Wine? Wine. Really OK? When did you become so fucking boring?

It used to be coke and santorum off your roommate's ass.

Also fuck off 2016, this year will be better.

So. I hope the things od 2017 brings back the culture of the 80s. I'm talking a lot of synth, big hair and delirium.

I apparently slept through a wild party that featured a 22 year old girl kissing my roommate's 60~ish year old dad. Yeah I was better off with the rest. I need to stop playing EU4, that is such a time waster.

Would prefer less Trump as well. Also, stop tarnishing the good title of "Overlord".

New Years Eve Eve was spent partying in the city I live, New Years Eve saw me partying with a bunch of guys I barely knew in Osaka, New Years Day was spent mostly sleeping on trains, New Years Day Aftermath was an impromptu house party in my own home, and the day after that was FFXV marathon. So I guess I'm back to business as usual.

Went home to Florida for Christmas and that was pretty terrible. I never want to go there again if I can help it. So much hate being constantly spewed in that house.

Damn straight there was an epidural. I had to be induced. We got into the hospital Saturday at 6pm, Juniper was born Tuesday at 4:29pm, and we got home Thursday at 12:45pm. The only way to make a hospital stay of that length tolerable - no matter why you're there - is copious amounts of drugs.

Baby pics here. (http://imgur.com/a/ZUQ7i) Not too many because I'm trying to minimize how much presence she gets on the internet in general. But some.

Now I'm going to pass out again.

I can really empathize with that feeling of not being able to accept the finality of death of someone you were once close to. It's especially difficult when you haven't seen the person in a long time... like say because you moved halfway around the globe and left everything else you'd ever known back home...There's this sense of having already lost them before due to the distance, and trying to adjust your mental framing of that from 'far away' to 'never again' is difficult both because the framing is so similar and because there's no reason to want the new framing.

OK's wedding, surprisingly enough, did not coincide with a geopolitical crisis.

Equally surprisingly, Shale's kinda did. Or, I guess, Shale is directly affected by a geopolitical crisis, and he is married. I'll take points for the terrible segue though.

that plus the baby thing is kinda new (sorry cap'n and gate but insert crass joke here)

You think that's weird?   Enjoy the next 18mknths or so where people (like me) track time between contact based on expected development.  It is like pregnancy all over again but involves getting excited over a small human doing tricks.

There's always been the occasional raccoon or skunk wandering into the neighborhood from the woodland a few blocks away, but over the last couple of weeks the street's been stink city, with skunkfumes striking hard and often.  Today we discovered why.

The neighbors tracked the smell to the enclosed space under their new deck, where they found two adult skunks and a bunch of little chirping skunk babies.  And suffered the predictable results.

So.  Manual removal is, uh, tricky, and the neighbor's house is already pretty much uninhabitable, they headed out to stay somewhere else.  No biggie, though, just call Animal Control to take care of it, right?

Ha ha ha!  Animal Control is not servicing non-emergency situations, and skunks don't qualify unless we suspect they're diseased, which they said no to because they have healthy babies.

Why is Animal Control only working barebones emergencies?  Because Travis County government services are currently defunded, thanks to the Governor and Legislature's feuding with Sheriff Hernandez over Trump's immigration detainer nonsense.  See the politics thread for more information.

And that's how Rick Perry stinkbombed my neighborhood and evicted my immigrant neighbors.

It's come to my attention that my employment is now a time-limited engagement. While it would probably be very easy to find continued employment doing the same damn thing with the new contractor when the handover rolls around in the fall, that would require continuing to exist in northern Virginia.

I'd like to move and this seems like an apt time (always assuming I can find employment someplace palatable that isn't the goddamn capital wasteland). I've always lived around here and I think 95% of that is just inertia. I don't actually feel attached to the area, so it feels due to finally look at alternatives.

I mean, I do have some preferences I'm thinking about, but I figured I'd also see whether anyone felt inclined to pitch their particular corner of planet Earth as an attractive haven for singular organisms. I might want to take some stray weekends in the near future to scout out places I've never been (for example: anything west of Chicago).

I would actually recommend Albuquerque. Doesn't tend to see hideous extremes for weather, really spacious (aka: driving is sane), cost of living is reasonable, it's incredibly gorgeous and there's some really cool stuff within the vicinity like Acoma Sky City. If I lived somewhere else, it would be my number 1 choice.

Definitely avoid the Bay Area. I love it here but if you aren't already here, don't come and risk getting attached. You'll find yourself selling your soul in traffic and rent because you are too wimpy to handle real weather anymore and everything just feels so convenient and now you have friends here and...

