Discussion / Re: Anyone up for a DL podcast?

An oral history is probably more interesting than individual matches?   Also depends on if you want an ongoing or a limited run I suppose.

Sproink

After all these years thst is still the effect you have on me too bbe.

Spinda: Is fine. The gimmick is cute. The colors are fine. The drawn on look for the spirals is a bit weird but not crazy by Pokemon standards. Sure. 3/5

I wish I knew how to quit you.

53
You didn’t need me to rate it high to make that decision anyway yeah.   Only realistic competition is Bodycount because of politics in the last week and me wanting to soapbox.

54
Dreamcatcher - Sounds like anime opening.  It’s fine but don’t feel it.

Ladybaby - this is like Babymetal on the same beats as Doki Doki Morning before it felt like they had found their own unique voice and it was mostly just Happy Hardcore but Metal instead of hard dance.   But Doki Doki Morning is still a fun track so ehhhhh this relates higher than is probably fair on other tracks.

LSD (Labrinth, Sia Diplo) - a chillwave track that is just about how music is so central to life with a good use of Sia?   Yeahhhhh this is probably the pick.

An Chi Hwan - Persona 5 with less funk and more Lounge?   I couldn’t pick between this and LSD - Audio without really thinking about it.   This is smooth as fuck.

Lykke Li - some seriously Tegan And Sara ass song right here.  Solid in its third place so far, but hey I guess that being like early Babymetal isn’t such a big help.

刺猬樂隊 (The Hedgehog Band) - dammit mc I was trying to do this fast before boarding a flight.   Uuuuugh this might need to wait until after the flight to listen to stuff again.   I think this is better than An Chi Hwan and LSD.   It is the freestyle that pushes it over.

Orbital - it is like Kraftwerk with none of the restrictions they impose on themselves.   It is cool but not really rating this week.

刺猬樂隊 > An Chi Hwan = LSD > Lykke Li > Ladybaby > Orbital > Dreamcatcher

Okay I had read Alex's list before going through them and expected ti have to shuffle things around a bit but.... huh.  Some of the reasoning is slightly different (like I just have a soft spot that kind of delivery that Lady Leshurr has)

Childish Gambino > Justice > DBT Remix > Nicki Minaj > Epica > Cardinale

I would probably rate Babymetal and Florence higher, but that is both personal tastes and even if they were there I would be saying to talk about This Is America because like did you just read what Alex posted?  Specifically on the topic of Babymetal, it is a cool track to get and their first one since the tragic death of one of the band members earlier in the year.  The film clip makes me look forward to this Live Action adaptation of the Dark Souls Anime that doesn't exist.

Florence is Florence.  You know why and what her music does to me by now.

Lord Huron - Lost in Time and Space.

Beautiful.

It is probably also telling us that VC stuff just wasn’t that profitable as a whole marketting push.   The main reason MS pushes backwards compatibility this gen is because it is a unique thing on the Xboxen this gen.   It is way more about maintaining player good will than profitability and good will is something Nintendo have in spades with the Switch.

Also key points to note

Quote
“no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems.”

Under the same Banner doesn’t mean that they won’t publish old stuff using the quality emulators they already have for the Switch, it just means they aren’t doing a targeted campaign.   Presumably if someone wanted to publish a bunch of NES games they can still do so, they just will be in the global list of Switch games instead of in there own little classics section.    One would also hope that you can license those emulators or something to run them?   Depends how Nintendo want to productiise the technology.

So this is going to be trying to replicate my thoughts for the individual song as I was going through them in real time.

Sam Tsui - This is kind of okay, I could see picking it as an Avicci tribute, that would make sense, but its just kind of there.

Amber Liu - Ehhhh not seeing Alex on this one, it is pretty light and gentle but I am digging it.  I could use something pretty soft at the moment, probably going to be rated up there pretty okay.

LCMDF - This also not bad.  It is a standard delivery but I can't pin what it sounds like, so I probably won't mention it (except now I want to replicate my thought processes).  Will have to probably relisten to it and Amber Liu to pick between them.

The Night Flight Orchestra - lol nvm i see what alex is talking about.

Dierks Bentley - The intro fade out to the story bits are effective and hits the right notes that it wants to.  But its 2018, not 2002?  I thought we were done with hitting those beats in country songs.  THe real shame is that the jamming as the outro is pretty good!  Shame the rest of it is just Nashville sound country.

