Discussion / DL-Con 7 - Universal Trip
« on: March 12, 2012, 12:53:16 AM »
Figured I'd give this it's own topic so we can start discussing things, if necessary. Here's a list of people going so far!

IMPORTANT: One person (possibly two depending on the amount of people) will need to supply information to pick up the comp passes. Apparantly it cannot be me (I think). Just name, phone # and e-mail, and either has a credit card onhand to verify the name for the self-help kiosk or a photo-ID for manual pickup. Basically, instead of hard passes they give to us, now we get credits online that we use to get the passes. We have to fill out a form for the amount and have to pick them up at the park, after showing ID. Basically they did this to keep people from selling passes, which was a big problem. It's a smart move! Just makes the process more annoying, especially for a big group like us.

1. Soppy (D)
2. Meeple
3. Nitori
4. Grefter
5. Joe Snow
6. Xer
7. Gate
8. Djinn (D)
9. Tal
10. Idun
11. VSM
12. Scar (D)

I'm going to be setting a cap on the trip at 20 people, for two reasons. That way I don't really have to worry about extra drivers, and I estimate I'll have 17 passes by the time of the con. I can get a few from my sister to get it to 19 (my employee ID gets me in which rounds it to 20) but I don't want to grab that many from her. As long as you're signed up for the con before April 2nd, signup for Universal will be open until I hit the cap. DO NOT just sign up just in case, only sign up if you're sure you're going. I will be very angry if people sign up to get in before the cap and end up dropping.

The park will open at 8, I believe. Summer months it might open earlier, but we'll see. So my aim is to leave the house at around 6:15 AM to get to there with enough time to park, get our passes and get in when it opens.

After that it's pretty much open game. Harry Potter is pretty awesome, but honestly unless you get there FIRST it's not worth going to immediately, as it overcrowds easily. Best time to usually hit it is after 3PM. The passes we get are two-park passes, so we can literally do almost everything before heading over there if people want to wait for a more pleasant experience. Three Broomsticks is also less crowded around that time if people want to eat.

I'm not a great judge of what people would want to do, and people can obviously split off into smaller groups to do other stuff, but my main aims are:

Islands of Adventure
Harry Potter (The area and the ride)
Duelling Dragons (Roller Coaster)
The Hulk (Roller Coaster)
Spiderman (Simulator ride)
Possibly Jurassic Park and Dudley Do-Right (Raft and Log Flume rides, respectively. Depends on if people care about getting wet).

Other Stuff of Interest: Dr. Doom's Free-Fall, Mythos (restaurant, awesome), Posideon's Fury (incredibly lame, but neat to look at), the Dr. Seuss area, Sinbad's Stunt Show.

Universal Studios
Rip Ride Rocket (Roller Coaster)
The Mummy (Indoor Roller Coaster, doesn't go upside down)
Disaster (Ride/show)
Men In Black (Ride/game. You shoot stuff and are scored on it. Would be awesome to have the DL go against each other)
The Simpsons (Simulator ride)
Despicable Me (Sim ride, should be open by then)

Other stuff of interest: Twister (pyrotechnics show),  E.T., The Beetlejuice show, the Blues Brothers show, Terminator 3-D, Shrek 4D, Horror Makeup Show, Animal Actors Show, possibly Fear Factor Live.

Tips:
For rides, the best thing I can say is that we should all do single rider for. It can sometimes cut up to 90% of the wait time off a long line, and with some rare exceptions (Men In Black) there isn't much that you really NEED to ride as a group. This would save a lot on time and allow us to better get everything people want to do in.

Think about how much you want to spend ahead of time, and on what. There are souvenirs associated with all the rides, and I get discounts on all of them. Plan on sticking around or at least let me know what you would want so time isn't wasted looking for you/me if people go off on their own. Same with food, I do not get discounts on outdoor snack carts, but handy rule of thumb is that if the register is outside, I don't get a discount, if the register is inside, I probably do. My discount also technically only is for up to 5 other people, but I know people in lots of places that'd have no problem covering everyone if we all eat at once (Three Broomsticks, Jurassic Park restaurants, Monster Cafe, my area, etc). Otherwise, covering smaller groups of people at a time isn't a problem. I get 25% off Food, and 35% off Merchandice. Lunch would cost ~$10-20 depending where you eat without the discount, snacks less so. Souvenirs are more or less what you're willing to pay for... there's cheap stuff and expensive stuff. T-Shirts are usually around $20, non-discount, as a baseline?

For the drivers, I have no problem if you want to drink at the park (it's not Disney, booze flows freely). We'll be there a long time and will also be walking around a lot. Just remember to cut yourselves off before we leave.

