Season 29, Week 3
Reed
(Suikoden III)

Sure, spending your life following a bratty noblewoman who acts like a pre-teen prima donna isn’t exactly an ideal destiny for an able-bodied swordsman like Reed, but that’s the way the story goes sometimes. But after his last match in the DL, he can finally add a win in the arena to his accomplishments. Sure, it was against a less-than-reputable Valkyrie Profile mages, but this week, he faces...another Valkyrie Profile mage! And a frail mid-boss at that! While Lezard might be a cackling super-genius, his duelling abilities are less than stellar. A couple - heck, maybe even one - sword slashes will put the necromancer in his grave without much effort.

Ahh, the sweet fruits of victory. And with every triumph, Lezard moves a step closer to the only real prize, the fair Valkyrie. But what's this? It seems the opposition is getting worse. A lesser man might sympathise with this Reed and his unfortunate baggage, but a true sorceror has no time for such mundane concerns. No, the poor fencer will fall even faster than the famed Schroedinger's Cat - he lacks even the most elementary defenses against Lezard's powerful magics, and Lezard isn't about to give him a break with Wait Reaction. Yes, it is as though the Fates themselves smile on Lezard's quest...not that he needed their help anyway.

Reed is a brave fighter.

...Wait, he's not, is he?

Well, at least he's not that easy to push around, right?

No?

How about intelligent? Or powerful enough to overcome, or possibly overcompensate for, these flaws?

He's not?

Hmmm. Is he charming and debonair? Does he have good connections?

Nope.

Is his opponent someone that is known to be able to literally survive the end of the world, who is charming in a vaguely creepy way, with good connections in a weird way, intelligent, hard to push around, not a wuss, and...is...well, at least capable of hurting Reed pretty badly in a fight?

Yep.

Lilly was seen before the match, trying vainly to drag a self-sedated Reed out of bed, with little luck.

Welll, at least he knows one thing well. His mistress. (No, not like that.) He knocked himself out rather than have to deal with an angry Lilly.

Lezard simply smiled. Getting to Godlike the hard way wasn't something he expected to work, with all those fools biased against him, but things seemed to be looking up.
