Couple more hours left this voting period.

Team Speed Manip: Fie (Cold Steel) / Arnaud / Tidus vs Team Sexy Beasts: Rei (BoF3), Nikki (MK), Kevin (SD3)  Strong kneejerk  Kevin has no answer to Evade & Counter so Sexy Beasts are already disadvantaged at a 2 on 3.  And I don't see them pulling it off against the caliber of opposition they're up against.

Team Palmer: Olivier (WA3) / Linny (FM3) / Palmer vs Team Superaielman: Kain / Noel / Nergal

Yeah, this looks right.  A closer look.

Scaling down Olivier's gimmick for a 1 on 1, Kain wins in two swings of a Holy Lance.  I see him as faster so Olivier is inflicting either poison or disease but not both.  For this example, I'm going to use disease because it's more straightforward to interpret.  So Kain goes into the next match slightly damaged; disease denying the heal.

Linny isn't taking down Kain before he runs out of missile ammo.  Front Mission 3 treats missiles as fire type and I see it running into Kain's elemental resistance.  For even more insult, I treat FM3 missiles as physical fire damage.  Because of how resistance works in FF4, that means the power is being halved and then it runs into Kain's good defense stat.  And then there's the evasion.
Linny's not getting all his shots off in practice.  Kain is going to down him with Jumps before then and missile wanzers are on the low end of durability.  As an estimate, I'd figure Linny takes out 20-40% of Kain's physical durability before going down.

Palmer next.  Kain is still at over half health.  Palmer's going to need a lot of shots to take it down since his damage also rams into Kain's elemental resistance.  As Mako Gun is magical, it's going to be doing a bit under half its normal damage.  Not as neutered as a fire physical but still significantly slows Palmer's damage output.  Palmer probably has enough shots for the task but it could be argued that Kain outslugs him first.

Kain solos.  Who saw that coming?  (and even if Palmer beats him, he's too drained to deal with Noel)  Less of a slaughter if Kain is poisoned depending on how one interprets it but Palmer cannot pressure Noel at all regardless.

Winners bracket 2 will remain open for the conventional one week voting window.

Wasn't going to repost the match format writeup but I already had it open in a separate window so it's a 20 second cut-and-paste job.  So it follows.  There are a few additional rulings, for the curious and to clear up potential confusion.

- Though the teams are 3 members each, matches take place as a series of 1 on 1 bouts.  First bout starts with the first member of each team.  When one fighter is knocked out, the next member of the team in sequence steps up and the fight continues from that point.  Winner of the match is the team that knocks out all 3 of the other team's fighters.
- Each bout is timed.  After 50 turns (shared by both fighters) if neither fighter is knocked out a Time Over will be declared. Both will be considered defeated and the next bout will begin with the next members of each team.  Hopefully it's obvious but the timer does reset to full after any KO.
- A fighter who knocks out an opponent will receive a small amount of HP recovery.  This starts at 20%HP if winning in one action and scales linearly downward to 0.4% recovery for winning on turn 50.  Note that this winner's HP recovery is scaled to an average HP fighter.  To use the Wild ARMS 3 crew as an example.  Virginia would regain more life proportional to her max HP than Gallows and Clive would under equal win conditions.  I originally envisioned this as an event based heal that bypasses statuses but I found the idea that Disease or similar statuses that prevent in-battle healing also blocking this recovery so amusing I decided to incorporate it as standard.  So if a winning fighter is under a status effect that would prevent HP recovery, they get nothing.  Undead reversal does not apply to this recovery so any states that would reverse cures aren't applicable here.
- Other than this HP recovery, the winning fighter continues from where they left off.  HP, MP, skill charges, and other resources will remain depleted.  Meter gain, if applicable, also carries over.  So do all status effects and stat changes, positive or negative and their durations.  This is different from fighting games, which will clear all status buffs and debuffs between rounds.
- Turn order is reinitialized when a new fighter comes in.  This is for interpretation simplicity.  No initiative advantage from KO'ing an opponent with a counter, too bad.  The re-initialization only applies to turn order.  Any independent effects such as Mana Khemia timed cards remain active.
- No dead team member bonuses or penalties.  The fights are 1 on 1 after all.
- There is a new voting option.  Double KO, if the match ends with a Time Over with the last member of both teams.  There are a number of options to handle this.  Decision (cast vote either way based on whatever personal criteria you please), Coinflip, or (my favorite comedy option) Reserves, which I've made a post about in the nomination topic going into greater detail.

