Prima Donna, First Lady of the Stage

One day, Edward, the spoony old bard of FF4, thought of making his own opera. He wrote the libretto, composed the music, found some willing actors, but one thing was missing - a female lead for the show. Several flyers quickly appeared on the bulletin board, stating that opera auditions would be held.

Tochter des Geistes: the new Opera featuring love, romance, action, and even some humor
OPERA SINGERS WANTED!
Specifications: Female, must be young, and must have some experience in the art of singing. Beauty is also a plus.

Time: Next Week
Place: The RPGDL Auditiorium
Director: Edward of Damcyan

The flyers were put up all over the place, and naturally, several groups of people saw it.

"Look, Ryudo, a competition involving singing!" said the young songstress of Granas as she noticed the flyer. "Think I could win and be an opera star?"
"Yeah, whatever, its not like those things aren't rigged anyway." responded the crude Geohound.
"You know, Ryudo, not all these competitions are 'rigged' as you say. Miss Elena, I say it would be a wise idea to go and show off your musical talent. After all, you are the number one songstress from our world," responded the the bird sitting on Ryudo's shoulder.
"Why, thanks for the support, Skye. I'll be sure to show up. If only everyone was as supportive to me as some people" Elena responded making a quick look at Ryudo
"Huh? What did I say? Go ahead and join up if you want, I'm just telling you you shouldn't get your hopes up..."

At a different corner of the DL stadium, looking at a different flyer...

"Hey, Lucia, look, its a singing contest!" said Hiro, proud as always. "With your knockout voice, I'm sure you have a shot."
"Really, Hiro? You think I should join? I'm not sure I am that good a singer..." responded the shy, blue-haired female standing next to him.
"Why not? All of those kids Nall looks after love your singing, I'm sure you'll knock the competition stone dead."
"Is that true Hiro? Or are you just saying that to make me feel better?"
"No way, Lucia, Hiro's being serious, at least I think he is. Besides, Nall and I both notice how much the children the miss you..." Ruby piped up.
"I see...well, I guess it would be okay if I joined this...who knows, it might be fun."
"That's the spirit, Lucia!" shouted Hiro.
"Don't get your hopes up, Hiro, Lucia's not the only one joining" responded a male voice behind Hiro.
"Dragonmaster Alex? What are you doing here?"
"Oh, I'm here to let you know that Lucia is going up against Luna, so she might not want to be competing with Althena" replied the Dragonmaster.
"Alex! Why are starting a fight with your successor?" said Luna, who was standing right behind Alex "Lucia, it would be great to challenge you in this friendly singing match."
"And don't worry, Luna, I'm sure you'll win. After all, lots of people consider you the greatest singer to ever grace Lunar."
"Is that a challenge, Alex!" Hiro shouted.
"You want a piece of me?"

The two engaged each other, attacking themselves in typical looney tunes fashion. Luna, Lucia, and Ruby all sighed deeply, Luna wished Lucia good luck, and the three girls all left the boys to deal with their problems themselves.

It was around this time that Shiho, most mocked Valkyrie Profile mage mages, heard about this competition. Why, a match I actually have a reasonable chance of winning,, she thought. I must join! For once, things seem hopeful! Nearly weeping with joy, she ran off to sign up.

And at a different part of the RGPDL Stadium...

"Hey! Celes! Guess what! I've got some great news for you!"
"What is it? You sound really eager..."
"Well, I just signed you up for the next bonus match."
"You... didn't even ask me my permission? Locke, I thought we agreed that you would always ask me first before making rash moves like that. What kind of match is it?"
"Oh, it's an audition for the new opera. Seeing as how great you performed Maria's role that one time, I thought you could knock the judges..."
"It's what?" Celes cried, turning red with fury.
"Uhh...did I say something?"
"Locke, you know how much I hated doing that. Even then, it was only for a noble cause!"
"... Oh..."
"Come on! I'm a former General! Not some..."
"Opera floozy, I know, I've heard that line before, I thought you were over it..."
Celes sighed. "Please tell me its not too late to back out..."
"Uhh...sorry, but its kind of a sealed deal, you know?"

Celes was furious, but somehow found it in her strength to calm herself down "Well, I guess there's nothing better to do than just to get this contest over with..."

With that and some regret, Celes decided to go off and start training, trying to make the best of it.

And at the last flyer...

"Wow, Garnet, look! An audition for an opera. Didn't you always say you studied drama and wanted to be part of one? And with your great voice, I'm sure you'll be picked" Zidane said upon seeing the flyer.
"Zidane, you know that was just me before we actually went on that adventure. I've changed a great deal from then. I'm not sure I still have what it takes to be a great opera singer anymore," replied the Queen.
"Oh, come on Dagger, all you have to do is sing your song, our song, and you'll be sure to win. I mean, who doesn't like that song?"
"I'm still not sure..."
"Come on, please? I'll even help you out!"
"I guess I could give it a shot...though, to be honest, I never expected this old dream of mine to come true, ever,"
"That's great! I'm looking foward to seeing you announced as the next opera star!"

