Music Tournament / Re: Music Tournament of DOOM- 2017 Edition
« on: May 26, 2017, 12:10:15 PM »
I'd like to draw everyone's attention to the sentence immediately before the one Tonfa posted:

Quote
I'll most likely be building the bracket to include as many noms as possible, so it's entirely possible I'll have to either cut or extend noms to get even numbers, although... y'know, who knows.

Two points here:

1) I want to include as many noms as possible.  Y'know, not cut things.
2) I haven't decided how big the tourney is.  If I get 250 unique noms, well by golly it is pretty easy to conjure up 6 more, rather than cut 122 to get back to the nearest factor of two.

At a quick glance, everyone is already pretty much checking everyone else's noms and making almost all noms unique, which with the number of responses so far puts us at something north of 200 noms... and that's assuming I just took Alex's first 15 noms and called it good.

"selecting against obscura" is there for two reasons.
a) If we end just a few noms north of a round number, then sure, I'll probably cut the game that doesn't have an entry on Wikipedia or TV Tropes instead of saying "oops, Gate was the last person to nom, he doesn't get any"
But moreso:
b) to help put everyone on the same page.  That is, if everyone kinda goes "well... I love this game, but no one else has played it, maybe I shouldn't do 10 noms from it",  I think the whole process will be a bit more enjoyable for everyone.  And I mean, the point of anything like this is to generate discussion and funtimes and comparative analysis in form of competition is just a common touchstone for the DL's brainspace, so that's a format to use.

So yeah.  There's like 5 noms total I've looked at sideeye so far, and they aren't exactly one person's noms.  And I'd still take them before delving into everyone's extra noms.  It's fiiiinnneeee, everything's fiiiinnneeee.

Okay so, as for point a), why not just give an equal amount of noms to everyone, in the order they were listed? That is fair and how it has been done before.

As far as b) goes, familiarity through a field of pre-known candidates or such making the process "more enjoyable to everyone", well. You saw the discussion in this thread, yes? "Everyone" is a very large misnomer and people in fact find value, interest, fun, points for discussion and conversation in a number of different things here. For some it's reminiscing, for some it's sharing, for some it's discovery. Some draw connections with the song and the moment in the game, others treat it as a standalone or let their own imagination conjure a context for it. To have one of such promoted as the word of god golden standard is offputting and on a personal level doesn't make me want to invest time into researching and finding nominations if there's a distinct possibility I get, say, ~70% of mine in while someone else bats a 100%.

The voting itself is a process that tends toward groupthink and if it turns out the majority is more comfortable with things they have previously heard the "obscura" will fall to the wayside soon enough. If they enjoy a song they haven't heard before it will advance. And so forth. Before committing to this I need to be certain that everyone is on the same playing field to begin with.

Since I am doing it by hand though, I'll likely be selecting against obscura as best I can

Ok this personally kills any of my interest. This is a flat rejection of anything outside of the safe comfort zone bubbles of mainstream and flavors of the month that are the Accepted Talking Points everyone around the proverbial campfire circle nods and agrees are tested by committee to be Good. I question the intent of any music tournament that takes an actively hostile stance towards discovery.

4
Loving the feedback and first recorded completed playthrough! Always nice to know there was worth to massively nerding out over a 20 year old video game to the point of performing surgery on it.

5
I'm not sure if I think bosses need more HP at this point. Like boss HP isn't too bad if you miss out on some key things certanily... but with ultimate weapons now available with no drawback + most of your hack players will probably have at least one of 2x Cut or Added Cut + stuff I'm not even doing like MP Turbo or Quadra Magic or W Summon (though the latter two do require sidequests). I'm not sure what to recommend.

Of course one downside of amping up HP is you get more bosses into the "can't sense" range which is super-lame. You could instead add more defences though this does overcentralise a few attacks (Comet, Bahamut series)... I guess auto-MBarrier would slow those down if desired, and if that's actually possible. Or you could try to find an ASM hack which gets rid of that silly 30k limit.

Not for lack of trying with regards to the ASM hack, unfortunately. I wonder if Powersoul itself is still too strong?

6
Vincent's limit physicals suck. *checks hack notes* Okay they were always this bad, they are doubled in power but row-subject now.

These used to be triple power but testing found the limits too powerful.

I don't know if I'd call every Trump voter a racist mother fucker (although a number I do think deserve that label).  I think there are some people, particularly in rural parts of the country (Appalachia, etc.) who heard "jobs" and believed him, and that's why they voted that way.  They are going to be terribly disappointed (he's not bringing back coal, at least in the level they're expecting), but that's what happened.

