Dragon Quest Eight: Journey of the Cursed King
« on: December 24, 2007, 07:52:12 PM »
Welcome to DQ8's stat topic!  Fun times will surely ensue within!

DQ8 plays nearly exactly like any other DQ game, so if you're familiar with any of them, this should be pretty simple to understand.  For those of you who haven't played any of the games in the series, shame on you, but I'll forgive you for it.

Mechanics
The game runs under a turn-based battle system, with higher agility characters acting first, with a bit of random variance thrown in for fun.  Yes, FUN!  The exact amount is unknown, but it shouldn't be more than +/- 25.  Closer to the lower end, all things considered.  Stat explanation, for good times:

Vital Statistics and What They Mean
HP: Indicates the amount of life-force a character has; once reduced to 0, the character is deader than Britney Spears' career
MP: Indicates the amount of spiritual force a character has; this stat is expended upon using special abilities, and must exceed or equal the cost of the ability to be able to use that ability
Strength: Base Attack stat
Agility: Speeeeeeeeeeeeeed and evasion
Resilence: Base for Defense stat
Wisdom: The always useless wisdom stat actually has a use this time - all spells have a wisdom range for damage, so the higher this is, the higher the damage of spells; this has no effect on reducing magical damage received, however

Characters have innate resistances and equipment-related resistances (equipment listed in the 3rd post of this topic), but otherwise are all equal when it comes to receiving magical damage.  Defense is quartered and Attack is halved for damage purposes, so, for example, 200 defense reduces damage by 50 points.  More of it is obviously better, but you need a lot of it.  If an attack would fail to break defense, it either does 0 or 1 damage, equal chance of either.

Note that none of the Attack+X skills are factored in to damages below.  Attack+25 raises damage by about 13, so it's not a huge difference overall, but should be noted.

For Moses, I'm not assuming his Dragovian stuff, though I will list it.  Unique stuff, simple concoctions in the Alchemy Pot and storeboughts are listed below.  As a note, all weapon statuses seem to be ~10% accurate, so generally not that useful overall, but there if desired.  Equipment is thus:

Tension is a new feature in this game that allows a PC to focus for a turn.  Each time they do this, the tension meter rises.  One use raises it to 5, two to 20, three to 50, and four to 100.  The use of a tension-dependent skill after tensing (which includes nearly everything except full healing/revival) will raise the effects of the skill by 1.7, 3, 5, and 7.5 times, respectively, for each tension level.

I am assuming characters have level 40 skill point totals, and am taking what I feel is the "best" set-up for them in the DL.  The skill point totals for each character are as follows:
Hero - 189
Yangus - 202
Jessica - 207
Angelo - 149

All skills learned naturally, via plot or via the skill trees listed in the character descriptions are taken into account below.  Additional skills not listed here will be listed later if so desired.

Monster Team stuff.   The "Call Team" ability summons one of Moses's monster team set-ups (he can have a max of two teams, 3 monsters each).  The ability has initiative, and costs 10 MP (5 with Spell Cost -50%).  Here, I'll detail some monsters, and what they can do.  As a note, once summoned, the team stays out for 3-4 turns (3 turns unless the team is a special team, where they last 4), or until killed or called back.  Moses can only use the ability twice; once the team is summoned and leaves/dies, he has to call the other team.  Once they're gone, he can't call again.  Anyway, here are potential interesting monsters.

The Triple Threat Team
*Combining Nohi, Cybot and Roborg together in one team allows them to use the potent Stream Killer Attack on a single target*

Nohi
HP: 630
Attack: 225
Defense: 200
Agility: 125

Attacks
*Attacks Twice*
Nohi Slashes Viciously!: 66 physical damage
Nohi Uses Kacrackle Slash!: 66 ice physical damage
Nohi Fires a Powerful Laser Beam!: 67 magic damage, MT
Nohi Aims and Lets an Arrow Fly!: 100 physical damage

Cybot
HP: 525
Attack: 210
Defense: 175
Agility: 125

Attacks
*Attacks Twice*
Cybot Slashes Viciously!: 58 physical damage
Cybot Uses Kacrackle Slash!: 58 ice physical damage
Cybot Fires a Powerful Laser Beam!: 67 magic damage, MT
Cybot Aims and Lets an Arrow Fly!: 96 physical damage

