Music Tournament / Re: Music Tournament of DOOM 2017- Round 1, Topic 10
« on: August 13, 2017, 11:21:41 AM »
Risk of Rain- Tropic of Cancer vs Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals- Battle 2
- This is tough.  Tropic of Cancer is pretty good, but I do enjoy me some Lufia tunes and Battle 2 is one of the better tracks.
Xenosaga Der Wille Zur Macht – Margulis vs Okami- Reset ~Ending Theme~
Dark Souls 3- Dragonslayer Armor vs Super Metroid- Lower Brinstar
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne- The Tokyo Conception vs Speed of Doom (Custom Doom 2 WAD)- Getaway

Mega Man X- Storm Eagle vs Final Fantasy X- Someday the Dream Will End
Bravely Default- Wicked Flight vs Portal 2- Bombs for Throwing at You
- Definitely was surprised at how interesting Bombs for Throwing at You is.  Wicked Flight is also quite good but this is a tough opponent.
GENETOS- Origin vs Final Fantasy IX- Dark Messenger
Persona 5- Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There vs Undertale- Spear of Justice

GENETOS- Origin vs Final Fantasy IX- Dark Messenger - So this feels like a medley.  Except from what I understand, GENETOS itself is a medley, so it probably is supposed to be like htat.  Real good in any case.

Origin is played in the last stage, which has five phases.  The first three are completely time-based, so the first three phases of the music follows them perfectly.  The fourth phase is a miniboss, so it can have variable time, so that's why the last phase of the track loops.  The fifth phase is a different song ("Answer").

I found a random gameplay video on youtube if anyone's interested in seeing how it works in context: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivgvL8F91G0

Hollow Knight- City of Tears vs Super Mario Galaxy- Bowser Battle Theme
Ducktales Remastered- Moon Theme vs Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire- Battle! Rayquaza

Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel- EXEC_METEMPSYCHOSIS/. vs Drakengard 3- This Silence is Mine
Super Metroid- Theme of Samus Aran, Galactic Warrior vs Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy- God In Fire
Kirby’s Dream Land- Bubbly Clouds vs Hellcore 2.0 (Custom Doom 2 WAD)- Industry
No More Heroes 2- Shoegazer Watched the Stars vs Wild ARMs 5- At the Frozen Depths of the Heart

Bloodborne- Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower vs Soushu Senshinkan Gakuen Hachimyoujin- YEHOSHUA
Final Fantasy VI- What? vs Xenoblade Chronicles- Snowy Valak Mountain
Dark Souls- Ornstein and Smough vs Super Mario RPG- The Road is Full of Dangers
Final Fantasy VII- Don of the Slums vs Star Control 2: Yehat Theme

29
Halo Wars- Insignificantia (All Sloppy- No Joe) vs Spyro: Year of the Dragon- Sunny Villa
SaGa Frontier- Melody of Time vs Ori and the Blind Forest- Restoring the Light, Facing the Dark
Project Diva Future Tone- Step Forward vs Chrono Cross- Gale
Tales of Graces- To a Sea of Dancing Snow vs Lufia and the Fortress of Doom- The Sorrow of Parting

Solatorobo: Red the Hunter- Depend on Me vs White Knight Chronicles 2 - The Battlefield Flower (Violin Version)
- About the only good thing to come out of WKC2.
Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea- Scorpio vs Shadow of the Colossus- Revived Power
Project Diva F 2nd- Break It Break It vs  Pokémon X/Y- Snowbelle City
Adventures of Mana- Battle II vs Wild ARMs 3- Fate Breaker
- I already liked the GB version and AoM arranges it well.

30
Suikogaiden vol. 1: Swordsman of Harmonia- Currents vs Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea- Rusty Sky (Opening Ver.)
- Pretty easy choice.
Kajiri Kamui Kagura- Magatsu Chisomebara vs BlazBlue Continuum Shift- Condemnation Wings
- Haven't heard this before, it's quite good!
Enchanted Arms- Sayaka Battle vs BlazBlue Central Fiction- YOMOTSUHIRASAKA
- Eh, not really feeling either of these right now.
Xenogears- Shattering the Dream Egg vs Persona 5- Rivers in the Desert
- I really don't know how I feel about Rivers in the Desert...

Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk- Guidance vs Xenoblade Chronicles- The One Who Gets in Our Way
- These are both quite good, but in general I'll take a really good mood piece over a rocking rock piece.
Final Fantasy VI- Searching for Friends vs Final Fantasy VI- Terra
- Oddly enough, my favorite arrangement out of these two is of Searching For Friends.  But as for the original tracks, Terra wins out.
Final Fantasy VIII- Legendary Beast vs Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth- Footsteps of Time
- Haven't heard it before, but Footsteps of Time is really good.
Xenoblade Chronicles- Engage the Enemy vs Okami- Ryoshima Coast
- I was gonna vote for Engage the Enemy but then Ryoshima Coast got gud.

