Forum Games / Steampunk Mafia (need 2 more~)
« on: August 15, 2012, 12:25:01 PM »
Alright, mentioned this in chat and I've spoken to a couple of people specifically, but...

I'm running this game on another forum, and I need a couple more players. It'll be anonymous accounts and pretty much any character is allowed, original or not. I can send out PMs here, so just let me know on here/in chat if you're interested in playing and a character of choice (and what they're from, if anything)

I'm looking to get this game started by the start of next week, but that relies on getting 2 more players, so let me know. Thanks. :)
(For reference, player list will be revealed at the start of the game, and there are a couple of DLers in there already. ;) )

Forum Games / Roleplay Mafia [Sign-Ups]
« on: August 30, 2011, 06:50:38 PM »
Since Rat's game isn't going ahead, guess I'll throw out signups for this! It'll be role madness, some slight Bastard Mod but nothing extreme (in other words, no completely random roles, no roles that are 100% useless, nothing that'll confuse things too much as far as night actions go, but possibly some hidden information in roles or some weird night actions.)

I'm not gonna limit you too much on character choice because, let's face it, I can't think of good themes. (Well, I could, but they've either been done already or I'm planning to run them elsewhere shortly after this game. :P)

Usual Mafia rules apply, so.. no talking outside of topic, no quoting mod, anon accounts, etc, etc. This game probably won't start until we've had a transfer on the hosting of the boards, so we've got a couple of weeks, at least. Looking for a minimum of 11 players, ideally looking for 15+.

Edit: Okay, let's have an actual rule list.
- Vote and unvote with ##Vote and ##Unvote
- Unvotes aren't necessary, just useful.
- Day One will be 72 hours. Every day from then on will be 48 hours.
- In case of a tie, there'll be a 2 hour Sudden Death, where anyone taking the lead on votes causes them to be lynched. If there's no decision at the end of this time, I'll roll it randomly.
- I'll try to stay on top of time/vote counts when I'm around, but if you want one, post ##Vote/Timecount (whichever applies, if not both)
- Do NOT edit posts.
- Do NOT quote anything from outside of the topic.
- Do NOT talk to other players. (This includes ones you think are dead!)
- Do NOT attempt to login to someone else's account.

Breaking any of the last four rules will result in a modkill. (The only exception to this is editing to fix grammar/typos, but that will still result in a warning the first time, followed by a modkill the next time. If you really need to add/correct something, post again to do it.)

Signups:

Godlike / Lugia (Poke) (Standardised Writeup)
« on: October 15, 2010, 10:54:48 AM »
Godlike's greatest flier returns to the arena this week, and Lugia holds an assortment of tricks within its talons. With both high durability and high speed, it's going to be difficult to soar through the bird, and Recover and Safeguard allow it to keep flying high! Not to say that Lugia can't wing it itself; Aeroblast and Hydro Pump give it powerful elemental attacks, and it can always opt for Swift if it needs to have eagle-eye accuracy, or Rain Dance if it wants to make that Hydro Pump even more powerful! Lugia's no featherweight - this bird's swooping in for the title of Godlike Champion!

Ha-HA! It's time for a TRUE HERO to step on to the scene! The valiant DEFENDER OF JUSTICE, FLAY, steps into the Duelling League, packing a huge range of attacks and strategies to defeat these VILLAINOUS FIENDS! Stepping in to the arena, Flay brings with him the ability to improve his firepower, and can also lower his foe's defence while attacking himself! So he may not be the fastest of characters, but Flay can easily earn himself a turn with solid durability, and with his stats increasing when his health falls, he can use that lower speed to his advantage! Yes, the Defender of Justice is ready to take the title and show everyone what a TRUE HERO fights like!

Writeup Graveyard / Meganium (vs. Adachi)
« on: May 21, 2010, 11:05:13 AM »
Only its second time in the arena and Meganium has made it to a much deserved final. Only Tohru Adachi stands between the Herb Pokemon and the Middle championship, and Meganium isn't going to back down at this stage. With Safeguard to prevent Adachi's Evil Smile from inflicting Fear, Meganium is free to set up a Light Screen, effectively negating any weakness it might have. From there, it's just a simple case of bringing Adachi down before he can take itdown, and with Synthesis' healing backing it up, it's clear that the Grass dinosaur is winning a slugfest! Throw in Adachi's lack of durability and Razor Leaf's high critical rate and it won't take long to bring down the sociopath and clinch the title!