If I were moving (and I'm thinking about it), it'd be other part of the PNW like Seattle or Portland, pending jobs, or Austin. More attractive cost of living + similarity to the Bay Area = win.

I'll pitch three:

Boston, Massachusetts: It's pretty dope, an easy place to meet intellectuals and gamers, an okay place to afford rooms for rent but not homes, a great location other places with a Chinatown/Megabus trip, amazing libraries and museums and some really awesome funky local band musicians (listen to any Tune Yards recently?). But if your main interest is the cost of living as an adult on a single income in a place elders of your stature could have in their economy, Boston is not the place.

Austin, TX: Downtown area is the size of a fleck, but there's a lot of outdoor activities, live music everywhere, funky foodie developments, really interesting people who abuse the Keep Austin Weird slogan in a way that it is easy to socialize, great weather, gorgeous skies, gorgeous camping grounds, fresh water fucking pools everywhere. But if your main interest is the cost of living as an adult on a single income in a place elders of your stature could have in their economy, Austin is absolutely not the place. It is the #1 most expensive city in the South, it's experiencing intense gentrification at the moment, it's not pedestrian friendly, biking is okay but still noticeably deadly, it has way too many fucking conferences and events that seem to happen every week and roads on a poorly-designed road system get shutdown and fucks up locals lives, it's a blue place in a sea of red and unless you're working with some relocated silicon valley business you'll be paying more for less material quality. But Ranhat also lives there and that's great.

Atlanta, GA: A decent-sized city that's populated more in its metroarea, tons of different cuisines to choose from, perhaps too many activities going on to where it may seem like nothing is happening since folk are so dispersed, okay museums but great galleries, located within 5-6 hours of some pretty awesome cities in the south, great meat dishes, a confluence of colleges and recent influx of northerns that really mitigates Georgians "This is Trumpland!" signs, lots of affordable and expensive music events, lots of places to go that aren't packed so you can have a good amount of privacy. But if your main interest is the cost of living as an adult on a single income in a place elders of your stature could have in their economy, Atlanta is tolerable. You can still rent your own place in the city for what you would a room in a place like Austin or Boston, but a good chunk of money will leave your pockets if you commute by car everyday on the insane 6-lane highways around a 2 mile Grady curve that takes 30 minutes to pass. With planning though, your commuting life is gravy and sometimes lumpy gravy. I don't have a car, but grew up here since I was 11, and if public transit is a thing you're okay with, MARTA works.

Out of my list:
Place with the best coffee: Boston
Place with the best scenery: Austin
Place with the best apartments: Atlanta
Place with a visible and nice 30s+ community of professionals: Boston, Atlanta
Place where, were I single, I could date without misery: Atlanta/Austin
Place where, were I in a partnership and with child, I could afford vacations without thinking: Atlanta
Place where, were I adventurous, I could see and do a lot without repetition: Boston
Place with the best sports teams: ATLANTA UNITED ATLANTA UNITED, WE HAVE A NEW SOCCER TEAM AND THEY'RE ACTUALLY OK
Place where, were I to move there, I wouldn't have to relocate because of spiking housing costs: outer parts of Boston, Atlanta

Gotta stand up for Boston here: it is great for sports. TD Garden is a great place to take in games, Celtics are consistently worth watching, and contra national media, Boston-area sports fans are not reprobates.

Depends on what you do explicitly.  My area is Western PA-ish.  I love Pittsburgh - relatively cheap all things considered (depending on where you live), jobs won't be hard to find (again, depending on your background).  Weather is much like DC.  Lots of art, people are non-assholes.  Overall very solid area.  Traffic is much better than DC, but can still be bad.  Also, if you like sports, the Stillers, Penguins, and Pirates are all very popular.  Locally, Pitt, if you're big into basketball.  Not a huge sports guy myself, but Pittsburgh's a good place for that.

The place I work is Morgantown WV.  Very cheap to live there (decent apartments are 350$/month - $1000/month gets you a very nice condo or townhouse), close enough to the city (1.5 hours from Pittsburgh), very much a growing college town.  One of the fastest growing economies in the country, actually, and tons of healthcare jobs particularly.  People don't know how to drive (probably not much different than DC...), and they aren't as nice as Pittsburgh, but still overall good.