31
Imperishable Night- Love-Colored Master Spark vs .hack//Link- Carl’s Theme
- Hmm, this one is actually pretty close...
Final Fantasy XV- Veiled in Black vs Terranigma- The Way Home
- Also pretty close.
True Love- Ending Theme vs Dark Souls 2- Majula
- Solid pool continues...
Xenosaga Jenseits von Gut und Bose- Fatal Fight vs Berserk Millennium Empire Arc: Chapter of the Holy Demon War- Sign
- Still good.

Suikoden- Island Fortress vs Chrono Trigger- Battle with Magus
- These are both good too.
Suikoden II- The Chase vs Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire- Battle! Zinnia
- It keeps happening.
NieR- The Wretched Automatons vs Xenoblade Chronicles- You Will Know Our Names
- Probably the least close match so far but only because The Wretched Automatons is genius.  You Will Know Our Names is also really good and would probably win against most other stuff here.
Final Fantasy X-2 – 1000 Words Orchestral vs Disgaea: Hour of Darkness- Planet X
- I actually like both of these too...

Got Vlad III and Siegfried.

Friend code: 890,415,697

33
Darius Force- Super Nova ~Lame~ vs Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel- Exec_Flip_Arphage
Crash Bandicoot 2: Rock It vs Chrono Trigger- Singing Mountain
Deemo- The Witch’s Invitation vs Demon’s Souls- Tower Knight
Raiden V- Crystal of Abyss vs Front Mission 4- Hostiles

Koudelka- Waterfall vs Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation- Liberation of Gracemaria
Super Smash Bros.- Pop Land Stage vs Shovel Knight- Strike the Earth! Plans of Passage
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn- Penitus vs Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War- The Unsung War
Dies irae ~Interview of Kaziklu Bey~- Methuselah vs Bayonetta- Red & Black

34
Dragon Quest III- Adventure vs Mega Man 2- Wily Stage 1+2
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair- Ryukotsuki vs Splatoon- Calamari Inkantation
Calamari Inkantation was a pleasant surprise.
Kidou Senshi Gundam F-91- Act 12 vs Bastion- The Mancer’s Dilemma
Wild ARMs XF- Intrude Upon Happiness, Plunder the Future vs Pokémon Sun/Moon- Guardian Deities Battle

Vanguard Bandits- Dingdingding vs Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies- Megalith ~Agnus Dei~
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean- Survival From the Force vs Bloodborne- Gehrman, the First Hunter
Lunar Silver Star Story Complete- Go Go Go vs Tales of Xillia 2- If It’s For You ~Song 4 u~
Final Fantasy VII- Anxious Heart vs Kingdom Hearts- It Began with a Letter

35
Mega Man 2- Metal Man vs Ys: The Oath in Felghana- The Strongest Foe
Pretty tough.  Going with the one with more interesting instrumentation.
Final Fantasy Tactics- Antipyretic vs NieR- Shadowlord
For the people who haven't played Nier (play Nier), the first "half" of the OST track is played during talky non-combat parts and the second "half" is for the combat parts.  Anyway, this match being so early is unfortunate, since these are both great, but Shadowlord is the definite winner.
Super Smash Bros. Melee- Menu 2 vs Rosenkreuzstilette- Luftfest Sleipnir
The menu music is okay but not really that special.  Luftfest Sleipnir is way too noisy but it has a good melody in there.  That's enough to take this.
Within a Deep Forest- Adventures vs Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria- How Wicked Ruler
I guess.

Love Live School Idol Festival- Watashitachi wa Mirai no Hana vs Fire Emblem Fates- The End of All
This is the most difficult match yet.  Both of these are great.
The Legend of Zelda- Overworld vs Secret of Evermore- Hall of Collosia, Chamber 1
I'm not entirely sure what my opinion on the Evermore track is yet, but it seems good.
Atelier Violet- Izareya vs Legend of Legacy- Twin Dimension Battle
Izareya is great.  The way the instruments and vocals fit together is fantastic.  Twin Dimensional Battle is also quite good.  It starts off a bit slow but the buildup is so worth it.  Solid instrumentation too.
Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals- For the Savior vs Golden Sun: The Lost Age- The Doom Dragon
Not gonna lie, I've got a bit of bias towards Lufia music.

Tournaments / Re: Music Tournament of DOOM 2017- Round 1, Topic 1
« on: June 10, 2017, 10:54:03 AM »
Heroes of the Storm- Dva Music vs Dark Souls- Nameless Song
These are both sorta okay.  Nameless Song plays to my biases a bit more.
BlazBlue Central Fiction- HAKAISHIN vs Persona 5- Life Will Change
Didn't know Life Will Change had a vocal version because I'm not that far into the game (spoilers!!).  This version is solid too.  HAKAISHIN is good, but doesn't win out here.
Granblue Fantasy- New World Order vs Tokyo 7th Sisters- Twilight
I like both of these, but I put New World Order on my list for a good reason.
XCom 2- Spark Operational vs Chrono Trigger- Corridors of Time
Spark Operational is pretty good but this is an unfortunate match.