Writeup Graveyard / Taro Namatame (vs. Celes Chere)
« on: April 30, 2010, 08:54:12 PM »
Namatame finally arrives in the Duelling League, and the delivery-man is looking to deliver a beating to the former Imperial general in this fight! Celes may be able to block his elemental damage, but he can essentially do the same to her with his Quad Converge skill, and she's got nothing that can stop him from draining her MP with Spirit Leech! Once she's unable to heal, she'll be left chipping away at his health, bringing him just into the setting he needs to deliver an Unerring Justice. This fight should be little trouble for Namatame on his way to the title of Godlike champion!

Writeup Graveyard / Cielo (vs. Philia Felice)
« on: April 29, 2010, 06:58:07 PM »
Cielo's back in the Duelling League, bringing back some jammin' Latin rhythm and looking for a title! His first opponent's the usual RPG-fare - a young girl, a talking weapon, some magic, no other tricks... Of course, for Cielo, it all means nothing for two very good reasons: most of her damage is Lightning, which Cielo conviently resists, and secondly, she has no status immunity whatsoever. Yes, Cielo has a nice choice in this match - the choice of status to hit her with! Sleep, Charm, or just go with the Death? Regardless of his choice, it's a simple win for Cielo, and the first of many in his path to the finals!

Discussion / Pokemon Double Battle~
« on: April 18, 2010, 09:33:52 PM »
Mentioned this one in chat, thought it'd be good to gather the ideas here.

Nationals tourn over here, and my first time entering one, figured I'd like to make a good start. Rules can be found here, and I'd recommend checking them over, since some are quite... odd. Particularly the part about banned/restricted Pokemon.

So, since Deoxys is banned, I'm thinking Choice Scarf Mewtwo makes a good choice, since it will, at worst, be equal speed to -another- Scarf'd Mewtwo. For the other Restricted Poke, looking at Specs Kyogre, because Water Spout doesn't hit ally and that is just obscene damage - to the extent that I'm considering bringing in a tank to use Fake Out/Follow Me so Kyogre can get two high-HP Water Spouts off for free.
Past that, Garchomp and Wobbuffet both seem like good choices, being unrestricted Ubers. Yachechomp is Yachechomp is tearing shit apart, and Wobbuffet is good for Mirror Coat against the Restricted Ubers and Encore tricks against the rest.

For the last two? They most likely won't be used unless Wobbuffet prove to be a common occurrence, but I'm leaning towards Choice Band Scizor w/U-Turn, Pursuit... the usual set, and Blissey w/Toxic to take care of enemy Wobbuffets and taaaaaank against the likes of enemy Kyogres/Mewtwos. That or, of course, the Follow Me/Fake Out thing I mentioned earlier.

Anyways, any thoughts'd be appreciated. Having gathered opinions in chat, it does seem like the best idea here is to go on an all-out offensive, so still undecided on Wobba, but that's what this topic's here to determine. ;)

Forum Games / VALIANT HERO Mafia! [World is Saved]
« on: February 13, 2010, 12:00:46 AM »
It was a good time for this gathering of BRAVE and TRUE HEROES. One of the most famous heroes of their age was set to make a big announcement, and they were all gathering for the event.
As they entered the hall, chattering (mostly VERY LOUDLY) amongst themselves, they were met with a frightful sight. Their guest 'announcer' was found, buried in a sea of kryptonite. With his last gasps, he turned to the crowd, uttering a single word.
"You."
But which? It was up to them to figure that one out. Turning to each other, a wave of suspicion ran through them. They were all heroes, and it was their job to save the day again.

Superman, Town NPC, has been killed!

Only two specific rules apply. I'll ask that everybody unvote before voting again - not necessary, just damn helpful.
Other rule applies to the times: Day One will be 72 hours, every subsequent day will be 48. Night Phases will be a maximum of 48 hours, after which time any night actions not received will just not be used that night.
Setup, as mentioned in the signup topic, contains roles, although few.