Austin has a lot of drawbacks. If one wouldn't come to LA due to traffic, I have trouble seeing Austin as a viable alternate (hideously bad urban design and road design, major freeway chokepoints across rivers that split major parts of the cities and as Dunie noted in a way, compliance with traffic laws (especially either red lights or stop signs- can't remember which) is notoriously poor). Its weather in the summer can often get pretty miserable (Virginia is humid but at least gets rain during the summers? Austin has pretty bad humidity even during drought).

Sister's dad passed away. Mum's dad died this year, and now my sister's dad. They've both lost a parent, one of the two most important people in their lives, and I've lost a grandfather, and both my father figures. My sister's dad and our mum were divorced but still on civil terms, and I also kept in touch, he was good to me. I think he also retained a soft spot for my mother so at least he was able to have the woman he had loved and his daughter by his side at the end although unfortunately I don't think he ever woke up since he was taken into hospital.

COPD again though currently it is unclear whether it was that or the infection which finished him off. Basically he'd been unwell the last week or so with a really bad infection, the other week he left the dog out all night and told my sister that it was the boys that did it (there were no boys), she went over to stay with him and he burst into her room at night shouting and saying the boys were making a noise and she was to sort them out. He had already been to see the doctor, but had got a wait and see response but once that happened with those two episodes my mum told my sister to get in touch with emergency services, and the doctor that seen him then gave antibiotics but also said her dad was to see her own doctor again, unfortunately the next time he saw his own doctor, the doctor apparently didn't really do anything again, sister also called them out on not reading her dad's notes from the other doctor, I don't even know if he was prescribed any more antibiotics, again it was more of a wait and see thing, he was still unwell this week .. I wanted to go see him but sister said he was still unwell ... I wanted to go this weekend anyway

Sister showed up at my door at ten am yesterday morning very upset saying her dad had been taken into hospital and she thought he was dying and she needed someone to look after the dog. The hospital had told her that the infection had gone on too long and there was nothing they could really do, it wasn't responding to treatment, so it was just a waiting game. Spent the day looking after the animals, feeding and tioleting (dog, and my cat) while waiting for news. Mum messaged me early evening saying Jim had gotten worse and she was staying the night at hospital with sister. I asked if I could come over but mum said she didn't think he would wake up and they didn't know for sure yet what was going to happen. Unfortunately received another message later at night saying he had passed away at around ten pm. After sister and mum had left the hospital that night they came to pick the dog up so sister could have him with her as comfort at night.

I am devastated for my sister, all I can do is be there for her in any way she needs.

Thanks super.

Funeral is on Monday.

The man quite frankly had had enough I think. After his stroke last year, and nearly losing his foot, and having toes amputated, and being in hospital again in January to have a bone which was sticking out, and the fact they had to revive him when he had those major operations, and his mobility being severely reduced from what it used to be, having to use a scooter to get around, and the CoPD on top of all that ... yeah. I guess he like my granddad decided to tell 2017 where it could stick it.

I feel like I'm perpetually interviewing for new jobs.

But, well, here we are again. Several companies in my immediate area and one big one up in Seattle, which would obviously necessitate moving.

So as usual DLCon depends on that. But it also depends on the new kidthing I've got.

Said kidthing is doing pretty well at daycare. My wallet, on the other hand, is definitely not. For what we're paying, we could rent her her own apartment. I hear that the government frowns upon leaving babies unattended, though, so we've decided to stick with the daycare for now.

I'm still not a baby person but every time she does something totally mundane I go all \o/ yay you! For example, the first best milestone was that she could look at me. Now it's that she can sit up assisted. I swear, if those were my level of standards in any other part of my life, everything would fall apart. But kidthing gets a pass. For now.

Those of you who were at DLC4, this may be upsetting to hear but...

Dukie: April 10th 2004 - May 4th 2017

I thought I was prepared for this moment since we saw it coming and when my brother told me he was on his last legs, I tried to mentally prepare myself, but walking into the house and seeing him lie there, in his usual pose, only motionless without breath...I couldn't help but tear up.  I'm still basically crying over it as we speak.

He was the second dog we owned, but first one I had to go through with seeing actually go (the first one was also old when we lost him, but he walked off the porch, uncharacteristically and we never saw him again; we believe he went off to die.  His story is something else, but won't get into that.  This happened about 9 months before we got Dukie), and I really just can't get over it.

You were an amazing dog and I will never forget you.  Brought so much joy and love to our family, and it's hard to imagine that I will never see you again.  You were more than just a pet, but actually were a part of our family.  You are irreplaceable, and I can only hope you are now in a better place.  Rest in Peace, my friend.

