General Chat / Long time no see
« on: February 06, 2019, 12:47:53 AM »
Surprised to see everything still fairly active around here. Figured I'd start something new to say hey and catch up rather than derail an existing thread.

General Chat / Letter of Resignation
« on: August 30, 2011, 02:10:20 AM »
Given the tone and content of the reaction to my recent rule regarding the content of chat, it's become clear that the DL as a whole does not agree with my views on what is appropriate and inappropriate, and is not willing to change or doesn't care enough to make it an issue either way.

This is fine; you certainly have the right to hold a different view than I do.

By the same token, I have the right to hold my views. Since I find the current content of the chat unacceptable by those views, I choose to remove myself from it, and as I don't participate much with the site itself aside from hosting it, from the DL as a whole. Effective immediately, I will no longer be performing any type of administrative or programming work for the RPGDL.

In addition, the site as currently hosted will be shut down in two weeks. This is the same notice that would be expected by any employer; this should give the group time to find a replacement, who's welcome to contact me for site backups and domain transfer to new hosting - I'm not going to hold the site hostage, but neither am I going to continue running it out of simple inertia. If this two week period passes without a new web admin, the site will be taken down and backups made that will be provided when the new admin is ready to use them.

This is not something I intend to change my mind about; I've had ample time to consider this decision. While there will be people here that I'll miss, I have neither the time nor the energy to enforce a decision that it's clear the majority doesn't support.

I wish you the best.

Discussion / DLC6: Games and Activities!
« on: March 05, 2011, 08:04:10 PM »
This is just throwing out some ideas for things that will be nearby/available as activities, as well as coordinating games/consoles/etc that will be coming in for the con.

Since most of the con will be taking place at my apartment, we'll have my gaming setup (42" LCD HDTV w/PS3, Wii, PS2 hooked up currently) for console games; we may need an Xbox as well. I also have a second smallish HDTV (24") that I use as a secondary monitor; this can be hooked up to a second console or consoles if we want a second gaming station.

For games of the group variety:

PS3:

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (Hal)

Wii:

Super Smash Bros Melee (Hal)
Super Smash Bros Brawl (Hal)
Mario Kart: Double Dash (Hal)
Mario Kart: Wii (Hal)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Hal)
Other fighting games (Cap'n)

360 (Cap'n)
Fighting games for 360 (Cap'n)

Board/card games:

Arkham Horror (includes Dunwich, Kingsport, and Innsmouth expansions)  (Hal)
Betrayal at House on the Hill (Hal)
Gloom (Hal)
Settlers of Catan (Yakumo)
Apples to Apples (Cap'n)

For local activities:

Schlitterbahn (waterpark, for early arrivals)
Gamefellas (local used game store)
Alamo Drafthouse (bistro+movie theater, dunno if there will be any movies worth seeing at DLC6 time though)
Rudy's (technically not an attraction, but everyone in the world seems to want to go so)
Arcade UFO

It'd be nice to get an idea of what - particularly in the way of local activities not at the apartment - people are interested in, since we can possibly get some early planning in for how many cars will be needed for trips and when we can fit stuff in. Also, if you have games to bring, post them and we can get a list of what'll be here and what folks are interested in.

RPGDL Discussion / DL Wordpress: Now What?
« on: February 19, 2011, 01:23:59 AM »
So we have a WordPress installed, with the theme everyone wanted. Now comes the next stage of customization: deciding on look and feel.

There are several things that will need to be decided with the new WP arrangement; getting these sorted out soon would be wise.

1. Site subtitle. This is the "Just another WordPress site" tagline that appears with the title. When deciding on this, bear in mind that this is starting to shift the emphasis of the site; we may even want to consider changing the site's name from the RPG Duelling League to something else (like Data Library). Not saying what should or shouldn't be done, just something to keep in mind.

2. Blogroll. The title can be changed, but this is a list of links that will appear on the sidebar. It's best to keep one around, but the question is "what sites are we linking?" We can link member-affiliated sites such as gensokyo.org or Tide's blog, or we can link to more utilitarian sites such as GameFAQs. Coming up with specific links is only part of this question; the other part is "what's our justification for having links/what makes them important to link?"