Voting on Losers bracket 1 will remain open for another day or two.  I was not busy at the moment and decided to get this round posted.

Only two matches.  Voting time will be a week as usual though I do plan on posting the second losers bracket set sometime in the middle of the week.

I'm guessing that anyone inclined to vote on these is already familiar with the format from past rounds and I don't need to repost that block of text.  Can still do so if requested.

Team Fliers: Nina (Breath of Fire 4), Sumia (FE Awakening), Rose (Legend of Dragoon) vs Team Sexy Beasts: Rei (BoF3), Nikki (MK), Kevin (SD3)  Looking up numbers in the stat topics, transformed Rei doesn't quite oneshot Nina.  And she's faster so she can healstall until a doubleturn or timeout and oops... forgot Rei has an argument for landing a critical hit before then.  Guess this doesn't favor team Fliers as much as I thought it would.  Though I'm not familiar enough with the other two to call it.

Team Servants: Gremio (S1), Brey/Borya (DQ4), Jakob (FE Fates) vs Team Palmer: Olivier (WA3) / Linny (FM3) / Palmer  Given how FF7 hit calculations work, Palmer's 50 Df% seemed to be more like 30% evade in practice.  And after mathing it out, 30% is close enough for gauging how much he'll dodge.

Heavyweight

Team Sexy Beasts: Rei (BoF3), Nikki (MK), Kevin (SD3) vs Team ...: Crono (CT), Luminary (DQ11), Freyjadour (Suiko V)

Did a lot of stat topic digging to work out how this would play out.  Crono beats Rei, the question is by how much.  He's right on the edge of two-shotting Rei with Luminaire and will be faster with Swallow.  Red Katana probably pushes up his magic just enough for a two Luminaire kill though that leaves him losing the speed race with Nikki.  Nikki beats Crono, the question is how much damage she takes doing so.  Luminary beats Nikki unless she lands instant death.  If it gets to Luminary vs Kevin, the sleep magic messes with Kevin's game badly.  Kevin's durability and resources in a light class may keep him alive but Luminary can just stall for a timeout and win that way.  Heavily favors the silent mains but Luminary interp is too much of a headache for me to call it.  Freyjadour has no answer to Warrior Monk Kevin if he cannot blitz past the healing.  EDIT: Going to call it in favor of the beasts as DQ11 interp is headache-inducing and this gets them out faster.

Lightweight

Team Mostly Harmless Dancers: Primrose (8PT), Dancer (FFT), Azura (FE Fates) vs Team Palmer: Olivier (WA3) / Linny (FM3) / Palmer

Piggybacking of Random's analysis but mine diverges in one significant way.  FFT Dancer is going for Witch Hunt and hopefully knock off enough of Palmer's MP so that he doesn't have enough for the killing shot to Azura.  Witch Hunt numbers with Power Sleeve (and Thief Hat to start earlier.

Base: 15 MP damage
1 A Save: 17 MP damage
2 A Saves: 18 MP damage

Dancer will act first and will probably get off 2 Witch Hunts between each of Palmer's attacks.  A Save will generally trigger at least once so that's 66-68 FFT MP damage.  Comes down to how one scales Palmer's MP.  FFT Dancer needs to take off 65 of Palmer's 240 MP to score a win for team dancer.  She does manage it if Palmer's MP pool is treated as average.  If that's the case, this could be the first matchup in DL history where Witch Hunt is relevant.

