Is this a continuation of the series that aired last fall?  That one fucking NAILED the 80s animation look.  Absolutely gorgeous.  Not sure whether it ever got translated tho.
Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Nah, it's a modern-setting series that loosely keeps theme and continuity with the green/red/pink jacket series.

The Woman Called Fujiko Mine did get a US release too, though, with the Funimation dub cast.

Lottsa boobies in that fujiko spin off.

The English cast for lupin is pretty boss.

But I've been watching subbed anime for a long time.

Ping Pong - watched through

I enjoyed it. Can't remember anything specific to note.

Mawaru Penguindrum - watched through

I enjoyed it. But I might have enjoyed it more if there wasn't so much left unexplained at the end, among other reasons.

I liked the Metro touches, although the subbing for displays was a bit difficult to read over the moving background, and the signage/location names ultimately don't mean anything concrete to me.

Also had some good music.

Royal Space Force: The Wings Of Honnêamise - watched

Reasonable enough. Don't remember if I had anything in particular to complain or ask about. Presumably anything anyone's ever had to say about that one pair of scenes has already been said at some point.

Steins;Gate - watched through

Over halfway through I was wondering why this show was so popular.

Eventually, it turned out that all the best parts were extremely back-loaded. However, personally, they're not enough to push the show into great-territory. It's just decent :S

I don't think that the timelines entirely make sense but that's time travel in general.

Quick ordering of currently-airing shows:

Durarara!! x2-3 (5) > Dimension W (5) > Iron-Blooded Orphans (19) > Grimgar Of Fantasy And Ash (5) > Snow White With Red Hair 2 (5) > Luck & Logic (6) > Erased (5) > Assassination Classroom 2 (6) > Dagashi Kashi (5) >> BBK/BRNK (6)

Yeah I started watching Stein's Gate a while back and didn't even make it halfway through.  If your show takes that long to get cool, then it's not worth it.

Hm. I'd put the new season at Durarara = Erased > Dimension W >>> BBK/BRNK.

I had to stop watching Grimgar. I hated the voices of the entire cast. Grated on my ears terribly.

Durarara is the best it's ever been. I love Kujiragi. She has amazing dialogues with the entire cast, especially her one with Shizuo in the new ep.

I'm fairly sure that AnimeLab is a week behind everyone else for Durarara, annoyingly, and then that's compounded with another week delay for my not having a premium account.

I'd love to have both Grimgar and Erased higher but Grimgar devolves into tediousness like the bath segment too often and there are things about the general setup of Erased which bother me. (Although it should probably at least be above Luck & Logic, I took an old ordering from elsewhere and essentially only moved Grimgar downwards without really considering the rest of the shows.)

I caught up with the Naruto anime, which I realistically shouldn't be surprised by. I'm not going to watch the episodes following Tsukiyomi. While it isn't really filler, it is filler, and I did a enough good job taking yearly breaks from Naruto that I can do it again.

Apparently canon episodes won't start until 2017. So here's my yearly break again. I'm at a weird point of limbo, being that I haven't been caught up on any hobby within the last ten years. I don't think I have another anime to begin or already in the works.

Hm.

PS, Sasuke and Sakura still fail.

The new manga hasn't even come out yet, and it's not being written or drawn by Kishimoto, so... I'm expecting it to be the same quality as the Yu-gi-oh retreads.  Look for another anime.

Not that surprising, but not expected. Production IG bought the rights a few years ago specifically for the possibility of remake/sequel.

It's a tossup.... Headed by Production IG, not Gainax. No word on original creator/director Kazuya Tsurumaki coming back. We'll see. I don't think I'll waste energy getting hyped for it until I see some tangible details come out about it.

EDIT: Secondary press release on AS's forums sez Tsurumaki and a few other staff are coming back, still finding myself rather apathetic at prospect of sequel.

You know I vaguely remember flcl, and I can't say I was impressed by it back then.

So this news of a remake isn't jonesing me up in the slightest.

Some context, about 12 years ago Sopko put together what could pretty much be submitted as a thesis paper on flcl exploring the references and meaning behind it all.

Per usual, I have left this far too long and don't remember half of anything I had to say about anything.

Bubblegum Crisis - watched through

Fairly entertaining. Some nice songs.

A bit too fond of introducing side characters just to kill them off.

Doesn't end very conclusively, annoyingly. The only related series available over here currently is Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040, which I've been led to understand is essentially an inferior remake. Oh well.

Wolf Children - watched

Pretty entertaining. Nothing stands out as particularly good or bad in my memory so I have no material to work with here.

Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans - watched through

Reasonably great.

Main issue with the show is the ending, which I'll just say is tonally inconsistent.

Looking forward to the next season.