(Doing Science and) Still Alive:
1. Almaz von Almadine Adamant [Disgaea 3]
3. Batmanuel [The Tick]
7. Flay Gunnar [Mana Khemia]
8. Gordon [Disgaea]
9. Hazel [Watership Down]
10. Hilda Valentine [Shadow Hearts 3]
16. The Tick [The Tick]

Turned into a Crystal:
Day One - Prinny [Disgaea] (Mafia Silencer)
Night One - Saber [Fate/Stay Night] (Town Citizen)
Day Two - Captain Planet [Captain Planet] (Mafia Rolecop)
Night Two - Hiro [Snow Crash] (Town Citizen)
Day Three - The Middleman [The Middleman] (Town Citizen)
Day Four - Captain James T. Kirk [Star Trek] (Town Citizen)
Day Five - The Comedian [Watchmen] (Mafia Goon)
Night Five - Smax [Alan Moore's Top 10] (Town Doctor)
Day Six - Axel [Disgaea 2] (Mafia Goon)

72 hours remain. With 16 alive, it takes 9 votes to kill.
Personal note for tracking the time: Started at midnight.

Where is this Mitsuo finds himself now? A Duelling League? Yes, stepping out into the arena for the first time, Mitsuo looks to make a lasting impression, especially if that will make people like him. It's all just a game anyway, right? And his first boss appears to be susceptible to status! Yes, the Exhaustion of Bomb will help him greatly against Ness, and if Ness somehow musters the strength to bring him out of his shell, he can fall back on the combination of Evil Touch and Ghastly Wail - and that's just the status! With near-unblockable magic throughout, be it Megidola or Gigadyne, and a powerful physical, Mitsuo's here to prove he's the true hero! Maybe then someone will like him...

Forum Games / Hero Mafia! [Sign-Ups]
« on: February 08, 2010, 11:21:23 PM »
This game's gonna have some roles, not role madness but not completely vanilla. Nice normal game of Mafia (hopefully).
72 hours for Day 1, 48 for the rest. 24 hours for each Night. Not gonna ban WoTs, but try to keep them to a minimum.

I'll apologise in advance for the lack of characters on the list. Write-in is, of course, a perfectly valid option, so feel free to do that - I don't know half the characters on the list anyways, so it doesn't really matter.
As for what counts... Well, the ones I've chosen are either superheroes or are explicitly named as heroes at some point. If you can, stick to that. If you're not sure if a character counts, PM me a couple of choices or just ask me in chat or something.

1. Batman [God Damned.]
2. Superman [Preferably not the Smallville version, because Smallville.]
3. Spiderman [3rd movie version hype, amirite?]
4. Flay Gunnar [IS THE FLAY.]
5. The Tick [Spoooooon!]
6. Gordon [DEFENDER OF JUSTICE!]

7. Link [Good luck roleplaying this one.]
8. Slash [The musician. Spot the joke, win nothing.]
9. Green Lantern [...Green lightsaber? IS YODA?! *shot*]
10. Viewtiful Joe [Henshin-a-go-go, baby!]
11. Joachim Valentine [With his RIPPLING MUSCLES~!]
12. Wolverine [The best at what he does, etc, etc.]
13. Hiro [Heroes or Lunar, take your pick. I know neither.] (One of each is fine!)
14. Prinny [Can He Really Be The Hero?]
15. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles [Heroes in a half-shell! Turtle Power!]

Looking for about 11, can probably go with anything 9+, though. AnonyMafia, of course, so PM me to join.

Edit: 16 players to finish! <3

Writeup Graveyard / Ike (vs. Saki)
« on: January 14, 2010, 09:46:43 PM »
No challenge in sweeping his opponent in the first round, and now Ike finds himself with no decent challenge yet again! Saki is able to inflict Silence on him, preventing him from using spells? Ike doesn't even use magic, and he's still more than able to win. Average magic damage? Ike's magic resistance is better than most swordsmen around the Duelling League. No, Saki's only real hope lies in that boosted physical, and Ike is known throughout Tellius for his fearsome swordplay. If this match is coming down to a basic battle of strength, there's no way Ike can lose - especially considering he's going to be pulling out an Aether if Saki takes too long about it! And with his defences and her need to Energy Charge, she's almost certain to take too long. This is simply another small hurdle as Ike brings home another victory for the Greil Mercenaries.

