Gauging of interest on music review thingey
« on: January 25, 2014, 07:56:49 AM »
EDIT: this is a thing that exists now:
http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/

So...last time I saw Ciato, she commented that the topic I did on country/pop/kpop lyrics had basically turned into a review topic for recent pop music, and that I should keep doing pop music reviews.

And...actually I did start writing about music regularly, just...not on the DL or public on the internet at all.  I started an email series pretty much just to a few family members as "Kaitlyn's song of the week"--which was generally chosen between music I had listened to in the past week, and generally limited to music that was new (came out within the past month usually--or at minimum I hadn't heard the piece before).  The "new" restriction was in part to force me out of my comfort zone, and get me not just pulling music out of a nostalgia hat.

So anyway, I figured my interest would wane pretty fast and I'd stop sending the emails, hence a pretty non-committal choice to hit a small audience (of like 8 people) but I've been doing these since August, and I haven't missed a week yet.  Not only that, I've had some successes where I predicted popular culture before it happened (I caught "The Fox" by Yvlis when it had 40k views, and predicted it would become a thing, picked it for the week #hipster).  And some failures too, of course.

But at any rate, I'm thinking about taking the "Kaitlyn's song of the week" series public.  Which is kind-of weird to me, since...while I know more about popular music than my 60-year-old parents, the internet has a way of making me feel dumb in music discussions.  Still, seems to be something I'm going to continue researching and writing about every week so...maybe it's worth-it?

Stuff I'm curious about:

1. Would the DL read these?
2. The super lazy way would be to just start copy/pasting my emails onto the forums.  The slightly less lazy way would be to make a sub-website like FE.php with some handy stuff like navigating by week and pretty layouts.  Which...really isn't very much additional work (and it'd be one-time work; once it was implemented, it would still be pretty much a copy/paste).
3. Assuming the marginally more ambitious plan, should I continue to solo it, or collaborate with others on the DL who, undoubtedly, have better musical taste than I do?

I am lazy and listen to radio stations in my long commutes in my car, so I spend an inordinate amount of time listening to pop music. As such, it's nice to see it dissected and talked about more seriously than "OMG, I would totes listen to this in da club!"

Hm, ok, well planning to go forward with this.  And...hmm...actually already have something Grefter (or whomever) can help me with.  I know if I like music or not, I know artists, but I'm not very good at identifying genres.  Like...when I give the rundown of the week, I'd like to say "And then this artist made an R&B song."  So like...help me categorize the genres of these songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc1RwpRfbT0
SPICA - you don't love me

(It's retro in some variety, but I'm having trouble nailing down what exactly it's imitating).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRNPkJ0ELPc
Within Temptation - The whole world is watching

(Within Temptation is classified as "Symphonic Metal", but this song is a bit far from the metal I'm used to)

(If people are curious, those two songs along with Krewella's Enjoy the Ride are the three I've been listening to the most so far this week, so...they're the front-runners and thus I'll probably write things about all three of them.  Still two more days to go, though).

As someone that immerses themselves in music, to be honest, you can completely get by without worrying about genre.  It is such a trivial piece of minutia at this point that is only really useful for describing it as like other things X that you either need to know the genre and what it sounds like to have a point of reference, at which point "it is like Band Y" is just as useful a description, person either knows band or doesn't care.  Like I could try to trick you into listening to some Mathcore based on its name but it would be a trap (unless you were interested in some incredibly technical guitar metal), where on the other hand if I recommend you some Nerdcore I think you might legit enjoy it because it is in fact exactly what it says on the tin.

Comparative examples JUST as useful if not more so than mentioning specific genre, if you want to use it to talk about other works someone has done, something fairly generic like "Country/Metal/R&B/EDM" should suffice.  Unless it is a significantly dramatic shift for the performer then most people will like the other track and noting that it is something a little different should suffice and if it IS a dramatic shift then the broad genre has got you covered (like that time The Residents an Avant Garde group did a completely straight Elvis cover album).

Also "it sounds like X" or you reaching for the genre yourself makes it more personal.

For these two examples though.

SPICA - You Don't Love Me.  It is still Pop.  It is taking really old pop and redoing it (female harmony vocals pretty much, stuff in that wheel house eventually became your Easy Listening stuff, but back in the day it was functionally Pop).  There is actually a similar group called The Pipettes from England that hit the same beats a while back, if you dug this I do recommend doing some diving into their short back catalogue, start  with these they are pretty fun in a Snow kind of way (Fab, camp and short).