Final Fantasy XV- Reel Rumble vs God Hand- God Hand
God Hand is amusing, but Reel Rumble is actual musical genius.  It constantly being unpredictable and keeping you off balance has got to be intentional.  Perfectly fits the mood of trying to catch that damn fish.
Undertale- Death by Glamour vs Chrono Cross- Fate, God of Destiny
The beginning of Death by Glamour is extremely good.  I really love the layering going on there.  The rest of the song's solid too but not anything special.  Fate, God of Destiny... I actually don't remember this song.  It's pretty good though!  Not good enough, sadly.
Tokyo 7th Sisters- Hello… my friend vs Dark Souls 2- Old Dragonslayer
Having trouble forming an opinion on either of these.  Might take another listen later but think I'm going with this for now.
Trails of Cold Steel II- Phantasmal Blaze vs Spyro: Year of the Dragon- Harbor Speedway
I was pleasantly surprised by both of these, but much more so by Phantasmal Blaze.

I hope the top 15 don't need to be ordered...  Also I don't remember what's been in before so if any of these have let me know.

1) Reel Rumble - Final Fantasy XV

Intense fishing!!

2) Buried City - Wild Arms 4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unE6_4PwZpA

3) Izareya - Atelier Violet

4) Last Surprise - Persona 5

5) Evolution Era - Deemo

6) Agame yo, Ware wa Shinki - Atelier Escha & Logy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3hXhQYIycM

7) EXEC_METEMPSYCHOSIS/. - Ar tonelico III
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPcXWAnhn2I

8) CIEL_N_PROTECTA - Ar no Surge
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mObp9qfDDuE

9) Origin - GENETOS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTCf62Frf5s
GENETOS is a shmup where you play through the history of shmups.  You start out with a ship that can only move in one dimension and fight against space invaders.  As you progress, your ship evolves (there are multiple evolution paths), unlocking new features and mechanics, such as bombs and subweapons.  The enemies and environments also start to look more modern as you go.
This song is for the first half of the final stage, which goes through phases of evolution of a planet.  The first three phases are completely timed and the music reflects that.  The fourth stage is not timed (and can take a long time if you don't know what you're doing), so the music will loop until you finish.

10) Penitus - Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jx3QPiTcXa4
The music for the last dungeon in the A Realm Reborn 2.0 storyline.

11) Locus - Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cKy5Qk0QMM
Heavensward had a lot of good music, but this was the most "unique" in my opinion.  This is played during most of the Alexander raid battles throughout Heavensward.

12) Metal - Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhDvQIqEkuI
Another song from the Alexander raid.  This is for the final boss of Gordias (Manipulator) as well as the first half of the final fight of Midas (the second part is Brute Justice which was nominated earlier in this topic).
The goblins are the ones summoning Alexander, and they have a fairly simplistic way of speaking.  They use a lot of onomatopoeia and simple compound words.  The lyrics do a good job of keeping that style.

13)
New World Order - from Granblue Fantasy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKcXCvjcDBU

14) Just a Coffin and an Automaton - Atelier Ayesha
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xnTRq_PC7k

15)
Steins;Gate - Gate of Steiner - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVQj-yv91m4
Really good game (and anime) kind of like a reverse Terminator series with less action and more science.  A few decades in the future, a time machine that can send weak electronic signals (short emails or text messages) into the past is invented.  A covert time war ensues between the totalitarian dystopia of the future and the resistance leaders, who, in the present, are a motley group of deadbeat college students.  This is the "main theme" that plays rarely, when some particularly big event or emotional revelation happens.  Great track, highly remixable.

Discussion / Web Host Situation
« on: May 17, 2017, 04:35:07 AM »
As some people have noticed, the forums have been acting screwy lately.  This is an issue with our host, and while we have lessened the effect, it has not gone away completely.

As such, there is a real argument to migrate to another host.  What are people's opinions on this?  And does anyone have suggestions on good hosts?

RPGDL Discussion / Re: Limit Scaling Views
« on: April 26, 2015, 12:45:15 AM »
I tend to stick with half limit gauges/values IF they can be stored between battles.  If they can't, they start at whatever they start at in-game (usually 0).  For TRPGs that have a gauge that starts at 0, they still start at 0.  Sorry, but fights start at turn 1 in the DL.  If there was some special reason that you couldn't do anything turn 1 (like maybe the game doesn't let you attack on turn 1 because that's just part of the battle system), then I would consider it, but not being in range isn't good enough for me.

As for averages, these days I've been using halfway between a three turn average that uses only skills usable 3+ times and a three turn average that burns everything possible.  I considered some scaling average that went beyond three turns (and weighted later turn damages lower than shorter turn damages), but I never fleshed it out.  I really don't like how arbitrary that 3 turn cutoff is.

For limits, that means anything that can come out in three turns is factored in and not if it takes longer than that.  Also, only limits that accumulate SOLELY through that person's actions are considered.  FF7 and FF8 limits require being attacked, so they are not put into averages.

For Valkyrie Profile, I don't allow energy storing.  PWS can happen when PCs face bosses under my views anyway, so they're still relevant.  I don't think I factor them into averages since they're so conditional (except for people who can do them alone).

Pre-battle preparation came up.  At the moment, I don't allow it, but the consequences of doing so are interesting.  There's also the difference of whether or not the preparation is "unique".  Celes casting Vanish is pretty unique, but FF8 characters starting at low HP is not.  Should this matter?  I'm unsure.
