Season 51, Week 2
Bernadette Egan
(Suikoden 5)

Sigh. Still more fighting? Well, for Bernadette that's probably an improvement over being goaded into endless mindgames with her devious father, although she suspects the master magician Lorenta won't be much less obnoxious with words than Skald is. But that's why she has a Flowing Rune handy: with a casting of Silent Lake, Bernadette won't have to hear a word Lorenta has to say! Even further, she will seal the teacher's magic herself, which should make this fight a cinch, given Lorenta has absolutely no offense without her tricksy little spells. Not that Bern needs this advantage, all things considered - she does have bountiful healing, after all - but a practical person takes practical means to make ends meet. And silencing the opposition is certainly faster than engaging in a boring as all get out slugfest. Quite frankly, she'd rather listen to Skald than deal with that fate.

Lorenta, treasured schoolmarm of Flenceburg Academy, has arrived to teach yet another student a lesson in magic. And she won't even need her trusty Mystic Cross to do it! Exam question: What is the natural enemy of all seamen? Why, seagulls, of course, the scourges of sailors everywhere. What? The Island Nationer claims to not be terrified of them? Well, she will be after this match is over. See, while Bernadette might be passable at healing, she's utterly inept at damage. And if she dares invoke Silent Lake, cutting off her access to Breath of Ice, Bernadette is even more hopeless and forced to rely on her toy throwing knives Lorenta, meanwhile, trumps Bernadette's finite healing with her reliably infinite Heal spell. All she has to do is sit back smugly, healing away Bern's pathetic attempts at damage, and let her avian familiar slowly devour Bernadette whole! Hah-hah!

Silent Lake.

It's that simple.

"...that's not like her." Lucian noted, as Lorenta, furious, stalked out of the arena, before a confused Bernadette could do more than silence her.

"Well, yeah, the old hag never did like being shut up, even for a moment." Mystina shrugged.

Lenneth, pondering a certain monologue, simply nodded solemnly.