3. Site widgets. These are the side subsections like the Blogroll or Meta sections (Meta will be going away soonish). There are a bunch of standard widgets, such as a calendar to show when posts have taken place, a category tree for searching posts, a longer-range calendar to show posts from a particular month, etc. There are also custom widgets that can be added, such as a poll widget (see gensokyo.org main page for some examples); you can browse through http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tags/widget to get an idea of what's available. Adding new widgets isn't hard, but it's best not to clutter up the site with a bunch of 'shiny'-looking stuff unless you think it'll actually see use.

For this overall, we'll need to consider what widgets we want to display, and whether we want to add anything to the standard set.

4. Site graphics. The overall header graphic and the widget headers use a custom graphic (the 'sunrise over Earth'-looking thing); we can change these to use our own graphics, but in order to do so we'll obviously need graphics to use. Deciding on whether to change these and what to change them to is also a need.

5. Post content. There's been some work on this in other topics, but you'll need to decide on what posts will contain (such as reviews, news about stat topic updates, whatever you think is important/valuable for people to know about) and get people ready/willing to write those posts.

-----

The answers to the first four questions will probably need my input/help in implementing, as currently I'm the only administrator on the WordPress (and thus the only person who can make changes to the look and feel of the overall blog). Number 5 is purely up to you guys; the only thing you'll need me for is to set up the folks who will be the editors, and thus have the ability to approve or reject post content from the folks actually writing it.

With that said, let's get some questions settled.

Discussion / DLCon Texas Prologue: Schlitterbahn?
« on: December 18, 2010, 11:51:48 PM »
Floating (har) the idea out there for interested parties. About an hour's drive south of Austin is one of the best waterparks in the country, called Schlitterbahn. Given that we'll be in the perfect time of year to enjoy such a thing (and it's closer than any other theme park), would folks/how many folks be interested in possibly arriving a couple of days early to head down for a day?

The park is very busy on weekends so trying to do a trip during the con itself would be a bad idea to say the least, but if folks were to arrive Tuesday we could take a group down on Wednesday and spend a day at the park before the rest of the group starts arriving on Thursday.

This isn't a definite "yes we're doing this" at this point, just trying to gauge interest for now.

MORE INFO: Tickets are $36 discounted at the local grocery. Would be best to set aside $5 for gas for your driver (whoever that would be), and another $5-10 for food - usually the best idea is to take a big cooler full of sodas/cold cuts/chips, then do a picnic-style lunch rather than buy food on-site. You're looking at around $50 total for the trip (not counting souvenirs if that's your bag), plus tacking on a couple of extra days for housing/food expenses in Austin.

Discussion / DLCon the 6th: Texas, Take Two
« on: December 12, 2010, 12:04:30 AM »
Okay. Been long enough and since I'm not sure at this point when the forum move is going to be completed, I should go ahead and get this started.

The current plan for DLCon 6 is to host it in Austin again, currently towards the end of June - the weekend of 6/23-6/26.

After looking at rental house prices and checking my apartment for usable space, the plan is to run the con activities out of my apartment, while the attendees stay at a hotel about 2 miles from my place. The hotel I'm looking at is here:

http://www.lq.com/lq/properties/propertyProfile.do?ident=LQ6338&propId=6338

As the usual, this is the topic for posting if you're coming. I intend to check with the hotel to see if any kind of group rate is available given the number of people we have coming, although I don't have any info in that regard just yet.

Ye Grande List of Attendees:

Confirmed:
Hal - apartment
Alex - his house
Snow - Hal's
Grefter - Hal's
Taishyr
Sopko
Gate
Cmdr
Tallychu
Yakko

OK (+car)
Meeple
Cap'n K (+car)
NEB

Writeups / Writeup length checker.
« on: January 11, 2010, 11:34:24 PM »
Very simple to use. In your browser, right-click on your bookmarks toolbar and choose the New Bookmark option (this was tested under Firefox 3.5, but should also work in Safari - not sure about IE). Name it whatever you'd like, then for the location paste in the following code:

Code: [Select]
javascript:window.alert("Selection size is "+document.getSelection().length+" characters.");
In Internet Explorer, use this code instead (same steps apply):

Code: [Select]
javascript:window.alert("Selection length is "+document.selection.createRange().text.length+" characters.");
Save the bookmark.

To use, simply highlight the entire writeup you're checking (note that this only applies to a posted writeup, not the text entry box for a new post), then click on the bookmark in the toolbar. A window will pop up giving the length of the highlighted area.

I leave it to you folks to determine how many characters is appropriate for a writeup.

