C25K for DLers (run, run, run!)
« on: August 29, 2010, 02:50:18 AM »
Soooo... to sum up a series of "god I've gotten fat again" conversations I've had, super, Ciato and I agreed we'd try this running program I've enjoyed in the past. Not all of us are going to be running the program, but I sure am!

The program, for those who don't know: Couch to 5K. Go from no regular exercise to running a 5k (a little over 3 miles) in 9 weeks. More details here: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

I'm planning on getting started on Wednesday, September 1, but I'm planning on repeating Week 1. I think we'll officially get started September 6. I will be posting my progress on this thread because I enjoy public humiliation need accountability.

So!

Who wants in?

Starting with walking. Going with 4 miles in an hour as my start, and going to try and slowly mix in longer distances/jogging as I get in better shape. I'll also be posting and bleeding in here.

Since I'm lucky enough to have a treadmill at work, I've taken to giving that a shot after hours most days for the past three weeks or so.  Started with an out-of-shape 9 & a half minute mile, down to an 8 minute mile (in which I feel I could have done faster if I'd gone all out) on Friday.  I did a mile in 6 minutes and 20 back in high school, so there's still a way to go.  Still, that was only ~10 minutes of exercise.  I'll try and give a 5K a shot sometime next week - 32 minutes will be my humiliation time to beat.

Hey, that's actually interesting. I might join in. September 6th, you said? That's just when my school's introductory camp begins, so I probably will need to start later if I want to do this. Can't really take the time for a jog during camps as those. :V

I've been running on my treadmill at work for the past couple days now, so I might as well try this shin dig out.

Yeah.  Why not.  I need the exercise now that I don't ride my bike to get everywhere nowadays.

Ew, not in my climate.  The heat index was over 110 every day last week.

Hmm.  On one hand, I could use the exercise and maybe if I had other people more or less shaming me into actually doing it I might actually stick to a schedule.  On the other hand I've got a weak knee and I don't know how well it would hold up under a running schedule.  I guess I could start and then use the knee as a convenient excuse dial it back if it becomes a problem.

3.3 miles in 57 minutes for walking. Got some work to do, clearly.

If I were living somewhere flat I'd probably join in. Buuuut I don't have the balance to jog or run on these hills without falling down. I'll just stick to my walking, I suppose.

Excuses excuses excuses.

Too hot in your area?  Run in the evening or early morning.  Bad terrain?   If there's a high school nearby, I almost guarantee there will be some sort of track nearby.  Bad knee?  Well okay fair enough.  There's probably a gym or Yeemcuh nearby with elliptical machines but that'll cost money.

Also, I want to reiterate: though I am following the C25K program, and that's what initially got this going, you don't have to run it to follow along. If you'd rather swim, or walk, or bike, or use your WiiFit, you're more than welcome!

I created this thread because I love the C25K training program and I think it's a terrific way to get moderately unfit people into regular running and exercise. The gradually increasing intervals are what really makes this for me -- I didn't expect I'd be able to make it to running for a full 30 minutes without stopping, but that's what the schedule said, so I did. I never would have pushed myself otherwise.

I'd love to have other people run C25K with me, but I'm happy suffering along with people who are just plain exercising, too. I can re-title the thread accordingly if it would make people feel better. :P

I'd consider joining in but...losing weight is not exactly a priority of mine, if you haven't noticed <.<;

Granted, gaining some cardiovascular strength or whatever wouldn't hurt.

Eh, it's fine. I was mostly just posting to note that it sounds like it could be fun, but would be more effort then I'm willing to put in to get to a place where I could do it(closest school with a track I know of is two miles away. Straight downhill, which would make the return trip some kind of not fun at all). I walk 3 miles every weekday anyway, have been doing such for a couple years now, and will continue to do so.

Though this reminds me of the DS Walking Coach thing a freind of mine was talking about last year. Comes with a pedometer, and you just carry it around to see just how far you walk, then sends the information back to the "game" where you've set goals and such for yourself. I don't remember most of the details, but I remember thinking it was interesting when I heard about it.

mmm, sure, I might as well tag along here, although for me it'll be walking + arm weights + situp reps.

Long ago I discovered I have two relative move speeds: walk and sprint. >_>

Losing weight isn't the only point of making yourself healthier. Just because you are underweight doesn't mean you are healthy, especially if you don't regularly exercise.

Too hot in your area?  Run in the evening or early morning.

Yeah, you're from New Mexico, right?  We have this marvelous invention called humidity here.  Morning is even worse than during the day, and... we don't really have evening here.  Stays hot even after the sun goes down.

Running season here ends in April with a big marathon by the beach.  And even that was too hot this year - a lot of people got heat stroke this year during it.

I guess I could bust out the Wii sports though.  Need to work on my bowling game for DLCon.

Well, yes, but...

A. I'm not underweight by any definition of the word, apparently (though, I am slim)

B. The nature of my job involves me getting a lot of exercise as is (a lot of lifting and walking)

So yeah, I probably should have elaborated more.

Well, yeah, if you're getting regular exercise, this isn't for you.

I might give it a shot once fall happens.

Mmm. I do need to get back into running. I've neglected it this summer. Never timed myself, but I was running roughly 2 miles a day with time constraints (I decided to fit it in).

Now I'll decide to fit it in again. I'll start of with 2 miles a day again. I won't start any lower.  . . . .  But I probably won't mention working out again on the boards, so yeah. Just know I'm running.

I get enough walking just moving from place to place downtown from work to lunch and to my car.  Plus its been 90 degrees for about 2 months straight and I know it's going to be another bitter cold winter.  I actually need to work on more upper body strength than cardio.

The only way I see Captain K running is chasing kids off his lawn.

*runs, returns*

Out of shape compared to where I was before coming to the 4th fattest state (WE WILL OVERTAKE YOU, KENTUCKY!!!), but can still run/jog 5 miles in < 1 hour.  I'm there cardio-wise (hopefully I'll keep up with it every day, now >_>), but will definitely do some upper body strengthening.

Decided to gauge where I should be running according to this because weeks 1-3 sounded boring.

Looks like I'm at week 4 abouts.
