RPGDL Discussion / When are the tournament records coming back?
« on: December 07, 2011, 02:58:37 AM »
All the old arena and results pages, character bios and records, BtSes, etc have been broken since Hal left.

Even though we don't run the tournament anymore, they're fun to look at every so often.

General Chat / Do you still play JRPGs?
« on: July 17, 2011, 05:05:07 AM »
Just something I'm vaguely curious about, as the interest in character dueling wanes to almost nothing.

(I realize that a lot of the old regulars in the last 2 categories probably don't come here anymore, but oh well)

Writeup Graveyard / Emelious (vs. Yuna)
« on: August 07, 2010, 03:29:32 AM »
Yuna. The champion of an adoring world. A hero who persevered through her challenges with the help of an exceptionally supportive group of friends. Emelious is chomping at the bit to take out his frustration and kill someone like this. All that rage over his lot in life in his own world, all that shame of being called an angsty wanker in the DL world, all of it will manifest in one brutal, gory Spirit Wail which will splatter Yuna all over the arena before she can buff, summon, or do anything else to win. Maybe this will be the first step towards Emelious proving to everyone that he deserves real respect. Well, after his godlike title and everyone's unchanged attitudes, probably not.

4
Writeup Graveyard / Blanca (vs. Vaynard)
« on: August 07, 2010, 03:21:15 AM »
The self styled White Wolf of Norgard is no match for a real, supernaturally powerful white wolf. Ironically, Vaynard's skill with the halberd might be enough to put Blanca down in a physical battle, but it doesn't matter. Blanca's real offense is the Red Comet spell, and that will bypass Vaynard's counters altogether. Coupled with an advantage in speed, it will dispatch Vaynard easily enough. After beating so many other real White Wolves in his lifetime, this fake he faces right now will be almost disappointingly easy.

5
Writeup Graveyard / White Wizard (vs. Sialeeds)
« on: August 07, 2010, 03:15:20 AM »
White Wizard's position in middle has always been shaky at best, but this week, at least, he won't have to face much of a challenge. The light warriors healbot has always had trouble actually killing things, but it won't be an issue here. While Sialeeds may have looked respectably hardy while traveling with the prince, she seemed to have the toughness of tissue paper by the end of her journey, and White Wizard's offense will look just earth-shattering against it. A single holy should just about kill, even. White Wizard's defensive tricks aren't the best against a mage of Sialeeds's caliber, but they won't be necessary at all.

6
Writeup Graveyard / Garai (vs Rune)
« on: June 12, 2010, 04:14:22 AM »
Well, this isn't the most exciting fight. Garai, expert swordsman fueled by the rage of being killed by a friend and forced to exist as an undead even in the realm of the DL, slices a squishy mage really really hard and turns him into floor paint. None of Rune's magical skills will get to see play here as he is dismembered before he can finish waving his hands or whatever. Even without the pretty spellwork or the promise of a close fight, though, this match will still provide quite a spectacle - Rune's blood will spray in quite some new and interesting directions.

7
Writeup Graveyard / Van (vs Ryu4)
« on: June 12, 2010, 04:06:08 AM »
Van may be a master manipulator at heart, but he's no slouch at face to face combat, and what better way to prove that than by slaying a dragon? Van may not have the early punch to stop Ryu from transforming, but that's not a problem. This Ryu lacks the earth shattering power that the second and third incarnations have, so he'll need quite a few breaths to take down Van - and that means Van will be able to get off multiple mystic artes, which are an assault not even a dragon can withstand. Ryu lacks the stamina to transform multiple times into his most powerful forms and still attack a lot, so eventually he'll be caught in human form, then dismembered in sword to sword combat like the inferior being he is.

8
Writeup Graveyard / Venusaur (vs Raven)
« on: June 12, 2010, 03:16:33 AM »
The citizens of Kanto and Elibe are out in full force this season, and here the two lock horns. As one of the most well known representatives of his world, Venusaur desires to win this as much as its uncomplicated little mind will allow, and it's in a pretty good position to do it. The plan's perfectly simple: Put Raven to sleep then leisurely cut him up. Against Raven's terrible resistance, sleep powder shouldn't need to be used more then once to knock him out for good and chalk up another win for the monstrous guys.

