Death of the Movie Quiz
« on: January 08, 2011, 04:14:15 AM »
Because it's been a while so hey, why not? Usual deal, guess the movie and win nothing but slightly less disdain than is warranted for people who do not guess as well as you do. PM me with answers, will keep this open a week, etc.

Quotes are arranged in alphabetical order by movie.

~

1: "What did you expect? 'Welcome, sonny?' 'Make yourself at home?' 'Marry my daughter?' You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. People of the land. The common clay of the New West. You know...morons."

2: "Look at this. Look at what they make you give."

3: "Osbourne Cox? I thought you might be worried...about the security...of your shit."

4: "Vodka-martini." "Shaken or stirred?" "Do I look like I give a damn?"

5: "I know what you're thinking. 'Did he fire six shots or only five?' Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?"

6: "If you build it, he will come."

7: "Death is the road to awe."

8: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

9: "I just want to say one word to you, just one word." "Yes, sir?" "Are you listening?" "Yes, I am." "...Plastics."

10: "The price is wrong, bitch!"

11: "You're waiting for a train. A train that will take you far away. You know where you hope this train will take you, but you can't be sure. Yet it doesn't matter. Now, tell me why?"

12: "Teacher says every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings."

13: "Wax on, wax off."

14: "I know kung-fu."

15: "I am Shiva the god of death."

16: "If it bleeds, we can kill it."

17: "The Humungus rules the wasteland!"

18: "Dead or alive, you're coming with me."

19: "Say hello to my little friend!"

20: "In summary: ears ringing, jaw fractured, three ribs cracked, four broken, diaphragm hemorrhaging. Physical recovery: six weeks. Full psychological recovery: six months. Capacity to spit at back of head: neutralized."

21: "I take his weapon. Both of them."

22: "What would God need with a starship?"

23: "Alright, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up."

24: "For seven years I spoke with God. He told me to take us all to Heaven!"

25: "You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Then who the hell else are you talking--you talking to me? Well, I'm the only one here. Who the fuck you think you're talking to? Oh yeah? ...Okay."

26: "End of line."

27: "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?"

28: "Made it, ma! Top of the world!"

29: "I love the Power Glove. It's so bad."

30: "Hey, it's me!" "Prove it." "You're a dick." "...Okay."

Time's up.

~

1: "What did you expect? 'Welcome, sonny?' 'Make yourself at home?' 'Marry my daughter?' You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. People of the land. The common clay of the New West. You know...morons."

Blazing Saddles, line spoken by Gene wilder.

2: "Look at this. Look at what they make you give."

The Bourne Identity, line spoken by a dying Clive Owen. Echoed in Bourne Ultimatum with slightly different wording.

3: "Osbourne Cox? I thought you might be worried...about the security...of your shit."

Burn After Reading, line spoken by Brad Pitt.

4: "Vodka-martini." "Shaken or stirred?" "Do I look like I give a damn?"

Casino Royale, line spoken by Daniel Craig.

Dirty Harry, line spoken by Clint Eastwood. This is one of four movies in the list I haven't actually seen (others being Gone With the Wind, It's a Wonderful Life, and Scarface).

6: "If you build it, he will come."

Field of Dreams, line whispered incessantly by some unseen force of plot. Only quote that everybody got.

7: "Death is the road to awe."

The Fountain, line spoken by Rachel Weisz (and repeated later by a creepy Mayan priest). Nobody got this one. And though it now occurs to me that this is part of a larger line, I'd guess it's just that no one but me actually watched the movie.

8: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

Gone With the wind, line spoken by Clark Gable.

9: "I just want to say one word to you, just one word." "Yes, sir?" "Are you listening?" "Yes, I am." "...Plastics."

The Graduate, lines spoken by Dustin Hoffman and that old dude who says the plastics line.

10: "The price is wrong, bitch!"

Happy Gilmore, line spoken by Adam Sandler.

11: "You're waiting for a train. A train that will take you far away. You know where you hope this train will take you, but you can't be sure. Yet it doesn't matter. Now, tell me why?"

Inception, line spoken by Leonardo Dicaprio.

12: "Teacher says every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings."

It's a Wonderful Life, line spoken by that little kid.

13: "Wax on, wax off."

The Karate Kid, line spoken by Pat Morita.

14: "I know kung-fu."

The Matrix, line spoken by Keanu Reeves.

15: "I am Shiva the god of death."

Michael Clayton, line spoken by Tom Wilkinson (and later echoed by George Clooney). Nobody got this one, which makes Cids sadface.

16: "If it bleeds, we can kill it."

Predator, line spoken by the Governator.

17: "The Humungus rules the wasteland!"

The Road Warrior, line spoken by that moron who tries to catch a metal boomerang. I gave credit for people guessing Mad Max, otherwise no one would've got this.

18: "Dead or alive, you're coming with me."