With that, all the competitors were chosen. So who will be the lucky lady chosen by Edward?

  • Elena's song pleases Edward greatly
  • Lucia's song calms Edward's soul
  • Luna's infamous singing battle VA puts her above the rest
  • Shiho shows that weak VP Mages can still be great Stars
  • Celes makes Edward shout \"Oh my Heroine\"
  • Garnet shows Edward the real Melodies of Life
  • Edward falls in love with all six voices, and hires them all
  • Edward hates all of them, burns his work, and falls into depression

Ruinchaser
All right now, let's do this alphabetically. You're all here to audition for the role of the Sorceress Talia? Excellent. Celes Chere, you're up first.

"Oh my hero..."

THANK YOU! My dear, I'm sorry, but you cannot sing worth a damn. That tinny MIDI quality, that lack of expression in your words, it's terrible. Sure, it might've been breathtaking back in the 90's on the SNES, but this is an opera, not some trashy bait job. NEXT!

Next is... Elena.

"Thank you. For my audition piece, I will be singing a hymn to Lord Granas."

Go on.

*thirty seconds in*

THANK YOU! I'm sorry dear, but your voice is much too fragile for an opera. It might be fine for some silly church where the choir drowns you out, but this is a major event. NEXT!

Garnet Til Alexandros XVII, you're up.

...wait a minute... how old are you?

"Huh?"

I'm sorry, but we can't have a minor auditioning for the lead. It just makes no sense, but you'd be perfect for the role of the Emperor's daughter.

"Well, alright."

PERFECT! NEXT!

Hmmm... Miss... Lucia?

"Correct. May I begin."

Go ahead. Can't ruin this day further.

"When I was alone as one, my heart..."

THANK YOU! For the love of God, learn to lower your voice an octave or three. Right now, you're so sugary and high pitched that either you do that, or drop seventy pounds, and move into a casino. NEXT!

Hmmm... Luna of Burg, you're up.

"Wishing on a dream that seems far off
Hoping that it will come today.

Into the starlit night,
Foolish dreamers turn their gaze,
Waiting on a shooting star.

But, what if that star is not to come?
Will their dreams fade to nothing?
When the horizon darkens most,
We all need to believe in hope.
Is an angel watching closely over me?
Can there be a guiding light I've yet to see?
I know my heart should guide me, but
There's a hole within my soul.
What will fill this emptiness inside of me?
Am I to be satisfied without knowing?

I wish, then, for a chance to see,
Now all I need,

Desperately,

Is my star to come..."

WONDERFUL! ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! You've got the job.

...well, that's what I would be saying if I hadn't recieved THESE! These pictures! Young lady, this is a serious opera, and we can't have somebody who appears to perform in bondage on the side. NEXT!

You're Shiho, aren't you?

"Yes sir."

I'm sorry to inform you of this, but I've heard your past work. And, frankly, I'd hire Lezard before you. NEXT!

"Uh, sir, you've run out of applicants..."

Damn it to hell, Kain, isn't there anyone who can-

"Am I late?"

And you are?

"Auditioning for the part."

...can you sing?

"Of course I can!"

...I'm waiting.

"Of course you are. I'm going to sing my most renowned song, in the original Japanese."

Two languages. Not bad. I'm listening.

"Kamiyori Tsuyori
Akuma wa Kerai
Dare yori mo Bijin
Megami yori mo
Osoroshii Osoroshii
Jibun-no Miryoku
Atashi wa Sekai de
Ichiban-"

INCREDIBLE! I'm sorry for interrupting you, but you are the absolute best singer that's come here all day! No, all week! I can't believe it! You're hired!

"Of course I am."

* * * * * * * * Celes: Of all the nerve. I can't believe we have to stand in line with these losers.

Luna: Well, we do want to see it.

Elena: Like it or not, none of us are going to pass up a chance to see an opera.

Lucia: I'm happy for Garnet. She at least got a role.

Shiho: Could someone read out the program to me? Who's playing what?

Celes: "Tochter des Geistes

Celes: Tal-Tal-Tal-Talia is played... by...

Lucia: Oh, give me that! Sorceress Talia is played by...

Elena: What's wrong, Lucia?

Luna: WHAT?! They said YOUNG! How can you consider HER young?!

Shiho: Um, who's not young?

Celes: *between gritted teeth* The lead went to her royal highness, she who did not show up on time, Marjoly.

Edward: That's right ladies! I chose someone who actually has a repertoire! Sorry to sneak up behind you, but you're right in front of the entrance to the box seats. Ta-ta.

Shiho: Wow. This might be a good show after all. I heard Marjoly's fantastic.

Celes, Elena, Lucia, Luna: SHUT UP!

Lucia: 1
Luna: 1
Shiho: 3
Celes: 2

Edward follow a rather simple principal when making this decision. "Girls are like Voltron, the more you connect together the better it is"