Roborg
HP: 494
Attack: 194
Defense: 198
Agility: 177

Attacks
*Attacks Twice*
Roborg Slashes Viciously!: 50 physical damage
Roborg Uses Kacrackle Slash!: 50 ice physical damage
Roborg Fires a Powerful Laser Beam!: 67 magic damage, MT
Roborg Aims and Lets an Arrow Fly!: 92 physical damage

Stream Killer Attack: 798 damage to one target; requires the use of all 3 robots's turns; they seem to like to use this combo a lot, as I've seen it nearly all the time on the first action, and usually done on the second action if not.

The team can also use the combo attack Triple Swords for 317 damage to one target, which fails.  They don't seem to use it much, to be fair.

Other Monsters

Talos
HP: 801

Okay, I was bored and decided to actually peruse the mechanics guide. Looks like OK has already pulled elemental resistances from there. What he HASN'T done is update damage figures, so here's what I have.

Physical attacks:

Their damage is simple, At/2 - Df/4. I don't know what defence OK/Dhyer/whoever used, but I want to make an observation based on enemy attack stats:

Empyrea - 386
Leopold - 299
Marcello - 320

Note that Leo does at worst 10.5 less damage than Marcello, and Empyrea does at least 33 (probably closer to 35-40) more. In other words, it looks like the current stat topic entry is overestimating Marcello's physical by 20 or so. (It might be less of an overestimate, but then Leo and Empyrea do more damage.) Nice to know that my claim that Leo and Marcy have near-identical physical damage was in fact correct.

Desperate attacks average 90% of the attack stat. Thus:

Leopold's Desperate Attack - 270.

Enemy Magic attacks! These have a fixed range. They don't give a damn about Wisdom on either side (a few care about Level, though). In fact, enemies don't even have Wisdom! So if you remember two enemies doing different damage with spells (except Wind Sickles and Thin Air) or breath weapons, you are remembering incorrectly. They are all magic, i.e. reduced by the Magic Barrier spell. Here they are:

Kasizzle (Dhoulmagus, Jessica): 70
Kacrackle (Dhoulmagus, Jessica): 65
Kafrizzle (Jessica, Marcello, Rhapthorne): 114
Zap (Empyrea): 64
Kaboom (Rhapthorne): 84

Thousand Whips (Dhoulmagus): 40
Thin Air (Dhoulmagus): 48, Wind
Sharp Feathers (Dhoulmagus): 70
Blazing Fire (Dhoulmagus, Rhapthorne): 75, Fire
Cold Breath (Leopold, Rhapthorne): 130, Ice
Wind Sickles (Marcello): 116, Wind
Pearly Gates (Marcello): 140, Wind
Meteors: 88, Grapple
Magic Burst: 270, Fire

EDIT: Stat Down Resistance

The following bosses have 15% resistance (who cares) to stat downs: Marcello, Rhapthorne
The following bosses have 50% resistance (decent) to stat downs: Dhoulmagus, Jessica, Leopold
The following bosses are immune to stat downs: Don Mole (YES), Empyrea
The following bosses are too awesome for stat down resistance: Captain Crow

Speaking of which, I finally know how much damage the game's most important boss, CAPTAIN CROW, does!

Thin Air: 43, MT, Wind
Physical attack: Probably around 80. Again, depends on defence used.

After Tension x1: 1.5x damage
After Tension x2: 2.5x damage
After Tension x3: 3.5x damage
After Tension x4: 5x damage

Yeah, easy OHKO at max tension. Hell, he's possibly there after three uses, which means on turn 2. Backup MT magic damage is pretty mean too once charged. He also reduces all damage by 30%, meaning in practice his HP is roughly equal to that of Rhapthorne's unscaled, despite being fought a good 15 hours earlier or so. He reduces damage by a further 30% while he's at max tension.

Rank!

Ok, finally got off my ass to do what I've been meaning to do to my topics for a long time.  Full update and everything, etc.

Everything is fully updated, after looking at the mechanics guide (which I had looked at to get agility and HP for bosses earlier - I got the resistances by testing on my own), which NEB reminded me existed after a long hiatus.  There are even more monsters and a list of all skills to peruse, so look and love.  Any questions or comments, feel free to leave.