When the best, most humane possible argument you can make for voting is "fuck you, got mine" it's pretty dire.

Won't be going to a US-based one.

Materia -> Arrange -> Exchange allows you to remove materia from anyone at any time, which was true in vanilla as well. Didn't know this wasn't common knowledge, not sure how to communicate it in game if that is necessary.

also pls tell me about the pcs peeps

10
(general sentiment is that he feels a bit lacking and this in particular feels annoying to deal with when using him)

Re: this sentiment, I'd like people who have had a chance to play to offer their thoughts on all PCs they have used/not used and reasons for why, as well as thoughts on power level.

11
Maybe you should have left in some effective physical strats Mister Lag"Nerf Atomic Scissors and Power Soul"gy

Look Laggy might be the fall guy but please direct all dunking on PC changes to me

Good catch on the source, will roll a fix to that and Dyne in the next patch

we manage to avoid drowning yet again.  Then I get wrecked by a warning board

Music Tournament / Re: Project Diva X song rankings
« on: December 01, 2016, 12:17:33 AM »
EXCELLENT

1. The Lost One's Weeping - Easy winner. Raw, gripping, angsty energy that nails its message and is a hell of a lot of fun as a rhythm game song to boot. Guitar smash is the best bit of visual presentation in the game. Would have to think whether or not this made my top 5 in either of the F games, though...

2. Holy Lance Explosion Boy - Still a tremendously fun, energetic romp. Always Be Coming Kreygasm

3. Raspberry*Monster - Initial eh impression has grown into loving this jam. EVERY A.M. 6 I WAKE UP AND ROCK OUT AT MAX VOLUME. RASPBERRRRRYYYYYYYYYY MONSTEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRR

4. Streaming Heart - At sixth place and second tier Deco*27 already goes here? Well then. Second tier Deco is still good by any standards though and this has some of the game's best visual work to enhance it. E: ok it's worming its way up I actually like this a lot

GOOD

5. Satisfaction - Definite finger/foot tapper. Suddenly dub is great. Good use of visuals with the effects and change into dawn. Best of this kz/livetune type thing. It feels like it's lacking just a little something to put it over the top though.

6. Strangers - Lots to like here. From the intro to the hints of raw groove to the aesthetic. I just wish it got out of third gear though, having Raspberry*Monster come on after this is a drastic blowout.

7. Amazing Dolce - Yamashizuku musical skit. Fun.

8. Solitary Envy - Nice catchy progressions, subtle sense of offness and dread. Doesn't cross from like and appreciation to love once though.

9. Ai Dee - Do NOT lose your ID. DJ Luka is the star of this song, every moment of the rap is pure love and delight. The Mitchie M song exists around it.

10. Patchwork Staccato - I like the song quite a bit. Presentation here is super mediocre and boring sucking the life out of it.

11. Cool Medley ~Cyber Rock Jam~ - Does what no other medley in the game manages having snappy, memorable transitions and coherent tone in getting from the start to the end, source song list is nice..but why in the name of vo****id would you have two minutes of Unhappy Refrain and only a combined 45 seconds of Mylist and Tengaku? Giant disappointment in comparison to potential.

12. Brain Revolution Girl - Very attention grabbing and fun in the moment. Vacates brain instantly upon ending.

STANDARD

13. Humorous Dream of Mrs. Pumpkin - Creepy spooky brainy fun. Doesn't open up and leave a lasting impression to me like it does for others though.

14. A Single Red Leaf - Nice violin work in the latter part.

15. Hand in Hand - Typical kz/livetune housepop. Fun enough.

16. Even a Kunoichi Needs Love - If only this were 1, 2 Fanclub. It's fine though. Has more going on than it seems at first brush.

17. Calc. - Literally exists, fine background music. Sweet coat.

18. Slow Motion - Average Pinocchio-P. Has its moments but another one of those producers that doesn't quite hit my headspace.

19. Babylon - Tohma doing his messy thing. It's no Envy Cat Walk. Lacks a binding thread.

20. Name of the Sin - It's trying to evoke a number of feelings but just barely misses on every aspect.

21. The First Sound - Very nice presentation for one of the first vocaloid songs around. Unfortunately it's one of the first vocaloid songs around.

22. Love Song - Cute or annoying, depending on when I listen to it.

MISSxTAKE

23. Urotander, Underhanded Rangers - You have to go turboham to make this work with how common this kind of parody is. Unfortunately it doesn't go anywhere and I was left with a halfhearted impression. 200% needed a real PV to salvage it. Oh Kaito, what have you been reduced to.

