I guess I can't really argue with that, Fenrir.

Apparently there's a bug where ringing the bell for summons or invasion in the Forbidden Woods makes the game unwinnable. Guess what I did immediately before shutting down today?! So hopefully that gets patched in...relatively short order.

Also Soppy making me glad I didn't bother with more than the B route. (I already knew the final was another obnoxious rhythm battle. I didn't know they'd contrived a way to make that somehow more objectionable.)

Bloodborne: Taking a break. I beat four bosses and a chalice dungeon.

- You get to populate your harem like in Dark Souls 2, except there's a choice between two places? I went with the most suspicious place. I "recruited" two ladies so far. Including one old super bitter woman with no gratitude whatsoever. Sexy.

- Random chalice dungeons are indeed not too great. Enemy placement is decent, but rooms are very blocky and poorly strung together, and there's no map when there should be one (because here, the level design isn't good enough to not have a map)

- Pumping everything into vit and strength pays off. So far. I beat the last four bosses (well, including three chalice dungeon bosses) on the first try. I was relying on the two handed axe moveset before, but now I'm pretty much purely one handed because it's way faster, and the damage is still high enough now. And I can switch between a torch and a blunderbuss for my secondary weapon. ALSO:

- The moveset for each weapon is pretty huge; so staying with one weapon only isn't that much of a problem. You get (and I've used all of it extensively):
+ R1
+ R2
+ R1 combo
+ R2 combo
+ Charge attack R2
+ Jump attack R2
+ Running attack R1 (and maybe R2, not sure)
All this x2 because each weapon has two (very different) stances.
+ two other attacks that are used when changing stances mid combo. Voila.

- So what I meant by this is that I just discovered the charge attack R2.
Two handed axe charge attack = "I am a helicopter whee", this does two hits and can send enemies flying, including minibosses.
One handed axe charge attack = PANCAKE ATTACK IS BACK. On a starting weapon. Praise From.

Huh. He's on a high bluff just past the area with the two incredibly annoying hunters, a little beyond the small churches where everyone inside just chants "Bless us with blood" over and over again.

I've rescued four people by now. I sent the ungrateful old woman (whose name I still don't know, and who by now seems to be going crazy) and Arianna (Cathedral Ward lady of the night) to the chapel just so I could see what they looked like (I really want Arianna's dress) even though the chapel caretaker is totally a creepy monster man, along with a priestess I found trapped in Yahar'gul. Arianna gave me some of her blood as a reward, and I'm sure nothing at all bad could happen from infusing myself with a prostitute's blood right? The only person I've sent to Iosefka's was a totally not suspicious at all dude I found standing half-naked amidst a pile of bloody corpses. I'm sure this won't end badly at all.

I haven't even tried a chalice dungeon yet.

Statwise, I pumped Skill until 25, after which point it looks like I already get diminishing returns on damage scaling. Weird. Otherwise Endurance 20, Vitality 25 and climbing, whenever I stop getting notable rewards from that I'll probably go back to pimping out Arcane because bomb more etcetera. Wasted two points on Strength so I could try the useless electro club, haven't raised Bloodtinge at all. Whatever, like I have any serious use for guns on pure damage grounds (I did find a cannon with an absurd base attack rating of 200, but you need like 30+ strength to use it. Nope nope nope.)

Yeah, I'm very satisfied with the variety of my starting weapon (and running R2s definitely exist, they're very handy). The game is really pretty bad for Fashion Souls, though. Every single other player I've seen is just wearing the basic hunter outfit. It's sad. (Although I guess it's not all negative if it means Giant Dad cosplay is no longer possible. The legend has died.)

Pretty cool that a relatively big part of the gale is hidden like that.

That's funny, because the Yahar'gul girl told me to stay away and that was it. NPCs have been screaming at me a lot lately. I mean, more than usual. This may have something to do with Insight, since I've been hoarding it like crazy (I currently have 40)

I've been using the flamethrower (!) lately and it's been really fun. Some enemies also have specific death screams whne burnt to death. Stuff like "It buuuuurns it buuuuurns!" Classic.


