Risk of Rain is interesting in that it introduced the Command artifact, which makes item drops nonrandom and lets the player just pick what they want.  As far as I can tell, this is a very popular setting and few people continued to play RoR without using it.  ... and then, few people continued to play Risk of Rain in general.

fwiw I don't find it particularly interesting to play with Command.  Far, far too easy, and of course it makes every run extremely samey, since the vast majority of variation that matters is in drops.  I'm not playing RoR right now because it's a bit buggy since they switched engines (they're in open beta testing a new patch to clear it up).

Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Dark Souls - The Caestus, with Magic Weapon on a quality build, is a perfectly viable weapon. I am fuckin shocked. Being a fast weapon with a high stagger percentage helps a lot.

Not a GOOD weapon, mind. In particular New Londo ruins sucks with it, and I probably wouldn't have gotten though the earlygame if not for coop, but by lategame  you can make it work. 100 percent need the magic weapon buffs for it, though. Just not enough damage otherwise.

Tactics Ogre: Cerya Must Die: This mission is sadistic.  7 Cerya deaths so far.  I can entirely see why it's considered the hardest battle in Tactics Ogre.  Even powerleveling doesn't do very much for you (although some certainly recommended it).  So, some details.  Oz & the Templars start at the top of Boed Fortress, you start at the bottom.  So your archers are way less OP than usual, they certainly won't be sniping the squishy backline mages & clerics who will stay high & safe.

* The AI is screwy.  To give Cerya a fighting chance, Oz always passes his first turn and the regular fighters seem strangely disinterested in going for Cerya.  Fine.  Except... the mages will certainly go for her, and Oz will start cracking skulls with a 2HKO to Cerya quite quickly, so you need to hustle it on over.  Healing magic is pretty weak, though; it takes ~2 heals to cancel a single Oz attack.  This means that once the mages start throwing spells at her, it's really hard to keep her afloat; and even if she has full health, Oz attack + 2 mage turns in a row can just plain KO her from full, or nearly so, and you can't guarantee that won't happen even with Slowing Oz.  I might know this from bitter experience when I thought Cerya was safe, but the turns lined up wrong.  Items would help, but...

* ...Cerya usually gets surrounded by 2 Templars to a corner such that there's no room to have Canopus stand next to her and heal.  And the vertical tolerance is way too high to heal from below, or Lobber from below.  So items are mostly out.

* I have seen the Templars blocking Cerya move out before, though.  She used the opportunity to go punch Oz in the face and eat a crit damage counter for 60 or so.  but hey she got 1 damage in so worth right??

* And as a reminder, defensive buffs in TO really suck.  Fortify is like -3 damage a hit or something puny.  There's apparently some aftergame Draconic Magic that will null the next attack but hahahano for having that now.  So don't think about buffing up Cerya.

* Congratulations!  You've somehow, through a combination of AI luck and using Boon of Swiftness, manage to hustle it up to heal Cerya to not die instantly.  Maybe you even killed the most forward Terror Knight, and perhaps the archers raining shots on you didn't get a crit-knockback on your cleric to knock her off the path upward.  However.  Oz has been gaining mad TP from hitting Cerya in the face.  He's got good defense, but if you go in on him, he's just going to hit 100 TP.  And if you don't attack him, he'll, uh, still get 100 TP pretty quick, albeit maybe a turn slower.  And yeah, even when I gave him other juicy targets to hit, he likes Axe ultimating Cerya with Dark Prison.  This isn't quite a OHKO but if Cerya is at anything other than full health she will die, and keeping her at even half health is quite the struggle.  (This is also why being overlevel won't necessarily help - you'd need massive damage to kill Oz so quickly he doesn't get a turn at 100 TP.  Your own ultimates would help but you won't have built up to them before he gets his.)  And yes, Dark Prison has range, so if Oz walked away from Cerya, he can likely still do this to her anyway.

So...  what's the plan?  My own personal thoughts - confirmed that somebody else solved it this way- is something like this: replay the battle until somehow there gets to be some distance for someone to sneak in next to Cerya or Oz.  Don't ask how.  Then get a Knockback-powered blast to knock either Oz or Cerya off the ledge - ideally Cerya, but this only works if she's in good health.  If Oz is knocked down, then just murder him; if Cerya is knocked down, she should be at an angle that makes the mages unlikely to threaten her at least.  I have no idea how I'm going to induce this, but we'll see.