This is the first I've heard of all the other events, so you all have my sympathies.

~~~
It may surprise you, El-Cid, but I'd honestly say that Michigan, In the right places is a nice place to live. You pretty much want to avoid:
1)The rural areas
2)The dense urban areas
And you're gold. I've bitched a lot about my state in the past at various times, but remember I used to live in the Rural bits, where the closest not-rural bit was Port Huron. The cities people tend to remember exist in Michigan are Detroit and Flint, and while living anywhere in Flint is just about the dumbest or unluckiest thing you can do, the sub-urban areas surrounding Detroit are decent.
Where my state really shines, though, is the middle sized cities, and I've personally lived in two of them for extended periods of time. I really like my current city of East Lansing (Not to be confused with Lansing, which is also pretty OK, honestly). You have a very reliable bus service with unlimited rides for 35 dollars on a monthly pass. There's rapid growth going on, I'm watching several apartments, some condos, and what I think are two hotels going up from within walking distance of my house. It is a major college town. I am not mentally well. If I have major social problems, that is not a failing of my home state, it is a severe deficiency within myself. I see more mind-splittingly gorgeous young women on my daily commute to work every day than the poor bastard version of me that grew up Rural thought he'd ever see in a lifetime. This is only a slight hyperbole.
Kalamazoo housed me for my college years and it is a hip place. I was pretty much always able to find (good!) live bands if I wanted to go out. There are bars that cater to the college students, and somehow, the most "Collegey" of them all manage to stay to those, while there are a ton of other places where there would be single people of less "Dumbass kid" age hanging out. If you can't find something to do walking around downtown Kalamazoo at night, any given night, you're fucking bent. I managed to have a decent time most nights and I might be the most socially inept person I personally know. If you decide to NOT be a singular organism, kids that go to high school in the Kalamazoo Public School system get 4 years (or 130 credits) of college free tuition and mandatory fees.
I've never lived there, but Grand Rapids seems to be on every "Best cities to live in the US" list I've seen over the last several years. It's definitely a pretty city.
I can't put the best commentary on the Saginaw Area, honestly, because my semester at SVSU was an enormous, personal mistake. I DO know that Midland, Saginaw, and Bay City are all right next to each other and may as well be the same place.
The worst part about living in Michigan is the weather. Weather here is insane mirror-world weather, where it can jump from 25 degrees up to 80+ in under a week.
The flipside of the weather is the climate. Michigan is probably the safest place in North America. I can't say that as a for sure, 100% true thing, but i'd honestly be willing to make a small prop bet on it. Very rarely, we might get a tornado that actually hits something and does damage. Other than that, you have no natural disasters. The lakes just insulate the state from so much. About the worst possible weather is a really bad snow, and, all that lake generally makes the worst of it pile up on either side of us without actually hitting us too bad. The North East gets way more major snowstorms. Minnesota and Wisconsin will get hammered. The rest of the midwest will have way more, way more devastating tornadoes. The west coast has Earthquakes and Landslides, the Southwest has draughts and fires, and even the extremely placid Pacific Northwest still is within blastin' range of an active volcano. Afraid of climate change accelerating? I'm not. My state is goddamn fine. Sorry about your guys' water scarcity, brah. (or being consumed BY water, just not the potable kind)
Cost of living in the state is hilariously low. I'm annoyed I have the financial problems I currently do, but I have a slowly growing bank account on a <15 dollar an hour job, and I own my own house. If I didn't get screwed out of my unemployment check a few years ago, and I didn't follow that up with an uninsured trip to the Emergency room and then follow THAT up with a surgery that took a month to recover from where I had to have daily nursing care, I would be in extremely comfortable financial shape. It's amazing the difference between "Broke" and "Able to consider major life purchases" in this country. I think Michigan, a living wage is considered about 10 bucks? Slightly more?
It is like the Session ID in your cookie matches the one you used before the maintenance or something.  Clearing your cache will replace the cookie and you should be fine.  Pretty sure any time you actually go somewhere with personal stuff it will fail verification of your session ID and boot you out.
I could also be completely wrong on all fronts.
I hate life these days. Seriously. Work is trying to push me out, and none of my interviews have worked out, and I'm stressed and unhappy and my entire day is taken except for maybe an hour or two some evenings where I get some Persona time in. So it looks like I haven't even posted in this topic?  Wow.
So when I started my current job late last year, they were just getting off a hiring freeze of some sort.  So they spent a few weeks shuffling people who'd been there in part-time positions officially into their full time ones, and I slid over into a part time position.
