My favourite part is noting how little gameplay there is in this and how much he seems to be enjoying it (and how much I still eye roll at this being touted as competition in writing quality to Torment.  "Dropping a warship on me is cheating. Take it back!"  Really?  I will take me "What can change the nature of a man?" to the bank in comparison to that).

Citan for real main character hype goes here.

Planescape gets hype for writing, Xenogears for...plotting, I guess? Direction? Definitely not the actual lines, with the occasional exception for something like Grahf's speech.

I would say something like "ambition."  It's got a lot of ideas and it wants to do so much with all of them, even if we can look at it now and say "yeah there's no way you would have put everything you wanted into this game regardless of how much time you were given."  The end result puts so much stuff out there that there's probably at least one thing in it you're going to like.   Like, as much as I think the main plot is pretty much nonsense I still really enjoy seeing the way Ramsus completely degenerates.

That would be the best summation I've heard of XG (And a lot of Square's early to mid PSX titles). I don't care for the gameplay much and roll my eyes at the plot pretty often, but it's hard to not respect the effort and scope of Xenogears.

Indeed.  A lot of games degenerate into mumbo-jumbo because they run out of ideas and don't have anything to put in the latter part of the game.  See: the last 1/3 of almost every Tales game.  Xenogears is filled with mumbo-jumbo because there's so much they want to do that it gets jumbled as they try to squeeze it all in.  Game swings for the fences every time, and connects on some tough pitches.  And also strikes out a fair amount!

I kind of admire how they refused to change their planned story when they were told they had to get their shit finished and out the door by a specific date.  I don't think that was the smart thing to do by any means, but it was very bold of them.

ps. If you actually want me to play Torment, saying "the story-heavy games you enjoy suck" is about the worst way you could possibly go about doing it.

I have kind of given up on it to be honest >_> and I know for a fact that you will hate the gameplay there, so it goes.  It is less that XG is bad and that they are completely different (noting that this is like... before we had things like Shadow Hearts 2 even out) .  Most people that used to put them head to head missed that and did actually tend to hype things like Id and Grahf for being the greatest ideas instead of stuff like really delivering on their Make Room! Make Room! references, villains that plot behind 2 or 3 layers of puppets that the game lets the player in on instead of being Zenormous.  To this day I still love that the party heals themselves by rubbing reprocessed human bodies on their wounds and continue to do so even after the reveal.  I only poke and prod about it because I like reading your views on things and a man should work towards his dreams even if they are futile.  Grahf is in fact not the bestest and is a charismatic curtain that both Miang and Krelian hide behind at various points.  Id is even less amazing and is even more a force of nature than Grahf.  They are fine in game, but when you are going to be talking about subtle character presentation (because you are comparing to Torment...) you could focus on Miang and Citan and maybe stay away from things like Jesse Cannon.  Back in the day people repped the game entirely the wrong way (Like I apparently do for Torment now!).

Edit - None of this is directed at Elf's current recap!  It is fun and covers the points fine.  Only point of Elf's that I mean to note is really how little you mention the gameplay, both as a mix of how sparse it can be at times.  Also amusing that the stuff you feel the need to comment on the most is Gear battles.

I can't even be mad at you for getting bored with Torment and stopping playing Snowfire.  It is a hard game to play these days and it isn't the story that does it.  The gameplay is significantly worse than XGs that is for sure, which is really a thing.

"What can change the nature of a man?" isn't so much a line as a mission statement, a theme and the line delivered at the climax of the plot.  It has a lot going on with it in game.

Blackwell Convergence & Blackwell Deception - played through both

Both fairly good. Not sure which I prefer, but I'm reasonably certain that Blackwell Unbound is better than both.

I'm not sure why Deception doesn't stand out as clear best of the series? It blasts the rest of the out of the water ghost-count-wise, for all that a couple of them hardly count (not like there aren't ghosts which hardly count in the previous instalments though), and it has a portion of the game where you have multiple things you can be doing like Unbound does... it does have mediocre portraits in comparison to Convergence, but that's not much of a reason (and I think they're supposed to have been replaced late last year anyway, which I found out about too late to update my install). I didn't have a problem with the ending like some people seem to have had either.

I should be all set for when Epiphany comes out.

It's not like they ever really gave much of a shit about the gameplay to begin with. I have never seen anything that made me doubt the XG team was trying to tell a story, not make a complete, well-rounded game.

I had a manual save just before leaving the city, fortunately, but still, pretty goddamn annoying. That is some weirdness right there. (Aren't those areas normally only accessible in like chapter six anyway? Maybe the game got confused.)

There's been at least one 100% gameplay-free hour in these recaps! That's probably the best thing I can say about XG gameplay. The main reason I have mentioned gear more than on-foot is because there's been hardly any on-foot gameplay so far, with the only thing so far large enough to really be called a dungeon being a locale for gear fights (Stalactite Cave).

The other reason the recaps have focused more on plot (and will continue to do so) is because that is why I am replaying the game. I already know what I think about the gameplay (it is bad) but watching XG's story unwrap itself and taking a look at what I think works and what doesn't is interesting to me (and hopefully others enjoy the ride too).

If you still have a file in that area that is furthest along try deleting your Temp folder.  It is common with that kind of error in IE games that it is a corrupted map file or something storing where you dropped shit that it stores in Temp.  You won't lose anything that drops from the ground, my shitty understanding is that Temp is only used to cache area information for quicker reference when loading areas (so when you first go to an area that is why it takes a little longer to load).

Grefter: nope, that didn't do it. In fact, when I tab over any destination on the world map to check the travel time, what it actually says for everything but those three zones is "Destination unreachable." Crazy stuff. Oh well, have to do some random stronghold stuff again I think, nothing major.