Siiigh.

When I did this battle on PSX (and yes, I did save her), it involved sending Canopus into the battle naked except for a weapon to maximize his speed.  I don't know if this would work on PSP.

I have watched enough footage now to be convinced it's as good as De/DaS.

I caved earlier today, found a Groupon for 10% off a PS4 that was already on sale.  Now I just have to wait two weeks!

It begiiIiIiIiins

Bloodborne: I have no goddamn clue what is happening in this game. Even compared to a Souls game they tell you nothing. The intro's just this old guy being like "You want blood, you got it." And then you're dumped into post-apoc Victorian London without weapons so the first enemy can kill you horribly.

I set out trying to build Ada Lovelace but wound up with more of a repressed schoolmarm. I'll take it. I picked the class with the highest starting "arcane" stat because it sounded like the most magicy/sciency thing available. This does shit-all for me because I started with nothing more to use than gun+melee weapon and I haven't found anything else yet either. Apparently it gets me +item-find at least? (Item find stat is a thing which is back.) There's actually no magic slots on the HUD at all so I have no idea what this might ever apply to or how any mystical stuff might even work out at all in this game, but I have to presume there is something because otherwise what the fuck does an arcane stat even do? (Edit: FIREBOMB DAMAGE.) Also there are four boxes in the upper-right corner of my status screen and one of them is blue and not even the in-game stat description feature will tell me what any of that means. Instead I've just been pumping dex Skill with my levels because at least that gets me marginal damage increases with my chosen starting weapon. Which is a sword-whipcane that is seriously cool to use, not real strong but I can stunlock whole mobs of dudes at a chokepoint. It is good that it is useful because I have found no other weapons yet.

I really have no idea what I'm doing and am flailing pretty terribly (haven't killed the first boss, can't practically damage the goons outside his door so I have to run past them), which would be less aggravating if resource management weren't so pissy. We're squarely back to Demon's Souls healing here and I'm not happy about that at all. Nothing at all replenishes naturally when you die or warp back to the hub area. Oh, you used up all your expendable resources trying to kill the boss and then died? Better get farming, son. (Especially considering bullets are an expendable resource that you have to have in order to do anything more than like 0.5% of the first boss's health bar per melee hit.) This happened several times already and it's why I stopped for the night (it definitely dampens my enthusiasm knowing the first thing I'll have to do when I pick up again tomorrow is go farming). Why you gotta make me waste my time, From? I thought we'd grown out of this. I've also not found any significant shortcuts (though I can run past everything on the way to the boss without too much trouble). There's a bunch of side paths I could take other than fighting the boss, but so far they've all proved to be full of dudes who 2HKO me and laugh at my pitiful attempts to damage them. That or rat mobs. Or both. Also gravity.

Random other statements before I collapse for the night:

-Poise does not exist, item weight doesn't even exist, and I take from this that armor proper doesn't exist (I'd be surprised if even shields do, but then again I have seen some mooks using a crappy wooden one). This doesn't bother me a great deal since featherweight dodgehax is really how I got used to playing DS2, but it does make learning enemy attack patterns really rough the first time through.

-There's a persistent gore effect that builds up as you kill enemies. I could do without this; in Dragon Age it just looked silly, but in a Souls game it ruins my wardrobe.

-Load times are appalling, which is obnoxious as you'd expect in a game built around dying repeatedly. Supposedly they're working on patching this. They'd better.

-I used my one humanity-analogue to try and summon someone. No one showed up and it ate the item anyway. Thanks, game. (I guess this shouldn't be a huge surprise since I haven't found the summon sign item yet either.)

-There was a big mean glowing eyes scythe dude guarding this one passageway? That looked significant so I blew all my post-leveling souls echoes on molotov cocktails to chip him down safely. I had to use all of them and there was nothing past him but a loot-free dead end. Thanks, game.

-SMALL HEAD physique is back you guys.

-0/10 game if I don't find a fabulous Victorian dress to incinerate monsters in.

I really can't have a strong opinion yet because I'm still not even on the learning curve. I seriously wish they'd at least stuck to the Dark Souls healing system in some way, though. It was so much more efficient with regard to player time.

Forgot to mention:

-PSPlus is a requirement for online mode. So, you know, be prepared to shell out some more money if you don't already have that.

-Recovery is weird in this game. Sometimes there's an (annoyingly hard to spot) bloodstain, sometimes you have to kill the enemy that killed you to recover.