For about a month, before one of the full time people who'd moved over also quit.  Since I'd already been picking up all her off days in addition to the off-days my position was mostly there to cover, it was a natural enough move.  Also it was the morning cook shift, which literally nobody else wanted (because I was bottom seniority, so if anyone else had wanted it they'd have bumped me out of consideration).  Understandably, because it's twice as much work as the afternoon cook shift and runs from 5:30-2.
Now, after a month or of that, we got a couple more part timers.  The basic shift structure in the kitchen is one cook and two aides for two shifts, one breakfast/lunch and one dinner.  Then each of those six positions has a part time counterpart.  After all the hiring, we had all but one part time shift covered... naturally the one position that wasn't filled was the one nobody wanted, so often times I would pick up one of my days off in the two-week schedule just to save myself some hassle and know when it was.
Somehow the whole department acts like teenagers or something.  Calloffs are distressingly common, like I'm pretty sure people intentionally use up exactly enough call in as they can get away with without being disciplined, wait a few months for the slate to clean, then do it again.  Being woken up because they were hoping I could cover got so common I started just turning off my phone on nights I had off, because I just don't think I can physically keep up on it anymore.  Granted it hurts that I almost never get any of my breaks/lunches because there's just too much to get done and I'm only very slowly finding the right corners to cut to get it all in, but in the past month or so I have started to not take extra hours on my weekends and just letting the cards fall.  Hopefully I can recover some.
Granted June was pretty bad all around for everything.  So in addition to the 12 regular employees, the department has a manager, and then the dietitian is also kinda-sorta a manager for us.  Could cover the manager's stuff, come in early to pitch in for actual kitchen work, that sorta thing.
So at the end of may (give or take a week, it's been a while), he didn't show up to work monday or tuesday.  So they got worried and sent police around to his house... and they found his body.  Later it was mentioned offhand he actually shot himself which... he was about 37 and didn't show any obvious signs of drug problems, so... yeah, I kinda had that feeling as soon as they told us he had died.  So that was a good couple weeks.  Hell, they still have a rotating cast of managers from other facilities covering either my boss or his empty position to try and keep that floating, but in either case it's yet more instability.
Since naturally the call-in situation has remained and has kicked off almost a blood feud between some employees that feel they're getting screwed by it.  Also a couple weeks someone called off with fucking pneumonia.
A couple week's ago my boss' boss was in, and wanted to know if I'd go to some training thing over in Cleveland.  yeah sure, barely two weeks notice, that'll be fun.  Granted I didn't have to go quite that far, just meet up with a van in Toledo, since basically it was a "we have a bunch of accounts with this company and wanted to get them more involved with this"  which, combined with some stuff I heard while I was there, says to me they're kinda looking to just have all the healthcare kitchen employees transfer over to be employees witht he food company.  Honestly I'm down for that, not sure about everyone else though.  Anyways that's all well and good, total review for me (the idea is to be a "year one culinary school in one day", except I've actually DONE two years of culinary school) but it's nice to polish and hone that stuff, there's a lot of shit I've learned I just do not get to use.  They got a... much nicer hotel than I expected for us too, although thanks to amazing shenanigans half of us didn't have the right names for the reservations, the hotel overbooked and I ended up letting someone share my room once I got into it (although it had two beds so... yeah sure no problem man, let's keep things simple).  Still, nicest hotel I think I've ever been in, clearly designed for exactly this sorta clientele, big national companies doing overnights.  I take the day after off because uh yeah I got home at like 11:30 that night, next day is a natural day off.
I'm there like three hours the next day and, getting the sense of The Drama while I was gone, immediately feel as beaten down as I had been the preceding two months or so.  It's kinda... almost scary?  This is objectively the best job I've ever had, with actual stable hours, a raise over my max pay at any other job at hire, benefits, management exists, and over time I am getting to a point where I'll probably be able to actually get some time during the shift to break (and real talk, The Drama is totally fucking normal coming from restaurants, for all I thought this job having so much stability might blunt it a little.  Idiot me).  But I just fucking hate everything all the time, forever.  And while I have a reasonably stable base to seek other opportunities either in this company or in related fields, I just can't escape the feeling this is just going to be the same everywhere?  Like the problem is my brain raging against the concept of employment rather than any specific problems with any employers I have?  Which is causing no shortage of paralysis in terms of weighing options, let me tell you.
You just described a bunch of specific stressors - travel, a coworker's suicide, on top of drama and uneven hours.  So yeah, there's a problem in your brain but it's not that your brain is weird, it's that your brain is stressed out.  Can you take a vacation?  You sound like you could really use a vacation.