So if it seems team dancer takes it, why did I still vote for team Palmer.  Because it's funny.  (and it does take a lot of favorable judgment calls for the dancers  But mostly because it's funny)

Even though regular nominations have closed, there's still a role for other fun team ideas that missed the deadline.  Because matches can end in Double KO, the Reserves option is that both teams are eliminated and a different team that originally wasn't entered takes its place. If Reserves is invoked, a replacement team will be chosen by RNG from all eligible options.  This includes both teams that didn't make it in as well as any additional ideas that come in.

No upper limit on noms here.  It's entirely up to chance whether any entrants from this point see action.

Here's mine which I thought of but forgot to include.

Lightweight:

No Offense Healers: Raja (PS4), Amy (PS2 Numan Revolutions), Mint (ToP)

Tournaments / King of RPGDL Round 1: Underway
« on: February 19, 2023, 05:14:58 AM »
Rolled up some brackets and we're off.  Going to be double elimination since with only 8 teams in each division, it's very little extra work.  I don't really have any hype announcer speeches in me so I'm going to go straight into the match format.  Got a few added surprises so be sure to read up.

And now the matches.  Using the stat topics or other outside resources to get an idea of how fighters from games you haven't played is encouraged.  Otherwise, I have reason to believe some matches wouldn't get voted on at all. -

Going to extend the nomination period through Feb. 15 or if both divisions hit 16 nominations, whichever comes first.  8 teams are enough for a tourney to run though.

Hadn't planned on adding noms myself but came up with a few silly ideas anyways so here they are.

Heavyweight -

Sexy Beasts: Rei (BoF3), Nikki (MK), Kevin (SD3)

Nikki has limited resources so she's better off not going first.  And Kevin is very obnoxious to kill even if someone can deal with his offense.

Lightweight -

Wussy Bards: Edward (FF4), Bard (FF5), Bard (FFT)

Somebody's getting an easy win off these jokers.  I didn't even try to place them strategically just going by chronological appearance.

C-tier ninjas: Akahgi (Suiko 4), Frank (SH3), Sheena (ToS)

Tournaments / King of RPGDL nominations: It's happening
« on: February 05, 2023, 08:57:44 PM »
Inspired somewhat by RPGVO, this is a tourney modeled in a King of Fighters format.  Teams of 3 battle each other in a bid to be named the King of fighters.  Matches take place in 1 on 1 bouts.  When one fighter is knocked out, the next member of the team comes in to take their place and the match continues from there.  Winner of a match is the one who knocks out the other team's fighters.

Nomination guidelines:

There will be two divisions: lightweight and heayweight
Lightweight is for light tier fighters and those on the border of light-middle
Heavyweight is for heavy tier fighters and those on the border of middle-heavy
Middle tier fighters don't get a separate division but they'll lean one direction or the other.  So use your own judgment to determine which side of the power curve they're on.

Godlike tier fighters will not be participating in this tourney, to prevent boring, one sided stomps where a single godlike crushes an entire team.  Heavy-godlike borderline noms are also discouraged for a similar reason.

Up to 4 team nominations per division per person.  This is an upper limit; there's no pressure to use them all.  Character order matters: the listed order is the order the fighters will go in the matches.
- You are permitted to nominate punies for lightweight.  As long as you're OK with them getting pummeled.  Not really recommended but the entertainment potential is enough to have it as an option.
- While godlikes aren't part of this tourney, you may nominate a single godlike. (separate from the other noms)  No promises I'll use them but it does seem fitting to have 1-2 SNK bosses to go with an SNK game inspired tourney.

Probably close nominations by the end of next Sunday, Feb. 12.  I think that's all the necessary info.

General Chat / Re: The Phantasy Star 4 cast takes on FF6: Beyond Chaos
« on: December 31, 2022, 10:05:54 PM »
So more recent versions of Beyond Chaos have an optional setting that I've been avoiding as it's likely to dissolve the game into one-dimensional skill spam.  But I have been curious about it since it was introduced.  And occasionally, one gets that mood where one wants to smash things with overwhelming power...

