Last Chances

~Oblivion Knight

"This is intolerable! I, with so much history, have been deemed unworthy? So I ate a couple useless generics... big deal! This insolence will not be tolerated!"

Necron, now a fallen Godlike, was moaning and groaning on the day of hysteria that followed his booting. He wasn't the only one, of course: Elliot, Chaos, and Balbazak had joined him in the walk out of the DL ramparts to the world outside.

"I'm memorable enough!" Elliot yelled. "I stood still and got killed by arrows!"

"Yeah!" Balbazak chimed in. "I did too!"

"And I committed suicide by charging headfirst into the fray!" Chaos yelled.

This continued throughout the walk out of the DL proper into the dark forests beyond. The trek continued for a few more minutes before Chaos stopped dead in his tracks.

"Moron!" Necron yelled, having walked into him. "What was that for?!"

"Look, there's someone else here," the cyborg cautioned.

The group looked down at their feet, where both Baralai and Shuyin, thought missing, were lying on the ground. Not knowing what to do, the misfit booted warriors started kicking the two bodies, waiting for something to happen.

Baralai was quickly up. "Damnit, what is this? Why were you kicking me?"

"We thought you were lost in some time warp... thing," Elliot said. "What happened?"

"This idiot!" At that, Baralai kicked Shuyin in the head, causing the Tidus cosplayer to grab his head, demonstrating that he had finally woken up. "This idiot decided it'd be fun to 'try our luck elsewhere' by opening up some stupid gate to another world. Of course, I walked in on him trying to jump through it, tried to stop him, and got pulled in with him. Jerk."

"But, um, again: where were you?"

Baralai groaned. "In paradise. Shuyin made a mistake, and we were teleported to a planet inhabited entirely by Yuna cosplayers. It was perfect."

Suppressing a shudder, Necron asked, "If for whatever reason you found that tolerable, why didn't you stay?"

"Moron over here apparently got scared of them or something. So he drags me through yet another portal, and here we are."

"But..." Shuyin started to say.

"Shut up!" Baralai yelled. "Now we're not only out of the DL, but also out of paradise! Don't talk to me!"

"But..but..." Shuyin stuttered.

"Why don't you walk with us?"

"...Ok..."

And so the new merry band continued going onward, deeper into the forest. Not long into this new adventure, Shuyin, the little fearful rat he was, jumped up and into Elliot's arms, screaming like a little girl and prompting the general to drop the Tidus look-alike onto the ground. The party turned to where Shuyin had been looking, and saw what appeared to be an extremely large snake coiled around a tree.

"Necron," Baralai said calmly. "Some light?"

Necron immediately summoned up a flare, lighting up the area around the group. Shuyin ran around in circles, screaming "We're going to die!" repeatedly. The rest of the crew looked calmly around at the mass of faces around them. Well, except Baralai, who tripped Shuyin, causing him to fall face-first onto the ground. Man has his priorities.

The creature previously thought to be a snake was actually the tail of a grotesque green demon. Behind him was a large dragon, eyes closed, clearly in some type of deep thought. Surrounding the group was a motley assortment of humans, all dressed in various clothing, all bearing different weaponry. The odd assortment of characters appeared to be waiting for something.

From the crowd of humans, one man stood out. Dressed in a slick business suit and wearing dark sunglasses (at night), he stepped out from the pack and addressed the new arrivals:

"Welcome, my friends. I am Guido Kandori, and we all have something in common. Look around. These are the faces of those who have been wrongly booted from the RPGDL. Orgodemir, Rem, Bloodbane, nearly the whole Phantasy Star 3 cast, and many others. You are new but bearing similar weights. Tell me. Would you like to find true solace by exacting vengeance upon those false judges who did this to you?"

The pack fell silent for a few minutes. Eventually, it was Elliot who spoke up first: "Yes, I do. You have my sword."

"Well," Orgodemir snorted, "That was easier than expected. Though... where is the rest of the Persona 2 cast? I thought we took care of that. Once that false evidence about Baofu got planted, they were supposed to follow the rest of these misfits here to our little party."

"They were," Baralai said. "But apparently, they didn't want to come with us. Something about finding the truth, you know how they are."

"Wait!" Shuyin yelled. "You planted false evidence?"

"Yesssss," the large dragon in the back, Bloodbane, hissed.

"You see," Guido started in, "we needed help. Though the loss of those five will be a weight to bear, I think we can manage anyway. Judge Orlandu, Mewtwo, Edge, Rolf... these people have the power. I think you know what I'm getting at."

"Yes," Necron agreed. "Destroy them, usurp control. They have their own special facility, far from the DL proper, set up for disciplinary actions only. We are to attack it, I assume, and destroy them all?"

"Precisely," Orgodemir confirmed, laughing.

Kandori called attention back to himself and began to speak. "If you're all in, this is the plan...."

The next day, RPGDL High Inquisitorial Center, Undisclosed Location

"Good morning, Mr. Landale. What would you like for breakfast this morning?"

"Nothing at the moment. I'm off to run first."