24. Chaos Medley ~Giga Remix~ - How not to do a medley power hour begins here. Weaker than all of its original parts, adds nothing.

25. Elegant Medley ~Glossy Mixture~ - What even is this? This is a case study on the absolute least coherent mixing possible. Shame, original songs are quite good.

26. Beginning Medley ~Primary Colors~ - The setlist isn't as good as Chaos, so

27. Cute Medley ~Idol Sounds~ - The setlist isn't as good as Beginning, so

28. Love Trial - general apathy

29. Ending Medley ~Ultimate Exquisite Rampage~ - Yeah y'all made a transparent device to torture rhythm game players. Very funny.

30. Sharing the World - The tuning is a disaster.

31. Tale of Deep-sea Lily - The tuning is a tragedy.

32. LOL -lots of laugh- - lol no

14
Well, this has been ready for release for a while now and I've agonized over making a beautiful, perfect introduction post for it for days so instead just enjoy the game for now and the proper pleasantries later !!

Patch 1.00 - 8/26/2016

Download the TF7 patches for all three discs here. This is for the PSX version of the game. You'll need a fresh ISO, the patch can be applied with PPF-O-Matic.

PCs, skillsets, equipment are much more distinct. Click for a large overview of the changes!

Enemies fight back but won't force you to grind to level 99 in Reactor 1.

Thanks to Laggy for being the co-author, Qhimm forums for the tools, and any testers and all you cool people.

Discussion / Re: 2015 Games in Review
« on: January 02, 2016, 08:35:43 AM »
I don't really feel like digging my memory for everything I played for 20 minutes. Special shoutout to NEO AQUARIUM -The King of Crustaceans-

also forgot yakuza 5 but that one is mostly 2016 list anyway since I'm like 4% done

10. Persona 4 Golden

Played maybe a third of this. The life sim part is a good time even though I desperately wish the game had some quality-of-life event markers so you don't have to run everywhere every day. The dungeons and combat are not great.

9. Oblivious Garden ~Carmina Burana

Chinese visual novel about a shamed war hero banished into a luxurious prison garden that is (I think) unintentionally super arthouse. Nothing is internally consistent between routes, including the source of internal voices residing in the main character's head. Dialogue is stilted and feverish. At any point our erstwhile main character may argue that translation is unnecessary because you can conquer any foreign countries and absorb their culture and language into their own, claim that he can't make cookies because he went to the army when he was young with everyone accepting this at face value or compare the beauty of a princess with that of throwing a nut at a squirrel's head. Plot points appear and are dropped at a moment's notice. No one seems to care about the MC sleeping for literal weeks at a time. There is also a tea making simulator, I created undrinkable strange liquid every time. B+ want to read more chinese visual novels

8. IA/VT Colorful

Vocaloid rhythm games are the genre I've by far spent the most time on ever since DLC8. IA/VT is far too easy on technical merits, instead opting to dazzle and confuse with the visual presentation of the notes. Has a good setlist though, a metric ton of songs and plenty of them are good. Has a few clunkers mixed in though and aspects of the game are very budget.

7. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Originally played an hour of this and shelved it in 2014. Gave it another shot and with some time what the game was going for clicked. This is a big budget version of Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden, with better gameplay. The somewhat open exploration combined with an actually good implementation of ATB that makes essentially battles action-based with a limited energy budget you can work around in various ways feels good. Once you work out all the system abuses it falls apart though but by then you're at endgame so doesn't really matter unless you're into the hardcore grind (don't be). Everything is larger than life and the game presents all of it deadly seriously as Lightning saves the world in a lime green zoot suit. Enjoy the ride.

6. Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster

It's FFX-2 from 10 years ago, now complete with my teenage dreams of raising a killer Malboro, and a full fledged roguelike mystery dungeon game. A good game, still a sucker for all the loving detail put into the post-FFX worldbuilding and NPCs. Also FFFashion.

5. Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX

Pluses over Diva: Covers of songs with other Vocaloids (though there are missed opportunities there), cool mixups with holds and doubles Diva doesn't go for, built in perfect demos. Minuses: Songs too long, chibi style and videos visually boring, 3DS hard to hold properly without wobbling, less localization effort. Works for the Diva fix.