I beat Dark Blood Beast Souls 2: Electric Boogaloo is down, on the first try again.
I think the bosses are generally easier but the punishment for dying is higher (Having to stock up on items), so the game encourages to explore other areas before coming back instead of dying over and over. (which would force farming for items)

No death in this game sounds possible but completely insane (No access to Hunter's Dream), it might be too difficult since there can be no weapon upgrades.

If the priestess didn't talk to you, that might confirm that she only talked to me because I was wearing the church outfit. I mean, she actively greeted me as though I was another priestess. So that's kind of neat I guess?

I tried the flamethrower right when I got it and it seemed bad. Too slow, poor damage even though it scales from one of my decent stats. Am I missing something here?

Darkbeast killed me within ten seconds. I'm not going back there until I'm out of other options. I've killed four out of the six bosses I've beaten on the first try, but that doesn't really do anything to diminish how emphatically scarier these battles are than like anything else I've played.

I would say the real punishment for dying in Bloodborne is having to backtrack. Not really an issue with bosses since there are shortcuts and you can run past normal enemies very easily, but if it had happened to me at the end (or even firmly in the middle) of a long area like Old Yharnam or Forbidden Woods then controllers surely would've been tossed. I think they overdid it a bit with the length of some zones.

You're probably going to pass me soon at the rate you're going.

I don't think the backtracking is big at all (assuming shortcuts are unlocked), we're just back to Dark Souls 1 standards instead of Dark Souls 2, with some bosses being very close to the checkpoint (cleric, vicard, darkbeast) and some being further away like 4 Kings and Bed of Chaos were in Dark Souls 1 (father, super disgusting thing in Old Yharnam)
I also beat another boss and that's the new easiest Souls boss ever. (Move along Prowling Magus) Not sure how close it is to the checkpoint but this doesn't matter.

Meanwhile, while blood vials are plentiful and cheap, losing 20 blood vials fighting a boss is still something. You can't just go and fight the bosses 20 times like with O&S. If the game had estus, you might have tried to fight the cleric and bloodark beast a few more times instead of just leaving.

It's not great at all, but it's really really fun to use if you have some bullets to spare.
It's the kind of weapon you have to upgrade though. I got it to +3 because I have ten thousand billion trillions basic upgrade stones.
I use it against enemies that have a sliver of health left.

Pillars of Eternity: A few hours in, playing a female Moon Godlike Chanter. I like how the character creation is structured - lots and lots of choices as far as race/class/background, but fewer skills to worry about after you pick the fundamentals of your character, so leveling up isn't a nightmare of choice paralysis. Setting has a ton of history and generally feels nicely lived-in, to the point where I've been surprised a couple of times that it's new for this game. Story is waaaaaaaay too early to tell. Characters are basically null thus far.

Gameplay-wise, it's way more Baldur's Gate than Planescape: Torment. Blank-slate protagonist, lots and lots of mandatory fighting, especially in sidequests (in the same old RTWP shitfest, to boot), threatening enemies even in Easy, and so far few meaningful dialogue options. I was hoping for exactly the opposite of that, and I could have worn they said there would be almost no mandatory combat, so I'm not exactly happy with this state of affairs.

I am though! 

I started a fighter and made a wizard then promptly recruited a wizard 4 seconds later.  Then did a hard dungeon and found out I could have recuited another character, who was a fighter.  Made a Priest then.  Got mad when I found out that was the next thing I would (and did) recruit.  Dumped the create your own dudes.   Kept playing and had fun.

Seriously glad I didn't rage restart because 2 fighter is really good at controlling battlefields.  Also the classes I was considering retooling are literally exactly what you can get as recruits. 

You don't get a thief though and that would have been nice.

