Steam Holiday Sale - RECOMMENDATIONS REQUESTED
« on: December 25, 2009, 12:21:12 AM »
So, Steam's being pretty badass this week and a ton of the games are on sale.

http://store.steampowered.com/?freebacon=yes

So, I'm starting a topic so those of us who want to can toss around recommendations on what the good deals are, etc.
I've already taken the liberty of purchasing:

~$35.00 L4D2 (on sale today only),
$2.50 Braid,
$5.00 KOTOR, and
$2.50 Audiosurf.
~$7.00 Deus Ex

I've got around 60 bucks to spend on games, so around ~$20 that I'm willing to spend (perhaps more, but that's unlikely).  Anyone notice any deals that I'll probably end up kicking myself later for not seizing upon?

Ones that I can speak for, Trine is pretty good at $8.  Puzzle platformer.  Kind of more platformy and less puzzle version of Three Vikings.

Torchlight is Diablo 1 redone as a pick up and play lunch game that you can play all night, it is very good if you are into that kind of thing.  $10

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is $2.50.  It is Lucas ARts point and click adventure and Indiana Jones, take that as you will.  Actually forget that http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2102/  Get this instead, it has that in it and you get 3 other games for the same price.  HOly fuck that is a good pack for $2.50.  2 Indiana Jones games, Loom and the Dig.

Holy shit STALKER is $1.50.  It isn't amazing, but that is a pretty hard to beat price.  Shooter that takes place in a restricted area around CHernobyl, that one is probably worth the price of entry.

Beyond GOod and Evil is $5.  IF you haven't played that GET THAT.  It is a good game.

Secret of Monkey Island is $5.  If you don't have it and liked Monkey Island 1 or have never played Monkey Island then you should get that.

Assassin's Creed 1 is $10, if you want something with a lot of shiny to it then this is a pretty good game for it.  It is shallow, but it is pretty fun.

Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena  is $6.70 and I actually recommend this since you get the original Riddick game done in the same engine for free with it and that itself is a pretty good game.  I am still getting to Dark Athena (working my way through Butcher Bay occasionally).  Good value.

Serious Sam HD at $10 is a good buy if you like your old school style shooters.

Star Wars Jedi Knight collection at $10 is 4 games and one stand alone expansion pack and they are all pretty good shooters.  Very good value.

Edit - Freedom Force is $3.50 and is a neat little comic book squad based real time game.

Witcher is not bad at $13.60.  Hack and slashy RPG where you play the Medieval equivalent to James Bond.

Stuff I can't vouch for  though.

Eufloria is an indie little art fag type game that I have heard good things about, $10.

AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! A Reckless Disregard for Gravity is $7.50 or in a pack with something else for $11.30, it is... something.

World of Goo you probably have caught a bit of cursory drama about Piracy and stuff, it is  $5.  Apparently very good.

The Path is $10, but doesn't seem to be on sale.

X2 the Threat is a space shooter type thing, it is apparently not bad.  $2.50

For people who like adventure games, Telltale Games' entire catalog is on sale for $50 total. That's five games that go for $35 each normally, plus a few shorter games. So....yeah, if you haven't tried them yet, now's the time. (Edit: The complete list is Sam & Max Season 1 and Season 2, Wallace & Gromit, Strong Bad, Tales of Monkey Island, the two games based on the Bone comics and a Texas Hold 'Em game.)
Likewise, the LucasArts adventure pack (LOOM, The Dig, and the two Indiana Jones point-and-clicks) is on sale for $2.50, and if you missed Secret of Monkey Island at $2.50 a few weeks back, you can get it for $5.

Other things...
Serious Sam HD. $10, worth every penny.
Torchlight for $10. If you liked Diablo, you will like this, because it is Diablo, only prettier and with a lot of extra polish.
Freedom Force and Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich for $5. Superheroes! And then, superheroes punching Nazis! Where can you go wrong?
The Eidos pack. Batman: Arkham Asylum, Thief 3, Deus Ex, the complete Hitman series and fourteen (yes, fourteen) other games that don't really matter, for $50.

Eschalon Book 1 is $10 and that is supposedly alright?

Titan's Quest and Sacred are both cheaper than Torchlight but inferior Diablo clones, but they were alright at the time.