Be on relatively good behavior. I don't particularly think this should be a problem and don't care how wild people get, but if you get in serious trouble, they can tell who you got your passes from. People have been fired in the past from this. Again, I highly, highly doubt this'll be a problem, but I feel the need to put it out there >.>

Any questions or comments about the trip should be made in this topic!

Discussion / DL-Con 7: Gaming and Activities!
« on: February 15, 2012, 01:47:54 AM »
Hey guys, figured I'd get this started.

Gaming:

I have a PS3 and 2 controllers, so 2 more would be needed as well as an X-Box and/or Wii. I WILL have the Simpsons arcade game. I promise.

As far as board games, I have Betrayal at the House on the Hill, Gloom and Dreamblade. I may push for some Chardee Macdennis play as well (after viewing a handy instructional video of course). Just let everyone know what you're bringing here ahead of time as well! The dining room table is also a really good spot for this, and there's a table on the fenced-in porch that would also work.

For the laptop Touhou people, there's a decent computer desk with two ~20 inch screens for you guys.

Activities:

Wednesday: Universal Trip day. Again, DO NOT PLAN ON FLYING IN ON THIS DAY UNLESS YOU PLAN ON GETTING TO THE HOTEL YOURSELF.

Thursday: Chill time as people mingle and I run myself ragged to and from the airport. Probably order in pizza for dinner.

Friday:

Given that it's my house and I have a grill, I'm deeply committed to making the mythical DL Cookout happen for dinner that night. Would probably fall here, rain or shine. Gaming and general chill time would happen today as well as the Music Quiz most likely. Also a candidate for a trip to the comic store, which we have a really fucking awesome one here.

Saturday:

Traditionally given to Bowling. Dinner out at one of two places I have in mind is a possibility as well (Small-ish Rudy's type place and sports bar that serves alligator). The former might pose a problem for a large group, but is close to the only GameStop that still sells PS2 games around here. The latter is more generic outside said awesome and tasty appetizer, but much better for group and on the way home from bowling. Post thoughts.

Sunday: People go home.

Also, I plan on having a cocktail/alcohol night either Friday or Saturday night for people interested. Crashing at my place is welcome as long as you don't mind getting put wherever I can fit you. There will be some rules for this to keep things from getting out of hand, so keep that in mind.

Hotel eats: Just noting the places around the hotel to eat. There's a McDonald's, Arby's, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, a sports bar, a gelato place, a chinese food place and a Mexican restaurant in walking distance. There's a Firehouse Subs, a Taco Bell, a Wendy's and a diner on the highway just past my turnoff.

There's also a Publix near the hotel.

Discussion / DLCon 7: Florida
« on: September 21, 2011, 04:39:39 AM »
Hi! I'm Soppy. You may remember me from such DL-Cons as DLCon 1 and my guest apperance in DLCon 4! I'll be hosting the next DL-Con as well at my home in Orlando, Florida.

The Con dates are hardset at this point, and are June 7th-10th (6/7 to 6/10). This'll avoid the beginning of hurricane/storm season (which is usually quiet anyway) and open up the possibility for some big outing type activities. More on that later.

The house is much bigger than Hal's place, but not quite large enough to host everyone at the con. I can host the internationals and maybe some of the more cash-strapped people, but the rest will have to stay in a hotel. There are two about two and a half miles from the house, they are:

Holiday Inn Express, looks to be about $88 a night: http://www.hiexpress.com/hotels/us/en/apopka/mcogh/hoteldetail?cm_mmc=mdpr-_-YahooLocal-_-ex-_-mcogh

Hampton Inn & Suites, looks to be about $90 a night:
http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml;jsessionid=WCA1YKAYHM3TECSGBJNM22Q?ctyhocn=MCOAKHX

Residence Inn by Marriott, since Scar requested it:
http://www.residenceinnaltamontesprings.com/

I would recommend that unless you have a Marriott discount to go with either the Hampton or Holiday Inn listed above. They are the closest two to my house.

One of the BIG THINGS!(tm) I'd like to try to do this con is get everyone to Universal Studios. I've been sitting on a mound of free passes from work and would love to just blow through them all by taking everyone in a big outing. My idea for this one is to have it be the 6th (the day before the con) and black out that day for travel. Everyone who wants to come can get there Tuesday (or before), everyone who doesn't can come Thursday. If not enough people want to do it, or it causes problems in the planning, I can scrap this, but with this much advance notice I figure it's doable. It'll mean more work getting people to and from the airport on Thursday, but I'm willing to shoulder that burden for this. (Note: I can also keep costs down for people since I get 25% off food and 35% off souviners from my employee discount.)

