[Dark Holy Elf]

XF was just the beginning. The beginning of my madness.

In part 2 of data nerding about RPG writing, we tackle one of the RPG series with the highest-regarded writing, Suikoden. I'm aiming to cover all of Suikoden 1-5 here; those who know me know that I'm mostly doing this for S2/S3/S5, but S1 and S4 are gonna come along for the ride. Plus it's been 14 years and I've still never got 108 stars in Suikoden 4, maybe this run will finally fix that.

Some notes:
-We're going in series order, rather than chronological.
-Each separate textbox counts as a line. Textboxes in this game are pretty variable, but 1 to 40 words is typical.
-Textboxes that don't contain any letters don't count.
-Dialog choices of the silent main count towards Tir's (etc.) line count. In general I'll try to roleplay a bit and choose what I think are canon choices; different choices will of course change the exact line count slightly.
-Required dialog of nameless characters is noted as "other". Optional dialog of nameless characters (townsfolk etc.) is not included, but optional dialog from named characters IS included. I'll grab what optional dialog I find, but I'm not going to go highly out of my way to do it, and in general I won't grab things that feel non-canon. Some of the specifics will be slightly arbitrary, but obviously it shouldn't make a big difference.

Unlike XF, the Suikoden games don't have clear dividing points, so I'll be making my own, complete with titles. I'll indicate where each chapter ends. At least I'm first I'm generally aiming for groups of 200-300 lines.

I can't say I was expecting Odessa to be #2 at this point, but it makes sense; the writers want her death to make an impact (see also: Ted getting the most lines until he leaves) and also show that she's the leader of the Liberation Army in truth and not just name. My prediction at the start was that Gremio or Mathiu would finish with the most lines for Suikoden 1, though Viktor is possible. Ciato's official prediction is that Cleo is virtually guaranteed to be #4.

Random observations this time:
-The Kirkis/Kwanda chapter is by far the biggest one gameplaywise so far: five dungeons (four, really, but you have to do one twice), two boss fights, the first war battle, and the first duel. It also has the most lines of all my arbitrarily defined chapters so far, but not by that much, and it doesn't really make any sense to split up.
-Gremio continues to never have the most lines in any one chapter but is building a pretty substantial lead overall. If he wasn't about to meet with an unfortunate accident in the near future nobody would have a chance of catching him.
-Somehow Krin has the most lines in the Lepant chapter! Wasn't expecting that one. Hur hur here is rope. In general the writers seemed to like giving lots of lines to slimy personalities (Kanaan, Ledon, Krin).
-Mathiu's not getting as many lines as I expected, for all that I feel like his bigger strategist moments are definitely still to come, so we'll see.

Suikoden 1 done. Final thoughts:

-Suikoden 1 finished with 3803 lines, which is barely half of what XF had (and also shorter than many individual Ace Attorney cases). It's a relatively short RPG, though it is relatively story-dense within its short run-time.
-Viktor ended up chattier than I expected; the Neclord arc pushed him well ahead of the competition. It will be interesting to see if he ends up with the most lines in the series (since he gets a bunch more in S2) or if someone else with lots of lines in a single game can challenge him for that spot.
-As expected, Mathiu and Gremio were the other two in the top three (Mathiu started getting considerably more lines/personality late so he was able to catch up), with Cleo indeed in #4.
-For me, the most surprising person in the top 20 is Zorak. Who? I've played this game ~4 times before and I barely remember him. But hey, his only character trait is that he talks on and on and on... guess that's accurate!
-Both temps manage quite a lot of lines in their relative short times in the plot, finishing #6 and #7.
-He may be a "silent main", but it's interesting to see how many lines Tir does get. Most of them are pretty boring, of course, but there is some characterization in there.
-Suikoden 1 is not a game which gives many lines to its villains. The most talkabtive pure villain is Windy with barely 1% of the lines! Teo, Kanaan, and Kraze actually all have more lines than her or Barbarosa, although they pick up a large chunk of their lines while they are allies (albeit assholish ones in the case of Kraze and Kanaan).
-Male characters account for approximately 80%(!) of the line total, largely owing to the fact that the top 20 includes only three women (Cleo, Odessa, and Leknaat). XF this is not. I expect every other Suikoden to be closer to parity than this, as each has at least one female character more important than Cleo.