4. 100% Orange Juice

Got it in 2014 but played a fair amount this year too and the developers are still going strong with support in form of balance, new characters and fields. 4-player virtual boardgame of roughly 20 minute rounds with chill (always use announcer voice C) audiovisual charm that numbs the crushing despair as the cruelty of the universe asserts itself over and over. Simple on its surface but there are lots of little tricks and decisions you can do to wring maximum value out of the situations you get in to add those few percentages to your winrate, starting with the deck building where every player's cards are submitted to a common deck. Even the pubbie community at large is cool, probably because the people prone to ragequitting would never make it past hour two of the game. Dehumanize yourself and face to dice.

3. Metal Gear Solid 5

Tremendous stealth action game. The gameplay is so insanely good if you're into the genre you guys, with near limitless creativity for your approaches. The plot is hollywood tripe with a few Kojima-isms, but after the first hour there's so little of it it doesn't get in the way. Worst part is the exorbitant resource requirements for a lot of your cool toys.

2. Undertale

I was skeptical at first, but yep. This is GOTY, obviously made with an astounding amount of love. The only thing that needs to be said is that there is only one thing in the game I can think of offhand that I tried and the game had no special reaction to it. getting zapped by the electric maze on purpose Just try the game yourself.

1. Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F/F 2nd

Can't not be Diva. Absolutely love the gameplay, the games've introduced me to a lot of great music, the visual flair. Got gud, not as gud as Jim but conquering Tengaku Extreme felt tremendous.

38. I'll Miku-Miku You♪ (For Reals)
Nice ad, where's the song? (For Reals)

37. Clockwork Clown
36. Miracle Paint
Both are different but rub me the wrong way. Clown would probably move up a few places if it ditched the last line.

35. The Intense Voice of Hatsune Miku
Too obviously a gimmick for a rhythm game.

34. Glory 3usi9
33. Decorator
32. Packaged
Low end cheerpop. The snubbed hug in Decorator is pretty funny.

31. Sakura Rain
It's pleasant sounding but does absolutely nothing to grab me.

30. 2D Dream Fever
Tries going into at least three separate directions and then ends up wasting the last minute doing nothing anyway??

*GAP*

29. Colorful x Melody
Cheerpop.

28. Hello, Worker
The sentiment is something I didn't expect to see in PDF, but the song itself is pretty weak.

27. Two-Sided Lovers
hi wowaka, this is your weakest effort sadly

26. SPiCa -39's Giving Day Edition-
Somewhat pretty. Would be better off not being faux live.

25. Luka Luka ★ Night Fever
EXIT TUNES Presents the Very Best of Vocaloid Eurobeat Vol.5

24. Double Lariat
Very chill. There's a great live cover of this.

23. Romeo and Cinderella
Could be stronger, but the synth (complete with faux clapping) is pretty bad. Slow section at 2 minutes-ish is nice. Also "You're right, I should be honest / The axe I dropped was one of gold" is a great lyric

22. Clover♣Club
The vocaloid lifestyle is not straight edge

21. Kagerou Daze
Somewhere between good and tedious. Repetition is on purpose, but the voice tuning could be better too...

***HUGE

20. Envy Cat Walk
An audiovisual car crash, with all the pros and cons of it.

19. This is the Happiness and Peace of Mind Committee

18. Pinky Swear
Delightfully dark/whimsical. Doesn't quite hit The Great Song Zone but has enough merits to be very enjoyable regardless.

17. Meteor
Very pretty. Sound doesn't quite hold up its end of the bargain.

16. Wintry Winds
At this point there are no flaws, everything is just strong.

15. Blackjack
Okay I could have done with a tamer video here though. So close to a 21.

14. Doubleganger
13. Love-Hate
Now THIS is how you do cheerpop, based Kagamines. The random murderfaces roughly halfway through Doubleganger are hilarious. Love-Hate is really cute. And great in live covers!

12. Two Breaths Walking
Rocking and pretty.

11. Erase or Zero
BRO 5 BRO

10. Close and Open, Demons and the Dead
To have to put this so far down is a testament to how much good stuff there is...

9.  Kokoro
Very pretty. Really good use of robot voice.

8.  Akatsuki Arrival
7.  Knife
Good stories combined with good songs. miku sure dies a lot huh

6.  Cantarella ~Grace Edition~
Generated with some kind of algorithm to directly appeal at me

5.  Paradichlorobenzene
Ah. I hated this song and thought it was the worst on first listen. It's an *****ly ********ing piece that has grown on me to a huge degree.

4.  Roshin Yukai
Super pretty. Love the lyrics.

3.  Thousand Year Solo (DIVA edit)
Outstanding use of Kaito's voice. What a stunning song.

2.  Break It, Break It!
Outstanding use of Meiko's voice. Great song with a lot of visual intrigue going on.