9
Writeup Graveyard / Neclord (vs. Meliadoul)
« on: May 01, 2010, 01:06:28 AM »
And so, the first offering to one of the more forgotten true rune users of the DL is... this. Gross. Too butch and manly to be a fitting bride to Neclord, all Meliadoul's any good for is warm-up practice for the chosen of the Blue Moon. Now Meliadoul's pretty strong, but her best abilities only work on people who rely on equipment to fight, and Neclord doesn't - his powerful dark magic and tough undead body are all he uses, and needs, to win fights. Neclord's black lightning is one of the most hard-hitting attacks in heavy, and they'll rip right through the sluggish and otherwise unremarkable Meliadoul.

I really, really should have started with him. Kingdom Hearts doesn't have a big surge of players in the near future like MK2 does, and he's pretty popular to speculate about. But I forgot about the poor kid when I came up with this idea, so sue me.

There's a problem with the "vs. the world" topics that crop up every so often: "a dur dur let's pit the entirety of mid and low godlike against this champ caliber monster." It is useful to get a grip on how a godlike with ranking potential and a lot of oomph stacks up in practice, but for the strongest ones, most of the lower quarter of the division is kinda pointless.

So here's the rub: Reasonably rankable, strong godlikes are going to face champions. No one else.

Some people in chat said that I should include people like Xorn and Loki who don't have titles but really really should look at their numeric ranks honest. I won't. Don't let me stop you from writing votes on those folks in but I am going to ignore them when (if) I tally things up. Exception: Isolde's quite likely to win a title in a few days so she's in.

Also Menardi is disqualified.

First up: Reicher from Mana Khemia 2, who, with his sword of light, seeks to cleave his way through this group of tyrants for his just reward of a fake 70's pornstache, a mountain of candy, and a nondescript white van.

Writeup Graveyard / Ness (vs. Elena)
« on: January 08, 2010, 11:39:51 PM »
Ness fell hard from godlike, but Ness isn't the type to let a failure like that get him down. He's dusted himself off and is ready to try again. Former middle champ Elena is good for what she is, but in terms of raw power, she's no match of Ness - Ness is twice as tough, can heal for much longer, and can actually do some physical damage if resources run out. Elena can buy time with sleep and silence, but those only delay the inevitable. Grandia status wear off too quickly to clinch a match against someone as tough as Ness.Elena can only heal off a few bat beatdowns to the brainpan, and then... Ness will hit a home run.

17
Writeup Graveyard / Lambda (vs. Cyril)
« on: January 08, 2010, 11:11:40 PM »
For the ultimate glory of a godlike title, Lambda will bear any shame and condemnation - even deigning to fight someone like Cyril! Cyril is the perfect kind of training dummy for Lambda to warm up on - not very fast, not very tough, and only gets 1 shot per action to try and get around Lambda's ultimate defense: Blue Destiny. No matter how hard a punch Cyril packs, it won't matter when Lambda blasts Cyril into atoms before Cyril can land a single one of his attacks. It seems Cyril is still doomed to play second fiddle among godlike wisemen.

Writeup Graveyard / Gafgarion (vs. Neimi)
« on: January 01, 2010, 09:02:04 PM »
Once again, the mercenary Gafgarion has been called upon to quell an invasion. Another band of Fire Emblem folks is looking to take middle by storm, and Gafgarion can't wait to show off his skills which are perfectly suited to beating these rabble. Night sword ignores that obnoxious evasion Neimi has, and its flexible range means that Neimi won't be able to counter it, regardless of which weapon she uses. A sturdy shieldwill block some of her hits, and night sword's draining will undo the ones he takes. All in a day's work, eh?

20
Writeup Graveyard / Isolde (vs. Zeromus)
« on: January 01, 2010, 08:55:24 PM »
Combat IX: Slay a living incarnation of all evil. Materials given: None. Assignment: Apply all you've learned about combat to best Zeromus in a test of brute power! Outspeed him with triple actions, outpower him with added-up damage from timed cards, and neutralize his offense by repeatedly breaking him. Report to the DL arena for the battle - no treck through hordes of weak monsters required. (No students seem to be volunteering to take this assignment, so professor Isolde will demonstrate by herself that it is, indeed, not as hard as it sounds.)