Y’know, I knew Luc was only barely in Suikoden 1, but the disparity between him and other characters who were important in one arc in this then disappeared from the series is still fascinating considering he ends up the main villlain in III.

It is funny to see him way down there. Apple to a lesser extent as well.

I just started Suikoden 2. Here are my predictions, before I started:

-The game will have around 50% more lines than S1, probably between 5000 and 6000 lines.
-Nanami will have about a tenth of them, so 500-600.
-Jowy, Viktor, and Shu will fight for second. Viktor probably has fewer lines than S1 but not by much. All around 300? Ciato's prediction is that Jowy will be #2 (and based on the first hour, this is looking good).
-Apple and Flik will also break 200 lines. Luca is possible but I'm leaning not based on my experience of S1's villain cast. I doubt anyone else does.
-At least one of these predictions will be hilariously off in some way.

Comments:
-It's safe to say I underrated Jowy here. He already has more lines than anyone had in Suikoden 1, and we're probably only one third done at most! Granted, he just left the party, so he's not going to rise as fast from here on, but still, 500 seems a reasonable possibility. Him and Nanami being the top two so far is utterly unshocking but the total line volume might be.
-I also underrated Riou; the game has a lot more dialog choices than S1 did. He already has more lines than Tir. Hard to imagine him finishing below 5th overall now.
-I expected Viktor to have more lines than Flik but the gap is massive, which is funny since most players tend to think of them as a duo. Flik is probably the character underperforming my expectations the most.
-In general the recruitment scenes are definitely longer than in S1; note that even minor stars who have already joined (see the names from Templeton to Rikimaru on the above list) tend to have 10-16 lines, whereas 2-6 was the norm in S1. It's not much but does help add a bit more characterization to these bit players.

Comments:
-Yes, we've just completed the first visit to Greenhill and the game already has more lines than Suikoden 1! Crazy.
-Nanami, Jowy and Viktor all have more lines than any S1 character. Nanami finally passed Jowy for #1 in the Greenhill arc, and is unlikely to relinquish this from here on.
-Riou is looking like a good bet for #4, though it must be noted that many of his lines are very short (and of course, player-chosen), so there's a bit of an asterisk with him.
-Fitcher having that many lines blindsided me, but makes sense.

Final thoughts on Suikoden 2:

-So hey, this game was even longer than I realized. It's not twice the length of S1 by playtime (at least for me), but it is just shy of double the line count. Definitely a very line-dense game! It also has more lines than XF despite being much shorter, but not having big SPRG maps obviously counts for a lot there.
-Once we adjust the numbers for the higher totals, most of my predictions were basically spot on: Nanami #1 at roughly 10% of the total, Viktor/Jowy/Shu follow (though Shu didn't end up close to the other two), Flik/Apple after them, nobody else over 200... except...
-Yeah, my big miss was Riou, who was in #4 until Shu's late charge. Did you know he gets like four times the dialog prompts Tir did? I had no idea. For me this was revealing because it drove home how little I care about these sorts of dialog options, which is probably why silent mains just don't click with me.
-Also on the note of Riou, it really should be noted that this analysis overrates the actual total volume of text he has, since his average dialog snippet contains fewer words than those of other characters (usually taking up only one line on the screen). Same with Tir.
-The other characters who surprised me a bit were Fitcher and Alex, who definitely are more talkative than they are memorable.
-Viktor has 881 lines total between the two games, easily beating out Nanami's 700 for most total lines by any character in the series so far. With how S3 and S5 distribute their line total, I have a hard time imagining any other character displacing Viktor for this title within the series.
-Other notable combined totals are Flik's 475 (#4 total so far), Gremio's 304 (#7), Apple's 241 (#9), and Cleo's 214 (#10).
-Most characters who appear in both S1 and S2 have more lines in S2 (if they are a star of destiny in S2, at least), though there are a few exceptions: Tai Ho, Humphrey, Kasumi, Valeria, Max, and Vincent. Stallion has 11 lines in both games.
-And as Sopko observed, a couple non-stars in S2 have more lines than they did as stars in S1 (Grenseal and Leon Silverburg).

