Because pointless hard things purely to make you waste coins = good game design.  Unbeatable games should be the pillar of gaming acheivement that all things strive for.

I want to see ADOM arcade machines.

Oh god the pretentiousness of that article, it burns.  It just reeks of the author going "See I a have a bigger e-penis than you, let me lord my non-existent superiority over you now.  Bow before my invisible cock, you bitches!"

Rob has a point, but it's kinda of immaterial at this juncture. Using the term RPG, even for wRPGs, has always been sort of a misnomer since the video-game medium, until recently, has usually been limited in what it can allow you to do. I would say there are a few actual video RPGs out there, mostly wRPGs. But at this point it's just what the genre has come to be identified as.

It's why I never really got into wRPGs in the first place. I recognize you're not doing much actual roleplaying in jRPGs, but I play it to cut my workload, enjoy a story and get some gameplay out of it. If I want actual, meaty roleplaying, I play an actual P&P RPG. wRPGs just seemed to me to be a lukewarm halfway point between those two things that I never really enjoyed when I played them.

I've always found complaining about "THERE'S NO ROLEPLAYING IN JRPGS OMG" to be pretty dumb, myself. I thought people knew that?

Yeah no RP in JRPGs is not such a huge deal, it is only really offensive when you get stupid on the other end of the spectrum where you get people that claim SMT has tons of RP because it has no plot at all.

I missed this when it first came out, but anyway, Tom Waits doing his weird humor thing, not a song.

Eh, I've kind of realized that I've outgrown jRPGs, for lack of a better term. I require more than being told where to go while I watch cut scenes. Hence, wRPGs. I get plenty of RP from them, but it's the kind you invent yourself. Nobody else is there to tell you "hey, your character just did a complete and total 180," the internal consistency is your responsibility.

"Plenty of RP" in wRPGs?

How exactly is this "RP" being expressed in-game?

I mean, I could claim I'm getting 'plenty of RP' in JRPGs by writing fanfiction to fanwank an explanation about their plotholes...

But I don't think even wRPGs have caught up 'technologically' to a point where they can do anything that resembles a tabletop RP experience...

I think the closest thing here is still going to be an RP server on an MMO.

But admittedly, I haven't played -every- wRPG. Perhaps you could give a few examples of RP experiences in these wRPGs that are RP-heavy?

Like I said, it's the kind you invent yourself. Instead of your character being a min-maxing number machine, you decide to do things a certain way because it fits in to your character's concept. For example, in my new game of FO3, my character's first experience with ghouls was being swarmed by ten of them in a sewer tunnel, so she now shoots first and asks questions later. Having to limp her way to Megaton from the east side of the river without any Radiation meds left her opportunistic and somewhat paranoid, so she refuses to do anything without being payed, and always haggles up the price. Yadda yadda. Roleplaying. I've concieved a character and am attempting to play as them in a realistic fashion rather than a metagaming number factory ala jRPG. Much as I said, the trick is to maintain internal consistency, because there's nobody who's going to say "hey that's totally a 180 for your character and makes no sense."

It is much like an RP server from WoW, except without all the guys who are playing as the half-Dragon lesbian sister of Illidan.

I'm rejoicing because people are generally agreeing that it's better than 2.  Not as good as 1, but that's a tough act to follow.

And Covenant of the Plume it is.  Go go random name change.

It is better than 2. It is damned hard though, as a warning.

Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

I knew Square-Enix was going to go back out on the prowl for fresh franchises to ruin sooner or later.

I can relate to this.  When Web of Shadows interviews were coming out, sometimes I was scratching my head wondering who the hell they were interviewing and why the person seemed to know so little about the game.

The election was a con put on by Obama, his wife, McCain, Palin and a few extras in an Ocean's 11 type plan to steal the Hope Diamond from the Smithsonian. Featuring dumbassery of all kinds on the part of the townspeople and McCain in silly costumes.

No no no! Wait to cast the show until I'm old enough to play Davos!
