Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash: A fun show that takes the now-standard "regular people trapped in an RPG" and plays it slowly and seriously. It's pretty easy to mess up a story like this by playing up the escapist power fantasy side of it. Grimgar opts to focus on the everyday struggles of those who do not appear to be 'destined heroes' or even particularly good at the whole adventuring business they are involuntarily forced into. The main characters all kind of objectively suck at what they are required to do , like real people ACTUALLY WOULD. Less "How awesome it would be to be an RPG hero" and more "Actually being adventurers in an RPG would suck". The focus on that aspect of it is relatively tight, as even the 'good' adventures are gruesome and frightening affairs.

The show is not without it's fanservice/tropes, but these are more like a checkmark without any real narrative focus. While undesirable certain eye-rolling moments can be revealing (the party discussing a girl's shapeliness displays serious body image issues the subject has). Slow paced, but definitely worth a look for those who may have liked the premise of this type of show but got turned off by the escapist/power fantasy main character centralism of other such shows. The direction of the show is good too. Many calm and slow moments of nice artwork and character building interspersed with fights that are ugly, brutish, and short.

Yona of the Dawn:
Kind of a standard one girl with a cast-full-of-guys type story. The story follows a spoiled princess whose beloved prince kills her dad and she has to come to grips with that and grow as a person to lead an insurrection/rebellion. I can't say the characters take excessively stupid actions and the political angle isn't bad. I don't really like the main heroine though and that's kind of a show-stopper.

Gargantia in the Verdurous world:
What looked like a space opera war turns into a fish-out-of-water story about a young man from a (necessarily) brutal military society being thrown into something very different and having to cope. With an awesome giant robot. Gorgeous show with a fun premise and fairly tight focus on the central premise. Even if it has 'fanservice' it feels so ancillary to the actual subject matter that it just fits in with the other oddities that Ledo the main character faces. Fun times.

I really liked Gargantua. While the fanservice eventually levels out to not be much, that whole festival scene in the beginning was fucking skeevy enough to almost make me drop the series.

So, been watching that new Gundam, Iron Blooded Orphans.  Generally pretty fun stuff.  Main highs so far is the main pilot, who a few people have tried to psych out by trying to convince him he's turning into a cold blooded killer.  If he's feeling talkative, that ploy has him agree they may have a point before killing them, and usually he doesn't bother saying anything.  Also, it passes the Weber Test in a few different ways, which is always nice.  The core cast is also pretty good.  I mean, the core of it is the brotherhood of the main unit, and specifically of Orga and Mikazaki (the captain and the pilot) who compliment each other nicely.  But the female lead makes a good case that, despite not being front and center promotionally, or ever doing anything combat related, she may actually be the main character.  I mean, without her, there isn't really a plot.  She changes the most from a fairly meaty character arc, and you can clearly see how her behaveour, posture, and position in this military organization changes from beginning to end of the first major arc.  Some of the major echos you get later on call back to her actions early on, and at the end of it, the main resolution is as much her conviction and her words as it is the fighting prowess of Mikazaki and the boys of Tekkadan.

Of course, having finished the first main arc, I am left with one overwhealming thought.  You can sum the whole thing up by saying it's just one perilous and roundabout trip from Mars to Edmonton.  At least the vast forests of Edmonton got proper billing.  I can only imagine how this has been received by the Gundam fans in Calgary.

your name.  - This movie tore up the Japanese box office in 2016, apparently.  Going in, I figured that it was going to be your average sappy high school romance with a side of Freaky Friday body swapping.  It's considerably better than that.  Can totally see why it was a big hit.

There's a lot of stuff to like, including a well done twist (a twist that's been done before, sure, but it's good and surprisingly topical (surprise Fukushima?!))), but I'll especially note that given the choice between having the characters act like idiots v. plot bullshit to get in the way, the script writer picked plot bullshit.  Which is occasionally still a little frustrating, but I'll take competent characters doing some obvious logical things who are kept in their toes by a tough situation over characters holding the idiot ball to extend an extra 15 minutes of plot.

Good stuff.

So Boruto anime is coming out soon, so I should probably talk about the manga.

Verdict:  It's surprisingly decent!  The art is done by Kishimoto's former assistant, so it's visually identical to Naruto.  New character designs are good, and the character personalities are actually very good.

On the minus side there's some stuff tacked on which is obviously meant to sell merchandise.  One of the plot points is a wrist launcher that shoots ninja scrolls.

So if you liked Naruto you should like this also.  Definitely one of the most respectful "sequel" mangas out there.

The chapters that are out right now are just the movie's plot retreaded. From the next chapter onwards, it'll be original material.

That said, Chou Chou is the best character.

Gundam ibo is pretty great. At least the first season was. I was thoroughly entertained with the cast and how it the ending had me cheering on the supposed big bad.

Looking forward to seeing how it all ends!

Tsuredure Children:  Short vignettes about high schoolers confessing to each other.  Pretty standard fare, and then this happens:

The look on mom's face is priceless.
Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Napping Princess - Pretty good.  Kinda like if someone decided to make Pan's Labyrinth be about self-driving cars rather than the Spanish Civil War, and also way more cheerful.  Just came out stateside today; I saw it subbed, so can't comment on the quality of the dub.  (Although the SUB's quality was a little erratic, frankly...  who translates "Shinkansen" as "super express" rather than either leaving it as Shinkansen, or calling it "Bullet Train?"  Maybe if you're translating for 9-year olds?!  But they won't care anyway...)

Also, you might have heard of the soundtrack composer, a lady by the name of Yoko Shimomura.

In the realm of accessible nitpicks that can be appreciated without having seen the movie: it makes sense when, y'know, you have something like Excalibur sealed away and people still want it because it's an awesome sword.  This tends to make less sense with technology, though.  Like...  pretty sure that Welkin's dad's tank in Valkyria Chronicles should be an obsolete relic, similar to using a WWI tank in WWII.  This is another one of those cases where people are on the hunt for some tech that's 14-18 years old...  okay, to the movie's credit, it's been "maintained" and perfected since, but come on.  That's code from 2003 by modern standards, so think something horrible in old versions of Shockwave Flash that interfaces with Windows XP and assumes batteries are three times as heavy as they are now.  That maintenance better have been hella good to not want to throw the code just in the trash immediately.  But, like I said, a nitpick, and one that is less relevant than usual due to the aforementioned "maintained since then" excuse.

Evangelion: One of the classic animes I hadn't seen.

I have no idea what the fuck I just watched.

It's either:

1) a thoughtful sociological essay on the human condition as the individual tries to fit into society's expectations.

2) the author circlejerking with pompous psychobabble as an excuse to create elaborate drawings of women's undergarments.

It is fundamentally 1, but the writers of the series at times are not sure what they are doing either and leads to various moment that makes you wonder what's wrong with them.