If anything i’d Say Tir had a stronger character than Riou, albeit that’s probably intentional to some degree (Riou’s thing is being torn between the much stronger personalities of Nanami and Jowy). Although part of that is also that Riou was much more overtly a figurehead while Tir was generally shown deference by his supporting cast.

I have started Suikoden 3 (intending to do Hugo's chapter 4-5 since they seem the most canon, but I'll probably use YouTube to add the Chris True Water scene at least), so here are my early predictions!

-This game is gonna be long. 9000 lines is my guess. We've got 14 chapters and each one averaging 600-700 lines sounds right off the top of my head.
-Hugo, Chris, Geddoe, Thomas, Ace, and Sgt. Joe have the most lines, in some order. Hugo and Chris at the top most likely. I doubt either reaches Nanami, but 500+ is certainly in reach. The rest of the picks here are pretty obvious, main characters are almost always on screen and actually talk without prompting in this game (although the game certainly has its share of prompts!). Joe is ever-present in Hugo's arc (in contrast with say Chris's supporting cast, which is constantly changing) and Ace is super-chatty in Geddoe's, I will not be surprised if he has more lines than Geddoe even. The top ten will probably be rounded out by some combination of Queen, Joker, Luc, Sarah, Cecile, and Nash. I'm leery about picking Salome, Lucia, Caesar, or Apple for this, as they're the exact type of characters I've kneejerk overestimated in the past.

Suikoden 3 is less linear than the previous games, and the line count will vary based on which main recruits which characters. I'm following Dan Crenshaw's guide on GameFAQs for who to recruit when, with two exceptions: I recruited Sanae with Hugo (by accident) and Kenji with Chris (since he never showed up in Thomas's chapter for me).

Final thoughts on Suikoden 3:
-Whoever is Flame Champion gets a bunch of extra lines in Chapters 4-5 (and a couple in Luc's chapter). I estimated what Chris and Geddoe would have as Flame Champion by replacing their figures for Chapter 4-5 with Hugo's; should be a rough approximation anyway.
-I predicted Suikoden 3 would end up around 9000 lines, and was indeed pretty close. The top six was almost what I thought, but I overestimated Geddoe and underestimated Luc a bit. For the rest of the top ten, I missed Salome and Caesar, ironically slightly underestimating strategist-type characters for once! They still have far fewer lines than Shu (and a lower percentage of their game than Mathiu) though.
-Unshockingly Hugo and Chris feel kinda like co-mains, with Chris being the slightly chattier one of the two by default. Geddoe is far quieter and his cast is more of an ensemble, for all that Ace is obviously the party chatterbox. Thomas and Luc also make the most of their time as mains to build up pretty crazy totals considering they don't have too many lines elsewhere (except Chapter 5 in Luc's case).
-Even excluding his own chapter, Luc had the most lines of any "pure" antagonist in the series. (If you include his own chapter, he's not exactly a pure antagonist any more.)
-Beecham, Jeane, Lilly, Luc, Lucia, Sasarai, Tuta, Viki, and Yuber appear in multiple games, and have more lines in Suikoden 3 than any previous.
-Having said that, Jeane's 6 lines in this game (SOMEHOW more than Suikoden 1 or 2!) put her bottom four for human stars of destiny in this game. She only has 11 lines through three games!
-On the other hand, Futch and the Star Dragon Sword appear in three games and have fewer lines in Suikoden 3 than any other. Apple also appears in three games and her line totals go S2 > S3 > S1.

So I've decided I enjoy this data gathering enough that I'll probably do quite a few more games, so I'm now renaming this thread to be a general line counting thread.