Well, like.   I felt more or less the same back in May, before that?  And despite the unexpected driving, the actual trip was very vacationy?  (I mean, a day away doing stuff that was different and unstressful, then two days off?  Not long but certainly vacationesque).
Where did I think I'd be by August this year? Not still interviewing, that's for sure.
I hate my job, I hate looking for jobs, I hate the feelings of self-loathing that come from sucking at finding a new job, and I'm just generally displeased with about 40% of my week.
But other than that, everything's fine in my personal life. We are all relatively healthy. My dad is suffering the effects of 40+ years of manual labor and combat, so he's got some serious hip/spine stuff going on, but no one could say it was unexpected. We are in a sticky situation with our rental in that we don't know if we'll have to renew, really don't want to -- would have been nice to have gotten a new job by now... -- and may not be able to afford to except that we may have to because it's not like anything ELSE around is affordable?
Current feels:
Still gnawing on the past week so mrf.  Okay so apparently I musta had a complete fail on brain containment because more than one person including my boss asked what was up.  Managed to give incomplete truth answers that nobody really pressed on, mostly slivers of the earlier rant.  But.
On the whole I'm just certain now I can't really do what I'm doing for more than a couple more years.  Independently of this particular position that is, the sheer physical labor and the general The Drama of this sort of position wear a lot day to day, and well... old.  Only gonna get worse. the ever-present knowledge that I will inevitably work until the day I die, because there's a 0% chance of there being such things as social security in even 20 years, assuming there's even a recognizable United States at that time, adds to that weight really.  And certainly I wouldn't live long enough to get anything out of mundane retirement accounts at my wage level.
But also I'm really not suited to supervisory positions I don't think.  Being in charge of people puts me entirely on edge at all times.  So I dunno really how to approach the issue, like what sorta things to look into.
Granted, it doesn't matter for a little while.  Wanna finish paying off the car (probably another two months) then let the bank account regenerate, so realistically spring or summer next year.  Joy.  Upshot that does mean I'll put in over a year there, which I said I'd do and which will even out resume a bit.
Whole thing has really nudged hard into old brainspace stuff though.  Like, I've always hated defining myself by job but at the same time what else, from an outside view, do I have going on.  I routinely think about that even while working, because like holy crap I am the most boring person and sound like work is the only thing I do.  Jeez, y'know.
God this case of the olds is pervasive.  Like I realized a long time ago that it was just best not to bother with relationships, for a host of reasons practical (hooooly shit do I not want to even ponder trying to approach people for dates), personal (I have no idea what I'm doing I don't even want to try to catch up to fuck, like a 20 year head start regular folk have) to the melancholic (I am a messy broken person and seriously I certainly wouldn't want to put up with me).  Ignoring all the regular reasons dating is like, really hard.  And a lot of times I kinda... y'know how in It one kid stays, describes himself as a lighthouse keeper?  I feel like that guy.  Other people go and have lives, I stay and get by more or less.  Sucks.
And.... well.  I keep feeling like the final breaking of the Fellowship here is nearly upon us.  Nothing damning or dramatic, just enough will have slipped away that the rest just kinda sit, silent, maintaining the record.  The lighthouse keepers, should the diaspora want to return.  Same general feel I had after highcollege.  Or as various jobs slid into "gotta leave now" zones.  And once that happens I just don't know anymore.  I feel like I have less ability to have close friendships, or even something I'm willing to describe as friends rather than just coworker, as time goes.
Just me, toiling away badly until it kills me.  Such wonders to look forward to.
fucking stupid things to say I suppose.
  Yeah I know.  No actual worries I don't think.  Just needed to void some of that out of brainspace and onto something else, y'know.
I thought you weren't supposed to have troubles with this shit until you hit 40 dammit.
One half of my job problem has been solved for me!
I got fired.
Technically they "restructured the department" and suddenly didn't have a marketing manager role anymore. Effective today. Without notice. They paid me severance (1 month) and left me eligible for unemployment, but yeah, I totally got fired.
Not wholly unexpected. Probably the best case scenario short of getting another job first because I was so very close to just quitting anyway. But it still sucks, and it triples the pressure to get a new job ASAP.
I guess I was luckier then you Captain K. We only had a power outage on Monday. However, our backyard flooded and from what I understood, if the rain had been one more foot, we would have flooded. My co-workers had their homes flood though. So small blessings all around.
Yet people are saying THIS was the worst storm in US history. I think that's a bit overblown given what happened to New Orleans and Katrina.
I've run into so many woke and active white folk in Germany here that this really could have been a place for me to relocate. But now time's aged me, I have too many responsibilities and emotional ties back in Atlanta, such that there really isn't much space. I mean, once conversations relate to anything Turkey or Turkish-immigrant, then they're half-woke, but I'll be damned if I haven't found a chair at many tables where conversations are lit.