RPG Reviews / Yoshi's Den
« on: December 26, 2009, 02:40:05 AM »
So, naturally, the first review I write isn't for an RPG. Ah, well. I'll probably review some other games soon, since I'm meant to be writing a load more at some point in the near future. ;o

Professor Layton and the Curious Village:
Got this today for Christmas, and was kinda disappointed to see that I'd got the first one, and not the (supposedly better) sequel, especially seeing as, as far as I know, the games stand alone quite well. Naturally, my initial stance of disappointment was very much a wrong one.

Gameplay: 8/10
I'll admit, I didn't know much about Layton coming into this game. I knew it was a puzzle game. I knew it apparently had a 'vibrant world', which left me thinking it would have bad characters (since I'd heard no mention of them). That was about it! Now, for those who don't know, the 'puzzle game' is mostly right, although it's also somewhat point-and-click, in the same sort of vein as Phoenix Wright's exploration side. While that might infuriate some, the map system works well enough to iron out the the PW system, and it's defintely a lot easier to work with. The actual puzzles themselves are initially quite fun and creative, although it doesn't take long for these puzzles to be reused - by the last sliding block puzzle, you'll probably be getting a little tired of them. By the end, there are still a fair few original puzzles, but it's gone from being 99% of them to about 50%. What is nice is that you can beat the main game with about two thirds of the puzzles complete, meaning you can ignore a specific puzzle type if you really hate it (or, alternatively, look up a solution.)
The thing is, it won't be long before you blitz past the puzzles anyway. This is my major complaint with this game - it's too short! I beat the entire game within a day (admittedly, playing it almost all day, but whatever), and that was playing 112/120 puzzles from the main story. The number of hint coins you pick up is ridiculous, to the point that I finished the game with about 50 and was using 3 per puzzle for most of the endgame puzzles. There are 2-3 in each area, if not more, and that's more than enough to get through with a far below average IQ, let alone that of the average gamer.

Character/Plot: 10/10.
Of course, I wouldn't have been playing it all day when I've got other games to finish if I didn't like the game, and this game had me hooked. The mysteries of the town are fascinating and, even if you figure out some, there are others that'll leave you confused from start to finish - for me, the last mystery you're introduced to (the 'secret of the town') was probably the first I figured out, whereas I didn't figure out the first one you're introduced to (the Golden Apple) until the game told me the answer. Thing is, the storyline does it brilliantly; even if you can figure out parts of the storyline, you keep playing to unravel the whole story and to see how things unfold. The characters, while simple, are fascinating enough to keep you enthralled, and the stories that develop are short yet sweet.

Sound: 8/10.
The music is generally what I consider "FFXII-like" in that it is amazing for the situation, but completely generic outside of it. The themes for the Tower and the villain, in particular, stand out as working brilliantly for the moment. Can I remember them now? Not a bit. Still, works for what it needs to.
However, the sound quality in this game doesn't lie in the music, but in the sound effects and voice acting. Minimal characters actually get voices, and those that do only get them at specific points, but they are fantastic. Luke, in particular, has an amazing voice, and Maria Gooding pulls off the curious kid perfectly. The sound effects are very much like Phoenix Wright again and, while a miniscule element from the outside, seriously add to the atmosphere and help absorb you into the world of the Curious Village.

Graphics: 7/10.
Honestly, I'm not one to care about graphics, unless they're particularly good/bad for the style. Layton's no exception here, with the art style being fun and really working with the characters' personalities, but being nothing exceptional.

Overall, Professor Layton and the Curious Village is pretty much what you'd expect from the adverts - just over 130 puzzles, mostly original with some repetition later on, and generally quite simple (with some major exceptions). However, the characters, storyline(s) and the wonderful setting for the game make it a real must-have for games fans and logical minds alike.
Overall Score: 9/10.