Hamilton - It is neat and all, which you would expect from Hamilton.  It is also incredibly polished and studio feeling?   Maybe it is that good live, maybe it is just an acoustic thing from recording in a studio that makes it feel slightly off?  I just speaks to me a bit less.

Night Flight Orchestra > Amber Liu > LCMDF > Sam Tsui > Hamilton > Dierks Bentley

Night Flight Orchestra is like exactly my jam.  I love a ton of the 70s/80s aesthetic, but I also grew up mainlining Queen's Greatest Hits in my early teens.  It is just a ton of fun.  It is easy easy easy win for me though.

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars.

Some of the skills you didn’t see much use or are class defining are baked into the class they unlock from.   Oracles have Move-MP Up innately.  It both lets those skills see some use and makes Oracle specifically an interesting carrier class for an MP intensive secondary.

Press the tool tip button on one of the screens (class change I think?) and it will tell you what is innate.   Knights have Defense Up for example and is why they have been such a pain.

Not much thought, but figured I should make sure to post.

 Dante Klein & Jantine  > Alesso x Rudy > EXO-CBX  > Banx & Ranx & EE  Yoonmirae > Anne-Marie

How has no one else like just camped out on how fucking thirsty Illumise is.  It sees what it wants and looks straight down the camera at and is like :> I will have some of that.

Illumise is here for one thing and it ain’t leaving till it has picked up the one thing it left the house for.  And it is some fuck.

So Alex brought this to my attention (I think there was something in my mail), but a few pages back I posted about a cool 486 aesthetic metal artist that had an album I dug.

https://blood-music.bandcamp.com/album/direct-memory-access

New album dropped.  Has lyrics.  It is rad as fuck.  I need to give it a few spins more to really get a taste of it, but I do like it a ton so far.

Yeah that is pretty much the exact thing I was describing.   I prefer Dark Passion Plays onwards, but I will always have a special place in my heart for early Nightwish.

Like pretty much because this will always be my aesthetic.

The worst dildo Pokemon evolves into the worst butt plug pokemon.   Good job pure electric types on fighting with Fire types for being garbage.

I guess an electric type being a butt plug os at least some kind of pun, but like Manectric’s design, it isn’t a good one.

Also someone needs to build a time machine so Electabuzz can be renamed Manectric and some bug lightning type can be Electabuzz.

Or it can be Buzz Aldrin’s campaign slogan.

Heroes of Hammerwatch - Hey if anyone is interested in a top down dungeon crawler roguelite that is pretty well polished and supports 4 player coop (can do more with console commands) this one is worth a look.  I haven't finished it yet with anyone and the difficulty scales up pretty rapidly as you descend, but it seems well constructed/polished and is still getting patches frequently.

Its about $12 at the moment and is like 100mb.  Runs on pretty much anything.  Fun little thing I have been playing the last few days and its good enough to throw out there.

Sarah Blasko - {Explain}

Sierra, this is probably another one to look up sometime if you want to check out Grefter Approved Female Singers.  What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have is a good starting point

Their stuff from that album onwards is still LESS melodramatic than when they have Tarja, but they do get more Sierra Levels Of Prog.

The last track on the newest album has this breakdown on Genius.

Nightwish’s longest song to date, “The Greatest Show On Earth” is a 24 minute progressive conceptual song broken into five distinct movements:

    I – Four Point Six
    II – Life
    III – The Toolmaker
    IV – The Understanding
    V – Sea-Worn Driftwood

The overarching theme of the song is the development of life on Earth and, hence, evolution.

The song (and the album as a whole) draws inspiration from Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, the paper which founded the idea of evolutionary biology.

The song also draws heavy influences from Richard Dawkin’s 2009 book The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution, with samples taken from the audiobook narrated by the author being used in this song.

against one of the strongest and most diverse weeks I can think of.

David Guetta and Sia - Yeah I dig this and can totally see it being the pick based on the video.  I think it sounds like I like it a bit more than Alex, but it is also up against the rest of this week so RIP probably.

Amine - Pretty sure we really dug Amine last time they came up. I also have no idea where I will rank this as of doing write ups.

Paloma Faith - This sounds and feels like a damn good Amy Winehouse impression.  It isn't perfect, but it right in my wheelhouse, I really dig this.  But it also makes me miss Amy.  Again though if it is low it isn't because "Shitty Amy Winehouse impression", it is because goddamn this week.