The sun was shining very brightly this morning, Rolf noticed. It'd be a quiet day, he said to himself. Wake up, exercise, eat, go see Nei for a while. After all, he had saved up enough vacation days to take a good week off, so damned if he wasn't going to enjoy it.

"Hey Rolf!" Edge yelled as he passed the agent by. "How is everything? Ready to take off?"

"Sure, in a minute."

"Well, hurry up, or that old fart is going blame me for being late again. Where are you headed, by the way?"

"Roof. I need to breathe and mentally prepare myself before any physical exer-"

"All right already," Edge interrupted. "Whatever. Just hurry." The ninja dashed off down the corridor as Rolf walked upstairs to the roof of the building.

Rolf went over to his usual meditation spot and crouched down. Control the anger, he said to himself. Control it. He had done this for several years, and it was still one of his favorite activities: finding one's inner peace, alone.

But something was off. He opened one eye, and looked around. No birds, no bees, no mosquitos... in the middle of summer? Something was not right. Rolf stood up and just barely saw the arrow coming in time to parry it with his sword. Speedily turning to the source, he saw a young girl with a bow knocking another arrow and aiming towards him.

He immediately recognized her, of course: Gwen, one of the booted Phantasy Star 3 characters. But she wasn't alone. Her entire cast, and, indeed, every booted character from the DL was approaching the house, weapons ready, torches burning. It was like an angry mob, except with the firepower of several militaries.

Edge was up the stairs in a second. "Rolf! You see that? We've got a situation. I called for help, but I don't think this looks good at all. It's us, Mewtwo, Orlandu, Fuse, and that's about it. We're in for a rough fight."

"Yeah, looks like we are."

Hearing footsteps, Edge spun around, Fumas at the ready, to see a surprising sight: Ulala, Katsuya, Tatsuya and Baofu, recently booted from the DL, were standing at the stairwell. "We're here to help," Katsuya said.

"Suou and I were part of this squad, and we still are, despite what might have happened," Baofu said, lighting up a cigarette. "Also, I have a funny feeling this was all planned out. I'm in for the ride."

"And I've brought Aya with me. Said she suspected something from the beginning. That should even the odds a bit," Katsuya remarked.

"Well," Rolf said, "Good to have you aboard. Now, let's see if we can hold out until help arrives..."

In this assault upon justice, which force will stand triumphant?

  • The vengeful mob of the booted overcomes the defenses before help arrives
  • The brave warriors of the blind maiden of justice repel the attack

Orlandu blanched slightly at the task facing him. An entire ocean of fighters ringed Bloodbane and Orgodemir, with Guido Kandori and Rem standing in the middle. All of them were laughing, practically giddy at the chance for bloody revenge. The fighters were a mix of fear and rage, and unable to do anything but prepare for the worst.

Then Rolf started glowing. "I.. will..not... ALLOW THIS!" After a few quick words and gestures from Aya, Rolf charged into the middle of the pack.

---

Guido just stood and grinned. "Looks like Rolf seeks to have a hero's funeral. Let's give it to him. Sean, Crys, cut him down!" The Phantasy Star 3 warriors met Rolf's charge with outstretched swords. Stricken, Rolf fell to the ground, clearly dying from the attack.

Then the world exploded.

---

Orlandu surveyed the damage. Rolf's suicidal Megid attack had leveled most of Guido's army. Only Bloodbane, Rem, Orgodemir, and Guido still stood, all soaked in blood. Though hurt, Guido stood unbent. "KILL THEM ALL!" Guido and the Dragons rant to the ramparts, murder clearly in mind.

Then the world exploded again, right behind where Rem was floating.

---

"Again?!" Guido looked around. Rem was completely gone. Orgodemier was staggering from side to side, and Bloodbane was barely able to stand upright. Everyone was was wiped out by the second attack. Bloodbane attempted to say something, but only gurgled, as a shining blade lay embedded in his throat. From behind Bloodbane walked out a very beaten Rolf, covered in wounds from head to toe. Aya's Parasite Energy was wearing off, but it had given the agent the second wind he so badly needed.

Rolf's smile was covered in blood, and looked not the least bit friendly. "Looks like you were once again outmatched by the judges, Kandori. Your time is up."

Guido turned around quickly, and saw Orlandu, Baofu, and Mewtwo tearing through what was left of Orgodemir. Fuse, Aya, Edge, and Katsuya approched him, weapons bared and looking ready to fight.

Dropping his battered glasses, Guido sighed and got ready for combat. He was going down, but not without a fight.

---

"That should cover the last of it." Aya's hands glowed with energy, and the worst of Rolf's wounds closed. Orlandu stood nearby Rolf, supporting him. The criminals, or the remains of them, were being gathered by Fuse and company. Guido was the only one taken alive, and even he was near death after the beating that he took. Edge and Katsuya stood guard over him, weapons at hand.

Rolf looked over the carnage of the battlefield, and shook his head. "All this bloodshed.. what was gained?"

Guido looked up at this comment, and spat on the ground. "Pride. No matter what else you can say about me, I didn't go down without a fight."

Poor Edge. For once, his skill means very little in the face of Necron at full power AND the PC killing monstrosity that is Orgodemir.

At least Rydia brought him back to health after that......
