Title: Futurama 2011: Noms!
Post by: Cmdr_King on March 30, 2011, 01:59:50 AM
Having played two out of three DL-friendly games slated for release this year, it's time for our first Futurama of the season.  Format is as usual, but since I normally do this late at night, I figured it was time to switch things up and let folks with other active periods get a say.
So.  This topic will list all the available slots in the bracket.  What you'll be nomming is the right hand, unranked side of the tournament.  Please keep in mind that I like to use entirely unranked games there; I have no problem using unranked characters from ranked games on the DL side.
Please use a format of:  Dueller (Game) [Division].  If you think someone is incorrect about a division placement, please say so in topic, although as a rule I tend to default to the lower division for more borderline cases.

If you have a matchup you'd like to see, or a particular DL-side character that interests you, feel free to suggest it, but if not I'm perfectly content to use my usual lack-of-standards to do it myself.  Please read other nominations, because only two characters per game will be accepted.  if I reject an idea, I'll say so in-topic.

Important: Radiant Historia and Pokemon (Gen 5) are already getting berths, and are not valid noms.  These will be marked as such in the bracket, although in some cases I haven't decided who to use from the game yet, so you might have a chance to get a say.

Secret Oblivion Knight note: for the love of god, stop nomming Blizzard games in these.  They will not be accepted.

Misha Arsellec Lune (Ar Tonelico, Middle/Heavy?)

Adelle (FFTA2, Heavy?)

EDIT: More reasonable number of noms~

Troubador (Etrian Odyssey, Light)

Denam, Misha, Adelle, and Holly are accepted.  Someone hash out where Denam falls ranking wise.  Misha, if I remember Tal's notes, can basically delay-spam opponents to death and is a Heavy.

On the fence about Arcyelle and Troubador.  I've used Troubador more than once, seems like it always does really well and a little bored with it.  Arcyelle is a matter of "I'd prefer if each nommer used two games, but I'm not sure I want to say you HAVE to".

Kappa knows better.

OK: I've only done board-based noms once, and your Warcraft talk stood out.  It's sort of like how Niu is actually a better target for the Rule of Rob re: spoiling things.

Delay-spam does not work as it only triggers once per opponent's turn.  (Pretty sure she'd be Bluelike if it did since she has initiative...)

Will nom later.  Probably an EO3 character since I'm almost done with that topic and then something else.

I've suggested it before, but for the Joke Light slot, Ramus vs. Magikarp is actually a pretty good match.

Anyway.  I'd be cool with just nomming 2 FF13 characters. Lightning doesn't translate well and Sazh / Snow were already used in Futurama, so any of Hope / Vanille / Fang would be fine by me depending on if Middle slots or Heavy slots need to be filled (Hope is Middle, the others are Heavy, although Fang could maaaaaaaaybe sneak into a weak Godlike field without embarrassing herself).  If you want a 2nd character from a different game...  mm, Sands of Destruction still has a pretty small voterbase, so meh.  I'll think on it.  (There's FE:SD choices, but they're pretty bland and Marth + Jagen has been used a bunch in Futurama already.  Caeda hype?!)

Rosie (VC1), Heavy

Wilme (7S), Light

Added Holly, Adelle, and Rosie to the bracket.  Still hoping for discussion on Denam, haven't gotten around to looking at Misha for placement.

Snowfire- Except by Futurama standards Magikarp is ranked.
Also, the idea is that you do the work instead of me, so you'll have to pick out your FFXIII character.  I've used Snow and Sahz before, but the other four are all fair game.  Middle is usually harder to fill than Light, but experience has taught that this cast has good esoteric duelling skill and can pull out Middle wins easily so I dunno.

Wilme... hm.  I'd prefer not to use 7th Saga, but if it gets to be sunday and there's not enough Lights he's a go.

Man, n = 1 studies aren't the best data to base things on!

So, there is no max number?  Sounds fun.

Sorry, I thought someone had mentioned it last night.  Limit is 2 noms per person total.  Preferably from two different games, because there's a two dueller per game cap and one person using up a game is kinda mean!

Pyro: not taking D&D or VC2 (sorry, I... think you're the only VC2 player!), and I already reserved Radiant Historia's two slots (although either Rosch or Stocke is how I'll be filling it).  So pick two of the remaining five and I'll use them (they all sound pretty good.  Try to con Snow or Elfboy into nomming Reicher or Scarecrow, I think they would)

Rooks - Arcana - Heavy (Heavy PC for me is probably a Godlike PC for most, but he's a bit slowish)
Hector - Riviera - Middle (for most people...Middle boss is a Godlike to me, but hey...)

... is...  Hector the fight right before the final boss?  Some sort of barrier shifting nonsense?  Um yeah, no.

I am less certain on Arcana.  Who else played that?

(PS: feel free to keep altering your noms until you make two I like, folks.  Just poke me in IRC/make a post telling me there's a change.)

Scarecrow (Wizard of Oz) - Heavy

Well...  Hmm.

Adam (Shining Force Neo) [Godlike]
Lance (Epic Battle Fantasy 3) [Middle]

Fang, Hope, Reicher, and Strawman are in (derp, we keep calling him the wrong name).  Placed Denam in middle, since I gather he gained things of questionable DLness in the remake and that gives him teh extra bump (ie, I'm erring on the side of the lower ranking)

Help on where to place Misha is still needed.