My newest project is also my new recent object of gushing, Fire Emblem: Three Houses! This is gonna get complicated.

The game has a lot of lines from different sources:
1. Lines from cutscenes
2. Lines from talking to characters in the monastery
3. Lines from battles
4. Lines from supports (as well as Goddess Tower scenes and character S-rank endings)

For now, I'll not be counting supports; Luther Lansfeld has taken on that task. I'll be focusing on cutscene lines, monastery lines, and battle lines. Note that I will not necessarily get all boss conversations, but I'll try to get some, provided the character is one native to the route I'm doing. Expect a little error margin on these, though.

I will not be getting comment box lines, dialog from repeatable monastery functions or RNG-related events (training, group tasks gifts/lost items, failed recruitment attempts, meals, choir, comment box, group tasks, monthly questions, goal suggestions, etc.). I am also not getting lines which are not reliably tied to a chapter (i.e. for recritment scenes, I'm only getting Sylvain in Chapter 2, plus staff members at their earliest availability).

The route split makes things even tougher. For now, I'm gathering data for Black Eagles -> Crimson Flower, but if I'm feeling brave I'll try to detiail which lines are unique to each route at a later date and avoid doublecounting.

I do count Byleth's dialog options (as per Suikoden's silent mains, these are much shorter than the average dialog line, so Byleth will be overcounted for words in this analysis), and I do count dialog in videos by number of visible subtitles (these lines are quite short on average).

I'll list lines by chapter. Paralogues will be listed separately, later.

Edelgard had the most lines in 14 out of 19 chapters. The other characters to lead a chapter were Byleth, Catherine, Rhea, Sothis, and Alois/Jeralt (tied).


Thoughts:

-Not really news, but the lords are really damn important to the game, Edelgard is more dominant than any other character has been in these analyses so far, considering her own route. I imagine Dimitri and especially Claude will be similar in theirs; I expect Claude will have over 1000 lines.
-To editorialize a bit, I think it generally does a game a service if the main antagonist also has a lot of lines, and obviously this route of Three Houses delivers here; when you consider that Byleth's lines are way shorter than everyone else's and thus s/he is overcounted by this analysis, Edelgard and Rhea finish #1 and #2 and I can't help but feel that's a good thing.
-Interesting to see how Hubert gets way more lines in the second half as well, really drives home how he's not in his element during (as he puts it) "play at school", but becomes a major plot mover during the war phase. And also how he opens up once Byleth has proven worthy of his trust.
-People who are about to die have lots of lines as always. Unless they're a minor villain.
-Speaking of which, the game really doesn't care about those who slither in the dark, does it? Solon has the most and over half of that is just a slow buildup of monastery lines while he's disguised. They're not gonna do any better on any other route.

For Blue Lions Part 1 I counted up all of the dialogue that doesn’t already appear in Black Eagles Part 1, since that was already counted. There’s a lot of overlap, of course, aside from the lord’s massive amounts of dialogue and the extra chip-ins from the BL students. Some of the monastery dialogues are different (Ashe has three extra lines in his monastery dialogue after Lonato’s death, for example). Byleth has unique interactions with the lord so she is counted as well.

Taking a break from FE (VW and SS will come in time), and returning to that other well-known classic war story, Suikoden 4! You are all excited now.

I haven't played this game in 15 years and my memory for it is not great, so I assume my predictions will suck! Let's try anyway

-Probably around 5000 lines? More than 1, but well less than 2.
-I kinda think Elenor has the most lines just because no other notable plot player is present throughout the game, and I imagine she'll manage something similar to Mathiu. Could also see Lino winning, he's around a bit longer.
-Rest of the top ten... oh hell. Lazlo, Snowe, Kika, Glen, Chiepoo, Ramada... Desmond? Graham Cray? Let's go with that, though it's possible some randoms around a lot like Sigurd/Hervey or the ninjas will quietly put up a decent total. I just don't remember well enough to say.
-I'm not sure how I'll handle Paula/Tal/Jewel/Keneth.
