If you play dragon age inquisition by sticking mostly to the critical path and ignoring the big empty map sidequests, what are you missing out on? Any interesting side stories, any powerful material rewards?
There are side stories, but most of them are fairly inconsequential and/or fetch quests. There are dragon fights that are worth pursuing since they are good fights and tend to drop some good equipment, but otherwise, I would only really close fade rifts to get experience and power. If you seek those fade rifts in new areas, you should be able to get some materials on the way. Leave the Hinterlands if you haven't. It tends not to be worth it to milk everything you can out of an area.

Bayonetta 2: Finished stage 15, so I think the next one is the final? Mecha-Witch was surprisingly fun to play, to the point where I'm now saving halos for the Devil Earrings. Fuck that last Remembrance of Time with a spike, though.

He was?  Shiit I tried them and it didn't take, but that was when Black Bow was thinking off him before some upgrades and my regular bow was out of range.

Depends some on stats since I think DEX and ADP affect poison infliction rate? Should have plenty if you went quality build. 40 DEX and 20ish ADP makes it usually something like four arrows to trigger status on an enemy with no resist, maybe neighborhood of six-eight for the more respectable bosses. Anything more than that and they're probably too resistant to bother trying. Very few are actively immune, though (Mytha/Najka/Freja pretty much it in the main game; DLC of course makes everything but the scrub bosses immune to status). All this is assuming no allies; enemy resist ramps up so severely with summons present that status stops being worthwhile to even try.

Dark would've been optimal for damage though, giants have basically no resistance to it at all.

I might not have shot enough at him to trigger it maybe (why can't you see enemy status bar build up?), I was running low on poison arrows so might have been overly conservative.

My build had 40 Dex and 30 something ADP because once I was 40/40 I wasn't sure where to spend more points so more Agility seemed like a good thing.  So probably just me not trying hard enough.

Couldn't do Dark damage because "Fuck you guys you can't tell me what to do help signs!" and freed Navlan without knowing what the lever did because why would I go right first in Aldia's Keep when I could clearly see a fog door there?  Was hollow.  No Dark Arrows for me.

Oh whoops, oh well.

DS1 - Started up for giggles I figure.  Feels weird.  Rolling feels like you have about a billion invincibility frames and you almost wonder why you ever die and then you remember you suck at this game.  Died to Taurus like the scrub I am (roll in to geometry).

Also it feels really really nice to not have your weapon bounce off literally every single fucking surface it goes near.  You still need to manage your swings in spaces, but holy fuck does DS2 love to make everything cramped and then go "WHY CAN'T YOU SWING YOUR WEAPON PROPERLY SCRUB".  It still happens occasionally, but really not that big a deal.

Got talked into trying a dex/int build and use Moonlight Butterfly Horn.  Noticing that the only req other than Int is starting Str of Pyro kind of sealed the deal there.  Will level some boring Dex weapon for Artorius if I ever get there.

The one handed hammer move set is legit.  Regular attacks are good on vertical coverage and strong attacks have good horizontal for clearing multiple enemies.  I started Club, got Mace and ended up using Craftsman's hammer (Mace kept because durability is a real issue at 60 fps).

As for monster health, I suspect the reasoning behind not displaying it is largely obfuscative and/or psychological.  There's almost certainly an element of trying to minimize the "gamey" aspects of the game, that is, presenting the game as a fantastical monster hunting simulation moreso than as a simple game; this is, IMO, (weakly) reflected in the fact that the game gives you the option of toggling the HUD off completely, so you can't see your own health/stamina either.  I don't know of anyone who actually plays like this, but it does expose a bit of the design mentality in play here, I think.  Really, though, I think the much stronger argument for why this design choice was made is one of subtly manipulating player psychology; the player is going to approach each encounter much differently in the absence of such information.  A player who knows the monster only has 75 HP left is going to take much larger risks to burn that 75 HP off than one who only can see that the monster is limping, and "limping" could mean 75 HP or it could mean several hundred and you have no way of knowing.  (I can speak from definite experience here: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on the PSP had cheat codes to display boss health on-screen which I used, and I *still* haven't completely "unlearned" the much more risky playstyle I adopted in that game, to the point where every friend I play with constantly points out my general lack of caution in multiplayer.)  MH's design is built all around rewarding caution over speed; there's a reason that they give you 50 minutes to complete each quest, and it isn't because you actually need it, because most of them can be completed in 10 or less.

And that's fine, except why exactly is there a timer at all?  If you want to simulate slowly stalking a giant monster to its death, why not let the player slowly stalk it to death?  Like the Edge battle in MGS3?  The timer forces players into a mindset of "gotta go faster"; combined with the huge stamina loss from how much you have to eat in those 50 minutes...

Archaic design principles aside, I am enjoying the game.  Just finished the Tetsucabra armor set, still doing 4 star missions.

I would guess the timer is explicitly there for the reason you suggested: to keep people from turtling too much.  (I actually have run it out once before, when I attempted a quest in Tri I was badly undergeared for.)  Possibly also to keep people from wasting too much time in one place; it might be one of those arbitrary things they designed in as a deterrent to playing too long without a break.  MH4U does break from it somewhat, since IIRC the Expeditions don't have a timer, but yeah.

Re: LoT2 stuff - I have seen people say the final boss is doable at challenge level, but it does take some of the specifically broken synergistic team setups.  And Nitori, because Nitori is the game's most broken PC by far.  Fucking Maintenance.  Absolutely absurd skill.

But yeah, tl;dr I think PC balance was actually quite a bit better in the first one, even if the second one is more mechanically diverse/interesting.

