Season 15, Week 3
Yuna
(Final Fantasy X)

Once again, High Summoner Yuna faces a typical Godlike opponent: fast, strong, durable. And yet even the renowned Tir McDohl will fall prey to the same tactics that brought Yuna a championship last season. With a legion of Aeons made up of the souls of past heroes, Yuna has a literal army at her command, to say nothing of her potent arsenal of typical clerical magic. With such a significant advantage over her opponent, even the power of the Soul Eater will be overcome by the saviour of Spira.

Tir's match this week promises to be short and sweet. Short, because in this match between two quickdraw artists, the first turn is going to be the last. Sweet, because Tir's speed guarantees that the winning first turn will be his. The High Summoner may have a formidable legion of aeons at her disposal, but she's just a mundane enemy if she doesn't get the chance to summon them. Yuna can't do a thing to stop instant death, so for the first time since the DL's very first week, a maiden of Godlike will feel the touch of Tir McDohl's Deadly Fingertips.

And so it came to pass that Lady Yuna of Spira was crowned the Godlike champion. And as she rose to her new title, the people cheered for a time.

But there were those who feared that this would be the end of life as they knew it. They feared the power that the summoner had shown, and worried that there would be none able to stand against her. Thus, upon the day of Yuna's ascention to the title, one brave soul volunteered to scale the mountain of the Oracle, to seek the wisdom of the wise man.

Three times did the sun rise and set before the man found himself facing the Oracle. Relieved, the man related to the Oracle the concerns of the people. However, the Oracle did not respond. The man would beg and plead, but naught seemed to sway the heart of the keeper of knowledge. Finally, whether it was out of the kindness of his soul or the sheer desire for peace, the Oracle relented.

"Tell the people that Yuna shall remain champion until Judgement Day, and no later. That is all I shall say to you," spoke the Oracle, as he retreated to his home.

Three times did the sun rise and set before the man returned with the message the Oracle had bestowed upon him. And so the man revealed what he had been instructed to, and the people wept.

"Shall there be no salvation?" cried the people, and their despair grew.

The man who had seen the Oracle remained hopeful. Even as those around him forsook their faith, he remained loyal to his belief that someone would dethrone Lady Yuna.

Time passed, and Yuna proved able to defend her title with as much ease as she had earned it. The hopes of her foes dimmed.

The man remained hopeful.

And so Yuna stood calmly, waiting for her next opponent to appear, with very few onlookers. Many had given up on the chances of her failure, and did not see the point in attending.

The man was there. He looked deep into the eyes of Yuna, and saw the sadness therein. He saw the suffering that she felt at the hatred towards her. Yet he also saw the spark of defiance, the sign that she would not lose until she had truly been beaten.

The man entered the ring, raised his hand, and called upon his rune.

A fierce wind began to rage through the streets. All around, people huddled together in fear of the darkness that threatened to consume them.

Yuna smiled grimly, casting a spell she knew would be futile, as she fell to the darkness. Her day of Judgement was at hand.

And it was good.

Yuna: 9
Tir McDohl: 55

When Yuna checked her schedule for this week in the arena, she knew she wasn't in for another easy fight. The rune bearer's notorious speed and perfect-accuracy instant death were more than even the High Summoner could overcome, normally. Here there would be no simple aeon-wrought destruction; this match would require a little creativity.

When Yuna arrived at the arena, she saw at once her opponent standing in the middle of the ring wearing a multicolored bandana and a smirk. Tir McDohl was twirling his staff in one hand, patiently waiting for his opponent to step into the boundaries of the battle. Yuna smiled innocently and did so.

As she entered, Tir was not waiting for the speedy summoner to call one of her infamous aeons. By the time she cleared the boundary line, the Soul Eater was already glistening and reaching to extinguish Yuna's life. With Matthiu's help, McDohl had researched Yuna very thoroughly, and was thus extremely surprised to find that his Deadly Fingertips had no effect.

Yuna determined that it was her turn to smirk at the off-guard rebel. Twirling her dual pistols, Yuna's FFX-2 form, complete with death immunity, unleashed her Trigger Happy technique with a hail of gunfire that would make Virginia proud. A surprised Tir was riddled with no less than a dozen bullets and knocked to his knees by the sheer force of the assault as the gunner posed. "I suppose," the Godlike Champion added helpfully, "that you forgot about this form's storebought Safety Bit. You should realize that if I were a one-trick pony, like... some Godlike PCs, I wouldn't be winning championships." Yuna was slightly perturbed that her foe hadn't expired yet, but at the moment she couldn't recall any real reason to worry, seeing how badly she seemed to have thwarted his strategy.

But as the Gullwing prepared to end the match in her favor with a stylish Burst Shot, a very annoyed Tir McDohl sprang back to his feet and Yuna remembered, with more than a measure of horror, the True Rune of Life and Death's fourth spell: Judgement. Tir glared at her and raised his palm. Moments later, she collided with the arena's concrete wall and slid down to the floor in a crumpled, lifeless heap.

As a badly bloodied but victorious Tir left the ring, he marveled at how such a well-prepared gunner could forget about her own Target MP technique.

Yuna with all her Aeons...

Yuna with all her White Magic...

Yuna with all her above average Speed...

... just isn't fast enough to beat Tir.