BBK/BRNK - watched through

On the whole, this is a very stupid show. I don't think it's worth listing all the ways. A selection:

* Reiko's team are oppressing all other Bubuki users (at least in Japan), along with controlling the government, killing people, and other assorted nastiness. Of course they're just hard-done-by, they're not actually the villains. Reiko's team: Worse Than Eternia.
* The semi-actual villains only show up around three-quarters into the show and get comparatively little screentime. The only reason they have for wanting to drop Treasure Island on Russia is because their leader is ludicrously arrogant?
* Bubukis and Burankis have a ton of stupid rules/features. You got the person corresponding with the left limb of Buranki A and the person corresponding with the left limb of Buranki B here and they want to have a duel? Great, all other Bubukis in existence will prevent their users from interfering with the duel, except when they don't, and the loser's Bubuki will be petrified untiiiiiiiiiil
all other corresponding limbs from Buranki A and Buranki B have duels
I hope they're not on opposite sides of the world
or dead

I am probably going to watch the second season because I'm insane apparently??? It better feature a lot of Epizo.

Luck & Logic - watched through

It could have, should have, done a lot more with the concept of logic cards than it did, but it didn't. Oh well.

I don't care for how in the lead-up to the ending the discussion turns to (paraphrased):
Villains: Paradise is a world where everyone is granted equal potential. Wouldn't you consider that a world brimming with hope?
Heroes: No, living as you are, even when it means you go through suffering and distress - living this way is what gives you hope. [...] Any time and place you spend with those you love, no matter how modest, is paradise.

The poor/downtrodden/oppressed/etc of the world thank you for your support, ALCA.

Of course the main villain doesn't actually want any of that so everything worked out for the best ♪♪♪♪♪♪

I don't currently think I'd watch another season of this if they made one.

Dimension W - watched through

Mostly entertaining. The ending lets us all down again. What is up with endings recently.

I don't actually remember what problem I had with the ending. I didn't really follow the flashback of the conversation about the Genesis, and the new coil out of nowhere was fairly inexplicable, and the arc went on for too long, but even together those don't add up to a massive problem.

Regardless, they need to make another season and just fill it with microarcs like the hotel mystery arc. Possibly devote a little time to the deal with the new coil and with Kyoma's friend from New Tesla.

Grimgar Of Fantasy And Ash - watched through

Another show, another show with a poor ending.

Grimgar stuck to its guns and continued jumping between good parts and bad parts til it ended. It's fairly depressing that we can't have a show that's just all the good parts.

Ultimately, we got some good songs out of it.

I would watch another season in the hopes that it had a better good:bad ratio and had more montages.

Why was I watching so many freaking shows last season.

Snow White With Red Hair 2 - watched through

Was good. Ending was poor.

Nice of the King of Tanbarun to make an appearance even though the show never ended up following through with him in any way. King/Queen of Clarines still hasn't made an appearance.

Would watch 3rd season.

Erased - watched through

Was good. No comment on ending.

Interesting way of dealing with the whole problem about lack of relevant memories after history changes.

Dagashi Kashi - watched through

Was fairly regularly amusing. Didn't really have an ending per se.

Would probably watch a second season.

Durarara!! x2 Chapter 3 - watched through

Was great. Ending was bad.

Not sure if a followup season(set) is in the card but would watch if so.

Not sure if AL are slacking or if they've somehow just failed to get very many licenses this season, but they've barely got anything up so far. Currently only watching Assassination Classroom 2 (continuing from last season) and Macross Delta (illegitimately).

Start watching Kiznaivers because I like Miwa, and a show that Kaji finally got a role that fits him. (godbless!)
Two episode in and... the fuck is Kobayashi and Ootsuka thinking? The whole concept of the show is like something that came out of a brainfart!
And spare me Okada Mary Sue. Your writing is nauseating me already!

So I'm watching anime again, apparently.

One Punch Man: I remain amazed this gimmick holds up as well as it does over the course of the series. Good gag series that sneaks in some solid action every now and then. Saitama is an absolute joy.

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

I actually really liked this.  It wasn't so hot to start, but I liked the slow pace and when it was good it was really good.  The ending wasn't really an ending so much as a stopping point because, hey, needed to stop somewhere, right?  Kinda hoping this gets another season, but if not, well.  The adventures are clearly going to continue, just without an audience.

Erased

Interesting premise.  The last couple of episodes did take a turn I wasn't quite expecting which was nice, and I think that the ending did actually shore up the whole enterprise, which is rare but welcome.

Gate

This one is entirely guilty pleasure.  There are times when you really get this sense of similarity between Japan and the US.  This story where you've got a gateway from the modern day world to this fantasy world is one, since the protagonists are the noble soldiers of the SDF and a trio of magic using ladies who have conveniently fallen for the main, a surprisingly badass first Lt.  Of course, there's plenty of war and fighting, but it's all really one sided because apparently the imperial army doesn't use combat magic, or have any of the local archmages or demigods chipping in.  Nah, those are all siding with the Japanese or staying neutral.  They've got an entirely mundane army based off of the Roman Empire at its height, complete with an army of vassals that can be called in to supplement.  And numbers, boy howdy have they got numbers.  But, like I said, all mundane.  I wouldn't give Julius Caesar much odds against any of the major modern nations either, and every major fight is a curbstomping.  Of course, the empire still exists because the glorious SDF is this perfect institution of glory and honour, and their political leadership is this paragon of virtue that doesn't want to conquer by force, despite this place apparently being lousy in farm land, mineral resources, and oil.  And up until that last sentence, you could swap SDF for US Army, and you'd have a pretty good jingoistic American premise.