RPGDL Policy Discussion / Should the Main Tournament Shut Down?
« on: January 08, 2010, 08:06:46 PM »
As the site's writers burn out, the topic comes up. The DL as a tournament has been running for close to ten years now, and a lot of seasons have come and gone. With voter turnout being low (and with little sign of improvement), the JRPG genre as a whole approaching a low, and the focus of the DL's main group turning to other games, do we really need to continue running the main site tournament?

Personally, as someone that's followed the group but hasn't voted in more seasons than I can count, I don't really see a great deal of point in keeping things running. Trying to maintain voting rights is an increasingly herculean task as the number of ranked games increases, and the site's writers are getting rather burned out as a relative few carry a great deal of the workload.

Personally, I don't see there being much of a draw to the site from the tourney itself anymore - it seems like something that's done simply for the sake of tradition, because it's what we've always done. While I don't propose that the site be reduced to nothing more than the forums and the chatroom, I do think that dropping the tournament out of the site's focus can't help but be a positive impact in the long run - there's no more pressure on keeping up with writeups, trying to make things interesting. The focus of the site could shift - perhaps the new RPGDL could be the RPG Data Library, with the stat topics taking on new significance and importance. Perhaps the focus could go elsewhere.

That's where everyone's opinions come into play. Is the tourney important to you at this point? Is it necessary to keep running it? If so, what do you see as the advantages? If not, what could we focus on instead?

We're all opinionated around here, so let's get some ideas flowing. =)

General Chat / Updating the Evil Overlord of the DL
« on: December 26, 2008, 03:49:09 PM »
No, this isn't a topic about deposing Super. I've been thinking for a while about getting Hatbot's stock of replies updated, and due to lack of time I figured I could open it up to suggestions. There are several different types of responses he's got:

 - Answers: these are replies to the standard "Hatbot, x?" type of question. Unabashedly stolen from a list of magic 8-ball responses; new stuff is welcome, although I can't see expanding this too much. <nick> refers to the person asking the question.

"I'd tend to think so, <nick>.",
"Yes, <nick>.",
"I'm not sure. Can you repeat the question, <nick>?",
"Without a doubt, <nick>.",
"I tend to doubt it, <nick>.",
"As I see it, yes, <nick>.",
"I'd count on it, <nick>.",
"I'm not sure. What do you mean, <nick>?",
"I can answer that, <nick>, but are you sure you really want to know?",
"It is decidedly so, <nick>.",
"I don't think you want to know, <nick>.",
"Very doubtful, <nick>.",
"Most certainly, <nick>.",
"Absolutely, <nick>.",
"I have a headache. Ask me later, <nick>.",
"Most likely, <nick>.",
"Not right now, <nick>. Can it wait until later?",
"My reply is no, <nick>.",
"I think so, <nick>.",
"Don't count on it, <nick>.",

 - Replies: These come up when you simply say something to Hatbot, i.e. "Hatbot, x."

"I couldn't agree more, <nick>.",
"Whose stash did you raid, <nick>?",
"If you say so, <nick>.",
"You've got to be kidding, <nick>!",
"Are you sure, <nick>?",
"That's just plain impossible, <nick>!",
"You never spoke a truer word, <nick>.",
"Where did you come up with THAT gem, <nick>?",
"I'm thinking trained dolphins, <nick>. Lots of them.",
"Pfft, as if I care.",
"And on an unrelated note, you won't shut up, <nick>.",
"I see. And how does that make you feel about your mother, <nick>?",
"Uh-huh. Does this dress make me look fat, <nick>?",
"Well, I'll get right on that, <nick>. Tomorrow.",

 - 6 W's. Questions containing the words "who", "what", "when", "where", "why", and "how" all have their own individual set of responses.

Who: (<random> indicates a random person currently in the chat)

"It's definitely <random>, <nick>.",
"I'm not sure, but I think you're referring to <random>, <nick>.",
"Wasn't that <random>, <nick>?",
"You may be talking about <random>, <nick>. I'd talk to them privately about that.",

What:

"42.",
"Huh? Were you talking to me, <nick>?",
"The answer is blowing in the wind.",
"I can give you an answer, but I don't think you really understand the question, <nick>.",
"Personally, <nick>, I wouldn't have made my father wear the wedding dress, even if I DID win the... Wait, what was the question?",
"If I were you, <nick>, I'd start asking better questions. Things like, \"Who got to my breakfast first?\" along with \"How much am I willing to pay for the antidote?\"",