Writeup Graveyard / Mewtwo (vs Kyogre)
« on: December 12, 2009, 12:12:52 AM »
Hah! A goddess falls, and now Mewtwo faces a much more familiar foe, something hailing from his own world. Kyogre may look more fearsome than he, but Mewtwo knows which one holds the tide in this match, and it's not the legendary whale of doom. Kyogre's most fearsome attacks mean little in the face of Mewtwo's amazing Sp. Def, and any other damage from Kyogre will seem pitiful, thanks to the potent healing of Recover. Then, once Kyogre has thrown all that it can muster at Mewtwo, he can strike back with some powerful attacks of his own - his Psychic is terrifying at the best of times, and it's backed by the sheer brilliance of Amnesia, one of the best buffs in the Duelling League, not to mention Mewtwo's speed advantage. It looks like it's time for Kyogre to sink, making way for the true Godlike champion.

Forum Games / Fire Emblem (PoR/RD) Mafia
« on: November 03, 2009, 01:02:59 AM »
Alright, since there's not enough interest in the IdentiMafia, I figure I might as well run a normal Mafia game. :)

Basic Mafia with some roles, nothing too powerful. Not every player will have a role.
Standard Mafia rules apply, and will be posted in the game topic. All days will be 24 hours, with extensions available upon request. Extensions are pretty likely to happen with 24h days, but I'm not gonna sit around through 20 hours of silence while people cruise to the deadline unless stuff's actually happening.

Any playable from either game can be chosen, and roles/alignments will not be chosen by character (meaning roleplay is possible and preferable. ;-))

I'll draft up a list of possible roles shortly. Ideally looking for 11+ players, although can run with 7+.

1. Bobbin Cranbud [Naesala]
2. Magetastic [Tibarn]
3. Bardiche
4. Excal [Ike]
5.
6.
7.

Forum Games / Metal Gear Solid - IdentiMafia
« on: September 11, 2009, 05:32:54 PM »
This is, for the most part, like standard Mafia. The main differences are as follows:

There are three set teams in this: the Allies, Foxhound and Dead Cell. All have an equal number of players.

Initially, each player will know only their own alignment and all leaders. (Leaders' players are announced at the start. They cannot be killed until all other team members are dead.)
The leaders start as the only players given access to the team channels. Their roles are to choose a player and attempt to recruit them. If that player is on their team, then they will gain access to the team channel, which means they can find out who else has been confirmed for their team. (For those without access to chat, PM contact is permitted after recruitment, although chat access would be preferable.)
There may or may not be a 3rd-party (4th-party?) whose members can be recruited by any of the three teams.

Anyone on the team can kill, but they are unable to use another role if they choose to kill. Each team can only kill once per day, but they do not have to kill every day.

There will be a daily lynch decided by all players, not just the leaders. Once the lynch goes through (or the deadline is hit), the day ends and any role choices that have not been sent in will be unused for that day.
Each day will last for a maximum of 48 hours. If there is no lynch decided at the end of the 48 hours, then there will be no lynch on that day.

If people want to request to be a leader, please PM me to say so. Specific alignments and non-leader roles will not be available for request, but I figure some people will prefer having their role announced to begin with.

Current List:
1. Bobbin(g) Cranbud
2. Magetastic Anaconda
3. Voracious Nephrite
4. Miniature Bardiche
5. CPU-Hating Eagle
6. Malicious Xanth
7.
8.
9.
10.

Writeup Graveyard / Amarant Coral (vs. Mizuki~)
« on: September 05, 2009, 12:32:24 AM »
The Flaming Salamander is back to terrorise the ranks of the Duelling League once more, and his first opponent is... Hrm? Another thief? Tch, not like the ones Amarant's used to dealing with though, no. This one would prefer a weapon that he's much more familiar with himself. Still, despite their similarities, this fight shouldn't be any trouble at all - this ninja has a Wing Edge ready and waiting just for her, and the scarlet-haired mercenary won't hesitate to take her out. And if that somehow fails to finish her, he can back it up with his Chakra healing to draw the fight out. This Middle Championship is his, and he'll do whatever it takes to win it.