This is where audience participation comes in.  I don't need it necessarily but might as well have some fun.  So send me your name suggestions for massively overpowered characters along with  thoughts of why you consider them overpowered.  6 character limit applies due to game limitations.  RPG characters favored but I'm willing to be open to suggestions from other games and media too.  You can suggest a character they replace or leave to chance; either is fine.

Suggestions without accompanying reasons will be ignored.  What matters to me is the case for a nom's overpoweredness.   Preferably in a way that communicates to someone unfamiliar with the character.  Timeframe for noms is flexible; I'll start the run when I have enough name ideas to get the thing running.

Reserved for final battle writeup if I ever get the motivation to take on stat bloated final boss.  Stat bloat Kefka is terrifying even with the insane stuff I have access to and one unlucky move from him can send the fight into a downward spiral swiftly.

46
Lufia 2: True Gades

So the version of Gades that's in the monster data but not actually used in the retail game is...  kind of dangerous actually.  He does enough damage to put up a real fight.  Against my Lv 45-ish party, Destructo Wave does enough damage to threaten a 2HKO to the party before defense buffing.  Well, everyone except Guy who has the Neutral resisting shield from the World's Most Difficult Trick.  Compared to the 150-200 everyone else takes, Destructo Wave does double-digit damage to Guy which is reduced to 0-20 after defense buff.  Fake and Courage in the first round were key to staying in control.  And Devastation just does lots of ST damage, enough to send anyone into the ground.  It's definitely not Neutral element either (maybe dark) as Guy went from near full HP to 1 from it.
Still, all Gades has is damage and no status and my team has the tools to keep up.  And with 3 people packing light element offense, they can give as good as they're getting.  Guy with Undead Ring and Hydra Rock and one Tweak does 2400 with Triple Attack IP so that's about a quarter of his HP in one attack.

Very little to comment on the rest of the game.  Amon is a chump with confusion resistance.  Likewise, Erim poses little threat to a team that remembers instant death protection.  The only KO on Doom Island came from the Gades rematch where he KOed Maxim on round 2 so I didn't get to use Wave Motion.

As it turns out, the only status vulnerability a Maxim with a full set of Divine armor has is sleep.  Which Daos' Terror Wave landed on its second use.  One more Holy Energy from Selan won the fight in the next round so it's an amusing footnote.

Ending is still emotional even after so long since I last played the story.

Ryudo vs Kain Highwind:  The one matchup where I have played both source games.  I don't have much respect for Ryudo's damage capacity.  Math says he can squeak it out though it would take every shot of Flying Tenseiken to push past Blood Lance Jumps.  Still voting Kain for comedy and humiliation factor since it is close.

Chaz Ashley vs Lanington: I scale Lanington based on his power level when I beat him.  So his offense and defense are pretty terrifying.  Chaz is getting heal locked.  Even if Chaz gets the first attack, he doesn't have a means of mitigating Lanington offense and doesn't have the power to push through the durability in two attacks.

Genis vs Maria Balthasar: I don't respect Genis' damage output that much so Maria might have had a shot if her speed wasn't so poor.

Keep forgetting to post my votes...

Orlandu vs Sephiroth: Orlandu doesn't really have a way to dispel Wall and it reduces the effectiveness of Night Sword spam.

However, seems I overestimated Sephiroth's durability.  And Orlandu is fast enough to get the first shot and take out nearly all of Seph's HP.  Even with Wall, the next attack will kill.  Works for me.

Genis Sage vs Ryudo:  Both have their main damage moves rely on charge times.  Ryudo takes hits better so I'm kneejerking his way but could be argued.
Maria Balthasar vs Kain Highwind:  Using 074's math, Maria can land a KO with 5 uses of Robo Kick and one other attack and not run out of EP.  Kain's going to run her out of HP first so the point is moot but it makes the fight look a little less hopeless for her.