When:

"On Decemberweenmas, of course!",
"I think that's next Saturday, <nick>.",
"In precisely <random time>.",
"Do you really think you should be asking me that right now, <nick>?",
"That happened yesterday, <nick>. Get with the times.",
"The world will come to an end first, <nick>. Count on it.",
"Time is but an illusion, <nick>. Teatime doubly so.",
"Hmm. I'd have to say NOW NOW NOW NOW DO IT NOW WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR, <nick>?!",

Where:

"Somewhere on GameFAQs. Try the FFTSB, <nick>.",
"Behind the sofa. I think. You look first, <nick>.",
"In the back of the fridge. Watch out for the baked beans, <nick>, I could have sworn they were moving earlier.",
"The far side of Mars. No, really, I'm serious, <nick>!",
"I don't know. Why don't YOU answer the questons for a change, <nick>?!",

Why:

 "Because.",
"The earth exerts a gravitational force of 9.8 m/(s^2), which in turn accelerates any object... wait, what was the question again?",
"Why indeed?",
"Why not?",
"I don't think you could comprehend the answer to that, <nick>.",
"Because I said so, <nick>, and I know better than you. (Which isn't saying much...)",
"That's what it says right here, <nick>.",
"You know what, <nick>? Bored now.",

How:

"How am I supposed to know? I'm just a shoddily constructed program, and you expect me to know that, <nick>?",
"I don't do science questions, <nick>.",
"That answer still lies beyond the ken of mankind, <nick>.",
"I could tell you that, <nick>, but then I'd have to kill you.",
"The key element is a spoon, <nick>.",
"You're asking me, <nick>? You really must be desperate.",
"Ask me when I care, <nick>.",
"You know, <nick>, when I was your age we didn't HAVE problems like that.",
"Just give up, <nick>. Just give up.",

If you've got any ideas or suggestions to add, feel free to toss them in; if not, feel free to wonder what the hell I was on when I first put the bot together and move on.

Announcements / A few rules and regulations...
« on: December 18, 2007, 02:00:30 PM »
Okay, just to keep things from getting too disordered, I'm going to lay down a few ground rules - mainly about avatars and signatures. Hopefully these won't ever become an issue, but better to make things clear now.

NEW: Forum Display Names

With the new forum software, forum names can be changed at will. I'm leaving this option enabled for now, so have fun. Same rules as IRC apply though - no intentional impersonation.

Size limits

Avatars:

For avatars, the set limit is 128x128 pixels. From this point forward, any avatar pic larger than 128x128 will be resized to fit that specification when it's changed, so hopefully this shouldn't be an issue. No avatar larger than 128x128 can be uploaded, either.

Signatures:

Text signatures should be no more than six (6) full-size lines. You're welcome to have more than that, but please drop the text size using [size=x][/size] tags. 9 is recommended for small type.

Graphic signatures should be no more than 125 pixels high by 650 pixels wide. Not to be an ogre about this, but the idea is for your signature not to take up half your post or more.

If you combine text and graphics in your sig, use common sense. You can't take 6 lines of text AND a full-size graphical sig, but I'll leave it up to you to figure out how you want to balance the two.  If you want help making a fancy combination of text and graphics, by all means - post and ask for help, there are enough people around with the knowhow to get you what you want.

Avatar/sig content

I don't anticipate this being a problem, but under no circumstances will hentai or pornographic images be allowed in sigs or avatars, or uploaded to the avatar hosting space. There will be no second chances on this one - consider this your warning in advance. This violates the terms of our hosting contract, which is why there will be zero tolerance here.

For offensive text content, no hard swearing in a sig. Warnings WILL be given here, but basically if it's strong enough for them to censor it on TV, it doesn't belong in your custom rank or signature. You're welcome to use whatever language you like in your post itself, but we don't need to see it in every single one of your posts.

Post content

You're welcome to post any opinion you like here. You're also quite welcome to think that anyone else's opinion is bloody stupid. However, keep any negative comments limited to people's ideas, not the people themselves - no ad hominem attacks, please.

As far as language goes, keep it relatively civil. We're not going to be sticklers about the use of 'adult language', but keep it within reason. If there are more swear words than not in your post, it probably needs to be rethought and stated a bit more politely.

If there are any questions, feel free to PM myself or any of the other moderators on the site for clarification.