Not a ton of forward progress this afternoon. My brother tipped me off to some stuff I'd missed so I went back to the Workshop. Still not sure how to get into the locked door upstairs, but apparently there's a hidden lower level. A...really, really lower level. Imagine if Dark Souls 2 had added poor lighting conditions to the tribulations of navigating that descent. Yeah. I was promised something special at the bottom and yeah, that's definitely true, what where am I this looks familiar? But probably I didn't get excited about exactly the same things he did. Hey, that's an unusually tiny treasure chest, let's see what's in it! *Cid opens chest* *Cid's eyes bug out* MBisonYESclip.jpg

I don't care if it's mechanically the worst armor in the game, I'm keeping it.

I also tracked down crow woman because apparently her questline gives you an outstanding Skill weapon. This, I discovered, is true, after I murdered her because I'd fucked up the quest and she'd gone insane (actually everyone's going insane at this point, the old lady thinks I'm her daughter). So anyway this dagger looks pretty good on paper, right, I mean exactly set up for my kind of character, so let's dump all our spare second-tier ore on it. And then let's give it a test run vs a boss in somebody else's world.

You guys I'm in love. It's like someone at From said, "Hey, remember the Gold and Silver Tracers? I don't think Dark Souls let you get enough attacks per second with those things. Let's crank that up by a factor of two." I just mash R1 and everything in front of me disintegrates, full combo is like 9-10 attacks long (and I might even be running out of stamina before I can complete it). Character build is set for the rest of the game, hit Skill/Arcane caps (it's a magic daggers!), pump Endurance because jesus christ those combos. Belmont mode is over, blender doll is for real. This is what I signed up for.

Plotwise, shit is getting real Lovecraftian. Apparently I am unaffected by the glitch and able to proceed, yay. I met an old friend and he took me to I place that I might find interesting. "Nightmare Frontier." I walked outside, fought one enemy, kthxbye. That is starting to apply to every place that I can presently go.

Also I decided to take a trip back to the clinic to see how Mr. Totally Not Suspicious At All is getting along. It's, uh...well, I don't think it's his fault actually. When I sent everybody else to the chapel, despite the chapel caretaker looking super sketchy, it was at least in part because I didn't entirely trust the doc for not letting me see her and for the fact that anyone I sent to the clinic would presumably disappear behind her door. After certain plot events, Iosefka no longer answers the door. Instead there is just a Chthulian throbbing noise highly reminiscent of the eldritch monstrosities I can now see looming over the city. Apparently there's a backdoor to the clinic that I missed in the Forbidden Woods. I dread going back there to look for it, but I think I'm going to have to.

Also, Fenrir, at some point you want to revisit the little girl's house. It, uh...it gets worse. I dunno what the timing trigger is, but check back there once in a while.

Bloodborne: I am pretty sure I have found the new Terrible Place With Terrible Things that wants to replace the Valley of Defilement / Blight Town / Shrine of Amala.
It is the Nightmare Frontier, do not go there. Avoid at all costs.

Incidentally I got in two fights against invaders and won both. I think invaders get an HP penalty because I did not have the upper hand at all during the first fight. PVP was pretty cool, but a large part of that was due to us not healing. They must be a bit boring with each opponent having 20 blood vials on hand and willing to use them.

Oh, great news: I now know the reason behind being invisibly teleported in the air then invisibly teleported back on the ground with 3/4ths of my HPs gone, early in the game. Also, bad news: I now know the reason behind being invisibly teleported in the air then invisibly teleported back on the ground with 3/4ths of my HPs gone, early in the game.

Also Cid, you were right about the nun!
No update to the little girl story, there's been no response when trying to knock on her window in a while.
BTW, try doing a gesture to the doll. I did it by mistake. Results were cool.

Did those invasions happen in the Nightmare Frontier? Because while I was briefly there I kept seeing messages about "a bell-ringing woman rings a sinister bell*," and the lamp would momentarily become unusable like bonfires always did when an invasion was pending. Nothing quite managed to happen, though.

(*I see this message a lot when appearing as a summon in other people's worlds, too. No clue why.)

My understanding is that summoning help will always try and summon a PVP opponent as well  (Bosses don't scale as well or something?).  Think that was in a Vaati vid.