Top-tier sorcery works perfectly fine on Artorias. If you're just going to leave STR/DEX at minimum weapon reqs and pump INT, Soul Spears should handle him just fine. It's multi-element weapons that really get walled by his resists; any kind of offensive spell is still at least functional.

Moonlight Butterfly Horn is pretty cool. Not spectacular as far as numbers go but I use it as melee backup for mages just because it's one of the neatest looking weapons in the game (probably only Quelaag's Furysword tops it for aesthetics, that thing is so fucking metal). Obvious downside of course is no availability until Anor Londo. Mechanically you get to ignore physical stats totally because its damage is purely magic and scales solely from INT. Mostly this is a good thing, until you're fighting golems and suddenly you deal like no damage at all. Spears are generally low damage weapons, but it's still kind of a neat accessory for a caster to work through mooks at safeish range while conserving spells. It has niche uses, which is more than I can say for most boss weapons in DS1.

Moonlight Greatsword is pretty much the standard INT weapon, but that's an even later pickup, requires more investment in STR, is kinda heavy and chopping Seath's tail is pretty bitchy if you don't have helpers to distract him.

Maybe someday I'll respond to something that's not Soulspost

The timing of MLGS was exactly why I didn't want to bother.  I don't give a shit about a weapon that I am going to use on 5 or 6 bosses at best that is annoying to get.

That said you are making me rethink the this Dex investment.  Will think about it.  Restarting won't cost me anything (Or I might bail on the replay).

Go Dex/Attunement for katanas and Slightly Better Pyromancy.

It is fun times because katanas is fun times and pyromancy is fun times.

Smash Bros 3DS:

So I am officially Smashscum now. I joined smashboards.com and now I am meticulously learning the inner workings of a freakin' fighting game. Like, stat-topic level depth except everything isn't as elegant as JRPG math due to the messiness of, you know, being a fighting game. So I am indulging my stat topic fetishism by learning frame speed data of attacks and the complex formula behind how knockback is determined and how much percent damage is needed to KO with certain moves on certain stages against characters of varying weights...

It's actually enjoyable somehow, but only because Smash Bros is a game with such a huge following that there's enough documentation on everything that I don't feel the need to do supplemental datamining on my own. It is passive stat-topic enjoyment rather than the fun that comes from datamining to make a stat topic. Though if Smash Bros was in any way DL-compatible I would stat topic it for fun...

In other news, I'm 90% complete with the Getter Board, or whatever the Achievements List is called in English. Just gotta beat the game on 9.0 one of these days. I would abuse one of these cool Equipment setups I keep reading about on the smashboards, but not only does that feel like cheating, I also can't get the RNG to drop the good stuff. >:(

Eh, it really depends on what you want to get out of the magic side. DS1 makes it a lot harder to excel at both melee and offensive casting* (DS2 you get lots more levels and can respec) so I tend to stick with one side or the other (I can't stomach using something without optimizing it because there's still plenty of meat on that bone.) If all you want it for is like buffs and support spells, then 40 DEX + some middling amount of intelligence for Great/Crystal Magic Weapon is superbly effective. For top-tier attack spells though you have less wiggle room because some call for like 40-50 INT and you'd probably want more attunement to fit them in too.

(*Of course pyromancy cheats because all you need is attunement.)

Velka's Rapier might be a thing. (I don't even know if it's any good, but it is expressly built for DEX/INT characters.)

Far Cry 4 - I don't know why I am playing this. Far Cry 3 started boring the shit out of me at the midway point and this is a lot more of that. I guess the story is a little better but I am still not invested and literally everything in the world is trying to kill you. It's kind of like this:

So if you're idling for a bit, a hawk will come in and tear your face off, or a rhino will just saunter along and wreck your shit. This makes traveling around a little annoying, and I really don't like having a vomit of objectives everywhere. The skill tree is also constrained compared to 3, but they took away skills that were actually useful like being able to move faster while crouched. I did get this for cheap but there's nothing new here and this series just isn't for me. Blood Dragon at least looks better because of the setting.

EP: Rondemion, if you don't want people to realize that you're that Rondemion, maybe you shouldn't tell them that your name is "Rondemion?" Just a suggestion.

So the first stratum boss room occupied in every other chapter by Morpheus now hosts a boss fight with Master D. "I assure you, my ability to change has been crucial to my success," and by the way you guys I'm totally not talking about being a shapeshifter. Then he joins the party and his class is "Usurper." I'm not even going to joke about him obviously being sinister anymore because at this point he's just openly trolling.

I went FAQ-diving and am relieved to see there's no special ending requirements for Rondemion's chapter. Also the final chapter unlock req is apparently all good endings (so I have to replay Thage no matter what) + full pokedex encyclopedia. I...probably can do that without replaying anything else, but we'll see. Two of the ??? entries are obviously the first stratum bosses I haven't fought and/or killed. I can only hope I encounter the couple others I have no idea about during R's chapter.

Super Mario Galaxy - I'm up to about 40 stars in this, still having fun and chugging along. So many creatively designed stages and awesome gimmicks. Swimming, sadly, is still very bad.

Super Mario Bros. 2 - I decided to replay this on a whim, mostly for Princess Peach supremacy and a general desire to suffer. I'm currently trying to beat the game as Toad, which is pretty much the same as the game having a Hard Mode.

Also played some Smash yesterday, where I was mostly pasted but won a couple of matches as Palutena and Samus. Samus has worked out better than I expected as a main in this game and I may continue to use her. The one where I won as Samus was the first time that the 'bad' players in the group got 1/2 on the 'good' players of the group. There may have been celebration.
