uses Freidyne (510 damage technical'd, 1.5x average damage) to force Solofia to heal.  Could run her out of MP then.  Of course, Fendspell...wrecks that.  Zenethian Sword casts dispel IIRC (so if you don't allow item-casts, that's something), so no costs there.  Solofia...probably has the advantage overall.  Solofia just has to cast that Fendspell, and there's not much that can be done otherwise.  Vajra ailments are her best bet here.  Or that gun that inflicts a random ailment.  If you see her being heal-locked, she loses, probably.

Godlike

Palace 7 Boss (Persona 5) vs Xorn (Grandia III) - So...my interpretations make this easy (no EXAs, full form-chain - one of them alone wrecks Xorn, both is just mean).  Xorn is limited against the first 3 forms (Beast of Human Sacrifice, etc.).  Makarakarn spam helps a lot, as it limits Xorn to Thunderclap, his only magic (since Beast reflects physicals).  Moving onto the Wings...he halves wind and electric, and has Tetrakarn.  So those first 2 parts of the form-chain slow him down.  If you don't allow EXAs, or limit them, Char shreds Xorn with that walling.  Tomb, as usual, fails, but that's a lot of durability to eat through.  Thunderclap is only a close 3-shot (1100 damage vs. 3200 HP), Xorn takes a while to kill him.  It's actually worse against the Wings, as that's now a 6-shot.  He might be able to time Death Knell through it, I suppose, but he'll have to eat some damage from his physicals.  The double-acting allows the barriers to go up and damage to be inflicted too.  It's...yeah.  That's just the first 3 forms...the last 2 go with a buff/debuff game.  Xorn can use Despair to stop the Heat Riser/Kaja fun, but not the Kundas.  The offense Xorn has to deal with goes up in this part of the fight...but the defenses are better, so it's the same amount of relative HP to eat through.  Yeah...Xorn needs to have you not allow Char the full form-chain (even then, it will be close), and allow full EXAs (not sure how you'd interpret them vs. a boss fight where speed never matters...I guess consider him average, so Xorn gets 2.5 actions per his one) for Xorn to take this.
Berle (Star Ocean: The Second Story) vs Benjamin (Final Fantasy Mystic Quest) - INVINCIBLE
Ced (Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War) vs Braev Lee (Bravely Default) - Hey, someone mentioned me!  So...my views have always ended up giving bosses tons of durability.  Looking at the averages...Braev is about 44x HP (35000 HP, 2 full heals, average damage of ~2400).  That is something Ced can't break through.  Plus, you know...overkill damage.

Heavy

Makoto Niijima (Persona 5) vs Scias (Breath of Fire IV) - So...Scias is 94% magical durability, 93% physical durability.  Assuming the damage average is 313 for P5, a full clip of her shock gun is 162 + a boosted Atomic Flare of 579 = 2.367 average damage.  That just barely kills Scias (94% magical durability x 2.5 to kill = 2.35x average damage needed).  That...uh...yeah.  She heal-locks with punches.  At worst.  Scias needs to rely on a status (which...is a good shot vs. Queen, but not guaranteed), but Queen can block at least one.  That...also means Scias needs to go first, and he doesn't.  So...yeah.  He is wrecked here.  This even ignores the Endure effect from her confidant...
Solo (Dragon Quest IV) vs Ayla (Chrono Trigger) - Wait for a critical hit of 9999?

Middle

Haru Okumura (Persona 5) vs Tolten (Lost Odyssey) - Man..never really thought about how I view Lost Oddyssey.  With Endure, very easy win for Beauty Thief.  I think Heat Riser, One-Shot-Kill criticals finish it off.  Doesn't help she's faster.  If you take the higher average for P5, of her gun attack is 419 vs. a 313 average (1.338x average).  Using One-Shot-Kill with Amazon Axe, that's 450 vs. 313 (1.437x).  A critical is 2.156x average damage.  And gets her a One More!  With Heat Riser in effect, all those numbers rise by 1.5x.  Tolten is listed as 140% HP with his HP Up, with a 4% physical reduction.  That's 1.04 x 1.4 x 2.5 = 3.64x physical durability.  That's 2 Heat Riser One-Shot-Kills without the criticals.  Just...yeah.  With a 22% speed Ultimate Hit, I can't see that coming.
Seena (Lufia: The Legend Returns) vs Leonora (Final Fantasy IV: The After Years) - And she hasn't needed her boss form yet!
Norn (Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana) vs Lion (The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road) - Yeah, I...think Sleep + Turn2Candy wins it.

Light

Luc (Suikoden 1) vs Seneca (Suikoden Tactics) - Boss!
Flonne (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness) vs Jagen (Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon) - Boss!

Megamari- Title Theme vs .hack//GU Vol 1- Gentle Hands (English) - I think the other one is better when it's slower, before it switches tempo
Hollow Knight- City of Tears vs Xenoblade Chronicles- Mechanical Rhythm - Guess I'm in a slower mood today
Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals- Battle 2 vs Super Metroid- Lower Brinstar - Not a fan of Super Metroid music in general
Bravely Default- Wicked Flight vs Undertale- Spear of Justice - Both are good.  If this were a another Undertale song, it would win this...

Tokyo 7th Sisters- Fire and Rose vs Front Mission 4- Pride and Honor - Mmm...Fire and Rose...isn't bad, but the FM4 song is more together?
Bravely Default- Fighting to the End vs Undertale- Megalovania - Very close.  Was this pool supposed to be Undertale vs. BD?
Undertales- Hopes and Dreams vs Deemo- Parallel Universe - So THIS is my favourite Undertale battle theme...and probably song from the game.  Megalovania is good, but this one seems to fit everything you want in a final fight theme so well
Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Seas- Flying Clouds, Drifting Haze vs NieR Automata- Wretched Weaponry - OK continues his pattern of voting against Nier

NieR- Song of the Ancients ~ Fate vs Final Fantasy XV- Stand by Me - Once again, not a fan of Nier music!  Very few exceptions.  Meanwhile...I like this rendition of Stand by Me, and it's...oddly fitting
Dark Souls- Gwyn, Lord of Cinder vs Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk- Just a Coffin and an Automaton - Mmm...different songs.  I think the former feels more...something?  Sure, let's go with that
Steins;Gate- Gate of Steiner vs Mass Effect 2- Suicide Mission - Sure
Drakengard 3- The Upcoming Battle/Armaros vs Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk- Tasogare - Not really feeling either...

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night- Dracula’s Castle vs Metal Gear Solid 2- Main Theme - MOTHERFUCKIN' ALUCARD IS COMING TO GET YOU BITCH!
Persona 3- The Battle for Everyone’s Souls vs Caligula- Distorted Happiness - Yeah...crush all before you, BfES.  The Velvet Room motif just always clinches this song for me #Personafan
Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War- Zero vs Deemo- Evolution Era - Either or is pretty reasonable here
Sid Meier's Civilization IV - Baba Yetu vs Xenogears- Small Two of Pieces  - ...oh god.  This should be a late match-up.  Uh...shit.  I think the I do prefer the XG piece overall, but happy with either of them winning this.  Giving it to Baba Yetu, for the vote, may change later, gotta think more