RoboCop, line spoken by Peter Weller. May have been too general-sounding a quote that could've come from plenty of other movies, because almost no one guessed this. Somehow it's the main line I associate with the movie.

19: "Say hello to my little friend!"

Scarface, Al Pacino inhaling scenery.

20: "In summary: ears ringing, jaw fractured, three ribs cracked, four broken, diaphragm hemorrhaging. Physical recovery: six weeks. Full psychological recovery: six months. Capacity to spit at back of head: neutralized."

Sherlock Holmes, line spoken by Robert Downey Jr.

21: "I take his weapon. Both of them."

Sin City, line spoken by Bruce Willis.

22: "What would God need with a starship?"

Star Trek V: the final Frontier, line spoken by William Shatner.

23: "Alright, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up."

Sunset Boulevard, line spoken by Gloria Swanson.

24: "For seven years I spoke with God. He told me to take us all to Heaven!"

Sunshine, line spoken by Mark Strong. Apparently this is another one only I watched.

25: "You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Then who the hell else are you talking--you talking to me? Well, I'm the only one here. Who the fuck you think you're talking to? Oh yeah? ...Okay."

Taxi Driver, line spoken by Robert De Niro.

26: "End of line."

Tron (and apparently Tron Legacy, which I guess shouldn't be a surprise). Standard closer to conversations with the MCP.

27: "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?"

WarGames, line spoken by Joshua.

28: "Made it, ma! Top of the world!"

White Heat, line spoken by James Cagney shortly before succumbing to terminal incandescence.

29: "I love the Power Glove. It's so bad."

The Wizard, line spoken by that wanker with the power glove.

30: "Hey, it's me!" "Prove it." "You're a dick." "...Okay."

X-Men, lines spoken by Hugh Jackman and James Marsden.

Scores! Soppy was in the lead for most of the week but Shale pulled ahead at the last minute. I tried to make this one as easy as possible (with a couple token "What the hell, Cid?" nods thrown in), but if there's one thing these quizzes always make apparent, it's that what sticks out in my memory isn't always what's memorable to other people. Ah well.

Shale: 23/30
Soppy: 18/30
Snowfire: 16/30
CK: 15/30

Scar: 9/30
Super: 9/30
Meeple: 8/30
NEB: 7/30

Yeah!  It's a great big movie just waiting to be watched.
Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Inception's next on the Netflix queue, and Michael Clayton is sitting on my DVD shelf, waiting for a free evening.

I'm surprised nobody else got the Robocop line. Like Cid, it's the single quote I associate most with that movie.
"Sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology."

Eh, I remember the "Dick?  You're fired!" part more than anything.  Also, "Madame, you have suffered an emotional shock. I will notify a rape crisis center."

With good reason. The Fountain was a shitty movie and you should feel bad for including it in your quiz. Nyah.

Yeah, these are the stand-out Robocop quotes to me too.

Also how can so few people have gotten the Star Trek V quote (aka "the horrible one").  I'm not even a Star Trek nerd and you HAVE to know that one from William Shatner's wily deductions.  Seriously, the DL would love (to hate) Star Trek V.  It is literally William Shatner's ego project where he re-enacts Xenogears of Kirk vs. God (??) with mystic mumbo-jumbo about secret pains in the background.

I loved the Bourne Identity movies but I can't recall that line even upon being prompted.  Huh.

I'm sorry, but if you can actually remember which of the fifty million Star Trek movies had which stupid plot, then you are a Star Trek nerd whatever your protests~

Nonono.  Just being a nerd entails basic Star Trek knowledge, equivalent to say Lord of the Rings trivia.  Star Trek nerds know things like not just the name of the Cardassian-killing poison that they totally used to scorch that planet in that one episode, but also its background, theoretical mode of function, and usage in some crappy spin-off novel.  Let's be clear here.

Also go watch Star Trek V again, clearly you need to suffer more.

Clearly you need to watch them again. But yeah, this is a case of me wanting to use the movie and just going with whatever line stood out most in my memory. The movies are not high on quotability, really.

The basics of the TV shows, and big-name characters like Kirk, Picard, Spock, and Data? Certainly. Details of which movies have which plot? No, that's specific Star Trek nerd-dom, just not necessarily hardcore Trekkie level. Unless you're implying that I (and many others here, I imagine) am not a nerd, which... no. <_<

I seem to recall that "what would God need with a Starship" is a mid-level meme, certainly not something you'd need to see the movie to know about.  Actually I don't think I ever HAVE actually watched that movie, at least beyond a couple stray scenes.

If I had been unlazy I would have gotten the Star Trek one.

I haven't seen the movie.  But I knew which one the quote came from.

And I would have gotten Blazing Saddles wrong oh god.

Having just finished Bourne Identity, I can say that you chose an odd line to use. Not that the movie had a ton of really memorable quotes, though.
"Reputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself"- Count Aral Vorkosigan, A Civil Campaign

<Meeple> knownig Square-enix, they'll just give us a 2nd Kain