21
Ah, slow. It exists in a sort of grayish limbo between status and stat bust, and varies widely in effectiveness. I've been thinking recently: How advantageous is it to have a very powerful speed bust?

Bear in mind I'm only talking about the kind that interferes with your ability to get turns. Things that mess with speed/agility stats that only govern shit like evade and move don't count.

So, I'm thinking: What game's bosses block it? Which explicitly don't? Which, if any, are hard to call?

Ones I remember off the top of my head:

BoF1: Idle fucks them over, they're vulnerable.
SMT games: No real slow in these, but it should almost certainly be assumed to hit them because every other stat down works on all of them.
DQ8: Depends on the boss. Empyrea's immune, others are varying degrees of resistant, IIRC.
FFT: Also varies, I believe?
FF6/7/8: Immune
Grandias: Affects all of them, though some of G3's recover from it quicker.
Lunar 1: Doesn't matter
MK: Immune, I believe
Saga: Vulnerable
SMRPG: No slow status, but you might extend Fear immunity/vulnerability to affect stat downs in general, so it depends on boss. But none of them are even ranked, so w/e.
SoA: Immune
VPs: Vulnerable by SMT clause
WA1, WA4: Vunerable

22
Writeup Graveyard / Mewtwo (vs. Fou-Lu)
« on: December 19, 2009, 01:41:54 AM »
It's finally happened. After all the seasons and years of stigma, of not being taken seriously, a pokemon has made it to the godlike finals. Can it win? Quite likely. Fou-Lu's defense doesn't protect him against Mewtwo's psychic attacks, and he needs all his health to muster the full strength of Dark Wave - one psychic ought to weaken it enough that Mewtwo can heal it off with Recover.Alternatively, Mewtwo could blitz him by opening with Amnesia, shrugging off a hit, then humbling the so-called dragon god with a pair of psychics. Fou-Lu is not in his element here, and the scheming genius Mewtwo has plenty of options to exploit his weaknesses and win a well-earned godlike title.

23
Writeup Graveyard / Richard (vs. Nephenee)
« on: August 29, 2009, 02:24:20 AM »
Being killed before he could move in his debut was demoralizing to Richard of the already suspect confidence, but thankfully, he has an opponent who is more his speed. Some random bumpkin who ended up as recruit #564701 of a big army... Richard's quite used to towering over those. His accuracy will allow him to overcome the vaunted fire emblem evade with a perfect success rate, while his own evade blunts the effects of Nephenee's counters. He'll be saving his swallow rune for late in this fight to get around the one thing that could give Nephenee a fighting chance: Wrath. Without the threat of wrath or killers giving Nehpenee a lucky crit, Richard's in perfect shape to prove to Mueller that he's worth slightly more than dog shit.

24
Writeup Graveyard / Teddie (vs. Ashton)
« on: July 18, 2009, 03:21:44 AM »
Teddie's sure moving up lately. From the TV world to Earth to the DL Arena, nothing can seem to slow this cheerful bear down! He's looking to be in good shape for his debut here. Ashton may be able to pressure Teddie at first, but one casting of Rakukaja will fix that, and then, Teddie can discover the joys of DLattrition fighting for himself - heal and bufudyne alternated until Ashton is in unBEARable freezing pain. With Auto-Endure as a last resort trump card, Teddie is all set to prove that Everything's Worse With Bears.

25
Writeup Graveyard / Euram (vs. Jin)
« on: July 18, 2009, 01:25:24 AM »
Ah, humility. What a terrible feeling it can be to have it thumped into you! Jin Uzuki may be adept at cutting apart unthinking, emotionless mechs, but he has never had to pit his swordsmanship skills with a noble, passionate warrior such as Euram. Why, if the mere presence of his sister could force Jin to hide under furniture, imagine the stark terror he would be struck with if he witnessed Euram's exploits at the city of Sable! Yes, Euram maybe pompous and arrogant, but Jin is about to learn the hard way why he has every right to be.