Yes, those were in Nightmare Frontier. I don't think you can be invaded elsewhere without using bells.

I have the cannon now. It uses 10 bullets per hit. I've upgraded it to +6. I love it.

I think I cleared Nightmare Frontier + all of the Forbidden Woods I could handle. I burst out laughing when that guy who was basically eating corpses (?) asked me a place to live. He could have said "BTW did you happen to find my shotel on the way here? I've lost it". I sent him to Iosefka's.

I can only do some bitesized gaming right now but something tells me that I'm not going to be able to resist Pillars of Eternity for very much longer (thanks Cid!). Can't join in on Bloodbourne talk for a while.  :(

Valiant Hearts: So I picked this up on the latest Ubisoft Steam sale, and it was an intriguing game because games aren't often set in World War 1. It has gotten positive press because of its depiction of war and how it displays aspects of war that aren't often shown in games.

And I think I kind of hate it. It actually does some things very well in terms of being an easily accessible education game. You can pick up little collectibles, each of which has a wiki-like entry, and these are really interesting, ranging from the role of medics to more esoteric things like doggie gasmasks and small touches like how gold buttons on officer uniforms were actually disadvantageous because it made you more visible. The problem is that the game is very tonally inconsistent. The narration that comes in between chapters does a good job of conveying the horrors of war, the terrible conditions during the winter, how shitty trench warfare was, etc.

The big problem is that whenever something poignant happens, it is usually followed by mechanics that are... there just isn't a better word than "gamey."
*You throw rocks to distract armed guards so that you can knock people out with a soup ladle.
*Only one character can cut wires. If you run into a fence he is the only one who can ever do anything about it in the history of the world. Only one character can dig, I don't know what the German guy does. The dog is better at everything than everyone.
*You go on fetchquests for everyone all the time. There's one thing where you have to find some dude some socks so you find a dirty sock on barbed wire that you have to wash and he gives you an ink bottle and then you have to find some bread to feed a bird and the bird drops a feather so now you can write a letter to your daughter.
*You use sheep as cover.
*You use a bone you find as the handle of a lever.
*There is a French officer who won't get out of your way until you bribe him with wine (...).
*You shake apples out of a tree and that distracts a set of guards for some reason (they just stare at them forever!).
*The nurse character heals people with a rhythm game.

It's just a weird set of contrived situation after contrived situation drawn from the old tradition of weird adventure game logic, and that just doesn't work if you want to have a game that is wanting to depict World War 1 with any kind of weight. None of the game mechanics are specific to the era, and they're all almost entirely disposable. I feel like something like having the nurse try to heal mustard gas victims but having the rhythm game being impossible and the patient dying would have been a good idea here, but I think in general I may have wanted a much darker game than these guys were willing to make.

It makes me question what exactly they were setting out to do with this. At one point, there will be a fruitless infantry charge into no man's land where your companions just get endlessly bombarded, which shows how quickly a life could be taken in this war. Then there are sections where you are on a car chase running away from policemen in a situation where it seems like the Benny Hill song should play. Or, the main villain of the game is a Looney Tunes caricature of a German Baron, which I would totally be fine with in a game with that kind of tone. He cackles madly while launching dynamite at you and to beat him you throw dynamite into his tank hatch, after which he makes a comic book getaway. This is one area where the visual style (which looks quite good) may impede things because the violence is very stylized and cartoonish, with cartoon style bombs, dynamite, and explosions. Also, if you die, you start at the latest checkpoint and the game seemingly checkpoints every 30 seconds, so it really seems as if there is no consequence for getting caught or accidentally digging in a trench and hitting a bomb. I'm not sure if this game was just meant for kids or what, but it is not really afraid to get into dark and weighty subjects. It's just bothersome that the game's tone and pacing constantly belies that.