Figured since there was a recent post here, this should be the first one to modify.  Now, only a crapload more...

I was browsing the mechanics faq, and Twin Dragon Lash's numbers look... off.  It's supposed to be two hits of 1.5x multiplier, for 3x total damage, but OK has it doing 4.55x damage at 273 to a base of 60 physical.  That's way too much to be due to random variance; there has to be a mistake somewhere.

The best guess I could come up with is that OK's number is with Oomph factored in; that would double the first hit of TDL, yielding approximately 180+90=270 damage.  If this is the case, the TDL figure needs to be changed, as well as the damage average.  Otherwise, the mechanics faq has TDL mislisted.

I should actually test this at some point, but I was thinking about this and I have to conclude that TDL's mult is wrong. 90 per hit at endgame sounds wrong beyond all reason, but I was thinking "maybe I am remembering it against very, very low defence. Or just misremembering". But I'm pretty sure I'm not, because...

We know max tension is 7.5x damage, and TDL is supposed to be 1.5, so that's 11.25 overall. I remember max tension TDL doing well over 1000 damage per hit against Ruin (before Oomph or Sap), who has below average Def but not that low, and have a combat record to prove it with. Jess' base physical shouldn't be more than 77 or so to him, which would yield 866 damage, well short, and well short even with random variance.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
Maybe.

I'd just like to point out that there is another weapon option for Hero. Sword users would likely want to opt for an 'Uber Falcon Blade' if they couldn't get anything better than a 'Blizzard Blade'.

Though the Uber Falcon Blade may reduce their attack power a bit, it more than makes up for it with its double attack ability. That's a double physical or skill in one turn. (whatever you use x2) A normal physical becomes a Falcon Slash and Falcon Slash turns into Falcon Slash x2. (or 4x hits in one move for 300% of a normal physical's damage)

It would give Hero much better physical damage. (5HKO instead of the 7HKO he has now)

Archive.org is amazing. I can't believe that I did not think to look of these before. There are damage averages here for boss, which is pretty useful. Also, since you a better idea of how the SDs on speed play out. Here's my pure, unadultered stats (as tempted as I was to remove incorrect notes on magic defense).

More boss notes! This includes defenses and speed tiering. Also taken at higher levels than OK's boss topic. These are not really needed anymore since the big draw was that we did not know speed at the time, and this helped us get a better barometer.

Dhoulmagus 2: (Didn’t get 1 because 1. 50% double acting hurts him 2. Slower 3. Weak to magic (takes about 20% extra))

HP: 2000-2100; Reduces Physicals by about 5 a hit. Average to magic
Seems more suseptable to stat-downs (Def down went about 67%)

Speed: Below average
Jessica: 1.778 (1.036 SD above)
Angelo: 2.611 (.512 SD above)
Guv: 2.778 (.074 SD above)
Dhouly: 3.444
Yangus: 4.556 (1.628 SD below)

PC HP: 232
PC Damage: 75 (1 Call Team, 2 members with 75 damage a turn, one of 50)

Attacks:
Physical: 65 Physical
Sharp Feathers: 65 MT Physical
High Speed Combo: 100 ST Physical (Very subject to defense)
Kasizzle: 80 Fire MT (Don’t think this can be doubled)
Kacrackle: 80 Ice MT (No doubling)
Belching Fire: 75 Fire MT, Ignores Buffers (No Doubling)
Shout: 40% Stun (No Doubling)
Wave of Ice

Eval: For me, he usually can unleash 180 damage at best. Slow and without many tricks, but his HP is good. Low Godlike.

Empyrea
HP: 1900, Reduces Physicals about 57.5%, Average to Magic, Halves Fire

Speed: Above average
Jessica 2.08 (.867 SD above)
Empyrea 2.24
Angelo 2.92 (.605 SD above)
Guv 3.17 (.212 SD above)
Yangus 4.84 (1.68 SD below)

PC HP: 311
PC Damage: 130 (Call team members likely do about the same)

Jessica 2.08 (.867 SD above)
Empyrea 2.24
Angelo 2.92 (.605 SD above)
Guv 3.17 (.212 SD above)
Yangus 4.84 (1.68 SD below)

*Attacks Twice
Physical – 145
Grabs hold – 180
Zap - ~60 MT.
Flashes Brightly - Blind, ~60%, MT.
Midheal - Heals ~90 HP.
Wave of Ice

Evaluation: Not uber speed, but still fast. Her HP is bad (1.15 or so with CT factored in), but her defense is nasty. A mid Godlike with that damage (although I see her going Physical+Grab Hold), but she hates evasion or defense.