-On second glance I realize my character is basically distaff Geddy Lee. So basically Geddy Lee. Okay.

STILL HYPED

Can you buy unlimited healing? How expensive is it compared to the stones in Dark Souls 2?

I heard that at least you can't carry unlimited healing with you, which was my biggest complaint about healing in DeS. Estus remains way better , but at least only the first playthrough should be affected by this problem (and challenges, oh god)

How are combat/architecture/fashion?

You should take everything I say with a degree of skepticism because: A) I bitched a lot about Dark Souls 2 and still wound up enjoying the hell out of it and playing it way too goddamn much; B) I'm still really early in Bloodborne (haven't killed a boss); C) I tend to see the negatives in a thing first anyway, that's just my nature; D) the game is really fucking hard and frustration may be punching the keys once in a while. Nevertheless, point by point:

-Maybe 3-4 standard goons might fuel the purchase of one item where I am right now. I can't easily buy things in large quantities without making multiple farming trips. Healing item inventory caps out at 20 items and the shots I have available heal maybe half a full health bar. Attack items appear to have an inventory cap of 10 (20 for bullets). Drops of both are reasonably common, but not so much that you can wholly evade having to farm up more if you happen to totally exhaust yourself on a failed boss attempt.

-The weirdest thing about combat is just that I have no options other than my starting weapons. (Alright fine I do also have a torch.) I've found no other weapons, enemies appear to drop only consumables, and that's all the one basic vendor I've found sells as well. Obviously this isn't a Souls game, but you know I can't help but compare it to one, and that is really goddamn bizarre for a Souls game since there's usually a horde of weapon options available from the get-go and one of the key things is just sorting out which type suits you best (and this possibly more than anything else has fueled so many experimental Cid Souls builds). I don't know what to make of this. It's not quite as limited as it sounds because melee weapons have two forms (I hit L1 and my cane oscillates between sword and whip, for example), but still, it's strange to see available inventory be so extraordinarily stripped down and minimalist in a From game. It could be I'm just not far enough in that the game thinks I deserve getting new stuff, but I tend to suspect they want you to commit to a much smaller arsenal this time around.

Otherwise, there's no poise, so far no shields, and backstabs don't exist, so you better get good at dodging. There are critical attacks of a sort, but you have to stagger enemies first and I find I'm almost never in crit range after doing the prerequisite heavy attack. I'm guessing this is how you're supposed to deal with all the really tough enemies that presently take like twenty normal melee hits for me to kill (I'm estimating, of course, because they just kill me first). I feel amazingly incompetent playing this, like almost as bad as when I first played Dark Souls and didn't realize lock-on existed until like the Depths (except I had way more things to try out before the gargoyles than I've found so far in Bloodborne). I feel like I've made no progress at all and I'm doing absolutely everything wrong, which I might well be since I'm going in with reflexes wired for Dark Souls and this isn't Dark Souls. I can't even tell if there are i-frames, I mean there probably are but I haven't internalized this game's movement into instinct yet so every time I get hit I'm still yelling at the screen "How the hell am I supposed to dodge that?"

You can get some health back after taking damage by immediately striking back at an enemy before your healthbar can drain, but usually I find it more worthwhile to just get the fuck out of the way before I get hit again. Knowing you you'll probably try to leverage for this feature for all it is worth and maybe possibly die a lot for it. >.>

There's no leveling at will, you have to go back home and talk to Suigintou in Black to do it, but at least you don't have to button-mash through dialogue whenever you want to level this time.

I went ahead and looked up where the summon sign item turns up. Apparently you need ten insight (think humanity) to open up a certain shop and then one more insight to buy the item. I had one insight. I don't anymore and it sounds like a rare find. How often did you ever have ten humanity in stock the first time you played Dark Souls? So yeah, I don't expect to see multiplayer be any kind of thing until very far into the game. This feels like early edition Dark Souls when humanity didn't drop from bosses and Sunbros took 50 faith and they patched it because they realized these were terrible ideas. I definitely expect similar patches for Bloodborne if I'm forecasting things right based on (admittedly possibly sketchy) information.