I will say that the ending is quite good:
So Emille, who is fairly pacifistic, has a commanding officer that constantly ordering them to charge directly into fire and bombardment. Your companions are getting gun down, basically to no avail. To prevent any more loss of life, Emille hits the officer with a shovel, which kills him. He is court marshaled and sentenced to death. The ending sequence is him in chains, walking slowly towards a firing squad. He sees ghostly outlines of some of the friends (the other controllable characters) as he walks and there is voiceover of him reading a letter to his daughter:

"Dearest Marie,

As the war ends for me, I have no regrets. I have seen too much horror. I hope fate has been more merciful to you. My time on earth is brief, and mine has been filled with so much joy that I can only be thankful for how much I've been blessed, most especially for the wonder you brought into my life. This letter is my last. I've been found guilty from a military court for the death of an officer. It was not my intention to kill him. War makes men mad. Though I failed Karl, I know my sacrifice has not been in vain. My honor is assured, since it is the will of God to separate us on Earth, I hope we'll meet again in Heaven. Keep me in your prayers. Your loving papa, always." [gunshot]

It then cuts to a Emille's plot in a veteran's cemetery, saying that we must strive to cherish the deaths and sacrifices of those lost during the war.

It is very emotional and well-done, and if the rest of the story had a similar level of thoughtfulness then this could have been SO GOOD.

At least the dog is amazing.

Ori and the Blind Forest - I finished this. It isn't a long game, but nothing too much has changed since my last post about it. The platforming feels good, albeit not perfect, but it helps when you get things like triple jump and the feather and the ability to "ride" projectiles. All these things make traversal a lot easier and faster, which is good because there isn't fast travel (BOO!). Backtracking can take a while but from what I could tell, there wasn't a ton of hidden stuff anyway, so making long trips to explore old places may not necessarily be worthwhile. Combat never gets that great. You are always spamming while your homing bullets hopefully hit shit, so your primary role in combat is actually just to dodge. There aren't really bosses as such, so combat seems like a bit of an afterthought.

Instead of bosses, there are these very deliberately paced set pieces. For example, there is one where there is rushing water and you need to use the ability to launch yourself off of enemy projectiles to get to high ground or you drown. I'm not really sure how to feel about these. You basically have to fail a lot in order to properly get a hold of what you're supposed to do, and occasionally, the enemies won't cooperate and you will make one mistake and have to start the entire setpiece over again. This was a little jarring a game built around the ability to save anywhere and where you generally don't lose progress. They weren't incredibly hard, but you basically have to fail them to learn how to get through. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I don't think some of them were designed that well. For example, in the water one, the water rises as a function of the progress you're making, so it doesn't matter if you're doing "well" in your current run because the water will just shoot up anyway. I do like some of the creativity involved with the setpieces and they are gratifying to get through I still think they could have used some tweaking.

The visuals remain gorgeous throughout the game. There is sort of this Okami/Miyazaki-like restoration element (mostly in cutscenes), and you do want the affected parts of the world to be revived because of how freaking beautiful it is at the beginning. Each dungeon you go to has a bit of an elemental take to it, so the environments are nicely varied, and the most striking thing is that there are always things moving in the foreground or background to make the world seem alive. There are stills that could very easily be desktop backgrounds or poster prints. I think it's the best art directed game I've seen in a long time, and it's worth seeing it in movement even if you aren't that interested in the game otherwise. The soundtrack is also excellent.

I ran into a really nasty bug after one of the cutscenes where my character couldn't appear and she gets blown away and all was fog. I had to patch my save and activate debug mode to get around it. That was basically gamebreaking though, since it happened every time I loaded. They're patching that and I think adding the ability to teleport between save shrines, so that should really improve the game. It's not a great game but it is good, and it's worth $20, although maybe wait until they have patches.

Bloodborne: Out of Yahar'gul and Nightmare Frontier, I chose "Fuck that." I went to Cainhurst Castle instead. I figured, it just looks like a frozen ruin, there can't be anything here remotely as bad as those other places, right?

It must be possible for a person to be more than 100% wrong. I feel certain of this now. Worst enemy in the game bar none.

Place turns out to actually not be as terrible past the courtyard, though, since by that point you're mostly just fighting slow (but stealthy) enemies with poor melee range. Also the loot is swank:

-0/10 game if I don't find a fabulous Victorian dress to incinerate monsters in.