So, there isn't really any tension in relations between the empire and the Japanese.  But, they do manage to get some interesting stuff going on with the plot by splitting its focus in two primary ways.  First, you have the adventures of the First Lt and his crew.  Which, is light world building kinda stuff, as he goes around on the small scale doing acts of heroism and getting to know the locals, or escort/bodyguard some of them when they pay a visit to the modern world.  ((Though, that trip gets me to another guilty please bit, portrayal of the US from a non-NA PoV.  This US government is not sympathetically portrayed, and you get this crazy 4-way fight between American, Russian, and Chinese operatives and a demigoddess at a hot springs at one point.  ))

The other plotline, and this is the one I kinda non-guiltily like, is the power struggle amongst the Imperial nobility.  Essentially, there's three children of the emperor, each with their own power base.  And over season 2, each of them develops a bit and comes to have their own response to, effectively, this overpowering military force that can tear them to pieces whenever it wants to.  Granted, there is pretty clearly a favoured one we're supposed to sympathise with.  And it's not especially deep.  But, it's a touch interesting at least.

Macross Delta

So, I heard this existed.  Not too much to say yet because I've only seen two episodes, but....  but....
Ok, confession time, I haven't seen 7 or Zero yet, so maybe these will invalidate some of what I'm saying.  And I'll admit, Macross has always been a franchise where they really, really believe in the power of song and they always have some tremendous feat accomplished by singing.  Even if it is Macross Plus, where it's the villain pulling off the crazy musical stunts.  But...  this one seems to have gone full magical girl idols?  Really?

Seriously, the core premise is something I get.  Crazy potential illness, potential space transcending madness inducing song that can be healed with the power of song?  That is something at the heart of the series.  Having them protected by armed force while they do this?  Both done with great effect in previous iterations and really sensible.  But it's always been that even when they're in a combat zone, all the singers do is sing.  The song is all they need, and they've got soldiers around for the actual fighting.  I'm hoping that there's an explanation soon about how this is a lot of crazy prepped special effects, because... yeah.

Moving on the the male lead, he also gets his share of not very good stuff.  Namely, Macross has always been decent at subverting the falling into the cockpit trope.  They did it in the original, they did it in Frontier  ((not in Plus, there they start with one of the best pilots in the fleet)) and in both cases they find themselves in the middle of a sudden attack, with a civilian in need of saving, and a valkyrie right in front of them either without a pilot, or a recently dead pilot.  In one case, you have a professional, though young, stunt pilot, and in the other you have a gifted prodigy with two years of training at a prestigious piloting school.  In both cases, they prove to be crap at fighting in their first fight, but top notch at flying well enough to carry the civilian to safety and not getting hit.  Here...  you have an aimless drifter who typically works as a warehouse worker.  Sure, he's shown to be good at using one of those to move freight around, but it's freight hauling.  So yeah, unlike the others he does get shot down and needs to actually be caught before he crashes, but given he has no experience flying it's still kinda jarring.  Also, his special skill that lets him stand out is apparently he's great at mech dancing.  Seriously, he hops into one, notes the controls are just like what he's used to ((Frontier does the same thing, but again, two years of pilot training, and heck, it even gives a reason as to why he's wearing a pilot's uniform/valkyrie ignition suit when the attack hits)) and then starts battle dancing to surprising effect.  Of course, even before this, the support valkyries that have trained pilots were doing synchronized combat in time with the music.  And don't even get me started on the military outfit that's perfectly fine with a recruit who openly states disdain for military protocol and refuses to abide by it.

I'm gonna watch it, because it's Macross.  I'm going to be hoping that some of this will be mitigated as the series goes on, that the ending won't be too stupid.  Who knows, maybe I'll even get around to watching 7, or 0, to see if it has some kind of roots in those two, despite not really expecting to care too much for either of them.

I will say two things to finish.  First, I find it interesting.  This is the third time I've seen them have a love triangle involving a pilot and a young, innocentish pop-star wannabe.  But I think this is the first time I've preferred him winding up with the pop-star wannabe.  Probably a mix of not liking him so much, thinking the other prong of the love triangle is getting dragged into this because they need a third leg for the standard Macross love triangle and she really doesn't need the complication, and because I think there's actual chemistry in that pairing this time.  Secondly, Zentraedi battleship captain.  Bout damned time, and I look forward to seeing more of him.  Heck, he even looks like a green version of your standard battleship captain, so I am hoping to see him be badass.

Blood Blockade Battlefront: God tier OP and ED.

Otherwise... okay. I enjoyed the show. Characters are fun (though some needed more attention). Episode to episode stuff was fun. Visuals were great. But I dunno if I'm stupid or something but I found the overall metaplot with Black and White oddly hard to follow (had to read a summary afterwards to get it) which kept taking me out of the show. Really felt like it needed another episode or 6.

WataMote: Fun, funny, heartfelt, honest, and really, really painful and cringe inducing to watch. Hits a little too close to home sometimes.