Sherlock Holmes - Nemesis and The Awakened are both  $10 if you want a Sherlock Holmes games.  The Awakened was a bit cheaply put together but it was ultimately a spot of fun, but can't speak for the other one particularly.  (Awakened was that Holmes + Cthulhu = WIN game that came out a few years ago)

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is $5 and is a neat little Deus Ex style game.  I have played it through 4 times or so, consider it worth it at least once.

Jade Empire is $10 as well.  IT is a Bioware game for $10.  You know what you are getting yourself into with that.

NO MORE POKEMON - Meeplelard.

I haven't touched it (largely due to school), but I recall downloading one of the Monkey Island games when they made it free for Talk Like a Pirate day.  I can't check since that's on my desktop, but does anyone recall which game that was?  I'm certainly looking to purchase some Monkey Island, but if I already have one there's no use buying it again.  >_>

Also, holy crap how did I miss Beyond Good and Evil.  I recall playing it on Gamecube a while ago but I never beat it.  Time to fix that.

Hell, the LucasArts pack sounds worth it for the price alone, too.  Mmm.

You have the first episode of Tales of Monkey Island ("Launch of the Screaming Narwhal"). Telltale's games are all released episodically, with four to six chapters making up one full game (Tales of MI has five total). So the full pack has....*calculator*...27 episodes, total.

So it is.  Fail.  Edit - The Awakened at full price.

X-COM Complete pack is $10.  You should all buy that since none of you did last time I announced it being on special.  You get 1 masterpiece, 1 good game, one alright game, one space shooter that I have no idea how bad it is and one hilariously bad console shooter (Still worth playing for how BAD it is).  If I need to tell you what kind of game X-COM is and why it is awesome then you haven't listened to a single suggestion I have ever made.

Edit - Easy to have missed BGAE, man I missed so much shit in my first post it isn't funny.  I am still looking and finding it hard not to buy stuff.  This afternoon after presents I think I will hit Steam pretty hard though.

Should be Ep 1 of Tales of Monkey Island, IIRC.

I can't comment on many of these since I can't seem to bring up the Steam website on my Mac, but I'd have to heartily recommend the Lucasarts pack if you like P+C adventure.

January 3, but there are a half-dozen deals or so that switch out every day. Offhand, the only important one at the moment is the id pack.

Cool, it ends on my birthday.  Might pick up the X-Com pack, just so I have many redundant copies.  And hey, maybe it will work better than other ones I have >_>

L4D2 deal ends tomorrow morning sometime.  I have no idea when the holiday sale ends.  I assume tomorrow.

So, picked up the Secret of Monkey Island pack.  Veeeeeeeeerry tempted by the whole Telltale games pack but if I purchased that, it would certainly be the end of the games I can reasonably purchase, and also I probably won't even play any of those for a looooong time.

Actually, I think I'm done buying games unless something really shiny comes along (might get the X-Com pack buuut eh).  I have enough to keep me distracted for a good few months.  Thanks for the recommendations.

Dammit, I should have waited a week on Torchlight and KotOR. I would've saved $10.

I too am... incredibly tempted by the Telltale pack. I... argh. That one's available until January 3rd, I think? Mrrrfff. I know I'll probably also want to buy KotOR 2, soon, but... $50 for a completely absurd number of hours of entertainment. I may have to.

EDIT: And I've heard that the Hitman games are kind of great, which makes the Eidos pack look tempting. Curse your infuriating bargains, Steam.

I can't speak for all of them, but Hitman: Blood Money is an excellent game and well worth whatever they're selling it for.

If anyone here knows, would it be possible to buy KOTOR right now and not download it until later? My HD space is kinda limited right now and I have other games to play first anyhow, but $5 is really tempting and it'd be nice to have it for later.

Yep, you get infinite downloads with steam and you don't download anything until you set it to download.

Hm. Today's specials include Burnout Paradise and Prey. I like wrecking shit in the earlier Burnout games but the racing side of it is not my thing, and I don't know what Paradise plays like. Prey I know nothing about but it's got a decent Metacritic score and costs as much as a cheeseburger. Thoughts?

Burnout Paradise has plenty of wrecking shit alongside with racing, if that's your thing I say go for it. Prey is a perfectly decent FPS, but nothing to write home about.