Potential 0/10 game status firmly revoked. We are properly fancy now (though at the moment I'm favoring the crow outfit because I am fucking terrified of everything again). I also found an amazing musketeer outfit complete with stupidly tiny fop hat. So fashion's getting a lot better mid-game. Did I mention you can dress up like House Gryffindor hitting the town on spring break? That is also a thing that you can do.

Anyway, fought the boss there once, died, went elsewhere. It looked pretty easy until Unlimited Blade Works happened. I'll try back later. Fenrir, I think you're right, the possibility of burning through my stores of healing really does discourage me from trying bosses repeatedly. I hate the feeling of working with finite crucial resources in a game, so if something gives me trouble I'll just try to ignore it as long as I can (and twice now I've just summoned people for bosses I didn't like mechanically just so I could move on with the game). I also had a host pull an invader while I was there and yeah, PVP can be really stupid when both sides are perfectly willing to spam heals. Whatevs, I'm not here for PVP anyway. Speaking of, though, willing to bet Pope Gwyn's guarding a covenant HQ.

I gave Unseen Village a shot after that since the front door is open now. Fuck, I might actually prefer Nightmare Frontier to this. This place is terrible and the bells, the belllLlLLLss! After running around like mad and getting no solid idea of the geography and probably missing a bunch of loot in the rush to murder summoners, I fled into a place that looked familiar. Hey, wait, isn't this the Yahar'gul lamp? Why isn't it active? ...Oh. Oh, that's why. This town's seen better days and I liked it more when creepy music and death pigs were the worst it could throw at me. So run run run and somehow I get steered back down to the depths of the prison and there's nowhere left to go but Darkbeast's room. Well...well, I'm here, might as well try again.

This was so stupidly easy that I don't even know what happened. My brother suggested I fight underneath him, so why not, RRA strats worked once. I run up to his hind legs, mash R1 a bunch and then suddenly he's not electric anymore and almost immediately 75% of his healthbar is just gone and he's actually very clearly running away from me. Sooo that fight was probably meant for a lot earlier in the game, but anyway, let's see what he was guarding! ...Oh. Thanks, guys.

I have to say, by this point every aspect of this game's setting/background/story is getting vastly weirder than I had any remote expectation for early on when people were just unfortunate enough to turn into beasts all around me. I can't say I have any notion anymore where it's going, only that I'll regret finding out. "Lovecraftian" applies more and more not just in the proliferation of horrid abominations but in the suggestion that the root cause is even more fucked up than what's onscreen. Vision of a woman in white dress with the abdomen bloodied + background noise now punctuated periodically by sounds of a baby crying + I found a goddamn umbilical cord somewhere that reeks of plot centrality = what in the everloving fuck is even happening anymore.

Pillars of Eternity - This game is so Baldur's Gate that I already had a crash that was caused by failing to be able to load an area that was resolved by deleting my cache (or just the area that failed from my save file in this case).

The Nightmare Frontier gets way way worse. Bring some frenzy res there.by the way.

Unseen Village feels too endgame-y for my taste, I'll explore the game a bit more before finishing it. I still have no idea what you meant by going way down in the workshop.

Judging by your trophies, you do by now!

I found the red phantom covenant and decided to give it a whirl in Nightmare Frontier, but the host I invaded was idle so instead I decided to cheese things out and scout the area with impunity. Wow, it really is so much worse than it even looked initially. Just wow. (The worst part might honestly just be the horde of hunters, though.) The only plus I can see is that the ore-drop creature (which I'm just calling Mr. Skullhead until someone comes up with a better name) is goddamn everywhere in that zone.

I'm out of town for the rest of the day so I rather expect I'll have to stop reading your posts for a while by the time I get back. (Oh who am I kidding I'll do it anyway.)