Magic Fanatic: Shining Force Neo is rejected.  What the hell is Epic Battle Fantasy 3?

Hector does have barrier shifting, although I'd hesitate to call it nonsense - pretty basic Ice, Electric, Fire, Darkness (with dark getting the latter 3 as well), always vulnerable to physical and holy.  Finishing up getting notes on him.

If you still don't want Hector, then Ledah...uh...same division?

Arcana has been played by at least Tai and myself...probably another one or two (Fenrir!?) I can't remember.  If that doesn't work, Ari from Okage (Heavy division).

If Rooks is out, how about Green Knight from Castle Crashers in Light (THE DIVISION OF EVIL GAIA)?

If not that, then maybe Julius from Fire Emblem the Fourth, in Godlike?

Help on where to place Misha is still needed.

I thought we'd already decided that Misha was Middle? She's an initiative magical blitzer with a high 2HKO and fraility of Tia. If you're lenient on how RT turns work, she can increase her durability by a third by dropping a bit of her opening damage. In that case, she's an initiative blitzer with the fraility of... White Mage? She's better against magic, but not significantly. With Grathmelding twinking, she can be better, but I didn't even use those when I played AT1 and Tal doesn't have any legal setups for it listed in his stat topic, so I'd just as soon ignore that.
Title: Re: Futurama 2011: Noms!
Post by: Cmdr_King on March 31, 2011, 03:53:44 PM
So Misha can't do enough hax on turn 1 to kill someone/  Middle it is.

OK- well seeing as Tai is on hiatus and I don't... think Fenrir is voting in side tournies, that's not really enough Arcana voters, no.  Julius is acceptable.
Ledah... does he swing Godlike?  I remember him being kinda a joke aside from the requisite limit stage, although I will note that I played Riviera back when the GBA release had JUST come out, making it... uh... 2004?  Yeah.  Edit: der, misremembered where you put Hector.  Ledah in Middle is a go.

What grathmelding twinking would you even see as legal?  The three reyvateils have the plot claims to the Origin crystals, but that's about it.  I'd allow reyvateil only stuff as uniques (you can only use one in battle and freely swap them so they're pretty much unique) but I don't remember there being any of that outside of the song magic ones...  Hmm, will have to see if any of those are important.  Actually, didn't I list those?

For those not keeping score, we now sit at 4 Godlike, 3 Heavy, 2 Middle, and 7 Light slots available.

Ledah varies a bit based on the PC temp form, PC bonus dungeon form, and boss form.  To most, the PC is probably the best, but is completely fire-reliant, so...

Raze (MK 2)- Heavy (Don't think he's been used yet)

Komori or Vivian (EP) - Light

Lost Odyssey has Lights!!!! (And about 2 voters. If you get desperate Sarah or Ming. If you want fail, Cooke).

FF12 Larsa is also totally an available Light who I don't think was ever used.  (Vayne and Ashe (!) were both used.)  Playership is probably at least as good as FF12RW, and Filo's been in at least twice.

Larsa has little damage but infinite healing.
Title: Re: Futurama 2011: Noms!
Post by: SnowFire on April 01, 2011, 06:57:25 AM
He's competent in the plot and he's great in-game, because he will toss items constantly if any party member could use some HP.  His low damage is kind of moot if he's freeing up your team to ignore healing duties and beatdown, and he won't suicidally charge the enemies too much.  To be clear, he's a good Light, but definitely still a Light.  Think S5 Bernadette trading magic damage and bad Silent Light for infinite resources and slightly better (yet still bad) damage.  He has trouble with the likes of SoM Randi or XS2 Jin due to them being able to do all their damage at once, and gets into an epic race with Black Wizard for whether he gets statused first or he KOs BW with knife damage, so yeah, Light.  (Although now that I bring up Bern, he solidly beats her!  Infinite healing vs. lots and lots of healing.)

I see.  I'll keep that in mind.

Dhyer- both those look good.  Uh, what do the Eternal Poison characters do though?  It'd help pick between them.

Komori is a fighter mage (with some turn 2 statuses attached to damage, but nothing that gets him out of Light) with a nasty Wind weakness. Vivian is also a fighter mage with more emphasis on magic, including better status. Both are generics who are decently high Lights. Levatte is the sole story PC Light, and has healing, 100% silence and passable damage, but bad Pdur and speed. Lower Light than the other two.

welp, end of the week and still a lot of slots left.  So... open season declared!  People who've already nommed may feel free to suggest additional characters.  Character per game limits are still in play, meaning that Radiant Historia, Pokemon Black/White, The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road, and Mana Khemia 2 are off the table.  Otherwise, nom away, keep in mind that I"m not exactly going to take just any idea even now.

Let's nom some more:

Serene, from Riviera, placed likely in the 2nd highest division of Heavy

Zalbak, from Lufia The Legend Returns, in Godlike most certainly

Megan, from Fire Emblem 404, probably Godlike to most?

Marvel Frozen, from Star Ocean Fantastic Journey...probably Middle or so

Nessiah, from Yggdra Union, division most likely to be placed in would be Godlike I'd say

Natalia, from Valkyrie Profile Covenant of the Plume, in Middle to most?

Morte, from Planescape Torment, in Heavy or so

Cyberdwarf, from Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden Chapter One of the Hoopz Barkley Saga, in...Middle?  Heavy?  Could swing either way