Sir Leopold
HP: 4400, Reduces Physical About 7.5%, Reduces Magic About 5%
Stat Downs hit Easily

Jessica 2.08 (.85 SD above)
Angelo 2.58 (.43 SD above)
Guv 2.7 (.16 SD above)
Doglike 3.28
Yangus 4.38 (1.43 SD below)

PC HP: 350
PC Damage: 165

*Attacks Twice
Physical – 85, Evadable
Desperate Attack - 255 (It’s his crit, so it’s rather rare)
Exhales Cold Breath - 130 Ice, MT, Ignores Buffers (Can’t be doubled)
Intimidating Scream – 35% Stun (Can’t be doubled)

Evaluation: Low 2HKO normally, and no WoI. His HP is ok, but nothing decent. Enough to make him borderline H/G though, I guess.

Marcello
HP: 3500, Cuts Physicals About 15-17.5%, Takes about an extra 8-10% from Magic, 25% resistance to explosive and Thunder magic, ~50% resistance to fire and ice

Speed Tiering
Jess 1.73 (.88 SD above average)
Marcello 2.46
Angelo 2.91(.41 SD above average)
Guv 3.15 (.12 SD above average)
Yangus 4.47 (1.4 SD below average)

Evasion: 12.5%. Might help him against…Emily?

Average HP: 360
PC Damage: 170 (Now have 2 Call Teams)

*Attacks Twice
Physical - 105
Kafrizzle – 115 Fire Damage (Really wonky at times)
Wind Sickles – 105 Magical Damage
Opens a portal to the heavens – 135 Magical Damage, MT (Can’t be Doubled)
Waves of Ice - Dispel, MT.
Midheal - 90 HP healing.

Evaluation: Better than Leopold since he can double magic. Trades HP for speed and elemental resists, which I think helps him. Low, low Godlike.

Rhapthorne
6000 HP, Reduces Physical about 10-12% (Hard to say exactly since there aren’t exactly randoms around), Average to Magic

Jessica 2
Angelo 2.6
Guv 2.75
Rhapthorne 2.95
Yangus 4.65

PC HP: 398 (For damage, its about the same as the topic, although a bit higher due to some better weapons and seeds. 230 maybe).

Jessica 2 (1.07 SD above. Nice level gain, I guess)
Angelo 2.6 (.27 SD above)
Guv 2.75 (.01 SD below)
Rhapthorne 2.95
Yangus 4.65 (1.33 below)

Attacks Twice
Smashes with his arm – 110 physical, MT. (Can’t Double)
Flings his Balls - 2 hits of 140 physical damage that hit random targets; can focus on the same target
Calls down the anger of the Gods - 4 hits of 70 damage that hit random targets; can focus on the same target. I’ve seen 3 focus on one PC with four standing, but it usually focuses at 2. (Can’t Double)
Meteors Fall From the Sky – 80 MT Damage. Can't focus
Belches Blazing Fire – 70 Fire MT, ignores buffers
Kafrizzle – 120 Fire
Kaboom - 100, explosive, MT.
Eyes Gleam Eerily - Sleep, 100%.
Body flashes brightly - I haven't seen it, and damn, I gave him a good 200 chances.
Waves of Ice – MT Dispel
Exhales Cold Breath - 105 Ice MT

Meditates - Heals 500 HP.
Magic Burst – 250 Fire magic, MT. Drains MP, only used after Meditate
Prayer- Recovers MP. Always used on the turn after Magic Burst. May always be paired with Wave of Ice.

Evaluation: Mid Godlike boss slugger. Most will see him OHKOing physically, which is pretty good (he barely does to me with 420 damage, I think). Still, he wants more speed or HP. Sleep is cool though.
...into the nightfall.