I was also asked out by an astrophysicist.
I haven't been asked out in a while - ya know, relationships and stuff. It was sweet, but I declined.
I feel really old among most of these Fulbrighters, who are joining someone's lab. Humanities folk are higher in age and are heading their own projects. It's interesting how the sciences are far more heavily funded under this program, as if it's just a 1 year job for science folk, whereas it is the only lifeline a Humanities person can try for to do independent research. Oh how the cogs turn! I can't wait for the gathering so that I can run away to the oldies circle.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/09/11/eight-people-found-dead-after-shooting-in-home-near-dallas/
I don't know if I should post this here, or not at all, or what, but I don't know if I shouldn't either.  My brother Daniel was driving people to this party at the time the shooting happened, and is very likely (haven't gotten the chance to confirm with him yet) the person quoted towards the end of the article.  This was his entire close social group, and part of mine as well.  One of the victims, Tony Cross, was one of my best friends from high school.  I didn't know any of the others well, but knew of them from Daniel talking about them.
We unofficially know that the shooter was Meredith's ex-husband, who she kicked out of the house and filed for divorce from a week or two ago.  Redneck asshole full of generic male rage.
Please keep the families and friends of the victims in your prayers.  I, personally, don't really know how to react.  Going to be sad for a while.  Trying to keep on doing fun stuff - definitely what Tony would want from his friends, he was super enthusiastic about everything, worked in game design and was one of the most supportive people pushing me to keep on doing stuff I love as well.  Worried that comes off as flippancy though.  But what can even be said.
Everything is on fire, figuratively and literally. The figurative fires are in my immediate vicinity and also in politics as a whole (local, state, and national, and global), the literal fires are a short drive from me and currently painting my sky with yellow and polluting the air to unsafe levels. This is going down as the most destructive fire California's seen in a while and that's really fucking saying something considering how much this state catches on fire. BUT WAIT - it's still on fire, so there's time for it to get worse! And the winds are picking up again!
I still have no job. Some of the companies have just stopped responding to me which I'm pretty sure is code for 'we don't want you to work here' but how fucking rude. As we get into October/November/December, we get into slow hiring season. It does not, however, change anything in terms of our bills, so, that's fun.
At least my house isn't burning. Knock on wood. Embers travel.
[warning: unedited]
Academia's been weighing heavy on my mind and I like that I can use space here to dump my depression. It's pretty much saved my outlook about life and it's clear that I want to dedicate in my life pursuing the "life of the mind." I've always wanted to teach. And I've always wanted to pay forward the wisdom and time of the village that guided me to where I was. Years ago I was just working at Publix, queering it up in Atlanta, and as a young adult I never took the time for myself to figure out what lifelong roads I want to travel down. I didn't even know what the hell graduate school was until a uni professor was fairly forceful about me needing to "think about it." And so graduate school happened.
But for me, I've been seeing far too many things slip from the immediate grasp of many folk. Finally (although quite unevenly, and I would never say differently) a range of students of different backgrounds can access postsecondary education. This access becomes even more urgent given the shit-for-education around the country if you don't live in the right expensive housing district. But as numbers for women with degrees, persons of color with degrees, queer persons with degrees, immigrant students with degrees, increases to the chagrin of white folk who see college as only for them, the fucking opportunities and networking possibilities and quality of postsecondary education and economic enfranchising and mental health options are plummeting. Just as I got my Masters in Art History in racist-old Boston, having to deal with being from a household that made 30K under annually among wedded upper-middle class women who vacationed in Rhode Island, the industry for teaching said: no, now you need a PhD to teach. And as I'm getting my PhD and trying to stay cheerful about having to necessarily become a resourceful person because graduate school can fuck you in the ass three times a day, universities are saying now you need two published books to get tenure as tenure options in my field are plummeting and positions stagnate because the whole crystallized idea of tenure has been to protect the job security of old white men whose ability to sit their ass in towers all day comes directly from the domestic labor of their white wives who've they've overlooked because being a house mother or wife or house wife isn't an intellectual pursuit despite domestic labor scaffolding these damned men's abilities to reproduce and work.
Yes I know I'm getting a PhD and right now I refuse to edit.
So. It seems like I'm constantly seeing myself walking down a corridor with the strategies to be secure, only to run into an unexpected: "sorry, we're renovating" sign.