Resonance - played through

Fine enough. Got what is seemingly the best ending and 337 points out of 340. I'm not sure whether the missing points were from some incidental interaction(s) that I missed, or if they were due to deaths? Documentation with the game does state that you'll lose points when you die, and that running out gives you a game over, but if the amount of points you lose is that trivial I'm not sure how that would be likely to ever happen. On re-reading the documentation, it's a little more ambiguous than the way I described it, which makes me wonder if it's being disingenuous.

I was interested in the short-term memory system when it was initially presented, but ultimately I don't feel it was very fun to use. In concept, it's like you have an inventory of things you wouldn't normally be able to carry, but in practice this led to a lot of backtracking as picking up inventory items is a primary interaction whereas committing items to memory isn't. I was also under the impression that you had a limited amount of memory slots, but as long as I have the documentation open anyway, there isn't one mentioned here - of course it could be described in the game alone.

It just seemed like most of the time, the situations where you needed to commit something to memory were situations where a character would 'naturally' remember the item in other games, rather than something new? Maybe someone who hadn't played many/any adventure games before would find the system more usable.

Long-term memories were better, albeit a little abstract. The difference between long-term memories being memories of situations while short-term memories are memories of objects was possibly a little unnatural-seeming. I'd say that maybe a system with just the long-term memories and not the short-term memories would be better, but then we'd just have Return To Zork's tape recorder. Albeit a more discriminating one, I guess.



Bioshock 2 - played through

Pretty great. Got the good-good ending.

Reading up on the endings and their prerequisites later, it seems kind of strange that killing the third person can be considered to be an act of revenge for purposes of the endings, but oh well! I didn't kill persons one or two but did kill person three, and rescued all sisters. Kind of mostly implied by what ending I got I guess. Meanwhile persons one and two were essentially consigned to death anyway seeing as how they weren't tagging along, maybe they can leave via whatever magical means Brigid was planning on leaving by.

I hardly remember anything from the original Bioshock gameplay-wise, so it's difficult to say whether B2 was better or not in those regards. I have vague recollections of wandering splicers being far too common in the original and it feels like that wasn't the case here, but those memories are extremely sketchy. Checking my report on the original, I don't mention that at all.

While I have that up:
  • I also generally neglected most plasmids here, but I used the electric one and its descendants in combat a lot. Fully upgraded and used the Shotgun a lot also, so things were getting zapped left and right. Also occasionally remembered to summon security robots with the upgraded security plasmid. Hated them continually getting in my way when I wasn't in fights though.
  • I don't think that any of the missions in this game fell to the depths that the worst ones in the original did. So, that's a plus. I was wondering for a while how they were expecting to get through Dionysus Park in its condition if the detour hadn't become necessary, but given that the train typically runs underwater anyway I assumed they would have just driven through without stopping.
  • Didn't have any issues with the linearity - I think the main difference is that your linear path in the original unnaturally conveniently goes to all the places you need to go, whereas here you're trying to take a natural linear path and everything keeps conspiring against you to hold you up.

I am very much not a fan of the gathering segments, but at least they didn't take too long.

I'll probably start on Minerva's Den in the next couple of days.

I just fought a martyr king who had a throne installed on the roof of his giant frozen castle, not giving any fucks. Very difficult and fun battle, probably one of the best in the Souls series, just like Pops earlygame. Looks impossible on NG+. (unless you rely on parries, maybe?)
Then I went through a part of the game in which it was quite obviously VERY displeased in me, yet I had no idea what I had done wrong. This lasted for about 5 minutes until I read the environment more carefully.
Classic Souls.

No no no Cid, trust me, the worst part about Nightmare Frontier is absolutely not the ambush I had entirely forgotten about until now. It has to be either the dudes throwing giant boulders or the nightmarish things near the end. The swamp is pretty bad too.

Also I went back there to invade someone, did the helicopter attack with the axe and then shot him with my huge portable cannon. kthnxby. Then I invaded someone called Xx-Destiny84-xX who instantly disconnected. Classic Souls.


BTW, I was a bit shocked playing Demon's Souls when I noticed that they didn't animate people talking. Mouths moving and such.
Three games later, and on the PS4, they still don't give any fuck.
