Season 52, Week 1
Magus (Janus Zeal)
(Chrono Trigger)

Hmph. So this overgrown kitten too ugly for anyone to love thinks to challenge the great Janus, Prince of Zeal? The magical prodigy has faced stiffer feline challenges from an angry Alfador. Mewtwo relies on elemental and physical attacks, and both fail miserably against Magus' vaunted barrier. What's that? Mewtwo's defensive game will make him tough to kill? Well... psychic pokemon are said to fear the power of darkness, and no matter how high Mewtwo makes his defences, Geyser's HP-leech effect will rapidly consume Mewtwo's merely above average HP. Recover? Ha! Suggesting mere healing could overcome Magus is as laughable as suggesting the great wizard might lose a battle to someone as pathetic as Marle, Robo, or that annoying toad. Many may say that it is Magus' fate to be defeated this week, but to them, Magus will only laugh.

The mighty engineered psychic feline has suffered a long string of humiliating, inevitable losses in the arena, which certainly hasn't done any good to his name as a dueler. However, Mewtwo is about to reverse this bout of terrible luck: the sorcerer Magus, while quite capable as an opponent and with a competent record himself, is terribly matched up to the psychic kitty. His elemental barrier gimmick is useless against the effectively non-elemental Psychic, and his offense is both very poor and mostly magical, which Mewtwo mocks relentlessly with his daunting magic resilience and Amnesia buff. And, if Magus even gets to scratch the surface of Mewtwo's skin, Recover will keep him healthy for as long as it takes. Not that it'll take long: after a few castings of Amnesia, a couple Psychics should be more than enough to fell the child of Zeal.

Psychic attacks were flying. Dark Bombs were a countering. Healing, Geysers, Dark Matters, Amnesias, Scythe Swings, Swift attacks...you name it! The two were breaking out all the stops! But in the end, the prince of Zeal dropped to one knee, while genetically enhanced feline was still standing.

Magus staggered back up to his feet, but didn't assume his defending position.

"So it seems you are as strong as they say. I can see why many deem you the 'ultimate Pokemon.' In that case, I concede defeat." Magus said, nodding his head in respect to Mewtwo.

I applaud you for hold you for holding up as long as you did. You fought honorably, and should be not feel disgraced.

"Indeed. I am willing to admit I was bested by the better the man...cat...thing...whatever you are. All I can say is thank you for a good fight." Magus said as he left the arena in defeat.

"Doesn't that just beat all..." Rei said, as we watched the fight from the Judge's box.

"What do you mean?" said Rufus, sitting next to him.

"We actually got through an entire Godlike Match...from start to finish...and there wasn't a single hitch attached. I mean, they both went in, fought, and one came out ahead on pure duelling merits. None of this outside influence, no creamonade cannons, no bizarre revenge fiascos from the most unlikely sources, no dimensional rifts from nowhere causing freakish penguins in winter coats and pink marshmallows to attack. Just...a straight up fight...with a very normal ending."

"And?"

"I didn't think we were still capable of such a thing, is all..." Rei said sighing