And I'm stressed the fuck out because I've been smart enough, guided enough, and had a "fuck you" attitude since my Masters that means I will be leaving a 5+ year Humanities (OH GOD) doctoral program without any debt. I'm really good at demanding and finding money for my projects. So sue me. Never go to graduate school if you have to pay one dime.
And now I'm seeing that those in power are aware and conscious that they're proactively crippling an entering, specialized workforce that's joining communities on government assistance faster than they're getting jobs. If you're a graduate student in the Humanities for example, your FELLOWSHIP or TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP money is not considered a wage. Your 15K to 35K annual money is NOT considered a WAGE. Yet you're TAXED on it as if it IS and our state and national governments find that to be okay. That means if you're in graduate school for 5-8 years (average matriculation at Yale for Art History, for example, is 8 years), you're probably leaving the program at 29 years old+ and of those years you're making money and generating money for a university and its "diversity" tax breaks, for example, and your wage labor will not be recognized by any business at all because the money you're making is not money--- say bye to buying a home off of substantial earnings, or say bye to getting a loan for something as simple as a scooter to fucking get around quicker because you're supposed to be a professional because your wage labor is not wage labor-- according to the law, written by people who generally hate the Humanities. And now science people will get screwed even more as underpaid workers, because NOW the TUITION assistance that a university SHOULD PAY in the first fucking place WILL BE TAXED because of this idea that graduate students are thriving and professionals who CAN pay for their education. Obama's administration cut subsidized loans for graduate students with the reasoning that 1) they can pay their loans suitably and 2) the money generated will go to undergraduate students and Pell grants DESPITE the OFTEN PROVED FACT that millions of scholarship dollars go untapped by undergraduate students because they're poorly informed by universities about things other than loans, gender, race, and university-specific funding.
So the graduate professional forces within the last decade who are matriculating now have to fight fiercely among their friends and peers for job opportunities that are fundamentally unstable. Especially for Millenials who refuse to move around every 2-5 years for jobs, this is a really disheartening situation.
It's a pity that the conceit "life of the man" is skewed to the opportunities that are generally squarely within white middle class male heterosexual conditions. And it's pitiful that this professional and personal lifestyle is protected within a growing university complex that's one of the major culprits to surrounding gentrification in urban areas that makes it even harder to graduate-level incoming workforces to buy homes because a 30k house is bulldozed into a 350k poorly renovated home. But you can take out your 20K max unsubsidized loan that lets you rent temporarily in an area that then means you push out a struggling workforce yourself all the while the university gains money from your debt and offshores their interest-bearing accounts while they increase tuition and bloat university costs with bureaucracy!
So I've been thinking about what I can do to stay in Atlanta and refuse an economy of academia. A job in academia would be perfect. I was never an easy person to get along with. But I want to give to students of a diverse university population like that of Atlanta (IE the so-called non-traditional student at other universities ARE the traditional students in this city) all the resources that people gave me: how do you negotiate graduate school from a working class background? how do you arrive at graduate study from a point other than strife? how do you get money from people to do what you desire? how do you build coalitions? how do you design your way about a specialist field? how do you move over and over and over again with l i t t l e m o n e y because you've decided to enter a whirlwind and would not like to leave until you see returns for yourself? why do we keep seeing museums as being for communities when they are fucking businesses that get tax breaks with little accountability and a BUSINESS that BUILDS equity from the shoulders of those who want this tax bill because when you're rich it's easy to be poor and you don't want to have your money taken so take my art because I get a tax break here too? or getting students to ask questions why the fuck do we not see artists as entrepreneurs of creativity whose products do x y and z but ALSO come from labor that's often overlooked because "people don't understand art." Well I don't fucking understand why I need to eat green spaghetti, or why there's green house building but the scientific individuals involved can't figure out how to lower costs. So.
I've been thinking about creating or joining or building a non-university postsecondary educational space for those who cannot attend/afford to attend/prefer not to attend colleges just to receive so-called rigorous training in thought. It's becoming a thing. And I know how to find money. So. I've made my google drive folder for "Project Space." Hopefully it gives me steam while I figure out how to negotiate the very system that seems to infantilize a functioning professional population, once I hit the job market I'm pretty much crippling myself by since I want to stay in Atlanta as long as possible and am only looking there. I just want stability. I've moved too much in my life. And I want others who enter the space I'm navigating to have that too, or figure out how.
Sigh.