Also, since it may be a once in a lifetime chance for some of the internationals, I can also arrange a Disney World trip for them. It'd be a bit pricey since I don't have free passes there, but I figured I'd float the idea. If not, we can always at least take a trip to Downtown Disney.

For those looking at tickets, the airport you'd be flying into would be Orlando International Airport (MCO).

As usual, post if you're gonna be able to come.

A reminder: Since the Universal trip seems to be a go, if you choose to arrive on the 6th (the day of the trip), you will be responsible for getting from the airport to the hotel.

Figured I'd post this now. Been wondering about putting together a DL fantasy league for years but never got off my ass. Would go under Yahoo scoring rules. I'm guessing a few people would be interested, but wondering if there's enough for a decent league. So here's hoping for 6+

Heavy / Renee Kearse (MK)
« on: January 13, 2011, 05:41:13 PM »
Renee Kearse is not your typical villain character. She isn't motivated to do harm to innocents or face down a rival in the hero's party. In fact, Renee isn't really motivated to do much at all. Her sole incentive for being an obstacle in Vayne's path was to please her respected mentor Isolde and to watch as Tony made a complete doofus of himself. She is truly a material girl living in an alchemical world. Well, the promise of cotton candy always helps too. Renee's MO in battle is simple: Summon her Azureflame Mana and rip apart enemies in tandem with it. Between the Mana's fiery strikes and Renee's own rather powerful swordsmanship, this is one not-so-airheaded blond to be watched.

13
Middle / Aigis (P3)
« on: January 12, 2011, 07:46:32 PM »
Don't be fooled by Aigis' beautiful face. This 'girl' is one part pretty and 9 parts killing machine built for a purpose: to destroy. Translates pretty well into a dueling arena setting, huh? With a body made out of steel, Aigis is pretty resilient to attacks, especially piercing attacks. Couple that with a metric ton of full healing through her Persona and Aigis can keep on going and going like the Energizer Bunny (if the energizer bunny were a decked out killing machine). Or for a quicker and bloodier end to a match, she can activate her Orgia mode and take advantage of the damage doubling it grants her to crush the opposition in record time. Aigis is a foe to be feared... as long as the opponent doesn't have lightning damage. She doesn't much like that.

14
Heavy / Reid (ToE)
« on: January 12, 2011, 07:42:10 PM »
Adventurous, optimistic, and possessing a heart that desires nothing more than to selflessly sacrifice himself for the greater good of mankind, these and many more do not describe Reid, the Rasheans hunter with a bottomless pit for a stomach. Instead, Reid Herschel is a cautious and somewhat realistic man who has a tendency to get outvoted by his more enthusiastic and idealistic comrades. So how did this kind of man become the saviour of the world? Well, having the world blow up is a little inconvenient for you and your loved ones, and it's not like anyone else can possess the Divine Aurora Arts. Not like it's all bad. Having a few extra techniques to add to his already brutal and extensive arsenal of sword skills is always a good thing, especially in a division as competitive as Heavy. Fast and durable to boot, his success in the arena belies his true ability. Still, he has nowhere to go but up, as there's no way in hell he's going down.

15
Light / Connie (S3)
« on: January 07, 2011, 02:43:26 PM »
Connie. Her name isn't that far removed from cute or cuddly, and with good reason. Being an adorable white dog with a neckscarf full of strawberries is adorable, especially after she's given a nice home at Budahuc Castle and four other canine friends to play with! Along with plenty of kind humans to pay attention to her, Connie is happy, but she isn't the world's best fighter. Even among the dogs she hangs around with. The occasional bribe of strawberries usually gets things done, but as for fighting power she's a bit... lacking. This isn't a bad thing, however - in Light, she can still use her various talents to win the day. It is only Light after all.

Heavy / Zalbard (ShF2)
« on: January 02, 2011, 05:22:43 AM »
Zalbard is certainly the weakest of the Greater Devils, though he does seem like a much more personable guy than the likes of Cameela and Gesph. He’s still a pain to fight though, with powerful, wide-ranged Bolt spells and solid physical attacks. He also has some decent HP to go along with it, though his durability can leave much to be desired. Still, Zalbard has enjoyed success in the DL that most of the cast of Shining Force 2 has not, winning a championship and upgrading to Heavy. While he might not destroy Heavy like he crushed Middle, he's can still be a devil in the arena. Possibly even a great one!

