Season 44, Week 4
Jean
(Breath of Fire II)

It's a question that has stumped people for years: who is stronger, a pirate or a frog? Well, children, ponder no longer, for this arena will provide you with an answer as the Frog Prince Jean and the stout pirate Fargo fight it out in the Light semifinals! And, of course, children, we all know who is destined to win - the frog! The frog prince Jean has nothing to fear against Fargo, sporting the very accurate Death spell against a pirate without any sort of instant death immunity! Things couldn't be any more one-sided than that. It's almost a pity the stakes can't be more exciting, but hey, answering a question for the ages is important, too!

Well, Rinoa and Rafa didn't pose much of a challenge to the daring pirate captain, but it looks like Fargo's current competition has stepped it up about five notches for this next match. Jean may be an exceedingly polite and genteel fellow, but Fargo knows that any man who makes his living on the water is going to be one tough customer regardless of appearances. Still, Fargo himself is as tough as they come, and this old sea dog has a few tricks up his sleeve to deal with the frog prince. Well, okay, maybe just one trick. But hitting hard and pulling out the mighty Invincible for a killing stroke is one hell of a trick, wouldn't you agree?

Pirates are fearsome fighters, widely respected in the league. They can battle on land or ship, and Fargo is no different. He certainly is a faster hand with his blade than Jean and can outmuscle him if he can just avoid his Death spell..

Or letting Jean get the drop on him.

When the polite Frog prince suggested fighting on Fargo's ship instead of the arena, Fargo leaped to agree. What better than homefield advantage to negate whatever chance Jean has of victory? Forgetting that while pirates are masters of the sea on a ship, Frogs are masters of water, period. Sinking Fargo's ship was easy as poking a few holes in the hull.

It's hard to duel when you can't move or swim much thanks to a sword and armor weighing you down. Fargo was defenseless when Jean closed in and shredded him with a series of quick jabs from his Holy Rapier.

Jean: 44
Fargo: 15

As the holder of an accurate instant death in Light, Jean was naturally getting some criticism for relying on a single Death spell to win fights. Crafty as he is, Jean went to the judges to see if he could use a different kind of Death in his next fight.

Of course, after the Persona 3 Grim Reaper lay waste to Fargo in no time, Jean was banned from ever talking with the judges beforehand again, and Justin, Dekar, and Bartre still don't where they made a mistake.

Jean considers the whole thing worth it, of course.