Le Butcherettes - YESSSSSSSSSS THIS IS MY SHIT.  This is like an amalgamation of a 90s alt rock shit that I love.   Hole/Melissa auf Der Maur style stuff which I have rambled on about liking so much for many years now.  This is proooooobably my pick?  I did some googling to check history and stuff of the band.  The first sentence is "Le Butcherettes is a Mexican garage punk band formed in 2007 in Guadalajara by Teri Gender Bender." The only words in that sentence which are not pure gold are: is, a, formed and in.

KHS - This doesn't land with me.  Like normal, it is pretty cool thing he is doing!  Its just like... hey a cool thing in a week with a bunch of stuff that has an emotional connection.

Head Swing Dolls - I am running out of words.  This is good, in a similar wheelhouse as Le Butcherettes, but I like it slightly less.  It would probably be an easy 1 fairly often though.  That fucking horn section.

Le Butcherettes > Head Swing Dolls > Amine > Paloma Faith > David Guetta and Sia > KHS.

72
Huh, I don't have much to add this week, I pretty much just agree with Alex's set.

Don't have nay particular insight either.

Veil of Obscurity > Last > Oh My Girl > The Boyz > Sam Martin > Capital Cities looks good.

I Will Be Gone In the Dark -  so my twitter feed was getting spammed about this because I follow Patton and had been avoiding letting myself pick it up just out of exposure.  Then there was excerpts posted.   It is really well written stuff  so eh I was sick on Monday so let’s get a book.  Highly recommend  it as they have done an amazing job of stitching together the loose threads of a nearly finished book about searching for a still unidentified serial murderer and rapist from the 70s-80s.  It slips in and out of documenting historical events to her recent investigations both on her own time and with former and current investigators on theirs.

I don’t normally do True Crime stuff for various reasons but this is really gentle and caring for the victims, very fair on the police investigations, very in-depth on its analysis but doesn’t wallow in gore porn.  It will spook the shit out of you but isn’t fear mongering.   A really fascinating read and a terrible shame she passed at a young age.

Esit - oh yeah and it is sappy as fuck but that doesn’t hurt it

Never underestimate our taste in dissonant sounds and appreciation for horror throwbacks.

Dreamcatcher - Steamed Alexchans But It Is K-Pop

Killah Queen - I vaguely remember her coming up last time?  It think I remember talking about it being weird me not voting for German woman rapping.  This is really damn good, like first two tracks is all killer no filler.

曾軼可 (Zeng Yike) - Grefter Songs But It Is K-Pop.  I don't know if this works quite as well as Dreamcatcher does because it is kind of rejecting the self destruction instead of just being about wallowing in it, but its pretty good.  Dreamcatcher is also just a better put together complete package.

I fucking love the costuming though.

Lin Manuel Miranda & Ben Platt - So this is a mash-up apparently?  I am really out of the pop culture bubble that these come from.  It sounds like some Disney ass tunes to me, but hey more power to people doing songs for social progress.  I kinda don't see how it ties in to the march specifically, but whatever its cool that its there.

Kelly Clarkson - On first listen "Eh this is Kelly Clarkson, I wonder if she wrote it or someone else did.  It sounds like pushing really hard on vocal stuff like she isn't really famous for".  To wikipedia!  "I Don't Think About You" is written by Sean & Andre Davidson of the production duo The Monarch, singer Jessica Ashley (professionally known as Harlœ), and Vanderbilt pianist Michael Pollack. ... Prior to finishing the track, Clarkson had asked Harlœ to pen it like a Whitney-esque ballad to showcase her range, which led to an arrangement emphasizing on her vocals.

Yep okay, so there is nothing wrong with either of those things, but part of the appeal to me of your Adelle/Florence/Lorde stuff is exactly how personal it is.  Also I really am not a fan of ballads that push vocals and oversinging.  It just ain't me.

Matty B - Hey puberty is being really kind to him and he seems to be doing pretty well for himself.  Also it is weird how less sexual this is compared to the stuff when he wasn't a teenager yet was.  Also still heeeeeeeeellllllllllllll no is this going to be in my wheel house.  I am happy for him, but this also ain't me.

You made this week really easy for me.

Dreamcatcher > Killah Queen > 曾軼可 (Zeng Yike) > Lin Manuel Miranda & Ben Platt > Kelly Clarkson > Matty B