18
Light / Maria Balthasar (XG)
« on: January 02, 2011, 05:17:47 AM »
The confident heir of the Balthasar dynasty and quite possibly the perfect spokeswoman for Pert Plus For Kids!, Maria is naturally gifted with Gears. So much so that she can summon her Seibzhen from anywhere for a merciless beat down. Despite this uncanny and devastating ability, Maria is still a 13 year old girl, and most certainly takes hits like one. A fight with Maria is a race against time, and one she has thus far often lost. Still, with enough time, training, and tuning, there’s an excellent chance this girl will cause some damage.

19
Light / Jogurt (ShF1) (General)
« on: January 02, 2011, 04:24:44 AM »
HP: 1, MP: 1, Atk: 1, Def: 1, Agi: 1. Heart? Infinite. The little gerbil that could, that describes Jogurt to a tee. Nevermind the many humiliating losses haunting his record, nor the indescribable terror the little rodent must feel whenever he is up to fight again. Despite always knowing that he will never win, he still keeps coming back for more. Why? Hope. The dreams that the heroes of the DL have dared to dream. Perhaps not as grand a dream as some, but a win will be an uphill battle of Sisyphusian proportions. And it will make achieving it all the sweeter.

20
Middle / Garr (BoF3) (General)
« on: January 02, 2011, 04:15:29 AM »
Garr is an ancient man, the protector of an entire civilization. He is a Guardian who fought against the Brood in a war nearly 400 years ago, and he lives on to try to rid the world of the dragons. He had his bouts of wishy-washiness during his travels, but he came out alright in the end. Good thing too, as Garr is a skilled fighter, wielding a massive spear with ease. Bulky and built to last, he is also extremely hard to kill without magical ability. His experience in the Contest of Champions could prove useful for fighting in the DL Arena, but one would think that he would rely on more reliable skills than Gambit. Still, when you're tanking as much as he is, it's only a matter of time...

21
Heavy / Fei Fong Wong (XG) (General)
« on: January 02, 2011, 04:08:11 AM »
Fei is the Contact, which puts him in the running as the most powerful being in the Duelling League, possessing nearly infinite power due to his association with the Zohar. Of course, with all the Gods and Fei’s own reservations about fighting, he nevertheless manages to have a record decidedly in the red. Still, his uniquely potent Deathblows pack immense physical punch, allowing him to dispatch frailer foes in a single blow, and many others with continued punishing strikes. It's no Xenogears, but when the power of the universe is at your fists, who needs a towering giant robot?

Writeups / General Writeup Protocol
« on: October 15, 2010, 10:58:35 AM »
Hey. Just wanted to have some further discussion on how we'll organize things.

I was thinking of having a child board made for each division, that way inactive people can be filed away in there and moved back to the main folder when they are in for the season. That way it'll be a lot less cluttered for updates in general. Just having them be a child board with the title "Inactive Lights" or something would work.

When they're moved into active status, I'll give them the once over in case they need editing (some mention specific divisions, etc). Also in terms of editing, if other people want to do it or redo it (since not everyone can edit the post directly), we can just go by the general rule that the latest post is the writeup to be used?

Can anyone think of anything else?

24
Middle / Kurtis (Disgaea) (General Writeup)
« on: October 15, 2010, 10:48:25 AM »
Ever in the shadow of Gordon, Kurtis has pursued the Defender of Earth for many years, attempting to prove his worth and take Gordon's place as the true Defender of Earth. Kurtis was injured badly in an accident early in his life, which left him with a partially mechanical body - with more than a few tricks up its sleeve. Of course, this did become a moot point after his transformation into a Prinny. But it did give him the mighty Pringer Beam! Okay, so it's actually pretty average, but combined with a solid, but only slightly above average stat-line in all respects and some backup fire damage, it's more than enough to take on all comers in Middle.

25
Light / Nei (S3) (General Writeup)
« on: October 15, 2010, 10:40:19 AM »
For all the excitement and romanticism, the life of a wandering minstrel is a hard one. Even travelling in groups, should something happen to you, you can depend only on the charity of strangers. But then, that's what spurs you on to take care of yourself and those with you. So is it any surprise that Nei is perhaps one of the best support characters in the Duelling League? However, though the Jongleur Rune is a thing to fear, it does little good for Nei herself, who has to devote all her energy to using it and thus can't reap its benefits herself. Still, Nei's a competent fist fighter, fast and agile, and is skilled in weathering magical assaults. It's not much compared to Song of Madness maybe, but it's more than enough to excell in Light, and as Nei well knows, it's imporant to put on a good show no matter where you are.