-Architecture is outstanding. They really tried to exhume the spirit of the Prison of Hope and pour it over a whole city. Yharnam streets are stacked with coffins and human bonfires and crucifixins and the minor detail on every surface is extensive. This is all a huge step up after Dark Souls 2's often underwhelming environments, though admittedly I really hope the later zones mix things up because I don't want to run through an entire world that's grim in exactly this manner. Actual level architecture looks pretty promising in its own right? I haven't had a ton of chance to explore since all side areas so far are full of things that will murder me with ease, but I've come across a number of winding diversions that have a nice sense of verticality to them and I'd definitely be intrigued to suss out how everything connects if only this were actually tactically feasible right now.

-Fashion? Well uh I'll let you know if I ever actually find any other clothes. No seriously I've found nothing other than my starting set (which is admittedly fairly swank) and one buyable set. This is weird, see above points about weapon scarcity, same grounds for bewilderment.

First boss is down. I feel marginally less fatty fatty fat fat now, though not at all because of that fight and more because I have other places to explore now (which it turns out I could've reached without fighting him anyway). I just stocked up on molotovs and wore down like 75% of his healthbar with those, then flailed like an idiot trying to chip down the rest. You're obviously supposed to stagger him with headshots and then critstab him, but I have no idea what the proper window of timing is for a hit to stun him. So instead I just burned a lot of HP to turn into to bullets to plink down like 20 HP at a time. Lame, but a win's a win. Too much stuck-in-corner cam in that fight, glad to leave it behind. Also I bought the other armor set, which might have helped a little because higher defense in a From game clearly crucial?

I found another boss and HOLY FUCKING SHIT WHAT IS HAPPENING

I won on the first try but it was so terrifying that I had to stop for the night anyway. Jesus christ. How do you make just one normal dude scarier than the Four Kings? I don't fucking know but they did it. New music guy's doing a man's job sir.

(Tomorrow I'll boot it up and see whose corpse pops was lacerating. Although I'm pretty sure I know. Seriously that was amazing, I just walked out of the room shaking all over.)

So item management's a bit less of a hassle than it looked like? Any items you pick up that are for a type you already have at max capacity magically warp into storage at home base. I'm pretty often at max while exploring at this point (boss fights are a different matter holy shit man) so stuff is starting to stock up. I cannot get the hang of staggering dudes with gun or melee, but I've got some weapon upgrades and some levels behind me and whipping dudes the old-fashioned way is starting to work out pretty well. Starting to get the hang of things finally!

EDIT: also I found a boar. He met exactly the fate you should expect.

There's no leveling at will, you have to go back home and talk to Suigintou in Black to do it, but at least you don't have to button-mash through dialogue whenever you want to level this time.

Also I was totally wrong about that latter part. Oh well.

EDIT EDIT: ambush bridge! It sailed right over my head and I didn't even know it was coming. Hooray for dumb luck.

Bloodborne: Two hours in. It is pretty cool!

Name: Yattaf
Class: Waste of Skin (lol)
Weapons: Axe and blunderbuss.
The axe feels really good, I am OHKOing regular dudes, dogs and crows with the slow-but high reach/high damage two-handed R2. I'd rather have a victorian giant club that turns into a bigger giant club with a monocole on it, though.
The shotgun also feels good, I really wonder how the pistol fares in comparison. Since the game is showering me with bullets, I use them on just about every bigger than average dude.

I am deeply regretting picking Waste of Skin as a class because I have found no way to level up yet. So I've spent all my souls on healing. I have 62 healing things right now. Score.
I don't really mind the change, it's way better handled than DeS. The big difference between this and Dark Souls in that regard is that using estus costs you nothing while using one of these costs a liiiittle bit, just enough to regret having to heal, and to push you towards attacking the enemy to heal back instead. (bad idea)

You can get some health back after taking damage by immediately striking back at an enemy before your healthbar can drain, but usually I find it more worthwhile to just get the fuck out of the way before I get hit again. Knowing you you'll probably try to leverage for this feature for all it is worth and maybe possibly die a lot for it. >.>

Yes

I am pretty damn lost right now. I have already unlocked too many shortcuts and I don't even remember the first way through the levels anymore. I'll study the environment a bit more to figure out where everything is.

-Fashion? Well uh I'll let you know if I ever actually find any other clothes. No seriously I've found nothing other than my starting set (which is admittedly fairly swank) and one buyable set. This is weird, see above points about weapon scarcity, same grounds for bewilderment.

I'm sorry Cid, but git gud at fashion because I already found a third set.
So far everything is super dark, hard to differenciate, and blood does ruin everything anyway.