Within Temptation - The whole world is watching.  This one is still metal, less specifically "Symphonic" other than the fact that it like, isn't dissonant or anything.  It is a Power Ballad and those always had clean vocals anyway, so whatevs.  I don't have big recommendation here other than like November Rain by Guns and Roses or something similar.  80s metal not very metal.
NO MORE POKEMON - Meeplelard.

Agree with Grefter, genres are useful as a quick cognitive shortcut but often get so ridiculously specific and so Byzantine as to stop being useful. Think of the microgenres they use for Netflix. Their specificity can tell you something but often they give you information that is not worth the deliberation it take to label it as such. That's how in music things can be labeled shit like "indie psychfolk chillwave," or the litany of genres that include "post" or "core." On the other hand, something like pirate metal is exactly as it sounds, so that does get its point across. Some of the weirder genre titles do become meaningful to people who have already heard them, but that's not advisable if writing for a general audience, even if it's just family or the DL.

Ok, well, it's not pretty yet, but all the weeks dating back to August 15 are up, and navigation exists...technically.

http://www.rpgdl.com/KSotW/index.php?week=20130815

I'll probably post this week's song in the morning.

If someone is adventurous enough to read through these all, please keep an eye out for stuff that seems like personal information I might put in an email which does not belong on the internet.

Week of 2013-08-29

You vaguely mention family names, but ymmv on care factor.

Also the song from that week is all kind of uncomfortable from being creepy rapey to creepy imperialist.

 Week of 2013-10-24

You mention stuff from weekend but isn't overly personal, so whatever.

Song is painfully overproduced and squeeky clean.

Couple of weeks earlier IU - Red Shoes.  That is legit quality track.

Week after is Gaga.  Want to buy acoustic album.  Until then still too wrapped up in club/dance trappings for me.  Don't feel as much need to costume is out of place for some reason?  Might just be tone is set.

Edit - I wasn't going to just comment on music unless there was something to post, but 노라조 (NORAZO) - 야생마 (Wild Horse) MV  was so fucking stupid and perfect that I needed to give it a nod.  10/10.  This is like nearly Dschingis Khan.  If you kicked up the BPM like 20% or something?  It would probably do it (As a dance track instead of disco).

Edit 2000 - As above so below, but you and your mother collectively picking Lilly Allen is glorious.  Of course her film clip is difficult though, that is what she does and she does it oh so very very well (Fuck You was a greeeaaaaaaat track).

Edit bajillion - I must know the response to this good dubstep track (It is a good track, well chosen).

The dubstep track is one of the few weeks where I got absolutely no response, actually.

Yeah, most of the places I spotted, I just edited the names out and replaced with "my brother in law" or whatever but it was too hard to edit that one without completely changing the meaning.  (And yes, obviously the song was picked not so much for being quality, but for the massive number of coincidences).

Yeah...not going to lie, as I was going back through these I was like "welp, that's the one, that's the worst song I've uploaded."

Yeah, there have been some brilliantly funny videos out of korea.  Like this, which came very close to winning against some rather good song:

And the courtesy seating video, which I can't find at the moment.

I was pretty happy about that one.  I had been kind of assuming she wouldn't like it due to there being lots of swearing and worrying about the grandkids, but she actually loved it and insisted on it.

Well, my initial notes on this week so far.

A = great candidate to share

B = I've listened to it on repeat a bunch

C = I've listened to it once, thought it had potential (some stuff I listen to once I don't bother saving)

D = I actually didn't finish it when I started listening to it (which is a pretty bad sign) but I had some reason for keeping notes on it anyway (almost anything where I turn it off before finishing, I just assume can't be that good).

Rico Love: Mmm...not really feeling it.

Yes.  Definitely falls in the category of predating the series (it's about a year old).  I did give some semi-serious consideration to one of their newer songs (Of the Night):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCTDKLjdok4&noredirect=1

Not sure if I mentioned it in the writeup or not; I think I picked that one up around the time I was like "OMG, the Brittish charts have some really good stuff on them" (and it was #2 on the brit charts I think at the time).

So much homework for me to do this weekend.

If you want to break things up, I can hype https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRTwz4Z1_ss this off Jezabels new album.  It hit Australia a few months back, but with the launch of the album I am hoping (in vain...) that they get some traction overseas.  Fantastic band that I think you might dig.  I don't consider this even close to their best work though.
NO MORE POKEMON - Meeplelard.
The king perfect of the DL is and always will be Excal. - Superaielman
Don't worry, just jam it in anyway. - SirAlex
Gravellers are like, G-Unit - Trancey.
